A riveting tale of an extraordinary Indian By M.R. Narayan Swamy

September 11, 2018 by Nasheman

It will be an understatement to say this is a gripping book, sympathetic yet critical. With his passion for meticulous research, Philip Goldberg has authored what is undoubtedly one of the most stirring and brilliant accounts of a spiritual master, Paramhansa Yogananda, delving in particular into his life in the US that have largely remained shrouded in mystery. The result is this profound biography.

Goldberg makes it clear that he is not a disciple of Yogananda, which makes the book all the more enriching. Yogananda (born Mukund Lal Ghosh in Gorakhpur) achieved global fame with his 1946 masterpiece “Autobiography of a Yogi”. That seminal book is the reason why he still casts a spell, although he passed away decades ago. A professional writer for more than 40 years, Goldberg decided to essay Yogananda’s life because although the yoga guru spent almost all his adult years in America, less than 10 per cent of the “Autobiography…” is about that immensely productive and historically significant period.

Goldberg’s wide-ranging research led him to conclude that Yogananda, his quirks and idiosyncrasies notwithstanding, was an extraordinary human being, a spiritual prodigy, psychically gifted with exceptional inner powers and without doubt a self-realised yogic master. From a young age, he stalked God the way “Sherlock Holmes stalked criminals”.

But for one who moved to the US in 1920 unsure of his English, life wasn’t easy.

With his ochre robes and long hair, his mere appearance could invite ridicule, torment and even abuse. He endured sneers, glares, name-calling and even stone-throwing, but maintained his dignity. Worse, there were times when Yogananda and his close group didn’t have enough to buy food, so they would simply fast for a few days, says Goldberg, uncovering details never known before. Building the network he eventually did in the US was no joke because it was a time of coin-operated phone booths, long-distance operators, telegrams and letter writing. But Yogananda did it.

Only a handful of people came to his earlier “satsangs”. The numbers grew slowly, through word of mouth, as Yogananda began wandering across the length and breadth of America — much like Adi Shankara did in India centuries earlier. He went everywhere he could: Miami, Seattle, Oregon, Los Angeles, New York, Cleveland, Colorado, Boston, Utah.

Yogananda’s very name played a role in popularising yoga, then an unknown subject in the West. As he toured America, every time his name was mentioned or appeared in print, “yoga” became further legitimised in public mind. For someone who was reticent about public speaking at first, he became quite a performer. No wonder, his gatherings — where he spoke about God, yoga, meditation, the oneness of humankind — began to attract as many as 5,000 to 6,000 people. There were occasions when visitors had to be turned away because the venues were overflowing. A time came when The Los Angeles Times would call him “the 20th century’s first superstar guru”.

How did Yogananda succeed? Although his ingredients always contained elements from Hinduism, including karma, dharma, reincarnation, mantras, chakras and core principles of Vedanta, the combination of scientific rationality and respect for the Judeo-Christian tradition would become hallmarks of Yogananda’s teaching. Yogananda, says Goldberg, took the veneration of Christ a step further, producing a massive volume of written and spoken commentary on Jesus and his teachings. This triggered problems too. He was accused of selling out to attract Christian followers and also of “Chritistianising” Hinduism. His introduction of kirtan to America has been largely under-appreciated, the author says.

Once Yogananda attained VIP status, he was welcomed to the White House by President Calvin Coolidge (1923-29). Indeed, he had genuine love for America. He said the US was the most spiritual country, next only to his own India. He also met Mexican President Emilio Candido Portes Gil. What is noteworthy is that Yogananda makes no mention of these personal achievements in his “Autobiography…”, which is more about saints he met in his quest for God and less about himself.

But a time came when Yogananda had to face the worst of America: Media sensationalism, religious bigotry, ethnic stereotyping, sexual allegations and brazen racism. Life became difficult during the World War years as it affected revenue from class fees, books and magazine sales. Donations plunged. Worse, people he though were his soul mates suddenly ditched him and took him to court, causing him immense pain. On one occasion, he begged the Divine Mother: “Free me. Let me go back to India to serve you there.” It was not to happen.

Yogananda kept saying that he was using business in religion and not making a business of religion — as evidenced by the fact that no one was profiting financially from his work. When he returned to the US after a brief visit to India in the 1930s, he was detained for four days by US authorities for some obscure technical reason. But nothing derailed the “serious man with a serious and singular mission, a determined, disciplined, demanding dynamo who slept only three or four hours a night”. But Yogananda was fun-loving too. He loved popular comic strips like “Blondie” and “Bringing Up Father”. He loved to fly kites. And as a cook, he was a perfectionist.

Goldberg is clear that allegations of sexual derailment hurled at him have no basis. “Had I found verifiable evidence that Yogananda had sexual affairs or exploited female disciples, I would not have hesitated to report it. But I did not… My research did not uncover any credible evidence that Yogananda ever broke his vow of celibacy… No woman ever claimed to have had sexual relations with Yogananda — not even in posthumous letters, diaries or memoirs.”

In 1946, Yogananda took advantage of a change in immigration laws and applied for citizenship. His application was approved in 1949 and he became a naturalised US citizen. It was the year he took a train to San Francisco to meet Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. And when he died, Yogananda was speaking about India.

According to Goldberg, Yogananda’s crowning achievement, and the most enduring monument to his earthly expedition, was the “Autobiography of a Yogi”. It has sold millions of copies and continues to be a best-seller. But in 1946, publisher after publisher rejected it — until the Philosophical Library went for it. That book, along with Yogananda’s other writings, has had a religious and spiritual impact that “is unique and unassailable”. As Goldberg says, no single person contributed more to East-West current than Yoganand

Modi government pursuing anti-people policies: Opposition leaders

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Opposition leaders on Monday accused the Modi government of pursuing “anti-people policies” and cheating the people on various issues, besides remaining silent on the rising prices of fuel and other essential items.

Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar accused the NDA regime of betraying the people through fuel price hikes and said that a beginning had been made to oust the “anti-people” Modi government in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Addressing a joint opposition protest rally at the Ramlila Maidan here against petrol and diesel price hikes, Pawar said that power had gone into the wrong hands, and parties opposed to the government have to work together to remove it.

“We have to bring about a change. If a change has to be brought, all political parties who work to protect the interests of people have to make joint efforts to remove this anti-people government. If we are ready to proceed on this path, we will get the support of people… power has gone into wrong hands and we will rid the country of it,” the former Union Minister said.

He said that a beginning has been made with Monday’s protest called by the Congress and supported by nearly 20 political parties.

Without naming the BJP, Pawar said that people running the government for the past four years had assured that prices of commodities of daily use will be kept under check but steps that should have been taken were not taken.

Pawar took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his speech at the BJP National Executive meet on Sunday. “He talked of his government’s bravery, but this bravery is in pulling down the rupee, this bravery is in raising fuel prices, this bravery is in raising cooking gas prices.”

The former Union Minister also countered the BJP charge that nothing happened in the last many decades, and said such allegations were quite strange.

“Then Leader of the Opposition Atal Bihari Vajpayee told Parliament that such remarks were an insult to farmers who had made India self-dependent in food grains, an insult to labourers who worked to increase industrial production and export…”

He also took a dig at the BJP vis-a-vis commemorating Vajpayee, saying the BJP veteran was not remembered when he was alive. Instead of taking his name now daily, BJP leaders should follow his message if they wanted to pay him real tributes.

In his remarks, Trinamool Congress leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy accused the Modi government of “cheating people on every issue.”

Revolutionary Socialist Party Member of Parliament N.K. Premachandran said that protests by various political outfits was an indication that the entire country is agitated and protesting against the government’s “anti-people policies”.

Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Jayant Chaudhary said the BJP leaders were silent on issues affecting the people, including fuel prices and unemployment.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Hemant Soren said that the government had “looted” about Rs 10 lakh crore from the poor, farmers, labourers and the middle class through increased prices of petroleum products.

“The Prime Minister calls himself a fakir (acetic). I am surprised. We have seen plunderers loot the country, but it is for the first time that a ‘fakir’ is looting the country,” he said.

Strike remains mostly ineffective in West Bengal

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

The nationwide six-hour strike called by the Congress and the Left Front sponsored 12-hour general strike in West Bengal evoked a lukewarm response on Monday as people came out in numbers on the streets while public transport was available in the city and suburbs amid tight security arrangements.

The Congress and its allies called the strike from 9 a.m. against the rising prices of petrol and diesel along with the depreciating rupee, the CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist)-led Left Front too called the strike starting from 6 a.m. on the same issue.

However, it was business as usual in the city and suburbs where thousands of office goers hit the streets as the day progressed. The districts also remained largely active barring stray incidents in some places like Howrah district’s Dasnagar industrial area where the strike supporters tried to put up road blockades and clashed with the police.

Banks, educational institutions including schools and colleges mostly remained open while trading activities at Burrabazar in the city were more or less normal.

According to a state official, the attendance at the state secretariat Nabanna was over 95 per cent and overall attendance in state government offices was 97 per cent.

Train services in Eastern and South-Eastern Railways were largely normal though the Left Front supporters tried to block the rail tracks in Hooghly district’s Sreerampore, Kolkata’s Jadavpur station and Sealdah division’s Lakshmikantapur lines.

Additional police personnel have been deployed throughout the state to prevent any disruption or violence in connection with the strike. However, the Left Front and the Congress took out rallies in some places in support of the strike.

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state supported the issues on which the shut down has been called, but opposed the strike in the state in line with the party’s stated policy against any kind of strikes.

State Minister and Trinamool’s Secretary General Partha Chatterjee had said that the government would take all measures to maintain public utility services.

State-run transport corporations are running more buses than usual to ensure that commuters are not inconvenienced, a state official said.

A special arrangement has been made with a nationalised insurance company to extend insurance benefits of up to Rs 75,000 to the owner of any vehicle, damaged by miscreants on Monday, a state official said.

The owner of the vehicle would have to file a complaint within 12 hours of the incident and will be reimbursed within 72 hours, the officer added.

After NC, PDP to boycott municipal and Panchayat polls

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday announced a boycott of the upcoming municipal and Panchayat polls in Jammu and Kashmir and asked the government to review its decision to hold elections amid an atmosphere of insecurity.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said there was a sense of insecurity among the people of the state with the “sword of Article 35A dangling on our heads”. She said the party had unanimously decided to stay away from the electoral exercise.

“The party urges the government to review its decision to hold local body elections at this time against the will of the people and instead focus on confidence-building measures,” the former Chief Minister told reporters here after meeting her party leaders and MLAs.

“Our Party will not contest the polls as the prevailing situation is not favourable for such an exercise.

“The government is not keen on defending 35-A and insecurity has crept in the population. The party therefore urges the government to review its decision to hold polls at this time”.

A dissident PDP MLA, Javaid Beigh, who represents Baramulla Assembly, was present at the meeting chaired by Mehbooba Mufti.

But five other PDP MLAs including Haseeb Drabu, Imran Ansari, Abid Ansari, Abdul Majeed Padder and Abbas Wani did not attend the meeting.

The National Conference has already announced a boycott of the elections.

Governor Satya Pal Malik has announced that the elections to urban local bodies in the state will be held between October 1 and 5 and to the Panchayats between November 8 and December 4.

Article 35A of the Constitution prohibits outsiders from owning land and property in Jammu and Kashmir.

Manmohan seeks opposition unity to defeat BJP

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Urging the opposition to unite in their shared desire to defeat the BJP in the next Lok Sabha elections, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday hit out at the Modi government for the crises-like all-round situation in the country due to rising fuel prices and farm distress.

Manmohan Singh said the BJP-led central government had “miserably” failed in controlling fuel prices and fulfilling the promises made to the people before the 2014 elections.

“Circumstances show that the situation has gone beyond control now. Farmers, businessmen, youth are facing crises in their respective fields. The government has failed miserably in fulfilling the promises made to common people.

“The time has come to change the party in the Centre and this will happen very soon,” he said, addressing a protest rally at the Ramlila ground here.

“The parties opposing the present government should forget their differences and come together for maintaining the unity and secular identity of the country. We need to draw the collective benefit of the unity shown (here),” he said.

The former Prime Minister along with UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi joined the protest march that started from Rajghat and culminated at Ramlila ground.

The march as part of a nationwide protest, or “Bharat Bandh”, was led by Congress President Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders.

The former Prime Minister appreciated the presence of around 20 political opposition parties joining the Congress in the protest against the government.

He said it was a significant moment ahead of the general elections next year and “we should take advantage of this (unity) and bring about a movement” in the country.

The protest was called by the Congress and Left parties against the spiralling cost of petrol and diesel which have reached record levels.

The protest was supported by several opposition parties including the Janata Dal-Secular, Trinamool Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Nationalist Congress Party, Loktantrik Janata Dal, Rashtriya Lok Dal, All India United Democratic Front, Revolutionary Socialist Party and Aam Aadmi Party among others.

CBS chairman resigns after sexual assault accusations

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Leslie Moonves, the powerful longtime Chairman and Chief Executive of CBS, has resigned in the wake of sexual assault accusations, concluding a tumultuous six weeks that saw him fall from the position of one of the countrys most respected media titans.

The company announced the news in a statement late Sunday, saying that CBS Chief Operating Officer Joseph Ianniello will take over as interim CEO and President, both Moonves’ titles, as the company looks for a permanent replacement, The Washington Post reported.

The announcement ends Moonves’ 20-year tenure.

In July, six women accused the media titan of sexual-misconduct in The New Yorker that led to the board hiring outside lawyers to conduct an investigation into Moonves and activists to call for his removal.

On the magazine’s website earlier on Sunday, an additional six women alleged behaviour that includes sexual misconduct, harassment and retaliation.

The allegations also include Moonves exposing himself without consent and the use of physical violence and intimidation to silence the women.

In response to the New Yorker story, a CBS spokesman on Sunday told The Washington Post: “CBS takes these allegations very seriously. Our Board of Directors is conducting a thorough investigation of these matters, which is ongoing.”

Moonves is still expected to collect millions as part of a settlement with the board, though the company said it will withhold any decision on payment until after the investigation is complete.

According to a statement from the company, Moonves and CBS will also “donate $20 million to one or more organisations that support the #MeToo movement and equality for women in the workplace.

“The donation, which will be made immediately, has been deducted from any severance benefits that may be due Moonves following the Board’s ongoing independent investigation.”

Moonves has been with CBS since 1995 and has held the title of Chief Executive for the past 15 years.

In early 2006 CBS became a separate entity as it split from Viacom, and has since been one of the most profitable in entertainment.
