Sunil Chhetri’s call for filling stadium most ‘retweeted tweet’ of 2018

December 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Thousands rushed to watch India’s match against Kenya at the Intercontinental Cup 2018 after skipper Sunil Chhetri made an appeal on Twitter asking fans to fill the stadium. India won the match and his tweet has now been recognised as the most “retweeted tweet” of the year from India.

All the 7,000 tickets at the Mumbai Football Arena were sold out days ahead of the match after Chhetri’s appeal went viral.

The video Tweet from @chetrisunil11 has been retweeted almost 60,000 times, Twitter India said on Wednesday.

In his video message, Chhetri said: “Abuse us, criticise us but please come to watch the Indian national team play.”

“To all of you, who have lost hope or don’t have any hope in Indian football, we request you to come and watch us in the stadium.”

The Indian team captain made the appeal after just around 2,500 fans came to watch their previous game.

Virat Kohli’s (@imVkohli) tweet featuring a picture with Anushka Sharma (@AnushkaSharma) on the occasion of Karvachauth, also won hearts on Twitter.

With over 215,000 likes, the Tweet showcasing the celebrity couple in ethnic wear emerged as the “most liked” Tweet of 2018.

In 2018, regional entertainment conversations expanded and generated massive engagement on Twitter in India.

South Indian films #Sarkar, #Viswasam, #BharatAneNenu, #AravindhaSametha, #Rangasthalam, #Kaala and TV show #BiggBossTelugu2 clinched seven of the top 10 hashtags this year.

Beyond entertainment, the return of Chennai Super Kings with #WhistlePodu and the emergence of #MeToo in India added to the top hashtag trends.

2018 was also the year when Twitter reacted en masse as people demanded #JusticeForAsifa, engaged in ongoing political debates on #KarnatakaElection and #Aadhaar.

But it was not just politics and movements that had people tweeting in 2018. India celebrated Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s (#DeepVeer) romance as well as major wins at global sporting occasions like #AsianGames as Indian athletes, including Bajrang Punia (@BajrangPunia), Hima Das (@HimaDas8) and PV Sindhu (@Pvsindhu), won laurels.

Man arrested in wife missing case of 1982

December 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Australian police have arrested the husband of a Sydney woman whose disappearance in 1982 has become the subject of a popular crime podcast.

Chris Dawson, 70, is to be charged with murdering Lynette Dawson, New South Wales (NSW) authorities said. He was arrested in Queensland and would be brought to New South Wales.

Dawson has denied killing his wife, with whom he has two children. He has said that she abandoned the family for a religious group, the BBC reported.

A search of the family’s former home in Sydney earlier in 2018 failed to turn up new evidence. However, police on Wednesday said the arrest followed three years of renewed investigations.

“We are confident with the case,” Superintendent Scott Cook told reporters. “We won’t give up on trying to identify the whereabouts of Lynette Dawson, but, from our perspective, it is not crucial to finalising the matter.”

Two separate inquests have recommended for murder charges to be laid against a “known person”.

However, prosecutors have previously said there was insufficient evidence to lay charges. No trace of Lynette Dawson has ever been found.

An inquest in 2003 found that Chris Dawson, a former high school teacher and rugby league star, had engaged in sexual relationships with teenage students during his marriage.

One 16-year-old girl moved in to the family home within days of his wife’s disappearance. The pair later married, but have since separated.

A podcast “The Teacher’s Pet” brought global attention to the case in 2018.

Since May, more than 27 million people have listened to the podcast, which is produced by The Australian newspaper.

It has highlighted the bungled handling of the Dawson case by police in the early years after her disappearance, prompting an apology so many years later from the state’s police commissioner.

Khashoggi murder: Saudi crown prince crazy, says US senator

December 5, 2018 by Nasheman

US senators say they are more certain than ever after a private CIA briefing that the Saudi crown prince had a role in the murder of a journalist.

In a blistering attack, Senator Lindsey Graham said he had “high confidence” Mohammed bin Salman was complicit in the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, BBC reported.

The South Carolina Republican described the Saudi royal as “a wrecking ball”, “crazy” and “dangerous”.

The Saudis have charged 11 people but deny the crown prince was involved.

Members of the Senate’s Committee on Foreign Relations did not mince words after the briefing by CIA Director Gina Haspel on Tuesday.

“There is not a smoking gun – there is a smoking saw,” Graham said, referring to Khashoggi’s alleged dismemberment in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.

The senator said he could not support Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the war in Yemen or arms sales to the Saudi government as long as the crown prince remained in power.

Senator Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, echoed those views.

He said the US must “send a clear and unequivocal message that such actions are not acceptable in the world’s stage”.

Another senator, Bob Corker, told reporters, using the crown prince’s initials: “I have zero question on my mind that the crown prince MBS ordered the killing.”

The Tennessee Republican added: “If he was in front of a jury, he would be convicted in 30 minutes. Guilty.”

Corker suggested that US President Donald Trump had condoned the murder of a journalist by refusing to condemn the Saudi crown prince.

Fellow Republican Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama said: “Now the question is, how do you separate the Saudi crown prince and his group from the nation?”

The Senate is planning to vote on a proposal to end US military support to the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen, after members of both parties advanced the resolution last week.

Senator Chris Murphy, who was not privy to Tuesday’s briefing, criticised the Trump administration.

“Not everything needs to be secret,” the Connecticut Democrat tweeted.

“If our government knows that Saudi leaders were involved in the murder of a US resident, why shouldn’t the public know this?”

The CIA has concluded Mohammed bin Salman “probably ordered” the killing of Khashoggi.

The spy agency has evidence he exchanged messages with Saud al-Qahtani, who allegedly oversaw the Saudi reporter’s murder.

The CIA director — who has reportedly heard an audio recording of the murder — did not attend a recent congressional briefing by cabinet members, dismaying lawmakers.

The White House denied having a hand in Ms Haspel’s conspicuous absence, and the CIA said no one had told Haspel not to attend.

At last week’s hearing, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary James Mattis told senators there was no direct evidence of the crown prince’s involvement in Khashoggi’s death.

Trump has said the CIA findings on the crown prince were not conclusive.

On November 20, he said: “It could very well be that the crown prince had knowledge of this tragic event – maybe he did and maybe he didn’t.”

Learn humility from your mother, Owaisi tells Rahul

December 5, 2018 by Nasheman

AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday advised Congress President Rahul Gandhi to shed his arrogance, and learn humility and modesty from his mother Sonia Gandhi.

“If you are dreaming of becoming the Prime Minister, shed your arrogance. It is my humble request that you learn humility and sincerity from your mother. She has proved that simplicity takes a person far in politics,” the Hyderabad MP said.

Owaisi was addressing election rallies of his All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in the old city of Hyderabad on Tuesday night.

Dubbing Rahul Gandhi as younger brother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Owaisi said the Congress President had nothing but still showing arrogance. “If this is your attitude, I will fight you throughout my life,” he said.

The MP took strong exception to Rahul Gandhi describing him as the ‘C’ team of Modi.

“I am the captain of Hyderabad team and you are captain of Janedharu team. You tried insulting me by calling me ‘C’ team. This reflects the mentality of your upper caste because Janedharu considers himself superior to others.”

Recalling that he supported Congress party for 12 years, Owaisi said Rahul should tell the people what secret deals he struck with his party.

Owaisi said though AIMIM was contesting only eight out of 119 Assembly seats in Telangana, all the leaders from Narendra Modi to BJP President Amit Shah to Rahul Gandhi to Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President Chandrababu Naidu were worried.

He alleged that all these leaders want to finish AIMIM as it had set an example in the entire country by becoming the voice of Muslims of Hyderabad and the symbol of their unity. “They want to eliminate the political identity of Muslims of Hyderabad,” he said.

Owaisi pointed out how the Muslims in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal suffer were suffering due to lack of any party to strive to safeguard their interests.

On Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s remark that if BJP comes to power Owaisi will have to flee Hyderabad, the AIMIM leader reiterated that he is neither going to flee nor he is afraid of such threats.

Owaisi said Yogi’s threat was an insult to 17 crore Muslims of India as this amounts to projecting them as second class citizens.

The Hyderabad MP said the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister should first take care of his state. “In your state ‘gaurakshaks’ killed a police officer by shooting him in his head. Why are you coming here? You will get nothing here,” he added.

Modi attends Priyanka-Nick’s Delhi reception

December 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a high-profile crowd in congratulating newly-married couple actress Priyanka Chopra and American singer Nick Jonas at their reception here on Tuesday.

Modi arrived here amid tight security to be a part of the special day of the actress, who first made India proud by winning the Miss World crown in 2000, and then became a leading Bollywood actress, followed by a rare successful crossover into Hollywood.

The PM, who was escorted on stage by Priyanka’s mother Madhu Chopra, was dressed in a white kurta-pyjama with a black Nehru jacket. He remained on stage for about 10 minutes, meeting Nick and Priyanka’s families with folded hands and exchanging pleasantries.

Priyanka introduced her brother-in-law Joe Jonas and his to-be-wife, “Game Of Thrones” actress Sophie Turner, to Modi saying: “Inki bhi shaadi hone waali hai (They are also going to get married).”

The couple of the night posed with panache. Priyanka dazzled in an elegant white bejewelled ensemble with a multi-layered diamond necklace and earrings, with her hair neatly tied in a bun complete with white roses. She flaunted the “chopra” — traditional red bangles worn by a Punjabi bride — and sported vermillion. Nick was dressed in a velvet dinner jacket and completed the look with a bow tie.

The venue, the Durbar Hall at the Taj Palace Hotel, was done up elegantly with exotic white and soft pink flowers, and the “NP” icon, which has remained a staple throughout the couple’s wedding, stood out on the elaborate stage.

Candles flickered away at different spots of the venue which was enlivened by the sound of live music and a free flow of cocktails and a wide variety of food.

There was also an element of quirk with a vintage car which read “Just Married”.

Guests, which mostly included Priyanka’s family members, also saw veteran designers Ritu Kumar and Ritu Beri, along with Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) President Sunil Sethi, in attendance.

Kumar was touched by Priyanka’s invitation.

“I remember Priyanka had come to me first before she was going for the Miss World pageant, and I had told her to wear a lot of ethnic wear. She wore some of my designs. I am very happy for her. She has come a long way,” Kumar told IANS.

The gala evening was preceded by a three-day extravaganza in Jodhpur’s majestic Umaid Bhawan Palace, where Priyanka, 36, and Nick, 26, exchanged wedding vows as per Christian and Hindu rituals in two separate ceremonies.

Their pre-wedding rituals at the celebrations, which saw participation from just a little over 200 guests, included a “mehendi” ceremony. There was also a friendly cricket match between the two families, as well as a glitzy and power-packed musical evening.

Of her wedding, Priyanka, a National Award-winning actress who has made her name in Hollywood as the lead star in American show “Quantico”, told people.com of her wedding: “I love that our wedding was a religious mash-up.

“We took beautiful traditions that we both grew up with and personalised them in a way that made sense for us. It’s been incredible to find the commonalities between our beliefs and figuring out how to blend them in a respectful and meaningful way.”

HC faults police over Telangana Congress leader’s arrest

December 5, 2018 by Nasheman

The Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday voiced its unhappiness over the manner in which Telangana Police arrested state Congress working President Revanth Reddy from his house in the dead of night.

The court asked the state government what was the need for taking the Congress leader into custody. It heard thrice the habeas corpus petition filed by Congress leader V. Narender Reddy and in the evening summoned Advocate General to record his statement.

Advocate General B.S. Prasad sought time till Wednesday to submit evidence to justify Revanth’s arrest.

Earlier, the police submitted to the court that they took him into custody as his call for a shutdown in Kodangal to protest Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s visit could have created law and order problems.

The court observed that there was nothing wrong in Revanth calling for a shutdown and asked police to provide evidence to justify its action.

Revanth was arrested from his residence at 3 a.m ahead of KCR’s election rally at Kosgi in Kodangal constituency, which was represented by the Congress leader in the dissolved Assembly.

After KCR’s rally in the evening, police released Revanth Reddy. The Congress leader alleged that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) had hatched a plan to create disturbances in Kodangal in the next 48 hours. He claimed that KCR was using police to suppress the opposition and using money to influence the voters.

Revanth had called for a shutdown in Kodangal to protest against police raids at his house last week.

The Election Commission had also issued a notice to Reddy over his threat. A police officer said a case was booked against Revanth Reddy on a complaint by the Electoral Officer.

The Congress party strongly condemned the arrest of its leader and lodged a complaint with the Election Commission. It said with just a day for the campaigning to come to an end, their leader was denied an opportunity to campaign.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi tweeted that Revanth’s arrest is a proof of KCR’s autocratic rule. In the comments in Telugu on his Twitter handle, the Congress leader said the arrest cannot stop the Congress’ march. He further wrote that the time has come for the end of anti-people rule of TRS.

Senior Congress leader S. Jaipal Reddy condemned the manner in which police arrested Revanth. He said the fear of election defeat has gripped KCR.

State’s Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumar, however, denied the allegations that they are biased. He said they treat all political parties equally.

Elections to the 119-member Telangana Assembly are scheduled for December 7.

5 states fined Rs 1 lakh for not giving details on mid-day meal

December 5, 2018 by Nasheman

The Supreme Court on Tuesday imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh each on Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Odisha and Jammu and Kashmir for not furnishing details on the mid-day meal scheme in their states.

A bench of Justice Madan B. Lokur, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Hemant Gupta also imposed the cost of Rs 2 lakh on the Delhi government for not furnishing the information on mid-day meal scheme.

The court said the fines would be deposited with the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee within four weeks for juvenile justice issues.

The order followed a PIL by Antarrashtriya Manav Adhikaar Nirgraani Parishad drawing the court’s attention to malpractices in the implementation of the scheme.

Noting that the Mid Day Meal Scheme was of considerable benefit to the children, the court in its order said: “We have been trying to get the states to render assistance and to upload all the data so that necessary corrective steps can be taken from time to time. In spite of several of our orders, there has been little or no co-operation from some of the states.”

Saying that the scheme was not being taken “seriously by several States”, the court said: “Data has not been supplied and there are allegations made by the petitioner about foodgrains disappearing and not reaching the schools.”

Imposing the fine, the court said that Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Odisha had said that they will comply with the requirements of the Mid Day Meal Scheme and provide necessary links giving the details of the implementation of the scheme to the satisfaction of the petitioner.

However, the court said, “more than a month has gone by and there has been absolutely no progress made by these states”.

Coal scam: ED attaches Rs 117-crore property of Prakash Industries

December 5, 2018 by Nasheman

The Enforcement Directorate has attached Rs 117.09-crore movable and immovable properties of Prakash Industries in connection with its ongoing probe against it in allocation of Fatehpur coal block in Chhattisgarh in 2008, the agency said on Tuesday.

The ED said the proceeds of the crime had been “generated and used in the continuous expansion related to manufacturing activities” therefore the properties were attached under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).”

The ED said: “Prakash Industries filed false declaration with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on November 17, 2007 intimating the allocation of coal block. The coal block was actually allocated on February 6, 2008 jointly to Prakash Industries and SKS Ispat Power Ltd.”

As a result of filing false declaration, the shares of Prakash Industries recorded an astronomical rise in their value, the ED said.

“At one point of time on April 2, 2007, the share price was Rs 31 per share whereas it was Rs 351 per share on January 4, 2008. The company in order to encash the artificially created rise in their share value, issued 62,50,000 preferential shares on premium of Rs 180 per share and sold these shares to five selected companies. In this process, the firm generated Rs 118.75 crore in the form of share capital,” the ED said.

The ED started a probe after filing a case on August 30, 2014 based on a Central Bureau of Investigation’s FIR that followed allegation the firm had applied for allocation of coal block on January 12, 2007 to the Coal Ministry as per the advertisement dated November 13, 2006.

The application was found to be containing false net-worth details and on the basis of such misrepresentation, the company got allocated Fatehpur coal block on February 6, 2008, which was de-allocated in 2014, the ED said.
