Fuel outlets in 8 states including Karnataka to be shut on Sundays from May 14

April 19, 2017 by Nasheman

petrol-price

Bengaluru: Beginning May 14, fuel outlets in eight states will be shut every Sunday following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to conserve oil, a fuel pump owners’ body said here on Tuesday.

“We had planned to shut our outlets on Sundays a few years back. But oil marketing companies had then requested us to reconsider our decision. Now we have decided to shut the outlets on Sundays,” said Suresh Kumar, an executive committee member of the consortium of Indian petroleum dealers.

He said the association’s decision was made in view of the Prime Minister’s call during his recent ‘Mann ki baat’ programme to conserve oil to save the environment. Kumar, also the vice-president of Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association, said nearly 20,000 outlets in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Haryana would be shut for 24 hours on Sundays, starting May 14.

“In Tamil Nadu, we expect a business loss of Rs 150 crore if we do not operate on a Sunday. But we have been seeing a decline in sales on Sundays by upto 40 per cent,” he said. Asked if the association’s decision was supported by the OMCs, he said, “We will communicate our decision to them shortly.”

Kumar said the fuel outlets which normally have about 15 staff each would have one staff member on the holidays to provide fuel if there was an emergency situation. On the issue of OMCs hiking the margins+ to petroleum outlets, he said the association was discussing it and would soon make an announcement in this regard. “That struggle is going on. We are meeting our association members shortly. We will announce our decision soon,” he said.

Lalu Prasad accuses PM of ‘crafting’ Advani trial

April 19, 2017 by Nasheman

lalu prasad yadav

Patna: RJD chief Lalu Prasad today alleged that the Supreme Court order allowing trial of top BJP leaders in the Babri Masjid case was a “well-thought-out politics” of the Prime Minister to remove L K Advani’s name from the Presidential race.

“The CBI is under the influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It stood in the Supreme Court and sought permission to run trial against Advani and others in the Babri Masjid demolition case,” Prasad alleged.

“Since Advani’s name was in circulation as a probable for the post of President, Modi through well-thought-out politics struck out his (Advani’s) name,” he alleged.

“It is well known that the CBI does what the government desires,” the RJD chief claimed.

Prasad was reacting to the apex court order today allowing the CBI plea and restoring criminal conspiracy charges against Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti.

“The BJP makes no difference between itself and others while playing dangerous politics against anyone considered opposed to Modi,” he claimed.

Speaking to reporters, Prasad also demanded a probe into “why BJP veteran A B Vajpayee had become physically incapacitated?”

The RJD chief also sought to turn the tables on the BJP, claiming if Union Minister Rajnath Singh and other NDA leaders did not attend Monday’s programme in Patna to honour freedom fighters due to the presence of ‘convict’ Lalu Prasad, “then how could they make Kalyan Singh a Governor?”

The apex court in its order had today noted that Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh enjoys Constitutional immunity and can be tried only after he ceases to hold the office.

Singh was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1992.

“On one hand, they garland Gandhiji’s statue, on the other they salute his killer Nathuram Godse,” he claimed.

Babri case: Setback for Advani, Joshi’s presidential ambitions

April 19, 2017 by Nasheman

L K Advani Murli Manohar Joshi

New Delhi: The Supreme Court’s order reviving the criminal conspiracy case against senior BJP leaders L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi is a major setback for them if they had nursed any hopes to be in the race for the post of the President.

The election for the presidential polls are due in June-July.

Though Prime Minister Narendra Modi has kept card close to his chest as to who would be the National Democratic alliance candidate, 89-year-old Advani and 83-year-old Joshi were seen as serious contenders for the presidential elections.

The Supreme Court has said Advani, Joshi, union minister Uma Bharti, among 13 others, will have to stand trial for criminal conspiracy to demolishing the Babri Masjid structure on December 6, 1992. The court has fixed two years for completion of the trial that is currently ongoing in Lucknow, and that the trial judge will not be transferred.

Hitherto, Advani and Joshi, along with Uma Bharti and Vinay Katiyar (BJP), Sadhvi Rithambra, and late Acharya Giriraj Kishore, Ashok Singhal and Vishnu Hari Dalmia (VHP) were facing trial for making speeches from the dais at Ramkatha Kunj prior to the razing of the 16th century structure in Ayodhya by mobs.

Until two days ago, Advani had given enough hints that his role in politics was far from over. In an interview to Lokmat, he had said it hurts him when his own party men declare him an old dodderer and advice him to retire.

Advani had said, “It does not at all go down well with me whenever someone says something like that about me.”

Advani even stressed that there is no correlation between age and the capacity to work. “Age is never a stumbling block if your mind is alert and you are eager to work.”

Advani, who was upset when BJP declared Modi as PM candidate in 2013, has always held that he was not in the race for any post.

But some Opposition leaders began to see new conspiracy. “The revival of the conspiracy charge against Advani is itself a conspiracy of Modi to remove the BJP veteran from the Presidential race,” Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad said.

“The CBI is in the hands of the PM, and the CBI today said in court that the case of conspiracy should take place against Advani in the Babri case. Advani was tipped to become President this time. The PM has clipped Advani’s chances of becoming the President. Anyone can understand that it is a political conspiracy of the Modi government to eliminate Advani from the race,” Lalu said in Patna.

Though the BJP leaders are backing Advani and Joshi against the revival of the conspiracy case, some see that the SC’s order might put pressure on them to quit their Lok Sabha membership to defend themselves.

However, senior BJP leader Uma Bharti said she won’t quit from the Modi cabinet or give up her Lok Sabha membership.

Politically, the revival of the criminal conspiracy case in Lucknow suits the BJP. It could help the Sangh Parivar outfits to again drum up support to for building the Ram temple in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The civil case on the dispute over the ownership of the land where Babri Masjid stood is before the Supreme Court after Allahabad High Court favoured a three-way split.

The High Court said Ram was born under the central dome of the makeshift temple and Hindus have the right to worship there. It ruled by a majority verdict that the disputed disputed site of 2.77 acres (120 feet by 90 feet plot) land be divided into three equal parts among the three petitioners — Sunni Wakf Board, Nirmohi Akhara and the party representing Ram Lalla.

Proud of Ram Mandir movement, ready to go to jail: Uma Bharti

April 19, 2017 by Nasheman

uma bharti

New Delhi: With Supreme Court ordering restoration of conspiracy charges against top BJP leaders in Ayodhya temple case, Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti on Wednesday said she will not resign and ready to face trial.

“I will not resign. Congress has no moral right to ask for my resignation”, she told in a hurriedly-called press conference here.

“I am unapologetic about being part of the Ayodhya movement. I am ready to sacrifice my life for the Ram Mandir.”

“I’m proud of Ram Mandir movement. There’s no conspiracy, I’ m ready to go to jail,” she said in her reaction to the Supreme Court order that revived the charges against her and other top BJP leaders L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Vinay Katiyar among others.

She also attacked Congress saying that it has no moral right to seek her resignation, they themselves were responsible for anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court allowed the CBI plea to restore criminal conspiracy charge against top BJP leaders in the Babri Masjid demolition case.

The court also clubbed the trial in the matter pending against the said leaders and ‘karsevaks’ and ordered day-to- day trial with the proceedings to be completed in a period of two years.

Sonu Nigam shaves off his head, insists that he is not anti-Muslim

April 19, 2017 by Nasheman

sonunigam

Mumbai: Sonu Nigam, who created a storm with his tweets on the use of loudspeakers in morning prayers at mosques, addressed the media at his house to clear his stand over the issue. The singer also invited celebrity hairstylist Aalim Hakim to cut his hair, in response to a West Bengal cleric’s fatwa offering Rs 10 lakhs to shave off Sonu’s head.

The ace singer started off by saying that he didn’t expect such a simple thing to become such a big topic of discussion. “I have considered Mohammed Rafi as my guru. My driver is a Muslim. I am not anti-Muslim, I consider myself secular,” he said on him being labelled as anti-Muslim.

Sonu urged that “we need to be considerate with each other”. He clarified that he’s talking on the issue under a social context, and not a religious context.

On being asked why he was shaving his head, Sonu said, “It’s not an agitation, not a challenge that I am throwing someone’s way. I am shaving my head just to show that the person cutting my hair is a Muslim. It’s all about interpreting things the right way. I exhort the media to present it like that and not in a confrontational way.”

When analogies were drawn with his concerts using loudspeakers, the singer rebuked by saying that he sings only within the permissible time limits. Sonu also stated that “being secular doesn’t mean we accept everything”. Congress leader Ahmed Patel echoed Sonu’s sentiments over the use of loudspeakers for Azaans in mosques. Sonu ended the interaction by quoting Ahmed Patel’s remarks, “Azaan zaruri hai, loudspeaker nahi”.

The singer then proceeded to have his head shaved at the hands of Aalim. Sonu emerged minutes later with a shaved head.

On Monday, Nigam blew up a controversy when he lashed out as “forced religiousness” in India after being woken up by the sound of the morning Aazaan from a mosque presumably near his home. “I don’t believe in any temple or gurudwara using electricity to wake up people who don’t follow the religion. Why then..? Honest? True? Gundagardi hai bus.”

He went on to tag Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to look into the matter.

“Dear Devendra Fadnavis please note and help us force police to act against illegal blaring of Azaan and other such activities,” he added.

He was trolled by Twitteratti and organizations with protests and some planning to move court against him.

Constable Tej Bahadur Yadav dismissed from BSF

April 19, 2017 by Nasheman

tej bahadur yadav

New Delhi: BSF on Wednesday dismissed Constable Tej Bahadur Yadav, whose video post on poor food being served to security personnel deployed on Line of Control (LoC) went viral, citing gross indiscipline.

The action against Yadav came after a Court of Inquiry (CoI) found Yadav guilty of violation of service rules by taking his grievances to public domain rather than raising it with his superior officers.

“BSF court has found him guilty on certain charges of indiscipline. He has been dismissed from service today, following provisions of BSF Act and rules. Individuals have options to appeal against the verdict in three months,” a senior BSF official said.

The Constable had earlier applied for voluntary retirement but the force had recalled the order it on the ground that a Court of Inquiry on his claims and disciplinary proceedings against him was pending. Yadav’s family had alleged that he was being “threatened and tortured mentally” and was under arrest.

The video posted on Facebook in early-January by Yadav detailing about the poor quality of food had went viral, prompting the Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to intervene.

Soon after the video went viral, the BSF had pointed fingers at Yadav, saying he was an “alcoholic” and court-martialled. The BSF also said that he was allowed to continue in service after the force thought about his family.

The BSF was of the view that there was no shortage of rations at any post and that security personnel deployed along the borders never complained about food. It also issued fresh guidelines for maintaining high quality of food for its personnel.

The force also directed its special snoop teams to check on the morale of the personnel and said said instances of complaints being voiced via the social media were being dealt with “strictly”.

Around half-a-dozen such videos emerged soon after Yadav’s post complaining about various grievances. A CRPF personnel came out with a video post addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding parity on facilities with military.

The posts of military personnel also came to fore protesting against the ‘sahayak’ system and it prompted Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat to issue a stern warning not to use social media for grievance redressal.

Erdogan meets with Trump to discuss regime attacks in Syria

April 18, 2017 by Nasheman

by Andolu Ajansi

American President Donald Trump has told President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the U. S. would not remain indifferent to Assad regime’s attacks on civilians anymore, according to a presidential source.

Trump spoke with Erdogan over the phone late Monday during which both leaders discussed cooperation on Syria and anti-terrorism, the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, said.

The two leaders discussed the Assad regime’s chemical attack on April 4 that killed around 100 civilians and injured 500 others in the opposition-held town of Khan Sheikhun in Idlib province.

Investigators in Turkey and international bodies believe sarin gas was used in the attack.

“We cannot stay silent over regime attacks anymore,” Trump told Erdogan, the source said.

They agreed Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the attack.

The American president thanked Turkey for backing the U.S. missile strikes on an Assad regime air base in Syria in retaliation for the chemical attack. Both sides highlighted the need for cooperation in the fight against terrorist groups, including Daesh, the source said.

Trump also told Erdogan he cared about the friendship between Turkey and the U. S., and noted there were important things to do together.

The two leaders also agreed to increase bilateral cooperation and partnership in Syria and Iraq, and the fight against the PKK, the source added.

Trump also congratulated Erdogan over the Yes win in the constitutional referendum on Sunday.

The call came a day after more than 51 percent of Turks voted in favor of 18 constitutional amendments that will, among other things, see Turkey switch from a parliamentary to a presidential system of governance.

Facebook to review how to handle violent videos

April 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Company promises to improve system days after killing in Cleveland was posted to social media platform.

Facebook

by Al Jazeera

Facebook has launched a review into how it handles violent videos and other offensive material, as a nationwide manhunt is under way for an American man who posted a video of a killing to the social media site.

The company said on Monday that it needed to improve after the video of the murder in Cleveland on Sunday remained on its website and mobile app for two hours.

In a statement, the social media platform said it would look for ways to make it easier for people to report such videos and speed up the process of reviewing items once they are reported.

‘We prioritise reports with serious safety implications for our community, and are working on making that review process go even faster,” said Justin Osofsky, Facebook’s vice president for global operations and media partnerships.

The incident was the latest disturbing crime captured on Facebook video in the United States, including the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old girl, two fatal shootings and the kidnapping and torture of a disabled 18-year-old man.

Facebook relies on its 1.9 billion users to report items that violate its terms of service.

Millions of items are reported each week in more than 40 languages and thousands of workers review them, Osofsky said.

Cleveland killing

Meanwhile, police said that they had received dozens of tips about the possible location of Cleveland suspect Steve Stephens.

Cleveland police, working on the case with help from investigators at the FBI and the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the Stephens’ arrest.

Stephens, 37, of Cleveland, Ohio, who was described as armed and dangerous, was also placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list.

He is wanted on a charge of aggravated murder in the death of Robert Godwin Sr.

In the video, Stephens gets out of his car and appears to randomly target Godwin, 74, who is holding a plastic shopping bag. Stephens says the name of a woman, whom Godwin does not seem to recognise.

“She’s the reason that this is about to happen to you,” Stephens tells Godwin before pointing a gun at him. Godwin can be seen shielding his face with the shopping bag.

Facebook said the suspect went live on the social media website at one point during the day, but not during the killing. Police had earlier said that Stephens broadcast the incident live.

The victim’s son, Robert Godwin Jr, told Cleveland.com that he could not bring himself to watch the video.

“I haven’t watched the video. I haven’t even looked at my cellphone or the news,” Godwin said. “I don’t really want to see it.”

He said his father, a retired foundry worker, collected aluminum cans and was probably looking for cans when Stephens approached him.

In a separate video posted on Facebook, Stephens claimed to have killed more than a dozen other people.

“Like I said, I killed 13, so I’m working on 14 as we speak,” he said.

Police did not verify any other shootings or deaths.
