At least five people died after a fire broke out in a 16-storey residential building in suburban Mumbai’s Tilak Nagar area Thursday evening. Two others, including a fireman, were also injured in the fire that started at the 14th floor of Sargam Society (G+16) at building number 35, B Wing, in Chembur, near Ganesh Garden, at 7.50 pm Thursday. The fire has been doused, and cooling down operation is underway.

According to the disaster management cell, the fire was reported on the 10th floor of the 16-storey building and later spread to other floors. Prima facie fire brigade officials are suspecting short circuit as the cause of the fire. Officials said initially, the fire was minor but later it escalated to a Level 3 (major) fire as it spread.

The fire brigade sent six fire engines and six water tankers to the spot. Local corporator Shusham Sawant said, “The fire fighting system of the building was not working properly. Also, double parking (by residents) on the road delayed fire brigade vehicles from reaching the spot.”

Four people were earlier admitted to the nearby Rajawadi Hospital, where three, including two women, were declared brought dead by the hospital authorities. The deceased were identified as Sunita Joshi, Bhalchandra Joshi, both 72, and Suman Shrinivas Joshi, 83.

A search and rescue operation by the Mumbai Fire Brigade is underway, said the official from the Disaster Management Unit of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Karnataka and Tamilnadu not ‘Indo-Pak enemies’ : HDK

December 28, 2018 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: HD Kumaraswamy on Thursday said Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were not “Indo-Pak enemies” and the states can resolve the matter of proposed Mekedatu project on Cauvery River amicably.

The centre is expected to call a joint meeting of the heads of both the states in the next 10-15 days to iron out the differences.

Kumaraswamy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday and thanked the centre for giving clearance to the state government for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Mekedatu project.

The two main Tamil Nadu parties– AIADMK and DMK– have been opposing the project and disrupting proceedings in both Houses of Parliament for more than a week.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned Thursday over the issue.

To counter the protest, Karnataka lawmakers, cutting across the party lines, staged an agitation in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue inside the parliament complex.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Prime Minister, Kumaraswamy said, “Yesterday, I had requested Union Water Resources Minister (Nitin Gadkari) to convene a meeting of chief ministers of the two states to resolve the matter. He agreed and directed his officials to fix a meeting”.

“In another 10-15 days, he may call a meeting,” the Karnataka chief minister appealed Tamil Nadu to resolve the matter amicably instead of fighting in courts.

“The fight is going on. This will not be solved legally. We have to resolve it amicably. Facing a legal battle is different. We are not Indo-Pak enemies, we are brothers. We have to discuss and resolve,” he said.

The JD(S) leader added the proposed Mekedatu project would be more beneficial to Tamil Nadu and requested the AIADMK and DMK not to make the issue a political one.

“I request political parties not to make it a political issue. We can sit and solve. It is not a big issue,” he said, adding the Karnataka government was abiding with the Supreme Court order.

“The state (Karnataka) is proposing to construct the Mekedatu dam to ensure that surplus water does not flow from Cauvery into the sea. Please accept our project,” Kumaraswamy said.

Over 100 students from Chikkaballapura district in Karnataka were hospitalised with what doctors have diagnosed as food poisoning, after eating food from their hostel mess.

Around 120 resident students of Chikkaballapura BGS Hostel were taken to the government hospital on Thursday following complaints of stomach pain, nausea, and loose stools after having eaten food served at the hostel mess.

“All the students are recovering well. They are being treated with IV fluids and oral rehydration solution (ORS) to control the dehydration, all are responding well,” said District Health Officer Dr Ravi Shankar to media. “As of now, a team of officials have been sent to the hostel and are taking samples of the water and food. These will be analysed and we will be able to confirm what caused so many students to fall ill.”

He further stated that the doctors and officials suspect that the food which was served to the students may have gone bad, as a result of which all the students fell ill.

“We feel that there may have been some preformed toxins on the food, which would have resulted in the food becoming spoiled, as a result of which all the students have fallen ill,” he said.

In a similar incident earlier this month, nearly 80 students of the Veterinary Science Diploma College in Tiptur taluk of Tumkur district, were taken ill after eating breakfast served at the college mess. They were subsequently taken to the government hospital in Tiptur and diagnosed with food poisoning and were treated. While most were treated on an outpatient basis and sent home, a few were admitted for treatment.

Students arrested for ragging and assaulting for dalit student

December 28, 2018 by Nasheman

The Dalit student from ESIC Medical alleges that on Christmas Eve, the inebriated seniors assaulted him in his room and later stripped him naked and shaved his hair off.

A horrifying case of alleged casteism and ragging has come to light at a medical college in Bengaluru. A 19-year-old freshman was allegedly assaulted and insulted by men belonging to upper castes in Bengaluru’s Rajajinagar.

On the night of December 24, Saurabh Tupe (19), a resident of the ESIC Medical College Boys Hostel, was fast asleep. His seniors – Karan Sharma, Indrajeet, Rahul Jha, Shubhav and Gautam were out drinking as it was Christmas Eve, and later allegedly barged into his room while he was asleep. “I woke up when someone slapped me across the face. It was Karan. He held the collar of my shirt and dragged me out of bed. My seniors then dragged me to the hostel’s terrace and began hurling abuses at me. They called me a child molester and words that I could not even repeat,” Saurabh says.

Karan and his friends allegedly forced Saurabh to strip down. He was made to stand naked on the terrace while Karan shaved off the back of his head, he alleges. “They shaved a part of my hair. They made me strip and they were laughing at my body and passing really bad comments about me. After Karan shaved my head, he told me that Dalits are not meant to study MBBS and become doctors. He said that people of my kind were only meant to do menial jobs for the upper caste,” Saurabh added.

Karan and his friends soon left Saurabh on the terrace. He rushed to his room and began mulling over filing a complaint with the college regarding the torture he was facing at the hands of Karan. “In the morning, they came to my room again and threatened to kill me if I spoke about the incident to anyone. I was so worried but I finally decided to tell the police. On December 25 at around 10 pm, I went to the Rajajinagar Police Station and filed a complaint,” Saurabh said.

“Ever since I joined this college in June this year, my seniors (the accused) were always ragging me. Initially they made fun of all juniors and I thought it was normal. But after a few days I realized that they were only targeting me. And it was always about the fact that I am a Dalit,” Saurabh told TNM. Over the past few months, Saurabh alleges that Karan, Rahul, Shubhav, Gautam and Indrajeet, who were also residents of the hostel, would rag him and hurl casteist slurs at him.

The police arrested Karan, Indrajeet, Rahul, Shubhav and Gautam on Thursday night. The five accused were produced before the court on Friday and were remanded to judicial custody.

The Rajajinagar Police registered an FIR under sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 34 (common intention of the IPC), section 116 (penalty for ragging) of the Karnataka Education ACT 1983, section 3(1)(x) (intentionally insults or intimidates with intent to humiliate a member of a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe in any place within public view) of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Karnataka MPs protest outside Parliament : Mekedatu Project

December 28, 2018 by Nasheman

“Our protest is also to counter Tamil Nadu MPs protest, who have been stalling the functioning of Parliament and are strongly opposing the Mekedatu project,” said BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje.

MPs from Karnataka staged a protest outside the Parliament in New Delhi on Thursday demanding the implementation of the controversial Mekedatu project. The MPs from across party lines held placards near the Mahatma Gandhi statue and demanded that the project be executed at the earliest.

Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs demanded that the Centre grant permission for the early implementation. The protest was organised to show the unity among all political parties in Karnataka in favour of the project. “Our protest is also to counter Tamil Nadu MPs protest, who have been stalling the functioning of Parliament and are strongly opposing the Mekedatu project,” said BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje.

Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy met Union Minister for Water Resources Nitin Gadkari to discuss the early implementation of the project on Wednesday. “In the meeting, Gadkari said he was convinced that the Mekedatu project will benefit Tamil Nadu. The minister also assured that he will direct his officials to fix a meeting of Chief Ministers of the two states at the earliest,” the Chief Minister’s office said.

“The project will help conserve excess water for our state. We need it for the people,” said PC Mohan, BJP MP for Bengaluru Central.

On Wednesday, the Union government said that a meeting of the heads of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka would be called soon. Nitin Gadkari is slated to discuss the merits of the projects with the representatives of the two states and also hear their grievances, sources in the CMO said.

Karnataka has proposed the construction of a balancing reservoir along River Cauvery river at Mekedatu to conserve excess water in the Cauvery river basin. The government plans to use the water to meet the drinking water requirements of Bengaluru, Ramanagara and Channapattana, and also generate electricity.  In November, the Central Water Commission gave Karnataka the green signal to prepare a Detailed Project Report.

However, the lower riparian state of Tamil Nadu is opposing the project saying that the Mekedatu project would curtail water supply from Cauvery river. They also argue that it is against the Supreme Court’s February verdict. Earlier this month, Tamil Nadu moved a contempt petition in the apex court against the CWC, Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited and Karnataka Water Resource Minister DK Shivakumar for ‘wilful disobedience’ of the SC order on Cauvery water sharing.

New year gift presented for Bengaluru police

December 28, 2018 by Nasheman

The Karnataka government on Wednesday presented the Bengaluru City Police with another 911 bikes to keep a check on criminal activities and to assist with increased patrolling, in addition to the existing 272 Maruti Suzuki Ertigas operating as Hoysala vehicles. The TVS Apache RTR-160 bikes that have been presented to the city police have cost the exchequer a sum of Rs 7.11 crore.

As opposed to cars, bikes can attend to crime scenes and access narrow roads faster.

Speaking at the event held in Vidhana Soudha, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said, “I hope the bikes will help the police in operating swiftly and will enhance their response to distress calls and chasing criminals, especially chain-snatchers,” adding that CCTV surveillance in the city will also be increased gradually.

He added, “For the police to perform their duties, there should be good infrastructure and facilities to support them. Many reports have been submitted in request of some development for the police department. Therefore, as a New Year gift, 911 motorbikes were given to them so that they can reach the scene of the crime on time and also avoid small incidents from turning into a big law and order situation.”

A report in The New Indian Express said that these vehicles will be redistributed to 108 local jurisdictional police stations, 44 Traffic Police stations, two women police stations and other departments like the CIty Armed Reserve and Intelligence Division.

A report in October had said that these vehicles were to be inducted for replacing some of the existing yellow Bajaj Pulsar bikes with cheetah-like spots which were introduced 16 years ago. Although the bikes had been sanctioned at that time, their induction took time since they had to be fitted with mikes, sirens and other accessories like walkie-talkies.

Senior police officials said that with this, each police station will get five bikes. While police stations with greater jurisdictional area will get six bikes, relatively smaller ones will get four bikes.

India, Bhutan review development of hydroelectric projects

December 28, 2018 by Nasheman

Image result for India, Bhutan review development of hydroelectric projects

Nasheman News : India and Bhutan on Friday reviewed the progress of hydroelectric projects in the Himalayan kingdom during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bhutanese counterpart Lotay Tshering here.

“Development of hydrolectric projects is an important part of the long history of India’s aid to Bhutan,” Modi said in a joint address to the media with Tshering after the meeting.

“Today we reviewed our aid for all related projects in this important sector,” he said.

India is a leading development aid partner for Bhutan. There are a number of institutional mechanisms between India and Bhutan in areas like security, border management, trade, economy, hydroelectricity, development cooperation and water resources.

New Delhi has set up three hydroelectric projects in Bhutan with a total capacity of 1,416 MW, which are operational. About three-fourth of the power generated is exported to India and the rest is used for domestic consumption.

Stating that space science is a new area of cooperation between the two countries, Modi said that a ground station will be soon be developed in Bhutan by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to the reap the benefits of the South Asian Satellite.

He also expressed happiness at Tshering conveying him the news that Bhutan will soon launch the RuPay cards.

Appreciating Tshering’s vision of “Narrowing the Gap” on ties between India and Bhutan, Modi said that it complements India’s Neighbourhood First Policy.

On his part, Tshering said that the main aim of his visit, taking place on the golden-jubilee year of India-Bhutan diplomatic ties, is to take the bilateral relationship to much greater heights.

He also said that there are “many, many miles to go” India’s aid for development of hydroelectric projects in Bhutan.

He invited Modi to visit Bhutan at the earliest.

Earlier, Tshering was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also called on the visiting dignitary.

Tshering arrived here on Friday on a three-day visit to India, his first official trip abroad after assuming office in October.

Tshering’s Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) party, formed in 2013, won 30 of the 47 National Assembly seats in the elections in the Himalayan kingdom held in October.

The country of 800,000 people, located between India and China, has chosen a different party to rule at each election since the end of absolute monarchy in 2008.

Kumaraswamy dispels rumours of rift with Congress, says will fight Lok Sabha polls together

December 28, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Thursday dismissed reports of a rift between coalition partners Congress and the JD-s, saying the two parties would contest the next year’s Lok Sabha elections together.

He added there had been no discussions on the seat-sharing arrangement between the two sides so far.

Kumaraswamy’s remarks come amid reports of a rift between the two parties who share power in Karnataka with the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) hinting at going it alone in the next year’s general election.

Talking to reporters here on his two-day visit to the national capital, the Karnataka Chief Minister said while there had been no talks of seat-sharing with the Congress, the alliance of the two parties was strong and would continue.

“There has been no discussion on seat-sharing with the Congress so far. When the discussion has not taken place, how can there be any question of a fight?” he said.

Earlier, the Bharatiya Janata Party claimed that it would form the new government in Karnataka by next week as it was in talks with 15 disgruntled MLAs from the ruling coalition.

“The alliance is strong and we will contest the Lok Sabha polls together,” Kumaraswamy said.

The Karnataka Chief Minister met Water Minister and Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Coal and Railways Minister Piyush Goyal and discussed various issues related to development of the state.

He also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the drought situation and various irrigation projects for the state.

Where’s money for Modi’s farmers’ relief plan: Chidambaram

December 28, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Amid speculations that the Narendra Modi government could announce a major relief plan for farmers ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, former Union Minister and Congress veteran P. Chidambaram on Thursday asked how the government will fund the new plan.

On a day when Modi accused the Congress of “deceiving farmers” with promises of loan waivers, Chidambaram took to Twitter to ridicule the Prime Minister’s mega relief plan for farmers.

“Prime Minister says that Congress governments’ loan waivers are only to win elections. So, shall we assume that PM’s ‘Farmers’ Relief Plan’ is intended to lose elections?

“Eight months’ revenue collection is less than 50 per cent of target, fiscal deficit is 115 per cent of estimate. Where is the money for the new plan,” asked the former Finance Minister.

“BJP government’s plan will imitate the previous Madhya Pradesh government’s plan of paying the farmer the difference between MSP and market price. Remember, the MP Govt plan brought no relief to the indebted farmers.

“The ‘pay the difference’ plan will help only the farmer who has a marketable surplus. What about the farmer who has no marketable surplus? He is also in debt,” he added.

Chidambaram’s remarks come a day after Modi held consultations with top BJP leaders, including party chief Amit Shah, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh on issues concerning farmers amid indications that agrarian problems could be a factor in the BJP’s ouster from three Hindi heartland states in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

Police claim arrest of prime accused in Bulandshahr violence

December 28, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : The Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday claimed to have arrested the prime accused in the killing of police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh, who was shot dead during mob violence in Bulandshahar earlier this month.

Police sources said the prime accused Prashant Nat was arrested after his identification from a series of mobile phone-made videos of the violence.

The police took Nat and his accomplice to Kalwa for recreating the crime scene. The police said all the accused in the incident were from the Chingrawathi village, of which four are in jail now.

Initially the prime accused was Yogesh Raj, the Bajrang Dal district convenor, but he is still at large.

A police inspector and another local Sumit Gautam were killed in the mob violence that broke out in Bulandshahr on December 3 after cattle carcasses were found in a field.

Right-wing groups demanded action against some locals and blocked traffic on a main road after which a police team rushed to the scene, only to be attacked by an infuriated crowd.

Stones were thrown at them, and later police officer Subodh Kumar Singh was shot dead. The Bulandshahr SSP was shifted after the violence and some policemen were also transferred.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had first called the violence an “incident” but later said that it was a big political conspiracy.
