Maradona better than Messi, says Pele

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Rio de Janeiro Argentine legend Diego Maradona was a better footballer than the country’s modern-day idol Lionel Messi, according to Pele.

Barcelona forward Messi — a five-time winner of the Balon d’Or, awarded to the world’s best player — is not even rated in the top three of football’s greatest players by the 78-year-old Brazilian.

“As far as I’m concerned, Maradona was one of the best players ever,” Pele said on Wednesday in an interview with the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper.

“If you ask me, ‘Was he better than Messi?’ Yes, he was. Much better. (Franz) Beckenbauer, (Johan) Cruyff are also better. They’re also excellent players.”

Pele and Maradona have not always seen eye to eye, but Pele said the pair now enjoy a “perfect” relationship.

The only man to win the World Cup three times, Pele is widely regarded as the best footballer of all time.

In recent years he has suffered a series of health problems, but said he is now feeling 100 per cent.

“I don’t feel any more pain, but I feel some weakness. I had some good legs and look how they are now,” the former Santos and New York Cosmos player said, Xinhua reported.

Pele also revealed that he spoke to compatriot Neymar about the Paris Saint-Germain forward’s penchant going to ground when tackled.

“It’s difficult to defend Neymar for all the things he does beyond playing football. I talked with him, I told him that in soccer, he’s got it. He had bad luck because the team didn’t win the World Cup and he was branded,” Pele said.

“I was with him twice in Europe. We talked and I told him: ‘In soccer, God gave you a gift, but what you did is what made it difficult.”

Priyanka Chopra’s investment in Bumble aimed at social impact

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi Actress Priyanka Chopra’s maiden venture as an investor in social and dating application Bumble, which has been launched in India, aims at bringing social change and women empowerment by letting only the woman make the first move in heterosexual matches.

India is the first country in Asia to get Bumble, which was founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd shortly after she left Tinder, a dating app she co-founded.

Herd told IANS here: “It was Priyanka Chopra’s idea to get Bumble to India. We always had India on the radar but we thought it might be a long time from now. When Priyanka and I were sitting next to each other at a dinner, we were sharing our missions and visions about the planet, and what we care about.

“We realised we care a lot about the empowerment of girls and women around the world, and she said it’s remarkable what you’re doing with Bumble, and this is so important for India. Let’s take it there.”

Bumble has 45 million users in 140 countries. Apart from being a date-finding platform, it also facilitates friendships with its “BFF mode” and business networking via Bumble Bizz.

US is the largest market for Bumble, but its high-growth markets include Australia, Canada, UK, Germany and Netherlands. For the Indian market, language and cultural localisation has been done.

Available in Hindi and ‘Hinglish’ on iOS and Android, Bumble has incorporated a religion filter, apart from letting users mention astrological signs, whether the person drinks or smokes, has pets or not, and the option for women to only mention the initial of their first names — giving them the choice to disclose only what they want.

“In India, Bumble started in October 2018, and it’s doing well so far. It goes to show there’s a real need, and the statistics are promising in a short time. You would assume it’s just another dating app, but it’s so much beyond that. Only 30 per cent users are using it exclusively for dating, and there’s a huge chunk looking at the business networking and friend finding. We are just trying to facilitate the digital empowered version of what we all need in the physical realm — which is connections in business, friendship and love,” said the 29-year-old Herd.

Sarah Jones Simmer, Chief Operating Officer, Bumble, said they understand that there may be reserved mindsets about dating in India, but they saw the country as a progressive society.

“Our eyes are open to the challenges, but we see them as opportunities,” Simmer said, adding that they may look at spreading their wings later by creating a physical place for people to connect — akin to a Bumble Spots pilot they are doing in the US.

As for competition, there are apps like Tinder, Truly Madly and OKCupid in India. But Herd is confident about what she is offering.

“Competition is a great thing. It means that the need is validated… But with what we have, there is no competitor. We are approaching this with a true desire to create change and impact, and to empower women and men globally. A lot of the platforms that you may think are competitors, are truly just entering the market for numbers. That’s what sets us apart.”

Bumble was launched in India officially at an event here on Wednesday night. It was attended by newly married Priyanka and her American singer husband Nick Jonas.

The idea, as Priyanka’s manager Anjula Acharia — who is also a strategic advisor for Bumble in India — said, emerged as they felt women in India don’t just need dating apps, but something which helps them in all areas of life.

“Priyanka is very purpose-driven. She is very driven by things that make the world better and have a social impact,” Acharia, who has a huge role to play in the actress’ successful crossover from Bollywood to Hollywood.

The actress will be the brand’s face in the country, but her “celebrity status is only the icing,” Herd said.

“We never even approached our work with Priyanka thinking she’s a celebrity. We clicked with her passion to chase a common vision and mission with us and that is what became so special about this collaboration. Her celebrity status is just the icing on the top because what’s special about Priyanka is that she is not just the face of the brand here, but also very invested in this. She cares about it.”

HonourOur Heroes of 26/11

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

The Mumbai attacks of 26/11 awakened an entire nation to become more responsive to terrorism and taught us that, freedom, never comes easy. The students of SIBM Bengaluru, every year, commemorate the sacrifice of the bravehearts who laid down their lives on that dreary night, lest we forget. This year too, Jzaa – the Dramatics Club of SIBM Bengaluru, in association with the Social Responsibility Committee performed ‘Nukkad Natak’ on the 2nd of December at the UB CITY Mall in Bengaluru, as a tribute to those valiant individuals who stood firm against the terror and flagged the spirit of patriotism and humanity in the troubled times of the Mumbai attacks. The theme for this year’s Street Play was SANGHARSH, which encapsulated the agitation of the people against the social injustices and orthodox beliefs that prevail in the country.

The play unfolded in front of an audience of approximately 700 people. Raw and hard-hitting, the outstanding street play created awareness to value the sacrifice of those who gave up their tomorrow for our today and urged everyone to rise above the evils of the society. The crisp script, catchy phrases, songs and intelligent emphasis on speech left the audience spellbound. Focusing on the atrocities that plague our society, SANGHARSH, appealed to the conscience of one and all to step up and take affirmative action in combating the injustices and not be a mere spectator.

The performers portrayed how change in society does not merely mean reacting-accusing-rioting-forgetting, playing the age-old blame game on the government for mishandling the affairs. It is to find an alternative that will help mitigate the situation.

The chants of “Aatank ho prahaar tu, Aakrosh ki pukaar tu” served as a wakeup call that drove the impetus for change. The students took this opportunity to spread the message of unity and peace and stressed the importance of raising one’s voice for a right cause. Gagan, a theatre enthusiast, who witnessed the performance said, “I have never seen something like this unfold on such a grand scale. The theme touched my heart and the hard work that the students had put in was very evident.”

Ashish, the coordinators of Jzaa, said “The intent behind this play is to convey the message that we as a nation are channelizing our energy in the wrong direction. And, that it’s time to redirect it for the betterment of our nation.”

Nothing is more impactful than a clever mixture of entertainment and an attempt to bring about change and the students of SIBM Bengaluru today made that happen.

About SIBM Bengaluru:

Kashmiri terrorist Zakir Musa hiding in Punjab, high alert sounded

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Chandigarh Security agencies have been put on high alert in Bathinda and Ferozepur districts of Punjab on Thursday following intelligence reports that Kashmiri terrorist Zakir Musa could be hiding in the area.

The intelligence reports have suggested that Musa could be disguised as a Sikh and wearing a turban. He is the Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind chief and is said to be aligned with a global terror group.

Army troopers, Punjab Police and other para-military were stationed in and around important places like the Bathinda railway station and checking was being carried out since early Thursday.

Security agencies have put up posters carrying photographs of Musa, including one of him disguised as a Sikh, at various places to make the public aware in both districts.

Posters of Musa had earlier been put up in the frontier districts of Gurdaspur and Amritsar in November following similar reports that he could be hiding in Punjab.

Musa, who heads the terrorist outfit Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGH), a cell of Al-Qaeda, in Kashmir Valley, is said to be well-acquainted with places and people in Punjab.

He was a student in an educational institution in Punjab’s Mohali district, adjoining Chandigarh, from 2010 to 2013 before joining the militant ranks.

He had succeeded Burhan Wani as the chief of the terrorist organisation Hizbul Mujahideen following Wani’s death in an encounter with security forces in Kashmir in July 2016.

Punjab Police officials said here that the high alert had been sounded to nab the terrorist.

In recent weeks, the Punjab Police and Jammu and Kashmir Police have busted modules, including engineering students, who had carried out terror activities in Punjab.

1st Test: Poor batting leave India struggling

December 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Adelaide, Dec 6 (IANS) Poor shot selection by Indian batsmen coupled with excellent bowling by Australia left the visitors struggling at 143/6 at tea on the opening day of the first cricket Test here on Thursday.

At break, Cheteshwar Pujara was unbeaten after a gritty innings during which he posted a patient 46 off 141 deliveries, with Ravichandran Ashwin was batting on 5 at the other end.

The visitors have only themselves to blame for their troubles as most of their top order batsmen virtually threw away their wickets by going after deliveries which they should have left alone.

After a poor first session which saw the fall of four wickets, Pujara and Rohit Sharma tried to stem the rot with a partnership of 45 runs.

However, spinner Nathan Lyon took two wickets during the post lunch session to plunge the Indians into deeper trouble.

Rohit, who scored 37 runs off 61 balls, seemed to be in good touch and set for a big score.

But attempted big shot off Lyon’s bowling handed an easy catch to Marcus Harris.

Despite the regular fall of wickets at the other end, Pujara continued to bat patiently, carefully avoiding the big shots and playing the ball along the ground.

But Lyon delivered another blow shortly before tea when Rishabh Pant edged one to the slip cordon.

Earlier, a disciplined bowling attack by Australia left India at 56/4 at lunch.

Opting to bat, the visitors were off to a disastrous start as opener K.L. Rahul’s (2) thick edge was superbly taken by Aaron Finch at third slip off a Josh Hazlewood delivery with just three runs on board.

Soon, Murali Vijay (11) also followed his partner after falling in the seventh over, leaving India at 15/2.

With the addition of just four runs in the visitor’s scorecard, pacer Pat Cummins gave a huge blow to India after packing back skipper Virat Kohli (3), thanks to a stunning catch by Usman Khawaja at gully.

Pujara and Rahane (13) then tried to put things back in control, adding 22 runs for the fourth wicket however, Hazlewood struck again in the the 21st over to dismiss the latter.

Incoming batsman Rohit Sharma and Pujara then played some sensible cricket as India crept past the 50-run mark.

Brief scores:

India: 143/6 (Cheteshwar Pujara 46 batting, Rohit Sharma 37; Josh Hazlewood 2/28, Nathan Lyon 2/51) vs Australia at Tea on Day 1.

Amit Shah lied about manifesto’: Congress appeal to EC

December 5, 2018 by Nasheman

The Congress on Tuesday approached the Election Commission seeking action against BJP president Amit Shah for allegedly “stoking communal tensions” in Telangana by twisting the Congress manifesto and spreading misinformation.

Campaigning at Amangal in Ranga Reddy district on December 2, Shah accused the Congress of “minority appeasement”, claiming that the Congress in its manifesto promised free electricity only to mosques and churches in the state while leaving out the temples.

Contrary to Shah’s claims, the Congress manifesto has promised free electricity supply not only to mosques and churches but also to temples and other places of worship.

Taking strong exception to Shah’s statement, a Congress delegation led by former ministers Kapil Sibal and Kamal Nath submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission seeking action against the BJP chief.

“Shah by lying about the Congress manifesto tried to vitiate the environment and create communal tension. We have asked the EC to take cognisance of Shah’s speech and send him a notice. The EC must take strong action to ensure elections are free and fair,” Sibal told the media.

The Congress delegation also raised objection over the pre-dawn preventive detention of its state unit’s working president Revanth Reddy, ahead of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s election rally in Vikarabad district.

“The way Reddy was arrested at 3 am without giving any reason indicates the government’s intention of hurting the Congress by all means. We have urged the Election Commission to take notice of that and ensure that no such arrests are made during the polls,” said Sibal. Elections to the 119-member Telangana Assembly are scheduled for December 7.

Nandi Hills to get a facelift, Infosys arm commits Rs 75 lakh

December 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Popular weekend hotspot Nandi Hills, an ancient hill fortress in Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka which falls en route to the Kempegowda International Airport, will soon get a new look. Infosys Foundation led by Sudha Murthy, the philanthropic arm of IT major Infosys, has committed Rs 75 lakh for the purpose.

With this money, new pathways and stone steps will be set up to make the area more tourist-friendly. The restoration project will also involve reconstruction of existing pathways and steps that lead to the birthplace of the Arkavati river, which originates in the lap of Nandi Hills. The organisation will also beautify some of the damaged walls near Tipu’s Drop.

The popular cycling and trekking destination has historical significance on account of a battle that took place there between the British and Tipu Sultan in the 18th century. The Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple at the base of the hills is a Grade-1 Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)-protected structure.

Even Mahatma Gandhi had stayed in the Hills for a total of 50 days in 1927 and 1936. A hotel by the name of Gandhi Nilaya has been established at the hills by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation.

The hillock which attracts many weekend and holiday visitors is expected to see a further rise in footfalls if the long-proposed ropeway facility to the top from the foot of the hill covering over 1.5 km, becomes a reality.

Meanwhile, the Horticulture Department has started a pilot initiative from Tuesday of introducing three electric cars which will take visitors on a two-kilometre tour of the area exploring the various flora and fauna at a cost of Rs 100 for adults and Rs 50 for children. This comes after a similar initiative at the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens proved to be a hit.
