Won’t apologize for assaulting Air India staffer, says Shiv Sena MP

March 24, 2017 by Nasheman

Ravindra Gaikwad

New Delhi: An unrepentant Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad today said that he would not apologise to the Air India staffer whom he assaulted, and instead blamed the airline employee for the incident. The MP drew more flak today, with four private Indian carriers banning him from flying, while Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathy Raju promised that action would be taken against him.

Gaikwad told reporters at the Maharashtra Sadan here this morning that he has no regret over his actions, saying “kaahe ka pashchaataap (what is there to repent)?” “I will not apologise…he (AI Manager Sukumar) should come and apologise… then we will see. A 60-year-old man should also know how to behave,” he said.

Gaikwad said he went out to watch a Bollywood movie — ‘Badrinath ki Dulhaniya’ — last night to “relax” himself after journalists sought his reaction over the incident. “Tension-free hona chahiye na…you also watch the movie…it’s very good,” he said. The first-time lawmaker also said he had made the Parliament “proud”, when asked if his act has brought shame to the temple of democracy.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said she cannot take suo motu action and that she will take a call if it is brought to her notice in the House. “I always say every human being should behave in a nice manner with everyone…whosoever it is, your behaviour should be good with everyone. As a mother I would suggest that to everyone. I will understand everything and then I will comment,” she told reporters before entering the house.

Gaikwad also said that he has had no conversation with his party chief Uddhav Thackeray since the incident and added that he has written to the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Civil Aviation Minister regarding the incident. Yesterday Gaikwad had repeatedly hit a 60-year-old Air India officer with sandal over being unable to travel business class despite having insisted on boarding an all-economy flight. The national carrier has filed two FIRs against the MP, while the Shiv Sena has sought an explanation from him.

“Police can arrest me…my party, Uddhav saheb will take care of it,” he said. Raju said the incident “should never have happened”. “It was an unfortunate incident. It should never have happened. What has to happen (now), will happen. I am not saying no action has to be taken. Action has to be taken and we will do it. That is not the problem at all. “I am also an MP. We are not above the law and we have to follow the law of the land,” he told reporters outside the House.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Manish Tewari said the Sena MP should be expelled from the House for his “outrageous” and “brazen” act of “cowardice”. “He (Gaikwad) should be expelled from the House. It has the inherent power to do so. It doesn’t require anyone to complain…it should take suo motu cognisance,” he said.

Meanhwile, the Federation of Indian Airlines, which has Jet Airways, IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir as members, has taken a “strong view of the incident and accordingly taken a decision to bar Gaikwad from flying”, an FIA source said. The FIA will not allow the Sena MP to fly on its member carriers, the source said.

Deadly air raid hits refugee shelter near Raqqa: SOHR

March 22, 2017 by Nasheman

Activists say a suspected US-led coalition air raid struck a school sheltering displaced people near ISIL-held Raqqa.

by Al Jazeera

Dozens of people were killed earlier this week in a suspected US-led coalition air raid that hit a school sheltering displaced people near Raqqa, ISIL’s self-declared capital in Syria, according to a monitoring group.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Wednesday that its activists had counted at least 33 bodies at the site near the village of al-Mansoura, west of Raqqa.

The group, which monitors Syria’s war via a network of contacts on the ground, said it believed the air raid at the school-turned-shelter had been carried out by the US-led coalition fighting ISIL, which stands for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, and is also known as ISIS.

The air raid took place on Monday night, SOHR head Rami Abdulrahman told the Reuters news agency.

The attack was also reported by the activist-run Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently group, which said dozens of civilians were dead or still missing after the air raid.

The US-led coalition has escalated its aerial campaign against ISIL around Raqqa this month, causing numerous civilian casualties.

Earlier this month, the coalition said its raids in Syria and Iraq had unintentionally killed at least 220 civilians since 2014. But critics say the number is far higher.

Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Beirut, said the school in al-Mansoura housed many refugees who had fled the fighting in Raqqa.

“This is an area where the US-led coalition has been launching air strikes to break the defence lines of ISIL in Raqqa,” he said.

“Some say that more than 30 people were killed in the strikes, other suggest that this number could be even higher.”

A spokesman for the US-led coalition has previously said that it does everything it can to avoid civilian casualties and that it investigates those that are reported as a result of its air raids.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led group of militias backed by the US-led coalition, is fighting to isolate Raqqa ahead of an anticipated assault on the city, which the ISIL group has used as a command node to plan attacks abroad.

The head of the YPG militia, the strongest in the SDF, said last week that the offensive to retake Raqqa would begin in early April but a spokesman for the US Pentagon said no decision had yet been made.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and millions more displaced since Syria’s conflict erupted in March 2011 with protests against President Bashar al-Assad.

The conflict has since escalated into a multi-front war that has facilitated the rise of armed groups and drawn in international powers, including the US.

March 22, 2017 by Nasheman

Bachendri Pal

New Delhi: Bachendri Pal, India’s first woman to climb Mount Everest, is leading a women’s expedition to the mountain’s base camp at a height of 17,500 feet, Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) announced here on Tuesday.

The team of six women will trek to Gokyo Everest base camp via the Jiri route in Nepal in about 20 days.

The journey will cover the Gokyo ridge touching 17,500 feet and two mountain passes, including Lobuche Base. Thereafter, they will arrive at the Everest base camp,” a statement by TSAF, headed by Pal, said.

Two other mountaineers — Hemant Gupta and Payo Murmu — will continue their journey to the Everest peak — highest in the world at 29,029 feet — after reaching the base camp where the women contingent will conclude their campaign.

Gupta, an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay and employee of Tata Steel, aborted his earlier attempt at reaching the highest peak in 2015 when Nepal earthquake wreaked havoc in the region.

Murmu had successfully completed the ‘Snowman Trek’ in Bhutan in 2011 and also climbed Bhagirathi ll (21,400 ft) in 2014.

The expedition will commence on March 26.

Hathras (UP): Three shops selling meat and fish were set afire by unidentified persons here, triggering panic in the area, police said Wednesday.

The incident comes close on the heels of some slaughter houses being sealed in Uttar Pradesh after the BJP government led by Yogi Adityanath was sworn in.

Police said the arson incident took place in Manyawar Kanshiram Colony last night. The shop owners said all their stock was charred in the fire.

Superintendent of Police, Hathras, Dilip Kumar Srivastava, said, “Unidentified persons set ablaze three shops selling fish and meat. An FIR has been registered against them.”

Sub-divisional magistrate (Hathras Sadar) Rakesh Gupta later met the aggrieved shop owners and heard their grievances.

The BJP had announced in its manifesto that it would take “stern steps to close down all illegal slaughterhouses besides banning mechanised slaughterhouses” if it comes to power.

Yesterday, a slaughterhouse, which was allegedly being run illegally, was sealed by the district authorities in Kamalgadaha locality.

Officials claimed, that the slaughterhouse had been shutdown in 2012, but it continued to operate in a clandestine manner.

The Ghaziabad Police had yesterday sealed 10 meat shops and four slaughter houses which were allegedly running illegally in the city.

Plans afoot to eliminate me, says Narada chief Mathew Samuel

March 22, 2017 by Nasheman

Mathew Samuel

New Delhi: Narada News chief Mathew Samuel who conducted a sting operation purportedly showing Trinamool Congress leaders accepting bribes, on Wednesday approached the police claiming threats to himself and his family.

Samuel, who is currently in Kerala, filed the complaint with the state police, while his family filed a complaint with the Delhi Police as they are in the national capital.

In both complaints, Samuel and family have claimed that they were being “stalked” and “followed” since afer the Calcutta High Court on March 17 ordered the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the 2016 sting operation.

“Ever since the high court’s order came, I, my family and my staff are regularly being stalked by unknown men,” Samuel told IANS over phone.

“I am the prime witness in the Narada sting operation. The Kolkata Police have already tried to harass me by registering a false case against me. And now these threats. There appears to be a plan to eliminate me, the prime witness,” Samuel said.

Asked whom he suspected, Samuel said: “Who else could it be? My life is a threat only to those against whom I conducted the sting.”

Earlier on Tuesday, the Supreme Court rejected the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government’s appeal and declined to interfere with the high court order.

The controversy erupted in March 2016 when Narada News portal uploaded a series of videos purportedly showing a number of high-profile Trinamool Congress leaders, including former and present ministers, members of Parliament and state lawmakers, receiving money in exchange of favours to a fictitious company.

The Narada News footage became a big issue during the 2016 West Bengal assembly polls, but the Trinamool Congress managed to retain power despite a vigorous anti-corruption campaign by the opposition.

March 22, 2017 by Nasheman

Aadhaar

New Delhi: The government has proposed to make Aadhaar card mandatory for filing income tax return and also for applying for PAN from July 1, 2017.

Sources in the government said the work on both fronts was moving steadily and relevant amendments to the Income Tax Act, 1961, in this Budget are under ‘active discussion’ to ensure mandatory linkage of tax returns to Aadhaar numbers.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has introduced a new column in the ITRs for 2015-16 where an e-filer can provide his Aadhaar number which will have to be authenticated on the official website of the department via a One Time Password (OTP).

Adityanath orders closure of all slaughter houses in UP, bans cow smuggling

March 22, 2017 by Nasheman

Yogi Adityanath

Lucknow: In keeping with the BJP’s manifesto, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today directed police officials to prepare an action plan for closure of slaughter houses across the state. He also ordered a blanket ban on smuggling of cows and said zero tolerance would be exercised in this regard.

Official sources did not specify the type of slaughter houses which will be shut. However, the BJP manifesto had said that all the illegal slaughter houses would be closed and there would be a blanket ban on all the mechanised slaughter houses. The BJP document had observed that due to cow smuggling, dairy-based industries have failed to flourish.

It noted that during the past state governments there has been a fall in cattle count, reflecting that bovine smuggling was rampant. BJP Chief Amit Shah in his election meetings had emphasised that the moment his party comes to power in the state, it would ban all slaughter houses. In his orders issued today, Adityanath also directed the police to act tough against anti-social elements. He warned that those using police security as “status symbol” would come under the scanner and after review of their threat perception their security might be changed.
