Dharamsala: Debutant left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav’s four wickets helped India skittle out Australia for 300 in their first innings on the opening day of the fourth and final cricket Test here on Saturday.

India batted for an over and are still to open their scoring with both the openers Lokesh Rahul and Murali Vijay intact.

Electing to bat after winning the toss at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium here, skipper Steve Smith (111) and David Warner (56) set the tone for a massive Australian total, before chinaman Kuldeep triggered a batting collapse to bring India back into the game, with figures of 4/68.

Pacer Umesh Yadav complimented the rookie spinner well to pick 2/69 while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin took a wicket apiece.

The leading United Nations rights body has agreed to send a fact-finding mission to Myanmar to investigate alleged abuses by security forces against Rohingya Muslims.

Tens of thousands of people have fled Myanmar’s Rakhine state since the military began a security operation last October in response to what it says was an attack by Rohingya armed men on border posts, in which nine police officers were killed.

A February UN report said the operation targeting the Rohingya involved mass rapes and killings, possibly amounting to crimes against humanity.

The independent, international mission should be dispatched “urgently” to establish the facts of the alleged atrocities, the UN Human Rights Council decided in Geneva on Friday, in a resolution adopted by consensus.

The investigation would be launched “with a view to ensuring full accountability for perpetrators and justice for victims,” the resolution said.

The investigators must provide an oral update in September and a full report by this time next year, said the resolution backed by the European Union. Some countries, including China, India and Cuba, dissociated themselves from the resolution.

But the council stopped short of calling for a Commission of Inquiry – the world body’s highest level investigation – into the violence, despite a call by Yanghee Lee, the UN’s special rapporteur on rights in Myanmar.

Earlier this month, Lee told reporters that European leaders wanted to give Myanmar’s new civilian government led by Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi more time before launching a top-level inquiry.

Myanmar has been staunchly opposed to a Commission of Inquiry. The country’s rights council ambassador, Htin Lynn, also called the move to send a lower level investigation “unacceptable”.

Myanmar has launched its own domestic inquiry into possible crimes in Rahkine and appointed former UN chief Kofi Annan to head a commission responsible for healing long-simmering divisions between Buddhists and Muslims.

“Let the Myanmar people choose the best and the most effective course of action to address the challenges in Myanmar,” Lynn said, referring to Friday’s resolution.

“We will be doing what needs to be done and we will do it with great prudence and probity,” he added.

Activists welcomed what they called a “landmark decision” by the 47-member forum, while regretting that it was not a full international commission of inquiry, and called on the government to cooperate.

“It is unfortunate that the government of Burma/Myanmar has chosen to disassociate itself from this resolution,” John Samuel, executive director of FORUM-ASIA, said in a statement.

The US and British ban on laptops and tablets in carry-on luggage on some flights from the Middle East and North Africa has come into force, immediately drawing complaints from passengers at several airports.

The ban requires that personal devices larger than a mobile phone – such as tablets, laptops and cameras – be placed in checked baggage for US and Britain-bound flights.

The US restrictions apply to flights originating from 10 airports in countries including Turkey, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The British restrictions do not include the UAE or Qatar but do affect Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

The affected airports had until Saturday to implement the new rules.

The ban s have already led to discontent and complaints from passengers at Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul, which is one of those listed.

“This airport is so secured. The security level is so high compared to other airports in the rest of this part of the world. So why doing that from here?” Haggai Mazursky, a traveller, told Reuters news agency.

Al Jazeera’s Sinem Koseoglu, reporting from Istanbul, said the airlines were trying to limit passengers’ frustrations while holding talks with the US to lift the ban.

“They [Turkish airlines] believe that if the comfort of passenger is affected, it will impact the industry as a whole and the company as well,” she said.

“In efforts to make it easier for the passengers, they [Turkish Airlines] are offering free wifi during flights and will also launch a special mobile application in April.”

US and British officials said the decision to implement the security measures was a result of intelligence showing an increased risk for “terrorist activity” involving commercial aviation.

However, many observers in the Middle East and North Africa said the ban amounted to discrimination, while others questioned the basis for the electronics ban, saying they were a ploy to undermine the aviation industry of the countries affected.

“If you say it like this, you are saying everybody can be a terrorist. It’s not respectful. I think it’s not good,” said one passenger at Ataturk International Airport.

Geoffrey Thomas, the editor-in-chief of A irlineratings.com, said the UK joining the ban gave it some credibility that there might be an evolving threat, “but at the same time UK has not banned UAE and Qatar, which raises a lot of concern as to what this is all about”.

“Some suggest that the ban on UAE and Qatar has more to do with the Trump administration’s desire to curb the power of Middle East carriers, because one of the crazy parts about this ban is that Emirates from Dubai to Athens, and on to the US, is not included in the measures.

“And then you have cities that actually have security challenges, such as Lagos and Islamabad, which are also not included in the ban. So, there are questions about this that leave a lot of experts perplexed,” Thomas said.

Turkey’s foreign ministry said on Thursday that talks were underway to try to persuade the US and Britain to exclude Turkish Airlines and Istanbul airport from the ban s.

Proteas reach 123/4 vs New Zealand on rain-marred opening day

March 25, 2017 by Nasheman

hashim-amla

Hamilton: Former skipper Hashim Amla’s 32nd half century helped South Africa reach 123/4 against New Zealand on an intriguing opening day of the third and final Test, cut short because of rain at the Seddon Park here on Saturday.

Skipper Faf du Plessis was batting on 33 with Temba Bavuma on 13 for company when the umpires removed the bails for the day. Only 41 overs were possible with nearly three hours of play lost on the first day of the deciding Test because of the weather.

The duo’s unbroken 26-run stand came after Amla’s valuable half-century. His 50 off 93 balls included nine boundaries and helped the visiting side recover from 5/2, according to an International Cricket Council (ICC) report.

Du Plessis won the toss for the eighth consecutive time in New Zealand, but the home side had the early success as both openers fell in the first four overs.

Theunis de Bruyn had a debut to forget, falling for a duck when he edged his third ball, from Matt Henry, to Tom Latham at second slip.

Dean Elgar was bowled when he shouldered arms to a Colin de Grandhomme delivery that came back from outside the off stump.

Jean Paul Duminy and Amla offered a period of stability before Henry had Duminy caught on the boundary for 20 just before lunch. De Grandhomme bowled Amla seven overs after the resumption.

Rain brought an early end to the middle session 14.2 overs after lunch, and no further play was possible despite the efforts of the ground staff.

Henry finished the day with 2/25 and de Grandhomme 2/43.

South Africa leads the series 1-0 and wants a win in Hamilton to move up to second on the ICC Test team rankings. However, the weather could have the final say on the outcome.

Will raise hand wherever needed, says Shiv Sena, targets airline

March 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Ravindra Gaikwad

Mumbai: In a shocking statement, Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut on Friday evening said party leaders would “raise their hand” wherever needed.

Raut’s statement came as Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikward had to travel by train on Friday after domestic airlines unitedly “banned” him from flying on their aircraft for assaulting an Air India officer.

Raut, however, tried hard not to court controversy and added that Shiv Sena does not support Gaikwad’s behaviour.

When asked about the party’s stand on Gaikwad hitting an Air India employee with a slipper on Thursday, Raut told a press conference: “The Shiv Sena can never support Ravindra Gaikwad’s behaviour. But there should be an inquiry to find out why our MP was forced to behave this way.”

“Hitting anybody can never be the culture of the Sena, but we will surely raise our hand wherever required,” Raut added.

Hitting out at Air India for blacklisting “unruly” Gaikwad, Raut said the AI “needs to introspect” and should mull “what would happen if the public decides to blacklist the airline”.

It is not about a single MP but thousands of passengers who have to face numerous troubles due to Air India’s poor service, he said.

“It would have been better had Air India been as quick in improving its service as it was in banning our MP from flying on its aircraft. Passengers are fleeced at airports like Mumbai and Delhi. What happens to their (AI’s) quick decision-making then?” he asked.

Before the party takes any action against Gaikwad, the MP will have to face action as per the law, Raut said.

After being barred by airlines for assaulting an Air India employee, Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad had to take a train to Mumbai on Friday where he has been summoned by his part chief Uddhav Thackeray.

The grounded Member of Parliament boarded the first class coach of August Kranti Express from Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station to Mumbai Central at around 5 pm on Friday, a railway official said.

Lok Sabha member from Osmanabad in Maharashtra, Gaikwad assaulted Air India officer R Sukumar on board an aircraft on Thursday.

In an unprecedented step, Air India and all private carriers refused to fly Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad over his misconduct with the officer of the national flag carrier.

But the Sena MP remained defiant and refused to apologise for repeatedly beating and trying to push down Sukumar from the aircraft. He also dared the Delhi Police to arrest him and alleged that it was Sukumar who hit him first.

“Air India and member airlines have decided to ban this MP from flying on all our flights with immediate effect,” the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) said in a statement yesterday.

“We believe that exemplary action should be taken in such incidents to protect employee morale and public safety,” said FIA associate director Ujjwal Dey.

The Indian Commercial Pilots Association sought an unconditional apology from Gaikwad and threatened to direct its members “not to operate any flight which has Gaikwad on board”.

The Sena leader earlier vowed to fly back to Pune, but Air India cancelled his ticket.

After beating Air India staffer, Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad watched Bollywood movie to `relax` himself

Besides Air India, the airlines which won’t allow Gaikwad to fly as FIA members are IndiGo, Jet Airways, SpiceJet and Go Air. AirAsia and Vistara, which are not with FIA, have also joined them.

Gaikwad on Thursday beat Sukumar repeatedly with a slipper after he was forced to travel in Economy Class from Pune to Delhi despite holding a Business Class ticket.

New Delhi: The UK has conveyed to India that its request for extradition of industrialist Vijay Mallya, who has been declared a proclaimed offender, has been certified by the secretary of state.

“The UK Home department on February 21 conveyed that the request of India for extradition of Mallya has been certified by the secretary of state and sent to the Westminster Magistrates’ Court for a district judge to consider the issue of releasing of warrant,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.

The development is a step forward towards securing the extradition of the fugitive businessman wanted in India for loan default of over Rs 9,000 crore.

Baglay also noted that a formal extradition request in respect of Mallya as per Extradition Treaty between India and the UK was handed over to the British High Commission here through a note verbale on February 8.

While handing over the request, India had asserted that it has a “legitimate” case against Mallya and maintained that if an extradition request is honoured, it would show British “sensitivity towards our concerns”.

Earlier in January this year, a CBI court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Mallya in the Rs 720-crore IDBI Bank loan default case.

Mallya, whose now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines owes more than Rs 9,000 crore to various banks, had fled India on March 2, 2016.

Hosni Mubarak walks free after six years in jail

Egypt’s ousted president Hosni Mubarak left a military hospital on Friday where he had spent much of his six-year detention, his lawyer said.

Mubarak had been cleared for release earlier this month after a top court finally acquitted him of involvement in protester deaths during the 2011 revolt that ousted him.

“Yes,” his lawyer Farid al-Deeb told AFP news agency when asked if Mubarak had left the hospital on Friday.

Mubarak was accused of inciting the deaths of protesters during the 18-day revolt, in which about 850 people were killed as police clashed with demonstrators.

He was sentenced to life in 2012 in the case, but an appeals court ordered a retrial which dismissed the charges two years later.

Egypt’s top appeals court on March 2 acquitted him of involvement in the killings.

In January 2016, the appeals court upheld a three-year prison sentence for Mubarak and his two sons on corruption charges.

But the sentence took into account time served. Both of his sons, Alaa and Gamal, were freed.

On Thursday, a court ordered a renewed corruption investigation into Mubarak for allegedly receiving gifts from the state owned Al-Ahram newspaper.

Meanwhile several key activists in the 2011 uprising are now serving lengthy jail terms, and rights groups say hundreds of others have been forcibly disappeared.

“As Hosni Mubarak goes free in Egypt, thousands of prisoners still languish in horrific prison conditions. Many face the death penalty on charges relating to protests, in mass trials that make a mockery of due process,” said Harriet McCulloch, a deputy director at human rights organisation Reprieve.

Since President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi came to power after the 2013 ouster of democratically-elected Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood – Mubarak’s successor, Egyptian authorities have cracked down on freedom of expression.

“Some were arrested as children – people like Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa, who has suffered terrible abuses in jail. The Sisi Government must now show that Egypt’s justice system is worthy of the name and release Ibrahim, and the hundreds like him,” said McCulloch.

child

Thiruvananthapuram: A 14-year-old boy from Kerala has become a father, after begetting a child with a woman four years older than him, in Kochi, about 200 kms from here.

Paternity tests conducted on the eighth standard student has confirmed that he is the father of a two-month-old baby girl, police said today.

The 18-year-old girl, is the boy’s first cousin and were neighbours.

The girl had alleged that she had been raped by the boy following which a case has been registered against him, they said.

However, when questioned, the boy had blamed the girl for the relationship and hence a case has been registered against the young mother, under section 7 (Sexual Assault) and 8 (not less than 3 years which may extend to 5 years and fine) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, police said.

“We produced the statements in court and on receiving proper legal directions we registered cases,” Kalamassery Circle Inspector, S Jayakrishnan, who is the investigating officer, told PTI.

The boy, who was studying in a local school in Kochi, has been shifted to another place.
According to State Crime Records Bureau, 1570 crimes were registered against children in Kerala, including 520 rape cases last year till July.

Besides, 1,156 cases were registered last year under POCSO Act with Malappuram recording highest number of cases 138, Thiruvananthapuram Rural 111, Ernakulam Rural 96, and Kannur 86.

In 2015, 1569 cases were registered under POCSO Act.
