Congress-JD-S alliance in Karnataka has turned out beneficial: Chidambaram

New Delhi Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday said the lesson of the 4-1 victory in the parliamentary and assembly bypolls in Karnataka is that the alliance has turned out beneficial.

“The 4-1 win in the Karnataka bye-elections is similar to the Test series of Indian cricket team led by Virat Kohli. Lesson to be learnt: Alliance has turned out to be beneficial,” Chidambaram tweeted.

The senior Congress leader’s remarks came after the Karnataka ruling coalition Janata Dal-Secular and Congress took lead in two seats each in the vote count for the three Lok Sabha and two assembly seats.

According to early trends at 9.45 a.m., the Bharatiya Janata Party was expected to hold on to its Shimoga seat but might lose the Bellary seat where its trailing by over one lakh votes.

The JD-S was leading over BJP in Ramanagara and Mandya, while the Congress was leading in Jamkhandi and Bellary.

Counting of votes began at 8 a.m. in Bellary (reserved), Mandya and Shimoga Lok Sabha seats and Jamkhandi and Ramanagara assembly seats for the polling held on November 3.

Prior to the bypolls, the JD-S held Ramanagara and Mandya seats, while the Congress Jamakhandi and the BJP Bellary and Shimoga.

Delhi’s air quality improves to ‘severe’

New Delhi The national capital and its surroundings continued to suffer toxic air quality on Tuesday with only a slight improvement from “emergency” to “severe” category.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi at 9 a.m. was recorded 403, on a scale of 0 to 500. The AQI on Monday at the same time was 415, which had gradually worsened to 435 by evening.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the shallow fog in the morning mixed with the pollutants that lead to smog.

On Tuesday, there was a slight drop in moisture, which was good for dispersion of pollutants.

The pollution monitoring agencies said that the extra load of pollutants coming from stubble burning from neighbouring states also registered a slight drop, leading to slight improvement — though still in the danger zone.

“The condition is expected to prevail till Diwali,” said the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR)

However, it might improve if no additional emission from firecrackers add to Delhi’s air, it added.

The average volume of particle pollutant PM2.5 , or particles with a diametre less than 2.5 mm, was 257 microgrammes per cubic meters, considered “severe”.

The safe limit of PM2.5 and PM10 is under-60 and 100 units, as per national standards. The international standards are 25 units for PM2.5 and 50 units for PM10.

JD-S, Congress lead in Karnataka bypolls

Bengaluru Karnataka’s ruling coalition Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and Congress are leading in two seats each in the vote count for the three Lok Sabha and two assembly seats, a poll official said.

According to early trends at 9.45 a.m., the Bharatiya Janata Party was expected to hold on to its Shimoga seat but might lose the Bellary seat where its trailing by over one lakh votes.

The JD-S was leading over BJP in Ramanagara and Mandya, while the Congress was leading in Jamkhandi and Bellary, an Election Commission official told IANS here.

Counting of votes began at 8 a.m. in Bellary (reserved), Mandya and Shimoga Lok Sabha seats and Jamkhandi and Ramanagara assembly seats for the polling held on November 3.

Prior to the bypolls, the JD-S held Ramanagara and Mandya seats, while the Congress Jamakhandi and the BJP Bellary and Shimoga.

Congress candidate for Jamkhandi assembly seat Anand Siddu Nyamagouda was leading over BJP’s Shrikant Kulkarni by a margin of 16,516 votes, as per leads from EC website after nearly two hours.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s wife Anitha Kumaraswamy of JD-S was leading in Ramanagara assembly segment over BJP’s L.A. Chandrashekar by a comdfortable margin of 34,995 votes.

Chandrashekar had quit the BJP and re-joined the Congress just days ahead of the bypolls. His nomination, however, remained since he withdrew from the bye-election after the final date of withdrawal.

While, Congress’ V.S. Ugrappa from Bellary Lok Sabha (reserved) seat was leading over BJP’s J.Shantha by a margin of 1,00,723 votes.

From the Mandya Lok Sabha seat, L. Shivarame Gowda of the JD-S was leading over BJP’s Siddaramaiah by a margin of 38,920 votes.

In Shimoga parliamentary seat, BJP’s state unit president and former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s son B.Y. Raghavendra was leading over JD-S nominee Madhu Bangarappa, the son of former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa, by a margin of 9,665 votes, the EC trends showed.

The vote counts were being conducted in the engineering and government colleges that have been taken up as counting centres.

Around 66 per cent of the 54.5 lakh electorate have voted in the five bypolls.

Watershed Moment For Women’s Rights In India?

A range of cases involving women’s rights are pending with the Supreme Court, from entry of women into the Sabarimala temple to adultery. In the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament, bills like the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, the Transgender Persons( Protection of Rights) Bill are yet to be discussed.

Do all of this point to a watershed moment for women’s rights in India?

While legislation and rule of law start the process, it takes an inordinate amount of time to trickle down and create real social change in the existing system, according to Senior Advocate Karuna Nundy.

The country’s courts are a good starting point, though, says Senior Advocate Indira Jaising, adding that the apex court is handling these cases with the seriousness they deserve. And while most decisions on women’s empowerment decisions currently lie with an overwhelmingly male majority panel, Jaising insists a 50:50 gender ratio is a prerequisite to bringing about fair change.

Gambhir steps down as Delhi Ranji skipper

Cricketer Gautam Gambhir on Monday stepped down as the captain of the Delhi Ranji team and said it was time for the young guns to lead the squad.

The left-handed batsman took to Twitter to announce his decision and said: “Time to pass the captaincy baton to youngsters, hence have requested the DDCA selectors not to consider me for that role. I will be in the background helping the new leader to win games.”

Reportedly, middle-order batsman Nitish Rana, 24, would be appointed as the new captain for the ongoing 2018-19 Ranji season after Gambhir’s decision .

Delhi is slated to face Himachal Pradesh on November 12 at their homeground Feroz Shah Kotla.

Earlier in the year, Gambhir had also stepped down from captaincy of Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Delhi Daredevils and warmed the bench in the last eight games of the tournament.

Gold sales average on ‘dhanteras’ in Mumbai

Keeping in tune with expectations, gold sales have notched a sharp fall of 40 per cent this year compared to 2017 Diwali owing to high prices and overall negative market sentiments, a leading retailers body said on Monday.

“Though there are crowds, people are not buying as per the expectations, but merely making token purchases of 5-10-20 gm to mark the auspicious day. Mostly gold coins/guineas are moving while small, medium or big articles of jewellery are virtually ignored,” said Mumbai Jewellers Federation President Rakesh Shetty.

However, another industry body, the All India Gem & Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), said that contrary to expectations, gold and jewellery sales have zoomed during ‘dhanteras’ and the positive trend was expected to continue till the upcoming winter wedding season.

“The past three days have surprised even the industry. People are literally out in droves in shops and showrooms to make gold purchases. Since two months, till last Saturday, the market situation was extremely gloomy,” said GJC President Nitin Khandelwal.

However, this time the purchases – mostly in small jewelleries of 10 gm (1 tola) or multiples – is for end-user purposes and not as investments, with the prospects of gold prices shooting up with the likely increase in US dollar rates soon.

“Our expectation is that USD may touch around Rs 85 in the near future given the current international scenario. Along with that, gold itself would shoot up to Rs 45,000 per tola (10 gm). Plus, the upcoming winter marriage season is also driving up the sales,” Khandelwal told IANS.

The market sentiments are positive despite the gold rates going up from Rs 30,000/tola in ‘dhanteras’ 2017 to around Rs 31,500/tola this year, which portends good for the industry.

Adopting a cautionery stand, World Gold Council Managing Director P.R. Somasundaram said that though the feedback from the industry suggests good footfalls, “the demand could be moderate” in view of the recent sharp increase in gold prices.

“Organised players seem better places, a trend that has become evident in recent years after a spate of transparency measures. Digital wallets and online buying also seem to be growing in popularity, though they are relatively small,” Somasundaram said.

Teen sisters murdered in Pakistan honour killing

Two teenaged sisters were strangled to death by their cousins for allegedly meeting boys in a fresh case of honour killing in Pakistan, the police said on Monday.

Bisma Bibi, 19, and Naheed Bibi, 17, were killed by their two cousins on Sunday night when they returned home after meeting the two boys, said Jamaldin Wali, police spokesperson for Sadiqabad district where the crime took place.

The two accused were waiting for the sisters near their house and later strangled them.

“They died on the spot,” Wali told Efe news, adding that it was a case of honour killing and that the accused had been arrested.

Honour crimes are very common in South Asia and often involve men killing women they believe had brought disrepute to the family name.

So far this year, 938 women and men have been victims of honour killings in the country, according to the non-profit Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

The non-profit had also warned that unofficially the numbers might be much higher.

In 2016, the Pakistani government had passed a law prohibiting pardons to relatives of victims in such crimes, a legal loophole through which many men would earlier escape punishment after killing a woman, generally a sister or a wife.

However, human rights groups and activists warn that the law has been mostly ineffective in curbing these crimes.

India sees record growth in online sale, electronics lead

India saw a 29 per cent increase in online festive sales in September, setting a year-over-year (YoY) record, Oath, a Verizon subsidiary, announced on Monday.

At 42 per cent, electronics led as the top-selling category online, with smartphones and headphones as top buys. Popular smartphone brands in India included Redmi, MI, Samsung and MOTO.

According to the report, the online festive shoppers are predominantly male (79 per cent).

“The huge volume of data points across our brands gives us a comprehensive understanding of consumers in India and their behaviour,” Erin Chao, Head of Platforms, APAC, Oath, said in a statement.

“These deep insights in turn are helping our advertisers to make sense of audiences’ preferences and market trends at a very strategic level, to put in place data-driven marketing strategies during this crucial season,” Chao added.

Tech-savvy millennials between 25-34 tend to shop more online during festivals, said the report.

The findings were based on data points across these brands and an in-depth understanding of consumer behaviour based on content consumption by users.

Pregnant woman donates brain dead husband’s organs

An eight-month-old pregnant woman took a noble decision of donating her husband’s organs after he was declared brain dead by the doctors here.

Sharath Babu (30) a resident of Yalahanka had sustained severe head injury after his bike collided with a car near BSF camp near Yelahanka on Ballary Road on Wednesday, October 31. Though he was rushed to the hospital immediately, he failed to respond to the given treatment post which the doctors declared him brain dead on Sunday, November 4.

After doctors declared Sharath Babu as brain dead, his wife Chandana, though suffering the pain of losing her husband thought of the greater good and in a noble act decided to donate her husband’s eyes, kidneys and heart. Sharath’s mortal remains were handed over to his bereaving family after the organs were harvested from him.

Man falls for WhatsApp ad and tries to sell kidney for Rs 1.6 crore.

At some point of time in our lives, especially in our younger days, we have all joked about selling our kidney because we were broke or wanted to buy something which was completely out of budget.

But seems like this Bangalore man took it very seriously when he actually tried to sell his kidney for Rs 1.6 crore. He claimed that he had seen an internet ad that a famous senior doctor from Columbia Asia Hospital in Bangalore had posted.

The man who has been identified as MB Somashekar claimed that Dr Arun Wesley David, the HoD of Renal Transplant Surgery at the hospital had posted this ad on a website he doesn’t remember the name of.

Since Somashekar, a stenographer by profession, was in dire need of money, he decided to sell one of his kidneys. He apparently even talked to someone impersonating as Dr David and the impersonator promised him a sum of Rs 1.6 crores for his kidney.

Somashekar then approached Aprajita Dhal, transplant coordinator at the hospital, and told her that he came to know about Dr Arun Wesley David through a website and he had had a Whatsapp conversation with him.

According to a report in a leading newspaper, an officer investigating the case said:

“Somashekar is said to have shown Dhal WhatsApp messages and subsequent conversations on various dates where Dr David’ allegedly had been in contact with him about the sale of his kidney. However, he could not remember the name of the website or its URL.”

The impersonator had asked Somashekar to go to the hospital with his Aadhaar card and other identity proofs so that the formalities for the sale could be completed.

The hospital was in for a rude shock when this man walked in and made these claims. After the incident, Dr David said that the number used in the Whatsapp conversations wasn’t his and someone was impersonating him to fool people. He filed a legal complaint regarding the same.

The Cyber Police has registered a case under section 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act of 2000 and 120B (criminal conspiracy) 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 420 (cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) along with other sections of the IPC.

This incident brings to light the sorry state of affairs in our country and how one needs to be careful and vigilant at all times lest they be fooled.
