Delhi’s air quality remains ‘very poor’ for fourth straight day

November 22, 2018 by Nasheman

Delhi’s air quality remained ‘very poor’ for the fourth straight day on Wednesday, and is likely to remain in the same category for the next few days.

“Air quality is in the upper range of ‘very poor’ and is expected to remain within the same category for the next 2-3 days,” said a forecast by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).

On Wednesday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi was 373, the same as on Tuesday, with no relief in sight.

Official reports claim that now stubble burning in the neighbouring states only have a “marginal impact” on the air quality of Delhi.

Delhi is suffering from its local pollutants and the prevailing weather conditions are allowing the pollution to accumulate.

“At present, wind speed is slow, which allows the pollutants to get accumulated. Humidity too is still high, which is slightly unfavourable,” SAFAR said.

The average presence of the major pollutant PM2.5 was 240 microgrammes per cubic meter in Delhi – a slight increase from 219 on Tuesday.

Across NCR, Gurugram with an AQI of 345 fell further into the ‘very poor’ category. The AQI was 386 in Ghaziabad, 392 in Greater Noida, and 377 in Noida.

J&K Governor feels democracy is outdated: Chidambaram

November 22, 2018 by Nasheman

Taking umbrage to the sudden dissolution of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, former Union Minister and Congress veteran P. Chidambaram on Thursday claimed that for BJP-appointed Governor Satya Pal Malik, parliamentary democracy was “outdated”.

A day after Malik’s dramatic move dissolving the House shortly after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), National Conference and the Congress came together to stake claim to form a government, Chidambaram took to Twitter to express his outrage.

“As long as no one staked a claim to form government, Jammu and Kashmir Governor was happy to keep Assembly under suspension. The moment someone staked a claim, he dissolved the Assembly.

“Parliamentary democracy standing on its head,” said the former Union Finance Minister.

“The Westminster model of democracy is outdated. Like in all other matters, it is the Gujarat model that has appealed to the J&K Governor,” said Chidambaram.

Besides, both National Conference’ Omar Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, have also questioned the decision.

Ranji Trophy: Shami exceeds BCCI brief, bowls more than 15 overs

November 22, 2018 by Nasheman

Australia-bound India pacer Mohammed Shami on Wednesday courted controversy by bowling more than his stipulated 15 overs in Bengal’s Group B Ranji Trophy tie against Kerala at the Eden Gardens here.

An integral part of India’s Test setup, Shami was asked by the BCCI to play the ongoing Ranji Trophy match against Kerala on the condition that he would bowl 15-17 overs per innings.

On Wednesday, Shami rolled his arms for 26 overs in the first innings.

“When you are playing a match for your state, the important thing is to fulfil your responsibility,” said Shami returning with 26-3-100-3 at the end of day 2.

“I was also feeling well and had no discomfort. The wicket was also doing well so I continued as long as I could… I decided on my own,” added Shami, who is India’s highest wicket-taker in Tests this year.

Shami said it was best to bowl in a match than in practice.

“It was better to bowl for your team and state rather than practising somewhere else… The more you bowl here the better it will help in Australia. It was a good preparation. For me bowling in a match is the best preparation. I prefer that any day.”

“I was feeling well to bowl at home after a long time. All my friends were here. It was after a long time I could play with my team,” Shami added.

Shami is the leading Indian wicket taker in Tests this year with 33 wickets in nine games.

Talking about his preparation for the Test series beginning next month Down Under, he said, “I’ve prepared well, had good training and match preparation. I’ve a practice match there. I will be ready for the Tests.”

Bengal coach Sairaj Bahutule also played down the issue.

“He was absolutely willing to bowl so he continued. Nobody put pressure on him,” Bahutule said.

November 20, 2018 by Nasheman

A court on Tuesday awarded death penalty to a man and life imprisonment to another after holding them guilty of murder in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Additional Sessions Judge Ajay Pandey awarded the death penalty to Yashpal Singh and sentenced Naresh Sherawat to life imprisonment.

The prosecution demanded death penalty to the two, saying it was the rarest of rare case. But the defence counsel pleaded for leniency.

Last week, the court convicted Sherawat and Yashpal Singh for murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons.

Sherawat and Yashpal Singh were accused of killing Hardev Singh and Avtar Singh in Mahipalpur area of south Delhi during the riots that followed the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

On a complaint by the victim’s brother Santokh Singh, the police lodged a case. But in 1994, the police wanted to close the case citing lack of evidence. The case was reopened by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

He said that such acts are “not acceptable” and the person who has been arrested for attacking the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Convener should be thoroughly interrogated.

Punjab SIT to question actor Akshay Kumar on Wednesday

November 20, 2018 by Nasheman

A special investigation team (SIT) of the Punjab Police, which is investigating the incidents of sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib and the subsequent firing on protesters in 2015, is likely to question Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar here on Wednesday in connection with an alleged deal mediated by the actor between controversial godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

The Punjab Police sources said that Kumar had moved a request that he be allowed to meet the SIT officials in Chandigarh instead of Amritsar, where he had been originally summoned.

Kumar will be questioned regarding his alleged role in brokering a deal between the controversial godman, who was later convicted of rape and sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment and Sukhbir Badal in Mumbai in 2015 just days before the release of a film of the godman.

Kumar has denied that he arranged any such meeting or had any role in brokering the deal.

On his part, Badal said on Tuesday that he had never met Akshay Kumar outside Punjab. “I have never met Akshay Kumar outside Punjab,” Badal said.

Sukhbir Badal was questioned by the SIT here at the Punjab Police headquarters on Monday. He termed the questioning as a sham and alleged that the Congress government in Punjab led by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh was indulging in political vendetta.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was on November 16 questioned by the SIT headed by additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Pramod Kumar and Inspector General Kunwar Vijay Pratap.

The senior Badal said that he told the SIT that he had not ordered firing on Sikh protesters agitating against the sacrilege incidents in October 2015.

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had said earlier that his government had no role in the summoning of the Badals and actor Akshay Kumar by the SIT.

The SIT was set up by the Amarinder government in September this year to probe cases of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and the firing ordered on those protesting against the sacrilege cases in October 2015 when the Akali Dal-BJP alliance government headed by Parkash Singh Badal was in power in the state.

Two persons were killed in the police firing in Behbal Kalan village near Kotkapura town in Faridkot district.

ICC dismisses PCB’s case against BCCI

November 20, 2018 by Nasheman

In a setback to the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) demands for monetary compensation from the BCCI for deciding against playing bilateral cricket, the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Dispute Panel on Tuesday dismissed the PCB’s case.

The panel was chaired by Michael Beloff QC, an English barrister and a member of Blackstone Chambers, and included Jan Paulsson and Annabelle Bennett. The hearings took place in Dubai from October 1-3.

“Following a three-day hearing and having considered detailed oral and written submissions, the Dispute Panel has dismissed the PCB’s claim against the BCCI,” the ICC said in a release.

The PCB had sought compensation to the tune of $70 million from BCCI for not honouring the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two boards in 2014 to play six bilateral series over the course of eight years between 2015 and 2023.

The ICC, earlier, had said the decision of the panel will be final and cannot be challenged.
