Trivendra Singh Rawat sworn in as Uttarakhand CM

Dehradun: BJP leader Trivendra Singh Rawat was today sworn in as Uttarakhand Chief Minister.

Governor K K Paul administered the oath of office and secrecy to 56-year-old Rawat, a former RSS pracharak, and nine ministers at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah and other national and state party leaders.

Satpal Maharaj, Harak Singh Rawat, Madan Kaushik, Arvind Pandey, Subodh Uniyal, Yashpal Arya and Prakash Pant have been made Cabinet ministers.

Rekha Arya and Dhan Singh Rawat took oath as ministers of state.

The BJP decimated the Congress in the Assembly election, winning 57 of the 70 seats.

Coupled with his administrative and organisational skills and experience, Rawat’s loyalty to the party and RSS ideology catapulted him to the top post in the state.

Rawat was appointed the party’s national secretary in 2013. He was later made co-incharge of the party’s affairs in Uttar Pradesh in 2014. He was BJP in-charge of Jharkhand ahead of the crucial assembly election, a responsibility he discharged well to further strengthen the party leadership’s trust in him.

He had wrested the Doiwala seat from Congress with an impressive margin of 24,869 votes to win it for the third time.

2 missing Indian clerics in custody of Pak’s intelligence agency

Lahore: The two missing Indian clerics of Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah are in custody of Pakistan’s intelligence agency over their alleged links with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), official sources said today.

Syed Asif Nizami and his nephew Nazim Nizami were offloaded from Karachi-bound Shaheen Airlines on March 14 at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore, they said.

“The personnel of an intelligence took both the clerics into custody after getting them offloaded and shifted them to an undisclosed location for investigation,” the sources told PTI on condition of anonymity.

They further said both clerics have been detained for their alleged link with MQM of Altaf Hussain.

“They are being interrogated for their alleged links with Altaf’s partymen in Karachi,” the sources said, adding they will be freed if nothing is established against them.

The MQM emerged as a largely ethnic party in the 1980s. It has political dominance in the southern Sindh province’s urban areas – notably in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Sukkur where a large number of Urdu-speaking people who fled to Pakistan from India during 1947’s partition reside.

80-year-old Asif Nizami is the head priest of Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia Dargah. He along with his nephew Nazim Ali Nizami had gone to Pakistan on March 8 to see his sister in Karachi. They arrived in Lahore on March 13 and visited shrine of sufi saint Baba Farid Gang in Pakpattan. The two went missing on March 14 from Lahore.

Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria yesterday said Pakistan was “pro-actively pursuing” and have asked all departments concerned to look into the matter.

He had told PTI in Islamabad that, “no clue to the missing Indian priests has been found so far”.

India has taken up this matter with Pakistan and ensure the safe recovery of Indian nationals. Official sources in New Delhi said Pakistan has conveyed that it was “seriously pursuing” the case with its law enforcement agencies.

“We have taken up this matter with Government of Pakistan and requested them for an update on both the Indian nationals in Pakistan. Both are missing after they landed in Karachi airport,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had tweeted.

“We have also contacted their host in Karachi who appears to be under pressure not to speak to the Indian High Commission. I am in constant touch with our High Commission. However, there is no official confirmation regarding their whereabouts,” she said.

Pakistan has launched a crackdown on the MQM after party leader Hussain made anti-Pakistan comments during speeches at a hunger strike camp in Karachi last year.

Pakistan has charged the self-exiled leader in London with treason for his inflammatory speech that incited party workers to attack media outlets.

Israel carries out air strikes inside Syria

The Israeli army says its aircraft have carried out several strikes inside Syria overnight, prompting Syrian forces to retaliate with ground-to-air missiles, one of which was intercepted.

It was one of the most serious incidents between the two countries, which remain technically at war, since civil war broke out in Syria in March 2011.

In response of Thursday night’s attack, the Syrian government deployed air defence systems and fired a number of missiles towards Israeli jets, Israeli daily Haaretz reported.

None of the missiles struck the jets, the army said, though one of the projectiles was intercepted by Israel’s Arrow missile defence system north of Jerusalem, according to Haaretz.

“Overnight … aircraft targeted several targets in Syria,” an Israeli army statement said.

“Several anti-aircraft missiles were launched from Syria following the mission and [army] aerial defence systems intercepted one of the missiles.”

Rocket sirens sounded in Israeli settlements in the Jordan valley, the military said and two witnesses heard an explosion a few minutes later, Reuters news agency reported.

Unidentified object

Syria’s army high command confirmed in a statement on Friday that Israeli jets breached Syrian airspace early in the morning and attacked a military target near Palmyra.

The high command described the attack as an act of aggression that aided the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, which is fighting against the Syrian government.

It said its air defences shot down one of four Israeli jets over what it called “occupied ground” and damaged another.

There were no reports by the Israeli army of any aircraft lost in the operation.

Jordanian new media said an “unidentified object” fell from the skies on Thursday night in the northern area of Irbid, after which security forces surrounded the area of impact.

Pictures shared on social media showed what appeared to be part of a missile that had landed in a yard.

It was not clear whether the object was part of of missile intercepted by Israel, part of an Israeli missile, or another object.

Arms convoys targeted

Both Israeli and other news media have reported Israeli air strikes inside Syria targeting arms convoys of Lebanese group Hezbollah, which fought a 2006 war with Israel and is now fighting alongside the Syrian government.

But normally Israel makes no official comment.

The missile fire prompted air raid sirens to go off in the Jordan Valley during the night, the Israeli army said.

Arunachal student case: Rijiju urges Karnataka Govt to initiate strong action

New Delhi/Bengaluru: Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Friday said that he has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka Government to take strong action in Arunachal Pradesh student’s case where the lad from the north-eastern state was allegedly assaulted by his landlord and later forced to lick his shoes for using excessive water.

Rijiju said that the Bengaluru Police is taking steps to reach out the people from north-east and added that the Home Ministry has been issuing advisories to the state governments for ensuring safety of the north-eastern people.

“Bengaluru Police is taking steps to reach out to North-East people. I’ve urged the Karnataka Government for strong action in Arunachal student’s case,” said Rijiju.

“The Home Ministry has been issuing advisories to the state governments for safety and stringent actions if there’s any attack on North-East people,” he added.

Higio Gungtey, 22, was allegedly assaulted by his landlord Hemanth Kumar on March 6 after an argument over the usage of water.

According to reports, the other tenants in Kumar’s building complained of water shortage due to excessive use of water by the victim.

Reportedly, the owner was drunk when the incident occurred.

India 20-0 at tea in reply to Australia’s 451

Ranchi: In reply to Australia’s 451, India were 20-0 in their first innings at tea on the second day of the third cricket Test here Friday.

Indian openers Lokesh Rahul (18) and Murali Vijay (2) were at the crease during the break.

Australia were all out for 451 in 137.3 overs.

Man claims to be Jayalalithaa’s son, Madras HC threatens to send him to jail

Chennai: The Madras High Court on Friday reprimanded a man, who claimed to be the “secret son” of former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa, questioning the genuineness of documents submitted by him.

“I can send this man straightaway to jail. I will ask police officers to take him to jail now itself,” Justice R Mahadevan said.

The judge directed him to appear before the Commissioner of Police tomorrow itself and handover original documents for verification.

The man, J Krishnamoorthy, had moved the court, saying he was born to Jayalalithaa and late Telugu actor Shoban Babu.

He submitted some documents, including a deed of adoption. He also sought the court’s help to declare him as her son and hence entitled to her properties, including the Poes Garden residence.

The petitioner also sought a direction to the Director General of Police to provide him security, as he feared threats from the family of Jayalalithaa’s aide and AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala.

The petition had been filed in the High Court Registry a week ago and it came up today for maintainability.

The judge said the petitioner had “fabricated” the documents.

“… Even if the documents are placed before an LKG student, he will say that they are fabricated documents. You attached a photo available in public domain. Do you think anyone can just walk in and initiate PIL proceedings?,” the judge said.

“Don’t play with the court,” the judge said before directing additional public prosecutor Emilias to ascertain the genuineness of the documents.

The documents should be placed before the commissioner of police. “Let the commissioner verify the genuineness of the documents.”

The petitioner had claimed that he was born in 1985 and that a year later he was given in adoption to the family of

Erode-based Vasanthamani, who allegedly worked in former chief minister M G Ramachandran’s household in the late 1980s.

According to the petitioner, the ‘adoption deed’ which had photographs and signatures of Jayalalithaa, Shoban Babu and Vasanthamani on the rear, had the signature of M G Ramachandran as ‘witnesses’ to adoption.

Referring to this, the judge said the late chief minister M G Ramachandran was not able to move even his hand around the time the document was allegedly prepared.

“But the document shows that he has signed,” the judge said.

“This man (petitioner) has fabricated the document…,” the judge said.

The judge asked Social Activist ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy who accompanied the petitioner if he had seen the documents.

“What is your role here. You have done marvellous service to the society through this court. I can send this man straightaway to jail…. Are you satisfied with the document?,” the judge asked.

Digvijay Singh blames Congress leaders for Goa fiasco

Panaji: Facing flak for his handling of the Goa polls, AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh today said his proposal for a pre-poll alliance with Goa Forward was “sabotaged” by his own party leaders.

He said had the alliance with Goa Forward gone through, the Congress would have got majority in the state and that it was unfair to now make him a “villain”. “As a strategy I had proposed a secular alliance with regional party headed by Babush Monserratte and Goa Forward headed by Vijai Sardesai,” Singh said in a series of tweets.

“Our alliance with Babush went through and we won 3 out of 5 but our alliance with Goa Forward was sabotaged by our own leaders. Sad!” he said. The Congress had supported Atanasio (Babush) Monserratte’s United Goan party in Panaji constituency and given tickets to four of his supporters.

“Goa Forward won 3 out of 4 (seats) they contested. Had our alliance with Goa Forward gone through we would have been 22,” he said in another tweet. “Still Digvijaya guilty? I leave it to you to judge,” the senior Congress leader said. He said that while the Congress is being blamed for deciding late on its legislative party leader in Goa, the BJP is yet to decide its leader in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

“Congress was blamed for being late in deciding its Leader. BJP yet to decide leader in UP and Uttarakhand. Results came on 11th evening,” Digvijaya said. He said the Congress Legislative Party leader for Punjab was decided on March 13 and for Manipur and Goa on March 12.

“In Manipur there was a sitting Chief Minister in Goa 4 Ex CM got elected as MLAs but we chose the leader on 12th,” Singh said defending himself. “Letter to Governor goes after the leader is chosen, which we did but the Governor took the decision before that,” he said. Singh said that when took over as incharge of the party in Goa, the organisation was in a “disarray.”

“When I and Chella Kumar (AICC Secretary) took charge of Goa in 2013 out of 9 Congress MLAs only six were active (and) the whole organisation was in a disarray,” he said. “Even Congress Leaders were predicting 2-4 seats (in Goa polls) for Congress,” he said in another tweet.

Singh said it was unfair to make him a “villain” in the present situation. Without taking any name, he said, “A senior Hindi TV Journalist who has a flat in Goa and who was very active for Congress in 2012 election predicted a clean sweep for AAP.” “And that too as late as January 2017. AAP reduced to zero, BJP came down from 22 to 13 and yet Digvijaya is a villain! Unfair!” he said.

“It’s good to have a solo show in a metro city and art has a good market in Bengaluru. My inspiration is the surrounding I live in and experience it with nature and the universe. Though I even admire the paintings of Razaji (S H Raza),” she adds.

Krupa’s artwork so far has found several admirers including megastar Amitabh Bachan, Shekhar Suman, Kunal Kohli, and Chief Minister Mr Devendra Fadnavis and several other corporate company directors, art collectors, politicians, etc.

Krupa has been planning for future shows in Mumbai, Dubai and London soon.

Sublime Smith takes Australia to 194/4 at tea

Ranchi: Captain Steven Smith struck a plucky half century to guide Australia to 194 for four at tea on day one of third Test against India here Thursday.

Smith (80*) was in the middle alongside comeback man Glenn Maxwell (19*) in a session where Australia scored 85 runs in 30 overs at the loss of Peter Handscomb (19).

It was a less productive session for the hosts, who had taken three crucial wickets in the first two hours of play, reducing the visitors to 109 for three.

Ajinkya Rahane was the stand-in captain in the middle as Virat Kohli missed majority of the second session after hurting his shoulder with an awkward dive in the morning.

Trying to save a boundary at deep midwicket in the 40th over, Kohli landed heavily on the fast and hard outfield of the Jharkhand State Cricket Association International Stadium Complex.

Such was the impact that he had difficulty in standing up and was seen grimacing in pain, clutching his right shoulder to be rushed out of the field immediately.

However, it was a memorable outing for rival skipper Smith, who became the third fastest batsman in terms of matches played to complete 5000 Test runs in his 53rd Test.

Sir Don Bradman had reached the milestone in his 36th Test, while Sunil Gavaskar took 52 matches to get past 5000.

Smith went about his job as usual on way to his 21st half-century and shared undefeated 54-run partnership with Maxwell.

Umesh looked the most impressive Indian bowler and gave the the only breakthrough of the session when he trapped Handscomb LBW with a brilliant inswinging yorker.

After Handscomb’s departure, Smith found a fine ally in Maxwell.

Earlier, Smith won a fine toss as their openers Matt Renshaw and David Warner played with a positive intent and cruised to 50 for no loss in 9.3 overs.

But after spin was introduced at both ends in the 10th over, Ravindra Jadeja (1/49) struck in his first over with Warner (19) offering a simple return catch to the left-arm spinner.

Renshaw’s first 24 runs came only in boundaries as once he cleared a fielder the ball would race past the rope.

Seventh over and Ashwin came in with his ‘bunny’ Warner at the opposite end.

At the other end, Warner took his time and hit his first boundary after 22 balls with an elegant cover drive off Yadav.

With Warner looking to break free, Kohli employed spin attack at both ends and Jadeja was welcomed by the Aussie vice-captain with another crunching drive.

The next ball, a juicy full-toss and Warner offered Jadeja a return catch for the first breakthrough for India.

Adani asked to abandon coal mine project in Australia

Melbourne: Cricket legends Ian and Greg Chappell are among 90 prominent Australians who have signed an open letter calling on Indian energy giant Adani to abandon its controversial coal mine projectin Queensland, warning it could damage bilateral ties and even affect sporting links.

The 21.7 billion dollar Carmichael coal mine project, one of the world’s largest, to start construction this year after being given the green light by the federal and Queensland state governments.

The project involves dredging 1.1 million cubic metres of spoil near the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which will then be disposed off on land.

The letter addressed to Gautam Adani, the company’s founder and chairman, cites public opposition, risks to miners’ health, climate change and potential impact on the Great Barrier Reef as reasons not to proceed.

“Cricket has a bit to do with the feeling between India and Australia,” said Ian Chappell.

“The thought that this [mine] could affect the relationship, hopefully that’ll get through.”

The letter calls on Adani to invest in renewables instead, and concludes that it would be a “great shame” were the mine to “damage the image of India in Australia”.

Besides the former Australian Test cricket captains, authors Richard Flanagan and Tim Winton, Telstra chair John Mullen and investment banker Mark Burrows have also signed the letter.

The letter is expected to be delivered to Adani’s Gujarat headquarters by an Australian community delegation currently visiting India.

The letter said,”We are writing to respectfully ask you to abandon the Adani Group’s proposal in Queensland’s Galilee Basin…Pollution from burning coal was the single biggest driver of global warming, threatening life in Australia, India and all over the world.”

“Last month The Lancet, one of the world’s leading medical journals, published a report that described your company’s Carmichael mine proposal as a public health disaster…this mine proposal does not have wide public support in Australia and does not have the support of the Traditional Owners of the land where the mine would be dug.

“There are concerns about the impact the mine will have on groundwater resources and on nearby farmers who rely on this water for their livelihoods,” it noted.

“We urge you to think about global warming and public health and listen to the wishes of the people. It would be a great shame if this one project were to damage the image of India in Australia. We understand the Adani Group has not made a final investment decision on the Carmichael coal mine. We strongly urge you to decide to abandon this project.

“We the undersigned – and we believe all Australians – would support and welcome moves by your company to invest further in renewable energy in Australia,” the open letter said.
