1st Test: Poor batting leaves India struggling on opening day

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Cheteshwar Pujara fought his way to a gritty century even as familiar batting woes on foreign soil left India struggling at 250/9 on the opening day of the first cricket Test against Australia here on Thursday.

Pujara posted a wonderfully patient and composed 123 off 246 deliveries before being run out off the last ball of the day. His stay in the middle was studded with seven boundaries and two hits into the stands.

Pacer Mohammad Shami (6) was at the crease when umpires dislodged the bails for the day.

The visitors have only themselves to blame for their troubles as most of their top order batsmen virtually threw away their wickets by going after deliveries which they should have left alone.

Pujara was the only saving grace for the famed Indian batting line-up, which has come into this series with a big reputation.

Despite the regular fall of wickets at the other end, the Saurashtra batsman continued to bat patiently, carefully avoiding the big shots and playing the ball along the ground.

With half their line-up back in the pavilion even before the score had crossed the 100-run mark, it seemed at one point that the Indians would find it hard-pressed to even put 200 on the board.

But Pujara’s grit and determination and his crucial partnerships with Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin restored some respectability to the Indian total.

The Australians bowled with discipline and aggression which saw Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon bag two wickets each.

After a poor first session which saw the fall of four wickets, Pujara and Rohit Sharma tried to stem the rot with a partnership of 45 runs.

However, spinner Nathan Lyon took two wickets during the post lunch session to plunge the Indians into deeper trouble.

Rohit, who scored 37 runs off 61 balls, seemed to be in good touch and set for a big score.

But attempted big shot off Lyon’s bowling handed an easy catch to Marcus Harris.

Rishabh Pant displayed the same tendency to play in the air and go after deliveries outside the off-stump which his more experienced teammates had shown further up the order. It was thus only a matter of time before he also gifted his wicket away.

Almost inevitably, Lyon delivered another blow shortly before tea when Pant edged one to Australian captain Tim Paine behind the stumps.

Asnwin and Pujara then stitched together a stand of 62 runs before the former was dismissed by Cummins.

Earlier, a disciplined bowling attack by Australia left India struggling at 56/4 at lunch.

Opting to bat, the visitors were off to a disastrous start as opener Lokesh Rahul’s (2) thick edge was superbly taken by Aaron Finch at third slip off a Hazlewood delivery with just three runs on board.

Soon, Murali Vijay (11) also followed his partner after falling in the seventh over, leaving India at 15/2.

With the addition of just four runs in the visitor’s scorecard, pacer Pat Cummins gave a huge blow to India after packing back skipper Virat Kohli (3), thanks to a stunning catch by Usman Khawaja at gully.

Pujara and Rahane (13) then tried to put things back in control, adding 22 runs for the fourth wicket however, Hazlewood struck again in the the 21st over to dismiss the latter.

Incoming batsman Rohit Sharma and Pujara then played some sensible cricket as India crept past the 50-run mark.

Brief scores:

India: 250/9 (Cheteshwar Pujara 123, Rohit Sharma 37; Mitchell Starc 2/63, Josh Hazlewood 2/52, Pat Cummins 2/49, Nathan Lyon 2/83) vs Australia on Day 1.

Delhi girl kills self, blames ‘tormentor’ teacher

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Relentless humiliation and rebuke from her science teacher over the last few months forced a Class 7 student here to commit suicide by hanging herself, police said on Thursday.

Daisy Rathore, 12, who hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her home on December 1, wrote the teacher’s name on her palms and hands and also left behind a note stating the reason for her extreme step.

“We are waiting for the autopsy report and recording statements of the victim’s friends and classmates. We will take strict action against the culprit,” Joint Commissioner of Police Madhup Tiwari told IANS.

“On her palms and hands she wrote that she did not want to go to school any more. She apologized to her mother and grandmother and said she was going to meet Lord Krishna,” he added.

Daisy Rathore was a student of Gyan Mandir Public School at Naraina Vihar.

She was last seen alive by her mother Kamal Rathore, before leaving for the Tis Hazari Court where she is an advocate.

Around 4 p.m., when the mother returned, she discovered her daughter’s lifeless body, a police officer said. A suicide note was also recovered.

Tiwari said: “On Wednesday, the victim’s mother visited the Inderpuri police station and told the officers that her daughter had on November 30 gone on a school trip. The next day some students of Class 6 linked the girl with a boy.

“When her teachers came to know about this, they allegedly rebuked her,” the officer added.

A resident of Inderpuri, the teenager had complained of relentless humiliation by her science teacher.

“My daughter complained that the teacher rebuked her every day. The same teacher rebuked and humiliated her on Friday for 10 minutes in the biology lab. She cried in the school bathroom after the episode,” Kamal Rathore told IANS.

“She had been insisting that I change her school but I did not know the extent of the crisis. I had not realised that she would commit suicide,” she said.

The mother broke down while speaking to reporters on Thursday.

“I was planning to take her out on her birthday on December 20. But she has left us. I should have changed her school,” rued Kamal Rathore, whose husband passed away some eight years ago.

Apparently, the tormented student had told some of her friends that she would commit suicide and would not meet them again.

The school management has set up an internal committee to probe the incident and will submit its report to the Delhi Police.

The Gyan Mandir Public School said in a statement: “We are fully cooperating with the investigation authority. As of now we are not at liberty to disclose any details which may jeopardize the police probe. We stand in solidarity with her family in this difficult time.”

Stage set for polling in Telangana, 2.8 crore can vote

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Over 2.8 crore people are eligible to vote in Telangana which will elect a new Assembly on Friday.

Political fortunes of 1,821 candidates will be decided in 119 constituencies in the first full-fledged election in India’s youngest state.

Election authorities have made elaborate arrangements for a smooth conduct of the polling process in 32,815 polling stations.

A total of 280,747,22 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise. They include 1,41,56,182 men and 1,39,05,811 women. The electorate also include 10,038 service voters and 249 overseas Indian electors.

Serilingampalli constituency in Greater Hyderabad has over 5.75 lakh voters, the highest in the state, while Bhadrachalam in Khammam district has least voters – 1.37 lakh.

According to Telangana’s Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumar, polling will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in 106 constituencies while in 13 Left Wing Extremism affected constituencies polling will conclude at 4 p.m.

Over 50,000 security personnel including 18,860 drafted from neighbouring states and central forces were deployed as part of the massive security arrangements.

As the Communist Party of India-Maoist has given a call for boycott of elections, the police heightened the vigil in areas bordering Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.

Over 1.50 lakh polling personnel were on duty to conduct the polling process. As many as 55,329 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and 39,763 control units will be used.

For the first time, Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) were being installed across the state. After a voter casts his vote on EVM, VVPAT attached to the machine will display for seven seconds the choice made by the voter.

The elections are expected to be a close contest between the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which is contesting all seats on its own, and the Congress-led People’s Front.

The opposition alliance also includes Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Communist Party of India and Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS).

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is contesting all seats on its own, is the third force in some constituencies.

The Bahujan Left Front (BLD) led by the Communist Party of India-Marxist and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are also contesting a majority of the seats.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is contesting eight seats in Hyderabad.

TRS had opted for dissolution of Assembly in September, eight months before its term was to end.

Due to the presence of independents and TRS and Congress rebels in some segments, the contest has become multi-cornered.

Officials said they were keeping a close watch to stop distribution of cash, liquor or gifts among people by political parties or candidates.

Over Rs.110 crore cash and over 5 lakh litres of liquor seized across the state over last one month.

Liquor shops across the state were shut down on Wednesday evening when campaigning ended. They will reopen only after completion of polling. Orders prohibiting bulk SMSs of political nature will also remain in force during the period.

India, China’s coal consumption rise, global emissions may hit record high

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions will rise in 2018 with a new record from fossil fuels and industry for the second consecutive year, a leading scientific study released in this Polish city on Wednesday said, naming India and China among the top 10 emitters for the rise in coal consumption.

The emissions are projected to increase by more than two per cent to a new record, mainly due to sustained growth in oil and gas use, the study said.

The projection by the Global Carbon Project estimates that CO2 emissions will rise a projected 2.7 per cent, with an uncertainty range between 1.8 per cent and 3.7 per cent.

Carbon emissions grew by 1.6 per cent in 2017 after a three year break.

The findings come from the 2018 Global Carbon Budget published by the Global Carbon Project in the journals Nature, Environmental Research Letters and Earth System Science Data.

The announcement comes as world meets in Katowice for the annual UN climate negotiations (COP24).

The 10 biggest emitters were China, the US, India, Russia, Japan, Germany, Iran, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Canada, with the EU28 as a whole ranking third.

Indian emissions, accounting for seven per cent of global emissions, look set to continue their strong growth with about 6.3 per cent (4.3 per cent to 8.3 per cent) in 2018, with growth across all fuels (coal plus 7.1 per cent, oil plus 2.9 per cent and gas plus 6.0 per cent).

Chinese emissions, accounting for 27 per cent of global emissions, look set to grow about 4.7 per cent this year, reaching a new all-time high. Renewed emissions growth in China seemed closely linked to construction activity and economic stimulus.

The rapid growth in low carbon technologies are not yet sufficient to cause global emissions to peak, let alone drive emissions aggressively down as required by the Paris agreement (global warming “well below two degrees Celsius”).

“The 2018 rise in fossil CO2 emissions place us on a trajectory for warming that is currently well beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius,” said lead researcher Corinne Le Quere, director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia.

“It is not enough to support renewables. Fossil energy needs to be phased out and efforts to decarbonise need to be expanded throughout economies.”

This growth in global CO2 emissions puts the goals set out in the Paris Agreement in jeopardy.

Global fossil CO2 emissions (fossil fuels, industry and cement) grew at over three per cent per year in the 2000s, but growth has slowed since 2010, and from 2014 to 2016 emissions remained relatively flat with only a slight increase.

But global energy growth, especially in oil, gas and coal, is effectively outpacing decarbonisation efforts, fuelled by rising coal use and increasing demand for personal transport, freight, aviation and shipping.

“The continued rise in global emissions is of utmost concern. The recent IPCC report on risk of 1.5 degrees warming was a sombre wakeup call even for many of us deep in the science,” said Future Earth’s Executive Director Amy Luers.

Although global coal use is still three per cent lower than its historical high in 2013, it is expected to grow in 2018, driven by growth in energy consumption in China and India.

Oil and gas use have grown almost unabated in the last decade.

Gas use has been pushed up by declines in coal use and increased demand for gas in industry. Oil is used mainly to fuel personal transport, freight, aviation and shipping, and to produce petrochemicals.

“Addressing climate change is this century’s biggest opportunity. It brings a multitude of health and social benefits to people everywhere. We are excited to be part of our local and global community working hard to ensure we bend the curve of rising emissions and reach net zero by 2050,” Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said in a statement to IANS.

Reacting to the Global Carbon Project estimates, published Christian Aid’s International Climate Lead Mohamed Adow told IANS: “All the warm words spoken at the UN climate summit in Poland won’t help prevent climate change.

“The climate does not respond to lofty rhetoric, it responds to carbon dioxide emission reductions.”

He said with droughts, heatwaves, floods and storms causing mayhem across the world in 2018 the fact “emissions are actually increasing this year shows the greater urgency that governments need to show”.

Useless, critical Catholic bishops should be killed: Duterte

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has launched yet another verbal attack against Catholic bishops, calling them useless and saying they should be killed, according to the transcription of one of his speeches released by the presidential office on Thursday.

More than 85 per cent of the country’s population is Catholic.

“These bishops of yours, kill them. These b*****ds are useless. All they do is criticize,” Duterte said in a part tagalog, part English speech in Manila on Wednesday night.

At a later event, he called the Catholic church “the most hypocritical institution in the entire Philippines” and claimed that “90 per cent” of priests were gay, Efe news reported.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) refused to comment.

Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo later defended Duterte’s remarks, saying they should not be taken literally as they had only been used for dramatic effect.

Two weeks ago, the President insulted Catholic bishops and priests, saying Filipinos should not go to church to pay for “idiots”.

Days earlier, Duterte accused Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David — one of his most vocal critics — of stealing church donations. The bishop responded by calling the leader a “very sick man”.

The conflict between Duterte and the Catholic Church goes back to February 2017, when the CBCP criticized the President’s violent anti-drugs campaign, calling it a “reign of terror”.

Duterte retaliated by calling them “s**s of b*****s”.

Karnataka cabinet reshuffle on 22 Dec : HDK

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

File image of Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy . PTI

Ending the suspense, the Congress-JD(S) coalition in Karnataka on Wednesday announced that the HD Kumaraswamy cabinet would be expanded on 22 December. The decision was taken by the coordination committee of the coalition that met under the chairmanship of former chief minister Siddaramaiah.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda were consulted before deciding the date, Siddaramiah told reporters here after the over two-hour-long meeting of the committee. Six members from the Congress and two from JD(S) would be inducted, he said adding it was also decided to appoint MLAs as heads of corporations and boards on the same day.

There has been growing clamour among the MLAs, especially those from the Congress, for expansion of the cabinet at the earliest, with a few openly expressing their discontent over the delay. This will be the second expansion of Kumaraswamy’s ministry, who currently heads the 26-member cabinet. After the first expansion in June, discontent among the Congress ministerial aspirants surfaced, giving birth pangs to the coalition ministry formed in a post-poll pact after the May assembly elections threw up a hung verdict. The cabinet was expected to be expanded in October itself but had been put off.

Siddaramaiah said the plan was to expand the cabinet on 9 December, but as the legislature session commences on 10 December in the northern district of Belagavi, the date had been deferred. It would be expanded a day after the conclusion of the session on 21 December. The former chief minister, who is also the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) said the coordination the committee also decided to appoint a few MLAs from both partner parties as Parliamentary Secretaries to Ministers. Under the agreement reached during the formation of the coalition in May last, the chairmanship of 20 boards and corporations will go to Congress and 10 to JD(S).

Chief Minister Kumaraswamy, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal and JD(S) secretary general Danish Ali were the others who attended the coordination committee meeting. Siddaramaiah said measures for the smooth functioning of the government and the speedy resolution of issues raised by MLAs concerning developmental work in their respective constituencies were also discussed at the meeting.

A few MLAs, especially those from the Congress, have reportedly conveyed their unhappiness to the party leadership about the functioning of the government — against a few JD(S) Ministers, including Kumaraswamys brother and PWD Minister HD Revanna. Rubbishing reports about disgruntled MLAs under the leadership of Satish Jarkiholi of Congress planning to join hands with the BJP, Siddarmaiah pointed to Jarkiholi himself denying them. None of the Congress MLAs will leave the party, and such information was only a speculation in the media, he said. Congress and JD(S) parties are totally intact, BJP is only daydreaming about success through operation lotus, but they will not succeed, it is not possible, their dream will remain a dream, he said. The coalition government was stable and would remain so for its full tenure, Siddaramaiah said as he predicted BJPs defeat in the assembly elections in the five states.

Echoing Siddaramaiah’s statement, JD(S) secretary general Danish Ali said the coalition government would last its full five-year terms. He also termed reports about trouble in the coalition in sections of media as BJP sponsored.
