Many Indians still languishing in Pakistan jails: Jaipur man

August 17, 2018 by Nasheman

Gajanand Sharma, a Jaipur man who was released from a Pakistani jail earlier this week after over 36 years, said that many more prisoners like him were still languishing in prisons in Pakistan.

His grand-daughter Nikita told the media on Thursday that Sharma still needs to come out of the haunting pains he suffered during his long stay in the Pakistani jail.

Sharma disappeared in 1982 and his family members were clueless about his whereabouts till May 4 when they received a letter from the local police asking for verification.

Nikita, who spoke on behalf of her grandfather, said that the other Indian prisoners who were still lodged in the prisons were paying the price for crossing the border by mistake.

She said that prison authorities used to brutally torture Sharma, who at one point also had his wrist broken.

He also bears a cut mark on his ankle which according to Sharma was meted out to him by the jail authorities.

According to the family, Sharma is still comfortable sitting in dim light. Whenever someone puts on the fan, he gets scared and recalls horrific memories where he was given electric shocks on his feet.

Nikita said her grandfather crossed the border into Pakistan by mistake and has been repenting ever since.

Sharma’s wife, Makhni Devi said her husband was into wrestling during his younger days.

During that time, he used to gulp two litres of milk and had a healthy diet. That’s the reason he returned alive after being a witness to so many tortures, she added.

His memory also seems unstable at times and is forgetting things, Makhni Devi said.

“I struggled a lot with my children. I worked as a maid in houses, cleaned utensils, mixed spices, worked in hospital and what not to raise the children. Now, I am happy that my husband is back to take care of his family,” she added.

India beat Nepal to make U-15 SAFF final

August 17, 2018 by Nasheman

The Indian U-15 womens team progressed to the final of the SAFF U-15 Championship after defeating Nepal 2-1 in the semi-finals at the Changlimithang Stadium here on Thursday.

Lynda Kom’s 31st minute strike followed by Kritina Devi’s 58th minute goal led the Indian Women to a hard fought win over a determined Nepalese side, after the opponents had found the net in 37th minute through Rajani Thokar.

The Indians had the chance to take the lead in the first minute itself but Avika Singh’s shot crept inches past the goal. Nepal recuperated after the nervy start and despite focusing on counter-attacks to test the Indian defence, could not give the U-15 Women a scare.

In the 25th minute, Avika Singh had another opportunity to give India the lead but this time her shot rattled the bar and went out after Shilky Devi had found her in the box with some crafty play. A minute later, Sunita Munda hit the Nepal sidenetting as India upped the ante.

The breakthrough came in the 31st minute when Lynda Kom was found inside the box by a cross from Sunita Munda and Kom slotted the ball home with sheer acumen to give the Indian Women a solitary goal lead.

However in the 37th minute, Nepal equalized their deficit when goalkeeper Manish made a howler of a routine save and Rajani Thokar latched on to find the net for the opponents as the scoreline read 1-1.

In the 55th minute, Lynda Kom was once again provided with an opportunity to find the net, but this time, an onrushing custodian saved her shot. Three minutes later, Kritina Devi chipped the Nepalese custodian from distance and found the back of the net to give India the lead as the scoreline read 2-1.

Sunita Munda’s speed down the middle of the pitch proved to be threat for the Nepalese defence line and in the 66th minute, she found Shilky Devi, whose shot was saved by the opposition custodian.

Although Nepal attacked with numbers in the dying embers of the match, the Indian Women committed bodies in defence and matched blow to blow. The full-time scoreline read 2-1 as India defeated Nepal in the semi-finals.

The final is slated for Saturday and India will face the winners of the second semi-final clash between hosts Bhutan and Bangladesh.

BCCI, cricket team join nation in condoling Vajpayee’s death

August 17, 2018 by Nasheman

The Indian cricket team and the BCCI joined the nation in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away on Thursday after battling ill health. He was 93.

“The Indian cricket team and BCCI condoles the sad demise of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Atalji dedicated his life in service of the nation,” the BCCI said in a statement.

Vajpayee, the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete a full term in office, died here on Thursday after a prolonged illness.

Several former and current India cricketers also took to Twitter to condole the demise of the former Prime Minister.

Former India captain and coach Anil Kumble wrote: “A sad day for the country, as we lose one of our greatest leaders. #AtalBihariVajpayee contributed so much for the betterment of the country. May his soul rest in peace.”

“It’s been a sad week, the demise of one of India’s finest leaders “Mr. Vajpayee” is heartbreaking,” India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin wrote.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan wrote: “My deepest condolences on the passing of our former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji. One of the few politicians I always respected for his honesty and devotion to the national cause. May his soul rest in peace.”

India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara in his message wrote: “Deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji. His values and ideologies will be remembered forever.”

Vajpayee, who was honoured with the Bharat Ratna in 2014, was undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

His condition worsened on Wednesday evening with leaders from across the political spectrum thronging the hospital and enquiring about his health.

India U-23 footballers to travel to Australia for camp

August 17, 2018 by Nasheman

A 22-member India U-23 football team will travel to Australia on Friday as part of their preparation for the forthcoming SAFF Suzuki Cup. The squad has been camping here since July 28.

India will be based at the Valentine Sports Park in Sydney for another 16-day long preparatory camp before they eventually leave for Dhaka on September 1, according to a statement.

“The exposure trip was planned before the Asian Games but unfortunately, we were barred from taking part in the Games. We didn’t see any reason to cancel the trip and had to postpone it prior to the SAFF Tournament,” head coach Stephen Constantine said.

Apart from the 22 players, two players have been kept in reserve who might get a call-up to join the contingent in Australia if circumstances demand so; 20 boys will eventually travel for the SAFF Suzuki Cup.

Constantine also thanked the clubs for releasing the players from their club commitments for national duty.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the clubs for letting the players join the more-than-a-month long National Team Camp. We need such support from them until the AFC Asian Cup 2019. It’s good for the country as well as the clubs. I appreciate that”, he added.

“Although we didn’t qualify for the AFC U23 Championship, these boys showed good signs in Qatar last year. A few new boys have come and they’re putting in an effort to integrate with the other boys.”

“It’s a group of talented youngsters and I believe a good number of players will graduate to the senior team in time,” the coach said.

On being asked whether the U-23 boys will be under pressure against the senior teams in the SAFF Suzuki Cup, he explained: “I take it as a challenge for us. If the senior boys compete in the SAFF Tournament, these young boys won’t get the opportunity to play anytime soon. I think this tournament should be treated as a platform to give more exposure to the U23 boys which will be beneficial for India in future.”

The list of 22 players along with 2 reserves is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Vishal Kaith, Kamaljit Singh, Sukhdev Patil.

Defenders: Davinder Singh, Salam Ranjan Singh, Sarthak Golui, Subhasish Bose, Mohd. Sajid Dhot, Jerry Lalrinzuala.

Midfielders: Nikhil Poojary, Isaac Vanmalswama, Nandha Kumar, Vinit Rai, Germanpreet Singh, Anirudh Thapa, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Ashique Kuruniyan, Vignesh D.

Forwards: Sumit Passi, Hitesh Sharma, Manvir Singh, Farukh Choudhary.

Reserves: Lalruatthara, Rohit Kumar.

Delhi Dynamos sign striker Kaluderovic

August 17, 2018 by Nasheman

Delhi Dynamos on Friday announced the signing of Serbian striker Andrija Kaluderovic for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) football season.

The 31-year-old joins the ISL capital side on the back of finishing as the top scorer for Wellington Phoenix in the Australian League last season.

Kaluderovic’s signing takes the Dynamos foreign quota to four players, according to a release.

Kaluderovic has previously had stints in Serbia, China, Spain, Switzerland, Lithuania and Australia and has scored more than 100 goals in 236 club appearances.

The striker has also been capped thrice by the Serbian national team.

Head coach Josep Gombau is confident that Kaluderovic can replicate his past form in the ISL.

The former Racing Santander forward won the Lithuanian League and Cup double in 2016 with Zalgiris, where he was also the golden boot winner in the league.

“I am excited to have joined a new league and a new team in Delhi Dynamos. The popularity of ISL is for everyone to see and a lot of foreign players are here so I am no stranger to this competition. I want to give my best and hopefully we will have a good season,” a delighted Kaluderovic said.

Arrest warrant issued against Zardari in money laundering case: Report

August 17, 2018 by Nasheman

A banking court here on Friday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against former President and PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari in a multi-billion money laundering scam, the media reported.

The court directed the authorities to present Zardari and other suspects before it by September 4. However, Pakistan Peoples Party spokesperson Farhatullah Babar issued a statement citing Zardari’s counsel Farooq Naek as saying that no warrant against the leader was issued, Dawn online reported.

The Federal Investigation Agency is investigating 32 people, including Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur, in relation to money laundering from fictitious accounts. Zardari’s close aide Hussain Lawai was arrested last month in connection with the probe.

The banking court earlier approved an extension in Talpur’s interim bail until the next hearing.

The case revolves around a 2015 inquiry into suspicious transactions when 29 “benami” accounts were identified — 16 of them in the Summit Bank, eight in the Sindh Bank and five in the United Bank Limited.

The fake accounts were allegedly used for channelling funds received in the form of heavy bribes and kickbacks.

Zardari and Talpur, among others were said to be involved in using certain bank accounts for suspicious transactions totalling Rs 35 billion.

Hussain Lawai, former chairman of the Pakistan Stock Exchange and a close aide of Zardari, Omni Group of Companies chairman Khawaja Anvar Majeed and his brother Ghani Majeed along with co-accused Taha Raza — head of the Summit Bank’s corporate unit — have already been arrested in the case.

Explore possibility to reduce water level in Mullaperiyar dam: SC

August 17, 2018 by Nasheman

Expressing grave concern over the flood “crises” in Kerala, the Supreme Court on Friday suggested that the Disaster Management sub-committee, National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) and the court-appointed committee should meet to explore the possibility of reducing the water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam reservoir there to 139 feet.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said: “We are not experts. We are leaving it to the committee… to bring down the water level to 139 feet from 142 feet at the Mullaperiyar Dam”, as the Centre informed it that the sub-committee has decided to reduce the water level by releasing it.

The bench asked for measures to be in place to see to it that inhabitants downstream were safe before the release of water from the dam.

The court said the idea was to resolve the “calamity, rescue and rehabilitate people” caught in a flood.

The bench also asked the Kerala Chief Secretary to file an affidavit on what steps were being taken for disaster management, rescue and rehabilitation of those affected.

The Kerala death toll touched 164 on Friday after incessant rains began there on August 8. A total of 2.23 lakh people have been shifted to relief camps, while thousands still waited to be rescued.

Situation of Kerala flood is being monitored on a “minute-by-minute” basis, Additional Solicitor General P.S. Narasimha told the top court on the Centre’s behalf.

The bench asked Tamil Nadu to “scrupulously” comply with instructions to bring down the water level in the dam.

It then posted the matter for next hearing on August 24.

The court was hearing a PIL filed seeking directions for management of water in the Mullaperiyar Dam reservoir and announcement of a disaster management plan in relation to the dam.

The petition was filed by a Kerala resident Russel Joy who also sought direction for Tamil Nadu to ensure proper management of water release from the dam, so that no harm is caused to people living downstream.

Kerala is facing the heaviest rains and floods witnessed in the state since 1924 which by now have caused massive destruction with damages to crops and properties estimated to be thousands of crores.

Deve Gowda mourned death of A B Vajpayee

August 17, 2018 by Nasheman

Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda today mourned the death of AB Vajpayee, saying with his passing a vacuum has been created in polity, as several state leaders joined him in expressing grief. In his condolence message, Gowda said with the death of Vajpayee, the country lost a statesman and politician who believed in the country’s diverse culture. “He was a true parliamentarian.

With his death, a vacuum has been created in polity and end of an era of politics in this country. He was a great orator who refused to attack his opponent personally. He did not allow the House to be disturbed during my tenure as the prime minister for the 11months,” Gowda said.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy described Vajpayee as being among a “rare breed” of politicians who lived as per the values they believed in.

“His death has created a vacuum in the political circle of the country,” he said. Quoting a line from Vajpayee’s poem that said “Will never accept defeat, will never be afraid of new challenges”, Kumaraswamy said it was a mirror to his personality. He was a great orator and parliamentarian, he said. Congress’ Karnataka president Dinesh Gundu Rao took to Twitter to condole the death.

“Atal Bihari Vajpayee, one of the most well-respected, loved and broad hearted political statesman India has seen. A towering personality and a great orator. I express my deepest condolences on his passing away. We are all going to miss him,” he tweeted. BJP state president and former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa said it was a great loss to the country, especially BJP, for which he was a leading and guiding spirit.

“Country has lost a great political thinker and a statesman in the death of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee,” Yeddyurappa said in his message.

The former chief minister recalled that Vajpayee’s organizational and political acumen was put to test during his regime when he led the NDA comprising more than 25 parties with political agenda of their own.

“Still the words of Vajpayee at Mumbai plenary session of BJP in 1990 when BJP got only two seats in the Lok Sabha, ‘Andhera Chatega, Suraj Niklega, Kamal Khilega’ (Darkness goes, sunrises and lotus blooms) keeps reminding me of his vision and optimism in politics. This vision and optimism of Vajpayee made the workers and leaders to work harder and Narendra Modi to win the elections 2014 by a thumping majority,” Yeddyurappa said.

Others who expressed grief over the death were deputy chief minister Parameshwara, Congress vice president Eshwar Khandre and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
