DFC and USAID Launches USD $55 Million Loan Financing Program As Part of COVID-19 Relief for Sustainable Agriculture Development in India

September 25, 2021 by Nasheman

Nasheman News

Bangalore: The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today that they are jointly sponsoring a $55 million (approximately 400 crores in Indian rupees) credit guarantee to address the economic impact of COVID-19 by supporting loans to farmer producer organizations, ag-tech companies, and companies engaged in clean energy solutions for the agriculture sector.  The initiative will introduce and support clean technologies for smallholder farmers, particularly women, that improve market linkages and increase incomes while having a positive impact on the environment.

Called the “India Covid Response Program for Agriculture Transition”, this eight-year program will reach more than 200,000 smallholder farmers in India and is supported by direct grants from several international foundations and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.  Furthermore, the financial support will be complemented with technical assistance led by the Rabo Foundation to focus on areas of business management and help in building stronger linkages to the markets.  Loans to farmer producer organizations will be provided by three Indian lenders – Samunnati Financial, Maanaveeya, and Avanti Finance.

“At USAID, we believe that providing farmers with access to cleaner, more affordable technology can improve the livelihood and climate resilience of the community.  In addition, clean technologies offer a sustainable alternative to meeting agricultural demand, address food insecurity and improve nutritional outcomes.  This support will address the health and economic needs of vulnerable farmer communities severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Warren Harrity, Director, Program Support, USAID/India.

“Only by joining forces and creating valuable partnerships, can we provide smallholder farmers the space and opportunities they need to improve their livelihoods and adapt to the challenges of climate change.  This not only supports the farmers who receive the direct support; it also benefits their local communities and environment in India,” said Pim Mol, CEO, Rabo Foundation.

“We are glad to be part of this mission empowering collectives for the benefit of smallholder farmers with a transition towards more sustainable livelihoods.  We strongly believe that aggregation can solve multiple problems faced by smallholder farmers and this initiative can go a long way towards scaling the collectives through encouraging participation by mainstream capital providers,” remarked Manish Thakkar from Avanti Finance.

Anil Kumar SG from Samunnati Financial mentioned “This initiative will offer customized financial solutions to entities interested in adopting climate smart and green solutions.”

“To counter COVID-19’s effects on the agricultural sector, this timely project will play a catalytic role in making smallholder farmers more climate change resilient while simultaneously directly impacting the communities we serve,” said Dr. Gouri Sankar from Maanaveeya.

About DFC:  The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) is America’s development bank.  DFC partners with the private sector to finance solutions to the most critical challenges facing the developing world today.  It invests across sectors including energy, healthcare, critical infrastructure, and technology.  DFC also provides financing for small businesses and women entrepreneurs to create jobs in emerging markets.

About USAID:  The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is a world premier international development agency and a catalytic actor driving development results.  USAID works to help lift lives, build communities, and advance democracy.  USAID’s work advances U.S. national security and economic prosperity; demonstrates American generosity; and helps countries progress along their development journey.

About Rabo Foundation:  Established in 1974, Rabo Foundation is the corporate foundation of Rabobank:  a global leader in food and agriculture lending.  Rabo Foundation invests in the self-sufficiency of farmer organizations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, by providing finance and by sharing the cooperative banking and agricultural expertise that the Rabobank Group has built up over many years.  This helps organizations achieve their goals of offering smallholder farmers access to financing, savings opportunities, knowledge, and new markets.

·        The company plans to appoint a team of around 500 distributors, dealers, and retailers across each of these states

Mumbai: Shyam Steel is a well-known player in the retail markets of eastern, north-eastern, and northern markets of the country and has been a major supplier of TMT bars to mega infrastructure projects. The company has established a strong network of over 6000 distributors, dealers, and retailers in the markets it currently operates in, and will now market its brand across central, western, and southern India.

The company will be establishing its presence across every corner of these sates. It has developed a highly efficient network of third-party logistics service providers to take its products to every corner of the country smoothly and punctually. The company plans to appoint a team of around 500 distributors, dealers, and retailers across each of these sates to ensure easy accessibility of its brand to home builders at reasonable prices.

Shyam Steel has played a key role in transforming steel selling from a commodity model to a brand marketing model. Its TMT brand enjoys a very high recall among consumers.

Its branding strategy has converted the cyclical commodity, TMT, to a product with year-round demand. This has helped the company to remarkably improve its sales volumes.

Commenting on the market expansion plan of the company, Mr. Suket Beriwal, Director, Shyam Steel said “We are excited about our entry into the central, western and southern states of the country. Individual home builders very often either do not have access to high quality TMT or pay a very high premium for it. With our entry into these markets, consumers will have the very high quality of a national TMT brand within their budgets. With more than six decades of experience and goodwill, we are confident of a very positive response from the home builders of these states.”

The success of the brand lies in the property of its FlexiStrong TMT rebar, which is not just strong but a perfect balance of strength and flexibility. The company’s products are endorsed by Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma – two superlative personalities in their chosen fields. Their relationship reflects the perfect balance of strength and flexibility that is the property of their TMT.

About the company:

Shyam Steel Industries Limited is a steel company headquartered in Kolkata. Beginning in 1953, today it has multiple plants including one of eastern India’s first privately owned Integrated Steel Plants at Durgapur of West Bengal. In 2020-21 the company had a turnover of 3000 plus crores. Strengthened by more than six decades of experience, with pure steel coming out of its integrated plant, having hundreds of mega projects in its portfolio, and a product that is a perfect balance of strength and flexibility, Shyam Steel is poised to establish itself firmly in the TMT retail segment in every part of India.

Hate speech case: Delhi High Court grants bail to organiser of Jantar Mantar event

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday granted bail to Preet Singh, one of organisers of an event at Jantar Mantar where communal slogans were allegedly raised last month.

The petition is allowed. The petitioner has been granted bail, said Justice Mukta Gupta.

Singh, who was remanded to judicial custody on August 10 after his arrest, is accused of creating enmity between different groups and inciting the youth to propagate against a particular religion at a rally at Jantar Mantar here on August 8.

In his plea filed through advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, Singh claimed that he was not involved in giving any inflammatory speech or raising any slogan against any person or community .

He asserted that the demand of establishing a Hindu nation did not attract Section 153A (hate speech) of the IPC and that he was not even present at the site at the time of sloganeering.

The Delhi Police had opposed Singh’s plea for his release on bail.

On August 27, Additional Sessions Judge Anil Antil had refused bail to Singh, arrested by the Delhi Police in the case, saying right to assemble and freedom to air one’s thoughts are cherished under the Constitution.

However, these are not absolute and have to be exercised with inherent reasonable restrictions.

Want justice, not compensation: Family of J-K cop killed in case of ‘mistaken identity’

September 24, 2021 by Nasheman

Jagti camp (Jammu)(PTI): The family of slain policeman Ajay Dhar, who was apparently shot dead by a colleague in a case of mistaken identity in Kupwara, accused the police department of attempting a “cover-up”, and demanded justice.

Dhar, a follower in the police department posted in Handwara, died in the early hours of Wednesday after being shot by a sentry guarding a temple who mistook him for a militant, officials said.

According to preliminary investigation, Dhar was going from the Handwara police station to sleep at the temple located in main Handwara town, they said.

“The victim was using headphones on his mobile phone. When he reached near the temple, the guard there observed suspicious movement and signalled him to stop. Dhar apparently could not hear the sentry, prompting him to open fire,” one of the officials said on Wednesday.

As Dhar’s mortal remains reached his residence at Jagti camp on the outskirts of Jammu city on Thursday, hundreds of Kashmiri Pandits gathered outside and held protests, demanding a probe into the killing.

“Please return my son alive. Who fires at the head of a person,” Dhar’s grief-stricken mother lashed out.

Speaking to reporters, the victim’s younger sister, Neha, said, “We want justice for my brother Ajay, not compensation or money. The police are telling lies. We want a high level probe by the NIA.”

She added that they don’t trust the statements of the police, and the government must order a probe by either the NIA or the CBI.

“It is a cold-blooded murder,” another family member alleged.

Lashing out at the administration and the police for their failure to safeguard Kashmiri Pandits in the valley, Ajay Dhar’s grandmother said, “We want justice and punishment to those involved in it, not compensation.”

Terming the incident a “cold-blooded murder”, the BJP accused the police of a cover-up and demanded a high-level probe.

J-K BJP vice-president Ajay Bharti said the incident will have repercussions on the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley if a probe is not ordered.

Kashmiri Pandit leader Vikas Raina also demanded a probe by CBI into the circumstance of his death.

Several KP organisations, including the APMCC, HGT, ASKPC, KPC, AIKS, KPS and the Panun Kashmir, also demanded a high-level probe.
