The ongoing conflict in Afghanistan has forced 88,481 people to leave their homes since the beginning of 2017, according to a United Nations report.

Displacements occurred in 29 of the country’s 34 provinces, stated the report on Tuesday. It noted that the security situation across all regions had grown more volatile as clashes continue in a number of provinces.

North-eastern Kunduz and Badakhshan provinces have been witnessing especially fierce fighting as Taliban forces captured two districts within a week after the announcement of their spring offensive.

Since January, 34,881 individuals have been displaced in that region: “just under 40 percent of the total population displaced countrywide,” says the report.

In Kunduz, the UN estimates that, additionally, more than 30,000 individuals have been displaced by fighting in the district of Qala-e Zal, as well by fighting along the Kunduz-Khanabad highway in the past days alone.

Assessments to verify these reports are ongoing.

In 2016, more than 660,600 civilians fled their villages and homes. This year, the UN expects to see another 450,000 displaced persons inside the country.

More than half a million Afghans fled conflict in the country last year, according to the UN.

‘Shockingly high’ number of losses

Earlier this month, the US government’s Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) said Afghan security forces were killed at a “shockingly high” rate during what has historically been a winter lull in fighting against the Taliban.

In a report, SIGAR said 807 troops from the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF) died between January 1 and February 24.

“Afghanistan remains in the grip of a deadly war. Casualties suffered by [ANDSF] in the fight against the Taliban and other insurgents continue to be shockingly high,” says the report, released on Monday.

Levels of violence have traditionally dipped over Afghanistan’s cold winter months, but this year the Taliban continued to battle government forces, most notably in an April 19 attack on a military base outside the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

The massacre saw fighters armed with guns and suicide bombs slaughter at least 144 recruits, a US official told AFP news agency, though multiple sources have claimed the toll was higher still.

In the last hearing, the apex court had directed the medical examination of Justice Karnan, which he refused to undergo.

SC holds Mallya guilty of contempt; orders him to appear on July 10

May 9, 2017 by Nasheman

Vijay Mallya

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday found Vijay Mallya guilty of contempt of court and directed him to appear in the court on 10 July for arguing on quantum of punishment in the matter.

The liquor baron, who owes Indian banks Rs 9,000 crore, has been living in London since March last year, and the Indian government is pressing with the UK government for his extradition. Mallya fled to UK on 2 March 2016 pre-empting his likely arrest in India in the case of money laundering allegations.

Tuesday’s order pertains to Mallya’s disclosure of assets in the court. Earlier on 9 March, the court had asked the beleaguered but flamboyant businessman whether he had truthfully disclosed his assets before the court or not.

The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices A K Goel and U U Lalit had asked Mallya if he had been truthful after a consortium of banks led by the State Bank of India alleged that $40 million was transferred by Mallya to his three children in complete violation of the Karnataka High Court order

Moreover, the fact that $40 million was received by Mallya from a United Kingdom-based company Diageo PLC was not disclosed before the court here, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the banks, had alleged then.

The bench had taken note of the allegation, and wanted to know as to whether by transferring $40 million to his children, he violated the Karnataka High Court order in this regard or not.

The Karnataka High Court had earlier restrained Mallya from transferring or alienating any movable and immovable assets to any third party.

Mallya had received $40 million from Diageo as part of a $75 million sweet heart deal after he resigned as chairman of United Spirits in February 2016. He had quickly apportioned $40 million to his children, who are US citizens. He had disclosed this in an affidavit before the court in November 2016.

However, as per Rohatgi’s submission before the court, Mallya had not disclosed the fund he received from Diageo and transferred to his three children in the assets he disclosed before the court.

AAP stages ‘live demo’ of EVM tampering in Assembly

May 9, 2017 by Nasheman

evm machine

New Delhi: The AAP today staged a “live demonstration” of alleged EVM manipulation in the Delhi Assembly.

AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj claimed that anyone knowing a “secret code” can tamper with the EVMs and the code can be fed into a machine while casting vote.

The Election Commission has time and again rubbished allegations that EVMs can be programmed to favour any particular party.

Before Bhardwaj’s demonstration, Kejriwal tweeted, “Saurabh Bhardwaj will reveal the truth behind a big conspiracy in the country. Satyameva Jayate”.

Bhardwaj, who represents the Greater Kailash constituency, claimed that in his capacity as an engineer, he had extensively worked in this area and was aware of how the machines can be fiddled with.

Jammu woman alleges cop raped her, inserted bottle, chilli powder in private parts

May 9, 2017 by Nasheman

jammu

Srinagar: A 25-year-old woman in Kanachak area of Jammu has accused a station house officer of sexually assaulting her and torturing her for over a week while she was in custody there. She along with her husband has alleged that he forcibly stripped her, inserted a beer bottle and chilli powder in her private parts.

She had been in custody over allegations of theft by a couple for whom she was working as a domestic help. There are also allegations that her husband was arrested when he came to visit her while she was in custody.

The SHO who has been accused in the case, however, has denied the allegations and claimed that the woman is a “habitual offender”. He also alleged that she had been earlier arrested in Punjab in connection with cases related to theft and narcotics.

Vijay Atri, the victim’s lawyer, has claimed that 11 injury marks have been found on her body during her medical examination. The lawyer also asserted that the way the woman has been attacked is similar to the December 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case that took place in Delhi.

Though the woman has been granted bail and admitted to a hospital in Gandhi Nagar in Jammu, her husband is claiming that she is not getting the best treatment. A special investigation team has been appointed to probe the allegations in the case.

The Prime Minister’s Office has stepped into the controversy with Minister of State PMO Dr Jitendra Singh asking the Jammu and Kashmir government to look into the issue.

UN: 2m children displaced by South Sudan conflict

May 8, 2017 by Nasheman

Warnings by two UN agencies as a third county is reported to be on the brink of famine that has impacted 100,000 people.

Famine and war have created a huge humanitarian crisis [Goran Tomasevic/Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

The civil war in South Sudan has forced more than two million children to flee their homes, according to two UN agencies.

Children make up 62 percent of the more than 1.8 million South Sudanese refugees who have arrived mainly in Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan, say the UN children’s fund, UNICEF, and the refugee agency, UNHCR.

More than a million children have, meanwhile, been internally displaced.

“No refugee crisis today worries me more than South Sudan,” said Valentin Tapsoba, Africa director for UNHCR.

“That refugee children are becoming the defining face of this emergency is incredibly troubling.”

South Sudan has been riven by a civil conflict since a split between President Salva Kiir and his former deputy, Riek Machar, escalated in December 2013.

Tens of thousands have been killed and 3.5 million displaced.

About 100,000 people are facing a famine and a million are on the brink of famine.

The UN announcements came on the same day that a monitoring group warned a third South Sudanese county is at risk of famine.

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network said starvation is likely to occur in Koch county.

Famine already has been declared in the counties of Leer and Mayendit, with a million people said to be at risk.

The new report says famine is likely to spread during the lean season for farmers from July to September. It says that without humanitarian aid, famine could be declared in even more areas.

The African nation’s civil war, now in its fourth year, has blocked aid to some regions.

The combination of fighting and famine in the world’s youngest country has created one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.

Last month, the US condemned Kiir for the state’s “man-made” famine and ongoing conflict, urging him to fulfil a month-old pledge of a unilateral truce by ordering his troops back to their barracks.

“We must see a sign that progress is possible,” Nikki Haley, US ambassador to the UN, told a Security Council briefing on South Sudan on Tuesday.

“We must see that ceasefire implemented.”

Gujarat Lions beat KXIP by 6 wickets

May 8, 2017 by Nasheman

Gujarat Lions

Mohali: Dwayne Smith struck a whirlwind 74 as Gujarat Lions defeated Kings XI Punjab by six wickets in an Indian Premier League game, here Sunday.

Sent into bat, Hashim Amla played a brilliant knock to notch up his second century of the ongoing IPL and power Kings XI Punjab to a challenging 189 for three.

Amla, thus, became the second batsman after Virat Kohli to register two centuries in a single IPL season.

Amla made 104 off just 60 balls with the help of eight fours and five huge hits over the fence to take Kings XI forward.

He was ably supported by Shaun Marsh (58 off 43 balls) as the duo shared 125 runs for the second wicket to set the platform for the total.

Later, Smith turned out to be the architect of the victory for Gujarat with a whirlwind 74 off just 39 deliveries to get Gujarat off to a flier while chasing a challenging 190 for win.

Smith struck eight boundaries and four huge hits over the fence during his explosive knock.

Chasing the target, Gujarat rode on Smith’s brisk batting to race to 91 for no loss inside 10 overs.

Smith was at his attacking best as he dealt mostly in boundaries and sixes.

Together with Ishan Kishan (29 off 24 balls), Smith shared 91 runs for the opening partnership to lay the foundation for the chase.

Dinesh Karthik (35 not out off 23 balls) played a short cameo towards the end as Gujarat Lions reached 192 for four in 19.4 over in their pursuit of 190.
