Donald Trump mocks Indian call center, but says India a great nation

April 23, 2016 by Nasheman

trump

Washington: Republican presidential front runner Donald Trump has used fake Indian accent to mock a call center representative in India.

At the same time, he described India as a great place, asserting that he is not angry with Indian leaders.

The billionaire from New York said that he called up his credit card company to find out whether their customer support is based in the US or overseas.

“Guess what, you’re talking to a person from India. How the hell does that work?” he told his supporters in Delaware.

“So I called up, under the guise I’m checking on my card, I said, ‘Where are you from?'” Trump said and then he copied the response from the call center in a fake Indian accent.

“We are from India,” Trump impersonated the response.

“Oh great, that’s wonderful,” he said as he pretended to hang up the phone.

“India is great place. I am not upset with other leaders. I am upset with our leaders for being so stupid,” he said.

“I am not angry with China. I am not angry at Japan. I am not angry with Vietnam, India…all these countries.”

Trump mentioned the fake call to India during his remarks on what he described as “crooked banking.”

Delaware, is a hub for the America’s banking and credit- card industry. Topping the list include Bank of America, Citibank Delaware, M&T Bank and PNC Financial Services Group.

“They are making a lot of money,” he said.

“You can’t allow policies that allows China, Mexico, Japan, Vietnam, India. You can’t allow policies that allows business to be ripped out of the United States like candy from a baby,” Trump said in his address.

“The manufacturing jobs are being stolen. Our jobs are being taken. We are losing at every front. There is nothing good. Our country does not win anymore. The jobs are being stripped. Factories are closing. We are not going to let this happen anymore,” he said.

Trump said he has as many as 378 companies registered in Delaware, where the Republican presidential primaries is scheduled on April 26 along with several other states.

He is leading in polls against his other primary rivals.

In his speech, Trump praised Delaware’s status as a tax shelter and slammed President Barack Obama for not using the term “radical Islamists” in the fight against terrorism. “I want to run against crooked Hillary,” he said, reiterating that a Trump vs Clinton race would bring the greatest turn out in the history of the American elections.

“We will stomp on Hillary Clinton no one’s ever done.”

He was also critical of Indian-American South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who did not endorse him during the primary.

Delaware has 16 delegates. Trump has 845 delegates, followed by Ted Cruz (559) and John Kasich (148).

All-round Bangalore outclass Pune by 13 runs in IPL

April 23, 2016 by Nasheman

virat-kohli

Pune: Star batsmen A.B. de Villiers and Virat Kohli smashed quick-fire half-centuries followed by a disciplined bowling effort which guided Royal Challengers Bangalore to a comfortable 13-run victory over Rising Pune Supergiants in an Indian Premier League (IPL) contest here on Friday.

De Villiers (83 off 46 balls) and Virat Kohli (80 off 63 balls) helped Bangalore post a competitive total of 185/3 in 20 overs. In reply, despite opener Ajinkya Rahane’s 60, the hosts lost wickets at regular intervals and could manage only 172/8 in 20 overs.

Kane Richardson (3-13) and Shane Watson (2-31) were the pick of the bowlers for Bangalore, while Harshal Patel and Tabraiz Shamsi claimed one wicket each.

Chasing a challenging target of 186, Pune got off to a disappointing start, losing opener Faf du Plessis (2) and Kevin Pietersen (0 retired hurt) inside two overs.

The hosts received yet another blow as the side lost Steve Smith (4), after Virat Kohli ran him out to put Pune in a spot of bother at 18/2 in 2.3 overs.

But opener Rahane along with new batsman and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (41) used their experience to best effect to hold on to the wicket and sneaking in with runs to help team post 36/2 after completion of powerplay.

Rahane showed his class yet again with the bat to bring up his half-century in just 37 balls and help team stay in hunt for the run chase.

Dhoni-Rahane combined to post 73/2 in 10 overs.

As Rahane was looking set after striking eight boundaries, debutant left-arm chinaman bowler Shamsi fooled the right-handed batsmen to get him stumped and put Bangalore back into the game.

But as Dhoni was aiming to take on the bowlers, he was dismissed in the 16th over to have the team in trouble.

Thisara Perera hit Patel for 25 runs in the 18th over to put Pune back into the run chase. But the 19th over saw Watson dismissing Perera to have match turned on in favour of the visitors.

Earlier put into bat, Bangalore got off a slow start, losing opener K.L. Rahul (7) in the fourth over to put a breaks on the scoring.

But his opening partner Kohli and de Villiers kept the scoreboard ticking, sneaking in with ones, twos to take the score to 48/1 after completion of the powerplay.

But soon after the powerplay, the in-form duo unleashed their pyrotechnics to smash boundaries and sixes at regular intervals without losing any wickets to take team to 97/1 in 11 overs that set up the stage for yet another big score.

Kohli and de Villiers made it look simple as the Indian and South African pair brought up their 100-run partnership for the second wicket in just 69 balls and helped their team reach 128/1 in 15 overs.

Kohli got a life in the 16th over while batting on 49. Trying to hit off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin out of the park, he eventually got a top edge which was put down by Ankit Sharma at mid-off.

The duo put on 155-run partnership for the second wicket to take team to a competitive total, before Kohli and De Villiers were dismissed in successive balls in 20th over.

Perera (3-34) was the pick of the bowlers for Pune.

Brief Scores: Royal Challengers Bangalore: 185/3 in 20 overs (AB de Villiers 83, Virat Kohli 80; Thisara Perera 3-34) vs Rising Pune Supergiants 172/8 in 20 overs (Ajinkya Rahane 60; Kane Richardson 3-13, Shane Watson 2-31).

Pop icon Prince dies aged 57

April 22, 2016 by Nasheman

Fans mourn one of the most influential but elusive figures in music, found dead at his Minnesota home.

Prince

by Al Jazeera

Thousands of fans of Prince have gathered for a vigil in Los Angeles after the pop icon was found dead in his home in suburban Minneapolis. He was 57.

A local sheriff said that police deputies called to Prince’s studio found the superstar unresponsive in an elevator at his home on Thursday. Attempts to resuscitate the singer failed, the sheriff told the Associated Press news agency.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

The Minneapolis native rose to fame in the late 1970s with the hits I Wanna Be Your Lover and Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?, and soared over the following decade with such albums as 1999 and Purple Rain.

He was widely acclaimed as one of the most inventive musicians of his era.

The title song from the album 1999 includes one of the most widely quoted refrains of popular culture: “Tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999.”

The man born Prince Rogers Nelson stood just 1.57m and seemed to summon the most original and compelling sounds at will, whether playing guitar in a flamboyant style that openly drew upon Jimi Hendrix, switching his vocals from a nasally scream to an erotic falsetto or turning out album after album of stunningly original material.

During last year’s Grammy awards, he showed his political side, speaking up for racial justice and for long-format recordings.

“Albums still matter. Like books and black lives, albums still matter,” he said.

Fiercely independent

He was also fiercely protective of his independence, battling his record company over control of his material and even his name.

Prince once wrote “slave” on his face in protest at not owning his work and famously battled and then departed from his label, Warner Bros, before returning a few years ago.

In 2004, Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame, which hailed him as a musical and social trailblazer.

“He rewrote the rule book, forging a synthesis of black funk and white rock that served as a blueprint for cutting-edge music in the Eighties,” reads the Hall’s dedication.

“Prince made dance music that rocked and rock music that had a bristling, funky backbone. From the beginning, Prince and his music were androgynous, sly, sexy and provocative.”

The singer’s death came two weeks after he cancelled concerts in Atlanta because he was not feeling well.

A small group of fans quickly gathered in the rain on Thursday outside his music studio, Paisley Park, where Prince’s gold records are on the walls and the purple motorcycle he rode in his 1984 breakout movie, Purple Rain, is on display.

The white building, surrounded by a fence, is about 30km southwest of Minneapolis.

Steven Scott, 32, of Eden Prairie, said he was at Paisley Park last Saturday for Prince’s dance party. He called Prince “a beautiful person” whose message was that people should love one another.

“He brought people together for the right reasons,” Scott said.

by Al Jazeera

Air strikes launched by the Syrian government have killed several civilians and injured dozens in the northern city of Aleppo as the ceasefire between the government and opposition groups crumbles.

At least 10 people were killed across Aleppo and several dozen injured in the attacks, according to sources on the ground.

The strikes targeted four different, predominantly civilian areas in the city, said Zouhir Al Shimale, a local journalist.

“These are all civilian areas, and people were near or at the mosques when the strikes hit,” he told Al Jazeera by telephone, estimating that at least 30 civilians were injured in the Bustan al-Qasr area alone.

“The bombardment happened during the Friday prayers. I was on the way prayers when it happened in the al-Mashhad [neighbourhood]. People started going out of the mosque and running.”

Shimale said Aleppo’s streets mostly emptied following the attacks, with people rushing home to avoid being in open spaces.

“People have gotten used to it. They know that at any moment, the regime could strike again.”

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, government air strikes also targeted towns across Syria’s Idlib province, killing at least three civilians.

Negotiations collapse

The Syrian conflict started as a largely unarmed uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, but has since morphed into a full-on civil war that has claimed the lives of more than 260,000 people, according to the United Nations’ statistics.

The opposition cited the dire humanitarian situation and the Syrian army offensive when it walked out of peace talks in Geneva this week, saying it needed a “pause”. The future of Assad also proved a major sticking point.

The already shaky ceasefire between the government and some rebels was severely strained on Tuesday when at least 44 people were killed in air strikes on two markets in the northwest.

The Geneva talks are aimed at ending the five-year war by fashioning a political transition, writing a new constitution, and holding fresh elections by September 2017.

Karnataka to get Rs 723.23 crore drought relief from Centre

April 22, 2016 by Nasheman

Karnataka

Bengaluru: The Centre on Friday approved assistance of Rs.842.7 crore for drought-hit areas of Karnataka and flood-hit areas of Puducherry and Arunachal Pradesh, agriculture ministry officials said.

“The decision was taken by a high-level committee chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, which examined and endorsed the reports of a central team that visited the three states,” a senior official told IANS.

The meeting was also attended by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh, Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and senior officers of home, finance and agriculture ministries.

Karnataka will get Rs.723.23 crore, Puducherry Rs.35.14 crore and Arunachal Pradesh Rs.84.33 crore.

“The assistance of Rs.84.33 crore for Arunachal includes Rs.18 crore under the National Rural Drinking Water Programme,” the official said.

The agriculture ministry, in its own assessment and reports from states, says that 10 states, including Maharashtra and Karnataka, have declared drought.

More than Rs.10,000 crore has been given in central assistance to the affected states so far.

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, reeling under intense heat wave, have both sought central assistance for those hit by drought and water scarcity.

The Andhra Pradesh government has urged the Centre to release Rs.10,000 crore to resolve its rural drinking water problem in the next three years. Telangana has placed a demand of Rs.3,000 crore as drought relief.

The Centre has so far sanctioned Rs.791 crore for Telangana, an official said.

IPL: Sunrisers Hyderabad halt Gujarat Lions’ charge

April 22, 2016 by Nasheman

Cricket

Rajkot: Sunrisers Hyderabad ended Gujarat Lions’ three-match winning streak with a 10-wicket thumping win in an Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Thursday.

Sunrisers rode on a blistering opening wicket partnership from captain David Warner (74 not out in 48 balls) and Shikhar Dhawan (53 not out in 41 deliveries) to overhaul the small target of 135 for eight in 20 overs with 5.1 overs to spare.

The visitors raced to 63 in six overs to set it up, thanks to early asssault from Warner, who hit three fours in the fourth over bowled by Praveen Kumar to launch the charge. The Australian hit nine fours in total.

His side also got the good news of Dhawan’s returning to form as the left-hander took time to settle down before hitting some trademark shots towards the end as the visitors registered an easy win — their second on the trot.

Rival captain Suresh Raina utilised as many as seven bowlers, even using Dale Steyn and the returning Ravindra Jadeja — but none of them managed to break the opening stand.

However, the foundation of the big win was laid by bowlers, especially Man-of-the-Match Bhuvneshwar Kumar (4/29) and Mustafizur Rahman (1/19). Raina cracked 75 but others struggled against the impressive bowling performance from Hyderabad.

After Warner won the toss and elected to bowl against, Gujarat got off to a strong start despite losing Australian opening batsman Aaron Finch early.

Finch, who had scores of 74, 50 and 67 not out respectively in the first three matches, lost his wicket for a duck. The right-hander missed the line as an incoming delivery from Bhuvneshawar disturbed his stumps.

Raina dominated the 56-run second-wicket stand with Brendon McCullum (18). Raina looked in ominous touch from the first ball he faced as his powerful front-foot push sent the ball towards the cover boundary in a flash in the first over. It was followed by a gentle straight drive which also had the same result.

Left-arm medium pacer Barinder Sran struggled with his line, asking for punishment by bowling outside the leg stump and Raina and New Zealander McCullum were in a punishing mood.

Later, against the spinners, the left-hander Raina used his feet to nice effect — welcoming Deepak Hooda with a slap towards the cover boundary and later a hoick to the mid-wicket ropes.

Left-arm spinner Bipul Sharma ended the partnership when McCullum was holed out at mid-wicket by Hooda, as Gujarat reached 56/2 in 7.2 overs.

Gujarat then lost Dinesh Karthik (8) and Dwayne Bravo (8) fell cheaply. Karthik offered a catch to Bipul at deep square leg off a full toss from off-spinner Hooda, while Bravo failed to negotiate a slower ball from Sran only to be caught by Bhuvneshwar at deep square leg. Following Bravo’s departure, Gujarat were 91 for four in 13.1 overs.

Meanwhile Raina completed his fifty in 34 deliveries as the run rate dropped due to the quick wickets.

All-rounder Jadeja, who returned to the team after missing a game due to his marriage, shared a 26-run stand with Raina until Bangladesh left-arm pacer Mustafizur dismissed the former (14).

Mustafizur continued to be impressive with his death-overs bowling as he conceded only 19 runs in his four overs.

In the final over, Bhuvneshwar conceded only six runs while picking three wickets as the hosts struggled to score 135/8.

Brief scores: Gujarat Lions: 135/8 (Suresh Raina 75; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 4/29). Sunrisers Hyderabad: 137/0 in 14.5 overs (David Warner 74 not out, Shikhar Dhawan 53 not out).

15 dead in landslide in Tawang, PM expresses grief

April 22, 2016 by Nasheman

Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar: At least 15 people lost their lives and several others were missing when a massive landslide triggered by heavy rains hit a labour camp in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday.

15 bodies have been retrieved from the spot along with one injured person, official sources said.  Two other workers are feared to be trapped in the debris.

The incident occurred at around 3.30 AM when 17 labourers engaged in construction work were inside the camp in Thamla, about four km away from Tawang town, bordering China, Additional Deputy Commissioner (headquarters) Lod Gambo said.

Senior officers are on the spot and rescue and relief operation was on.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives. In a message, the Prime Minister extended his condolences to the bereaved families.
The district administration deployed men and materials in the rescue operation, including two JCBs.

The PWD road between New Lebrang and government higher secondary school has also been blocked due to landslide while damage to residential buildings has been reported from the area.

Heavy rainfall in the past few days in the district resulted in a flood like situation which severely damaged the Kitpi Ph-I and Ph-II hydel projects.

Power department officials said restoration work could not be started due to the continuous rains and both the power stations had been shut down.

Taking serious note of the situation, DC Duly Kamduk has directed the department to assess the damage and submit a report for action.

SC stays HC order on President’s rule in Uttarakhand till Apr 27

April 22, 2016 by Nasheman

Uttarakhand

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today stayed till April 27 the judgement of the Uttarakhand High Court quashing the imposition of President’s rule, giving a new turn to the continuing political drama in the state by restoring the Central rule there.

Before passing a brief order, a bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra and Shiva Kirti Singh recorded an undertaking given by Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi that the “Union of India shall not revoke the Presidential proclamation till the next date of hearing”.

The apex court clarified that it was keeping in abeyance the judgement of the High Court till the next date of hearing on April 27 as a measure of balance for both the parties as the copy of the verdict was not made available to the parties.

While listing the matter for hearing on April 27, the bench said that the High Court shall provide the judgement passed yesterday to the parties by April 26 and on the same date the copy of the verdict shall also be placed before the apex court.

The Supreme Court’s stay has the effect of undoing the revival of the Congress government led by Harish Rawat by the High Court judgement yesterday.

During the hearing, the bench also observed that as a matter of propriety the High Court should have signed the verdict so that it would be appropriate for it to go into the appeal.

The apex court issued notice to Harish Rawat and Chief Seceretary of the state on the petition by Centre challenging the quashing of Presidential proclamation under Article 356 of the Constitution in the state.

Appearing for the Centre, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, along with senior advocate Harish Salve, pressed for the stay of the HC judgement.

He said how one party can be put at advantage and assume the office of Chief Minister when the other party is pushed to disadvantage in the absence of the judgement.

Senior advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Kapil Sibal, appearing for Rawat and the Assembly Speaker, argued hard against the passing of any interim order saying “you are allowing the appeal by giving the stay”.

Sibal was of the view that allowing stay of operation of the High Court verdict would be like enforcing the proclamation of the President rule.

During the jam-packed hearing, the bench sought to pacify both the parties saying that it has to take a balanced view as this is a Constitutional court.

“We will take on record the copy of the judgement and go through it. This matter may go to Constitution bench,” the bench said.

Hitmen hired by Hindutva group may have killed Kalburgi, say CID officials

April 22, 2016 by Nasheman

M M Kalburgi

Bengaluru: Sources in the Criminal Investigation Department, which is probing the murder case of Kannada scholar MM Kalburgi said that supari killers, hired by a Hindutva group might have committed the crime.

CID officials said 20 such Hindutva groups were under surveillance over the past three months, and they are now close to cracking the identity of the group. However, they refused to comment further on the issue as it could hamper the probe.

CID sources said they had been working on the theory that hired hitmen shot down Kalburgi at his Kalyan Nagar residence in Dharwad on August 30 last year. When quizzed whether the new lead meant the sleuths had zeroed in on the group involved in the murder, the official said they were close to cracking the identity of the killers. The official also said they believed the same group and probably the same hit men may have been involved in the murders of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar and social activist Govind Pansare.

The basis for this, sleuths said, was the ballistic report of the bullets used in the Kalburgi murder that linked the weapon used in the two earlier assassinations. If proved right, it would be contrary to the arrests made by the Maharashtra police in the two murders. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Pansare murder case, had arrested Samir Gaikwad, an alleged activist from Goa-based Sanatan Sanstha, for the murder. The police are on the lookout for another absconding accused, Rudra Patil, in the case.

All officials involved in the probe, led by Inspector-General of Police Hemanth Nimbalkar, have been camping in Dharwad for the past two days. They even visited the house of the slain scholar on Thursday. Officials said they wanted to verify certain information with the family members, but beyond that the visit was a courtesy one.

Mr. Nimbalkar said they reviewed the probe into the case in the light of the new leads, and brainstormed over the next course of action. This is the first such meeting in recent months.
