Peacocks are not celibate – Bird experts debunk Rajasthan judge’s absurd claims

June 1, 2017 by Nasheman

Peacocks

Kolkata: India’s national bird the peacock reproduces like any other bird, say Indian bird experts who have denounced claims by a Rajasthan High Court judge about the peacock being “celibate”.

“There is absolutely no truth in this. The peacock reproduces by copulation like every other bird. There is nothing scientific about this at all. We are the laughing stock of the world… People are aghast that such a thing can even be said,” noted ornithologist Bikram Grewal told IANS.

Rajasthan High Court Judge Mahesh Chandra Sharma said on Wednesday that “the peahen gets pregnant” only by “swallowing the tears of the peacock” and that peacocks don’t have sex.

He also suggested that cows should replace the tiger as the national animal because “it’s also holy”.

The Indian peafowl (scientific name Pavo cristatus) is also known as the blue peafowl and comes in Schedule-I of the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. This bird is listed as of

Least Concern (LC) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Male Indian peafowl shows the characteristic colourful tail feathers or train during breeding season. Its train makes the male peafowl one of the largest flying birds in the world.

Both the peacock and peahen have the avian reproductive organ known as a cloaca, which transfers sperm in between partners.

K. Sankar, Director of Salim Ali Centre For Ornithology and Natural History, who is known for his work with Asiatic elephants, deer, primates and tigers as also peafowls, said the mating process in the peafowls lasts only for a “few seconds”.

“In my 30 years of research, only on two or three occasions I have observed this phenomenon. Male has sperms, female has eggs. The male injects the sperm into the cloaca. The sperms go inside and fertilise the egg. They do mate,” Sankar told IANS.

“What he (the judge) has talked about is a myth. People see only dancing peacocks. It is the choice of the peahen to select the best male. Whoever dances the best and has the longest and tallest train feathers, that individual is selected by the peahen. The actual mating is not observed by many researchers or casual observers, and this happens only for a few fraction of seconds,” Sankar said.

The remarks of Sharma, who retired on Wednesday, have been widely criticised on social media.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara offers resignation

June 1, 2017 by Nasheman

parameshwar g

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Thursday offered to resign on instruction of high command for the upcoming assembly elections preparations.

However, Parameshwara will continue to be the Congress Karnataka unit president.

Reportedly, the decision has been taken so that the leader can devote his full time towards discharging his duties as the party president.

He has been the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president since 2010.

The Congress Party yesterday said the upcoming state elections will be fought under the leadership of Chief Minister K. Siddaramaiah.

The AICC has firmed up a year-long organisational mobilisation plan for Karnataka Congress, from block level to PCC, as part of its all-out effort to retain power in the only big southern state where the party faces challenges from BJP and JDS.

As part of the organisational mobilisation, senior leaders, including ministers and legislators, will take out a ‘political parikarma’ across 30 districts to organise events and in propagating policy initiatives of the Siddharamaiah Government since 2013.

Karnataka will go to elections next year.

Eight Youth Cong workers held in Kannur for calf slaughter

June 1, 2017 by Nasheman

cow

Kannur: Eight Youth Congress activists were today arrested in connection with the public butchering of a calf here recently as part of their protest against the ban on sale of cattle at the animal markets for slaughter.

Police had recently registered a case against the activists under Section 120A of the Kerala Police Act on a complaint from Yuva Morcha district general secretary C C Rateesh.

The offence deals with the slaughter of any animal in a way that causes annoyance or inconvenience to the public and is punishable with imprisonment up to a year or a fine of up to Rs 5,000 or both.

Police said the arrests were made after incorporating two more sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and IPC sections 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence) in the FIR.

The video of the slaughter was shared by Kerala BJP chief Kummanam Rajasekharan on Twitter, describing the act as the “peak of cruelty”.

Beef fests had also been held across the state by the youth wings of the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in protest against the Centre’s ban.

The Congress party had earlier suspended three Youth Congress leaders — Kannur parliament mandalam president Rijil Makkutti, who led the protest, Josy Kandathil and Sharafudeen — in connection with the butchering of the calf.

Makkutti was among those arrested today.

The Youth Congress protest on May 27 in Kannur against the ban on sale and purchase of cattle at animal markets for the purpose of slaughter hogged national headlines and triggered a public outrage for the cruelty shown by the protesters towards the calf.

The meat of the calf was distributed among the people for free.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had deplored the incident and the party had directed its Kerala unit to take strong action against those involved in the act.
