India jump to 9th spot in women’s hockey rankings

August 8, 2018 by Nasheman

Following their quarter-final finish at the Women’s Hockey World Cup, India have jumped a place to be ninth in the world rankings announced by International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Tuesday.

Sjoerd Marijne-coached India have 1138 points as they made it to the last eight round at the World Cup in London last week.

World Cup runners-up Ireland made the biggest of gains as they moved from 16th up to eighth position. Their previous highest ranking was 14th.

World Cup winners the Netherlands remained the world’s number one team as they clinched their record-extending eight title with a 6-0 triumph over the Irish girls. The Netherlands have been the top-ranked side since October 2011.

England remain in second spot following their sixth place finish in London while Australia jumped up to third, leapfrogging reigning Pan American champions Argentina, who move to fourth and Commonwealth Games champions New Zealand who dropped to sixth. Germany meanwhile move up to fifth.

Spain took the bronze medals in London to achieve their highest ever finish in World Cup history. Their 3-1 victory against Australia has seen them move up to seventh in the rankings.

Behind India are the likes of South Korea (10), China (11) and the US (12) — all of them lost grounds after their poor performances at the World Cup.

Bengal former IPS officer’s husband arrested in extortion case

August 8, 2018 by Nasheman

The West Bengal CID on Tuesday arrested former West Midnapore district police chief Bharati Ghosh’s husband M.A.V. Raju in an extortion case after his anticipatory bail was rejected by the Calcutta High Court, a CID officer said.

The High Court had rejected Raju’s bail plea in connection with the probe into a case of alleged extortion and illegal exchange of banned notes for gold in West Midnapore district’s Daspur.

The Criminal Investigation Department had earlier arrested four police officers who had worked under Ghosh and the caretaker of an apartment in south Kolkata, suspected to be owned by her, in the case.

More than Rs 2.4 crore, important government documents, and sealed liquor bottles were seized during raids at a number of flats in south Kolkata’s Madurdaha.

A large amount of unaccounted cash was also seized from the houses of several police officers named in the FIR.

The CID raids started following a case of extortion and criminal conspiracy was lodged in Daspur on February 1 after gold trader Chandan Majhi complained against some police officers in the district thought to be close to Ghosh.

Ghosh, once a favourite of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, reportedly fell from grace and sought voluntary retirement after she was transferred as Commandant of West Bengal Armed Police’s 3rd Battalion. Her application was accepted.

The CID issued arrest warrant against her on February 10 on the charges of extortion and criminal conspiracy and sent teams outside the state to look for her.

Karunanidhi remains critical, Stalin meets CM

August 7, 2018 by Nasheman

DMK President M. Karunanidhi’s health remained critical on Tuesday, party leaders said, as his son and party stalwart M.K. Stalin met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami here.

The meeting took place at Palaniswami’s residence. Further details were not available.

Stalin was accompanied by some party colleagues.

DMK cadres continued to mass in large numbers outside the Kauvery Hospital where Karunanidhi, 94, has been admitted since July 28.

“Ezhundhu Vaa Thalaivaa” (Awake, our leader) and “Vaa, Vaa, Gopalapuram Polaam Vaa” (Come, Come, let’s go to Gopalapuram) were among the slogans raised by the emotionally-charged crowd, referring to the locality where the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has a house.

Hundreds of men and women have assembled outside the hospital located in Alwarpet in south Chennai.

“We want to hear the good news about our leader’s health. That is why we are here,” said a party member.

The crowd outside the hospital started to swell after the medical bulletin issued by Kauvery Hospital on Monday evening said that Karunanidhi’s condition had deteriorated.

Karunanidhi, one of the most senior politicians in India, was Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister five times but has been ailing for some time.

On Monday, the hospital said Karunanidhi’s response to medical intervention over the next 24 hours would determine the prognosis.

“There has been a decline in the medical condition of Karunanidhi. Maintaining his vital organ functions continues to remain a challenge considering his age related ailments,” said the hospital statement.

The DMK chief was admitted to Kauvery Hospital for the first time on July 18 for change of tracheostomy tube.

On July 26, the hospital said Karunanidhi was suffering from urinary tract infection and he was being treated with intravenous antibotics and fluids.

However, the DMK leader’s condition turned bad on July 28 with a drop in his blood pressure and he was shifted to the hospital. He has remained there since then.

Rajnath calls shelter home horrors ‘sad, shameful’

August 7, 2018 by Nasheman

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday told the Lok Sabha that the shelter home incidents in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are “sad and shameful” and assured the House that steps would be taken to prevent recurrence of such acts.

“I direct the concerned ministry to issue an advisory to all states so that no such incident is repeated. Running shelter homes can be investigated,” Singh assured the opposition.

“Whatever happened in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh is sad and shameful,” he said during the question hour.

However, there was again an uproar after the Union Minister praised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government for taking “concrete steps” after the incident in the Deoria shelter home surfaced.

“He (Adityanath) called a meeting of all the officers and directed them to take strict action. The District Planning Officer was suspended and the managers of the shelter home were arrested,” Rajnath Singh said.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said: “The issue is being raised in the House consecutively for three days, let us have a parliamentary panel to inspect and submit a report.”

Opposition parties, including the Congress, Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party staged a walkout demanding an impartial probe into both Deoria and Muzaffarpur shelter home rapes.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said: “These incidents are very unfortunate. All the concerned members should take appropriate action on such incidents in their constituencies.”

Both shelter home horrors sparked a political storm in Parliament after the cases revealed sordid tales of women being abused at these places.

A total of 24 girls were rescued from the shelter home in Deoria late on Sunday after one of them told the police that they were being sexually abused.

Officials told IANS that 18 girls were missing from the privately-run shelter home which earlier got funds from the government. Its affiliation to the Women and Child Welfare Department was cancelled in 2017 after a CBI probe revealed some discrepancies.

At least 34 minor girls were raped at the Muzaffarpur shelter home. The crime came to light in July when the Bihar Social Welfare Department filed an FIR based on a social audit of the shelter home conducted by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.

Siddu against to shifting film city from Mysuru to Ramanagara

August 7, 2018 by Nasheman

The proposed film city in Ramanagar district, the home turf of chief minister HD Kumaraswamy has irked the former CM Siddaramaiah, who also happens to be the chairman of the state coordination committee.

Siddaramaiah has urged Kumaraswamy not to shift the proposed film city from Mysuru to Ramanagara as this was the wish of legendary actor late Dr. Rajkumar.

When Siddaramaiah was the chief minister, he had sanctioned 400 acres of land in the Mysuru city for the ambitious film city. But due to the acquisition-related issues, the project has not taken off until now.

In his maiden budget, Kumaraswamy proposed shifting this film city from Mysuru to Ramanagara. He also proposed a cinema university in the proposed film city.

Irked by this move, Siddaramaiah now has written a letter to the CM urging him not to shift the proposed film city out of Mysuru. “Legendary actor late Dr. Rajkumar also wanted this film city in Mysuru. So, it should come up only in the city,” he stated in his letter.
