2 killed in accident on Delhi’s Signature Bridge

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Two medical students on a motorcycle were killed on Friday after ramming into a divider on the new Signature Bridge here and falling into the Yamuna river, police said.

The incident occurred at 8.40 a.m. on the bridge’s left turn loop.

“The deceased have been identified as Satya Vijay Shankaran, 23, and Chandershekhar,26,” Deputy Commissioner of Police A.K. Thakur said.

“They were riding a KTM duke bike at a very high speed. When they took the left turn, the bike lost its balance and hit the divider. With the impact of collision, the two fell off from the bridge. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead,” the DCP said.

“Being a left turn, the possibility of the victims performing stunts has been ruled out.”

Shankaran, a native of Ranchi, was interning in Hindu Rao Hospital, while Chandershekhar, from south Delhi’s Khanpur, was a second year MBBS student at the Hindu Rao Medical College.

The police found the bike on the bridge.

The bridge across the Yamuna river was opened to public on November 4.

India protests Pakistan’s denial of consular access to Sikh pilgrims

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

India on Friday strongly protested Pakistan’s denial of consular access to Sikh pilgrims visiting two gurdwaras there on the occasion of Gurpurab – the 549th birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev.

“India has today lodged a strong protest with the government of Pakistan that despite having been granted prior travel permission by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, the consular officials of the High Commission of India in Islamabad were harassed and denied access on Thursday and Friday at Gurdwara Nankana Sahib and Gurudwara Sacha Sauda to the Indian pilgrims visiting Pakistan under the Bilateral Protocol,” the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

“As a result of such harassment they were compelled to return to Islamabad without performing their diplomatic and consular duties vis-a-vis Indian pilgrims.

“We have shared our grave concern that this is the third consecutive visit of the Indian Sikh pilgrims when Pakistan has prevented the Indian High Commission officials from meeting the visiting Indian nationals on the pretext of security in order to deflect attention from Pakistan’s violation of the international legal instruments and conventions like the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961 and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations 1963”.

The statement said that this breached the letter and spirit of the 1974 Bilateral Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines signed by the two countries and the 1992 Code of Conduct for the treatment of diplomatic and consular personnel in India and Pakistan.

It said that Pakistan’s action was in contrast to India’s treatment to their High Commissioner and the consular officials in New Delhi who have been provided full access to meet Pakistani pilgrims who are currently in India on a pilgrimage to Kalyar Sharif.

Friday’s development comes after India on Thursday decided to build a corridor from Gurdaspur district in Punjab to Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak.

Kartarpur Sahib is where Guru Nanak died in 1539.

New Delhi urged Islamabad to build the corridor on their side of the International Border and demanded that Sikh pilgrims should be allowed access throughout the year.

According to Friday’s Ministry statement, India also “expressed grave concern at the reports of attempts being made during the ongoing visit of the Indian pilgrims to Pakistan, to incite communal disharmony and intolerance and promote secessionist tendencies with the objective of undermining India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

“Pakistan has been called upon to take all measures to not allow its territory to be used for any hostile propaganda and support for secessionist tendencies against India in keeping with the commitments made under the Simla Agreement, 1972 and endorsed in the Lahore Declaration, 1999.

“Pakistan has been reminded that such actions are not in consonance with the stated intentions of Pakistan to facilitate the visits of Indian Sikh pilgrims, especially as we commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji.”

Congress playing into the hands of anti-nationals: JK BJP

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Reiterating that the Congress is playing into the hands of anti-national forces along with the NC and the PDP, Jammu and Kashmir unit of the BJP Thursday said Governor Satya Pal Malik foiled their “sinister design” by dissolving the state assembly.

The governor dissolved the assembly Wednesday night, hours after the PDP staked claim to form government with the backing of rival NC and the Congress.

“Congress is playing into the hands of anti-nationals. The Congress along with the NC and the PDP conspired against the democratic forces. The governor has foiled their sinister design,” BJP state president Ravinder Raina told reporters here.

BJP senior leader Kavinder Gupta had Wednesday accused the three parties – the Congress, PDP and NC – of forging an alliance to form a government in the state on “directions of Pakistan.”

Following the BJP charges, J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president G A Mir Thursday asked the BJP to either apologise or make public the evidence on its allegations.

Lauding Malik’s decision to dissolve the assembly, kept in suspended animation since June 19 after imposition of the Governors Rule, Raina said the conspiracy was against nationalistic forces, but it failed.

Raina said the whole conspiracy was hatched against the people of Jammu and Ladakh regions at the behest of Congress bosses in Delhi, but their designs have been exposed, he added.

Raina said the masterminds of the whole conspiracy were Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, Ghulam Nabi Azad and other senior state leaders of the party.

“This has also come to the notice that the Congress party has conspired along with other anti-National forces on the directions of Pakistan,” he added.

Raina said the NC and the PDP on behest of the Congress tried to sabotage the grass root level democratic process in the recent civic body polls, but miserably failed.

He said their grassroots workers were about to contest the civic body polls, but they boycotted it in the name of protecting Article 35 A of the Constitution.

Raina said the democracy has been strengthened in the state of by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

6 Bengaluru women constables go undercover, nab jewellery thief in temple

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

It was a typical Tuesday morning for trickster Uma, alias Durgi, who set out to the temple in Banashankari in Bengaluru where she usually carried out her theft plans. However, thanks to the work of six women constables from the Kumaraswamy Layout police station, she was caught and arrested.

Uma would frequent the temple in the locality and target elderly women and young children and steal their gold chains or other jewellery. She would frequent the temple on Tuesdays and Fridays as she believed those were her ‘lucky’ days. She would befriend elderly women and act really friendly to young children. After she gained their trust, she’d spend time with them in the temple and unsuspectingly steal a piece of jewellery from them.

Police officials estimate that she has stolen at least 35 chains from unsuspecting victims till date.

An increase in the number of thefts over the last few months, particularly during festival times, resulted in the temple authorities alerting the police. The cops then installed six plainclothes policewomen, including two of whom were pregnant, in the temple on Tuesday morning. The policewomen kept a watch on the temple premises and looked for any suspicious persons, when they spotted Uma and caught her in the act.

Uma was arrested and booked under Section 379 (punishment for theft).

Speaking to TNM, Bengaluru DCP South, Annamalai SP, said, “In the past, we have we have heard stories of a gang of robbers attacking lorry drivers on NICE road and have sent out plainclothes policemen to capture them, but this is the first time that we’ve undertaken such an operation with a group of women officers.”

As per the DCP, many temple authorities and victims of theft had given complaints over several months, which the cops then backtracked and looked through CCTV footage and set about capturing the culprit.

“We took note of what was in the CCTV footage, then over the past few weeks we sent our women constables in disguise to the temple to take note of any suspicious looking persons. They monitored the visitors to the temple very carefully and noticed the suspect, whom they eventually nabbed on Tuesday,” said Inspector Guruprasad of the Kumaraswamy Layout police station.

The DCP also asked the public to be alert when going to crowded places, saying, “Particularly during festival times, temples can get very crowded. People should be cautious when visiting these places and take care to ensure that they do not become victims of theft.”

Harmanpreet has ‘no regrets’ leaving Mithali out of World T20 semis

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Defending the team management’s decision to bench veteran Mithali Raj even after Friday’s heartbreaking 8-wicket semi-final loss to England, India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur maintained that she had “no regrets”.

“Whatever we decided, we decided for the team. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, no regrets,” Harmanpreet said at the post-match presentation at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium here.

“I’m proud of the way my girls played through the tournament. This is a learning for us because we are a young team.”

On a pitch that wasn’t the easiest to bat on, the English duo of Natalie Sciver (54 not out) and Amy Ellen Jones (51 not out) displayed great technique to deny India any chances of a comeback after the spinners removed the openers within the first five overs of the England chase.

Hailing World No.2 England’s approach in the semi-final, the India skipper said: “Sometimes you have to change your game according to the wicket. England bowled really well, read the wicket really well.

“It was not an easy total to chase, and our bowlers bowled really well. We stretched the match till the 18th over.”

Harmanpreet further maintained that this World T20 was another learning curve for her young side and pointed out the need to focus on mental strength.

“I think we are a young team and we still need to work on our mental strength. If we can work on how to play under pressure, that will change how we play these games,” she said.

Kovind, Amarinder to lay Kartarpur corridor foundation stone next week

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday said that he and President Ram Nath Kovind will jointly lay the foundation stone of the Kartarpur corridor project in Dera Baba Nanak area of Gurdaspur district on November 26.

“Happy to share that I’ll be joining President Ram Nath Kovind ji in laying foundation stone for Kartarpur Corridor to International Border at Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur, on November 26. It will be a great moment indeed for all devotees of Sri Guru Nanak Dev,” the Chief Minister tweeted.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday decided to develop the corridor from Gurdaspur in Punjab to the International Border (IB) to facilitate the passage of pilgrims to the Kartarpur Sahib gurudwara in Pakistan as part of the 550th birth annversary celebrations of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev, next year.

However, the Centre clarified that India’s decision was not in response to any proposal from Pakistan.

The resolution was passed after many weeks of internal consultations and preparations within the government.

The gurdwara is significant for the Sikh community since Guru Nanak Dev spent 18 years of his life in Kartarpur till he died in 1539.

It is located around 2 km from the IB between both countries and can be seen from the Indian side.

Congress distances itself from C.P. Joshi’s remarks

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

The Congress on Friday distanced itself from senior leader C.P. Joshi’s statement that “only Brahmins know and can talk about Hinduism” with party President Rahul Gandhi saying his remarks were against the ideology of the party and he should apologise for it.

He also warned party leaders to refrain from making any statements which may hurt sentiments of any section of the society.

“C.P. Joshi’s statement is against the ideals of the Congress party. Party leaders should refrain from making any statement which may hurt any section of the society,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

“Respecting the principles of the party and sentiments of its workers, Joshiji would definitely realise his mistake. He should express remorse for his statement.”

Gandhi’s remarks came after a video of Joshi surfaced on Thursday in which he is heard saying that only pandits and brahmins knew about Hinduism and were learned enough to speak about it.

“Does anyone know what is the caste of Uma Bharti? What is the caste of Sadhvi Ritambhara? In this country, if anyone knows about religion, it is the pandits and the brahmins,” Joshi is heard saying in the video.
