Team India for Zimbabwe and West Indies tours announced

May 23, 2016 by Nasheman

India-cricket

Mumbai: Rookie Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur was the lone new face in India’s Test squad for the tour of West Indies, while a second-string team led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni was picked by the selectors for the limited-overs series in Zimbabwe, here on Monday.

The 24-year-old right-arm medium pacer was a surprise pick in the 17-member squad with the selectors reposing their faith in the line-up that had played the last Test series against South Africa at home.

Thakur was rewarded for his consistent performance in the domestic cricket where he took 41 wickets in 11 matches for Mumbai at an average of 24.51. His best figures in an innings were six for 107.

Varun Aaron, who was part of the team during the series against South Africa, was dropped with a fit-again Mohammed Shami returning to the squad which will have Ajinkya Rahane as its new vice-captain.

All-rounder Stuart Binny retained his place in the team announced by new BCCI Secretary Ajay Shirke following a meeting of the selection committee here.

The team, to be led by Virat Kohli, also had no place for veterans such as Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh despite their decent performances in the ongoing Indian Premier League. The tour of West Indies comprises four Tests in mid-July but the exact dates for the series are yet to be formalised.

“No one has been rested. No one wrote to BCCI or called us (to say) they were not available or they should be rested. It was the decision of the selection committee to pick a young side for Zimbabwe and another side for West Indies,” selection panel head Sandeep Patil told reporters.

Kohli has been rested from the limited-overs series against Zimbabwe, scheduled from June 11 to 20, along with Murali Vijay and Ashish Nehra, who is due to undergo a surgery.

The selectors have opted to pick a completely new-look team for the tour of Zimbabwe with Vidharbha left-handed opener Faiz Fazal, off-spinner Jayant Yadav, Punjab middle-order batsman Mandeep Singh and IPL star Yuzvendra Chahal being the uncapped players in the side.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni will captain the squad as he will be largely out of action due to India’s busy Test schedule this year.

Squad for Zimbabwe: M S Dhoni (c), K L Rahul, Maneesh Pandey, Karun Nair, Ambati Rayudu, Rishi Dhawan, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jaspreet Bumrah, Barinder Sran, Mandeep Singh, Jaidev Unadkat, Yuzvendra Chahal.

Squad for West Indies: Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane (v-c), Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, K L Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Wriddhimaan Saha, R Ashwin, Amit Mishra, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur, Stuart Binny.

The attacks hit the cities of Tartus and Jableh [EPA/SANA handout]

by Al Jazeera

More than 120 people have been killed in multiple attacks claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group in areas controlled by the Syrian government, a monitoring group said.

Syrian state TV also reported the attacks, putting the death toll at 78.

Simultaneous car bombs and suicide bombers hit bus stations, hospitals and elsewhere in the coastal cities of Tartus and Jableh in Latakia province on Monday, appearing to severely breach government defences, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Footage broadcast by the state-run Ikhbariya news channel of what it said were scenes of the blasts in Jableh showed several twisted and incinerated cars and minivans.

Pictures circulated om social media showed dead bodies in the back of pick-up vans and charred body parts on the ground.

The Syrian Observatory said that at least 73 people were killed in Jableh, and 48 in Tartus.

It said there were seven explosions that ripped through both locations simultaneously: Four in Jableh, including three suicide bombs and one car bomb, and four in Tartus, two suicide bombers and one car bomb.

Hospital blast

In Jableh, dozens were killed when a car bomb went off near a bus station, followed by a suicide bomber who detonated his explosive belt inside the station. Two men blew themselves up at the electricity company and outside the emergency entrance of a city hospital.

Dozens more were killed in Tartus when a car bomb went off in the bus station, and then two men blew themselves up when people gathered, according to the observatory.

ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack through one of its media arms, Amaq.

“It is the first time in this war that simultaneous attacks of this scale took place in Latakia,” Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker, reporting from Gaziantep in neighbouring Turkey, said.

A Russian naval base is located in Latakia and Jableh is extremely close to a Russian airbase, Dekker said.

The Kremlin made a brief statement expressing concern about the attacks, adding that rising tension in the country underscored the need to continue with peace talks.

IPL: RCB beat Delhi by six wickets to qualify for play-offs

May 23, 2016 by Nasheman

virat-kohli

Raipur: Leading from the front, skipper Virat Kohli (54 not out) smashed yet another half-century to guide his Royal Challengers Bangalore to a comfortable six-wicket victory over Delhi Daredevils in their Indian Premier League clash on Sunday.

With the win, RCB climbed to second spot in points table with 16 points from 14 games and thus qualify for play-offs. They will now face Gujarat Lions in the first Qualifier 1 on May 24 in Bengaluru.

Batting first, riding on Quinton de Kock’s 52-ball 60, Delhi managed to post 138/8 in 20 overs but RCB easily chased down the target, posting 139/4 with 11 balls to spare.

Delhi’s IPL campaign ended here as they were knocked out of last four berth.

RCB got off to a poor start losing swashbuckling opener Chris Gayle (1) in the very first over itself.

Bangalore received yet another blow as Delhi skipper Zaheer Khan who returned for his second over dismissed the dangerous A.B. de Villiers (6) in the third over to have RCB on the back foot at 17/2.

But Bangalore skipper Kohli who has been in stupendous form this season played his natural game along with incoming batsman K.L. Rahul (38) and the right-handed duo added crucial 66-run partnership for the third wicket.

As Rahul was nearing yet another half-century, Carlos Brathwaite came in and dismissed the right-hander off his first ball to have RCB reduced to 83/3 in 11th over.

Despite wickets at the other end, Kohli played sensibly sneaking in with ones, twos and couple of boundaries to stay in course for the run chase.

Shane Watson (14) stay at the crease was also short-lived as he was dismissed in the 15th over to put Delhi back into the game.

But Kohli used his experience to best effect to guide his team over the line in style. He was well supported in the end by Stuart Binny (16 not out)

For Delhi, Zaheer, Morris, Brathwaite, and Pawan Negi claimed one wicket each.

Earlier put into bat, Delhi lost Rishabh Pant (1) in the second over with the score at 11.

Pant tried to punch on the up a delivery from pacer Sreenath Aravind, but the ball held its line and flicked the outside edge of his bat and be caught behind.

De Kock together with No.3 batsman Karun Nair then put up a brief partnership.

But Nair (11) was dismissed after getting a promising start, superbly caught by Kohli off leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Nair played a booming drive to a flighted delivery. But Kohli completed a catch after sprinting a fair distance to reduce Delhi to 42/2 in the sixth over.

Sanju Samson (17) was the next man in and he too promised a lot. Hitting a six and a four to get settled but he lost his wicket in the 10th over with his team at 71/3.

They were in more trouble when Sam Billings (4) went cheaply as Gayle took a sharp catch of the bowling of pacer Chris Jordan.

Losing wickets after building small partnerships was hurting Delhi’s cause though de Kock held firm. But at 81/4 in 11.2 overs, Delhi needed someone beside de Kock who brought up his fifty in the 14th over with a single.

That didn’t happen. Instead, Delhi slipped further losing Negi (6) and Brathwaite (1) in the 15th over by Chris Gayle.

To make matters worse, de Kock went back in the next over, bowled by Jordan after hitting five fours and a six during his 52-ball knock.

That deprived Delhi of a strong finish to their innings, though Morris provided some lusty blows.

Leg spinner Chahal claimed 3/32 off his four overs while Gayle chipped in with 2/11 in two overs.

Brief Scores: Delhi Daredevils 138/8 in 20 overs (Quinton de Kock 60; Yuzvendra Chahal 3-32, Chris Gayle 2-11) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore 139/4 in 18.1 overs (Virat Kohli 54 not out; Carlos Brathwaite 1-18)

Mumbai: Policeman caught thrashing woman on camera

May 23, 2016 by Nasheman

moral-policing

Mumbai: A police officer has been caught on camera allegedly thrashing a woman inside the Kandivali police station here following which an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

According to Rakesh Shetty, who captured the episode on his mobile phone camera, the incident took place on May 11 when the woman and her husband reached the police station for a complaint but the accused–sub-inspector Riyaz Mulani– refused to lend them an ear.

Although the couple have not yet sought any action against the officer, Shetty went ahead and complained about the alleged assault on the woman to Kandivali Police.

His video grab shows the police officer hitting the lady with a wooden stick inside the police station premises.

Shetty, a real estate professional happened to be present in the police station at that time for filing a complaint regarding the threats he is receiving from the underworld.

The complainant told PTI that he also apprised all higher officials in the police department about the incident including the city police chief but no case has been lodged against Mulani yet.

Meanwhile, DCP (Operations) Sangramsingh Nishandar said that ACP (Borivali Division) has been entrusted with the job to conduct an inquiry into the alleged incident.

Pidilite Industries – Stellar quarter on most fronts; result update Q4FY16

May 23, 2016 by Nasheman

Pidilite

Pidilite’s Q4FY16 revenue, EBITDA and PAT growth at 18.9%, 78.1% and 89.2% YoY, respectively, was well ahead of estimates. The 7-quarter high sales growth was impressive, albeit on a low base (3.1% YoY volume growth in Q4FY15). Gross margin, at 55.3% (highest in at least 8 years), led by softer VAM during tough macro economic conditions is reflective of strong pricing power. Entry of Asian Paints into adhesives (Loctite) and increased aggression in waterproofing (Smartcare) need to be closely monitored. We remain positive in view of gradual demand recovery, new businesses and pick up in international growth. Maintain ‘BUY’.

Growth and margins: Firing on all cylinders
Key highlights: (i) 20.7% YoY growth it consumer and bazaar (C&B) business (highest in past 7 quarters; 13.6% YoY in Q3FY16) with 1,012bps YoY expansion in EBIT margin to 25.2%; (ii) sustained recovery in industrial business which grew 7.5% YoY with 20% EBIT margin (highest in 26 quarters); (iii) strong 35% constant currency growth in international business, led by US (grew 41% YoY driven by art materials) and SAARC (133% YoY growth led by Bangladesh and Sri Lanka); and (iv) 853bps/638bps YoY expansion in gross/EBITDA margins helped by soft raw materials prices

Q4FY16 conference call | Key highlights
Volume growth surpassed value growth. PIDI aspires to grow revenue in mid teens. Smaller towns are growing faster than bigger towns, though growth rate in small towns has slowed down. Nina’s annual revenue was INR1.6-1.7bn (14-15% like-to-like growth) with ~15% EBITDA margin. The company intends to target both B2B and B2C segments with newly acquired ICA brands; can earn annual sales of INR1bn. Outlook for international business is robust. Distribution network is ~3mn outlets. Currently, VAM prices are USD900-950.

Outlook and valuations: Positive; maintain ‘BUY’

We expect 19% CAGR over FY16-18E. Good performance of acquisitions (Bluecoat, Nina, ICA, Sri Lankan local glue player) and sustainability of robust growth in core business (paint players also saw robust growth in Q4FY16) outweigh risks from Asian Paints in water proofing and adhesives space. At CMP, the stock is trading at P/E of 31.3x FY18E. We maintain ‘BUY/Sector Outperformer’ with target price of INR731.

SpiceJet- One-offs jar; better times ahead

May 23, 2016 by Nasheman

Spicejet

Fuel benefits drive healthy show in a seasonally weak quarter
Despite being a seasonally weak quarter, Q4FY16 revenue of INR14.75bn was up 1% QoQ aided by 10% jump in volumes though partly offset by lower yields (down 8% QoQ). SpiceJet not only recouped volumes during the quarter (handled 3.39mn passenger versus 1.99mn in Q4FY15), but also recorded healthy ancillary income of 13.3% (of pax revenues) versus 8.6% YoY. While lower fuel costs continued to benefit (fuel CASK at INR0.87/ASKM, down 18% QoQ), the company had to provide INR1.5bn towards engine maintenance on reassessment of its liabilities which impacted margins. Thus, it reported lower EBITDAR at INR2.9bn versus INR4.3bn estimate. Adjusting for same and INR637mn of exceptional gains, adjusted PAT of INR1.5bn surpassed our INR1.3bn estimate.

Liabilities accounted for; to commence fiscal with renewed vigour
Having provided INR1.5bn for meeting maintenance related obligations for the leased aircraft and INR233mn towards aircraft redelivery expenses during the quarter (INR2.3bn also provided for aircraft redelivery in FY15), management has maintained all legacy issues have now been completely provided for. SpiceJet reduced debt and past dues by ~INR2bn each during FY16, which is expected to continue in FY17 as well.

Outlook and valuations: Positive; maintain ‘BUY’

After successfully maximising earnings through strong revenue management – pricing strategies and ancillary income– and fuel benefits, we believe incremental gains will be driven by volumes and cost rationalisation. We model for volume growth of ~20% and expect cost rationalisation benefits to help SpiceJet report earnings growth of 50% plus for FY17E, i.e. PAT of INR6.5bn (revised up by 10%). Maintain ‘BUY’ valuing the stock at 7.5x FY18E EV/EBITDAR, resulting in TP of INR102.
