Baba Ramdev’s big statement on next PM…Can’t say who

December 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Yoga guru Baba Ramdev has said it was “very difficult” to predict the country’s next Prime Minister in view of the current political situation.

Noting that he was “not focussed” on politics, the 53-year-old yoga guru said he would not support or oppose anyone in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Talking to reporters at the airport here Tuesday, Ramdev said, “We can’t say who will become the next prime minister (after the 2019 general elections).”

“We do not have a political or religious agenda… We want to make a spiritual India and world… Not Hindu India or communal India,” he added.

His comments come days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a big blow as it lost power in its earlier ruled Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The Congress won convincingly in Chhattisgarh, less so in Rajasthan and edged out the saffron party in a cliffhanger in Madhya Pradesh.

Referring to the Ayodhya dispute, Ramdev claimed that the BJP would lose trust if the ‘Ram Mandir’ was not built in Ayodhya now.

The yoga guru was in the state to attend a national executive meeting of Bharat Swabhiman in Rameswaram.

On Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah’s remarks on mob violence in Uttar Pradesh, Ramdev said, “accusing India of religious intolerance amounts to degrading the country’s pride”.

The charge that country was religiously intolerant was tantamount to “ungratefulness, disrespect and treason,” he added.

Apparently referring to the recent violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr, Shah had said that at many places in the country the “death of a cow is being given more importance than the killing of a policeman”.

The veteran actor had also expressed anxiety over the well-being of his children, who he said, have not been brought up as followers of any particular religion.

The violence, which occurred earlier this month over an incident of alleged cow slaughter, had claimed two lives, including that of a police inspector.

Nasheman News : Chasing her dreams despite the innumerable obstacles in her way, India’s first female wrestler in WWE, Kavita Devi, has urged women athletes to take part in the WWE talent try-outs in March 2019.

The four-day tryout in Mumbai will give up to 40 athletes from India an opportunity to showcase their abilities with the goal of being selected to begin training at the state-of-the-art WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.

The 32-year-old had etched her name in the history books when the she became the first Indian woman to take part in the Mae Young Classic in 2017.

“This time the aspiring athletes have a great chance as WWE has arrived to India to take tryouts and I want more and more athletes to take part in it,” Kavita told IANS in an interview.

“WWE is a world level game and have some world class athletes. So in order to match that level you have do a lot of hardwork. It is not necessary that in order to enter this field you need wrestling. You can give try-outs,” she added.

Kavita also cautioned the athletes that problems might arise but it is the attitude that matters.

“I have also faced several problems. But I never stopped. You will fall but the will to rise again matters. My secret for success is that I never stopped and never gave up despite several problems,” Kavita said.

“WWE has always helped women to grow in this field and the women’s athletes in this field also showed that they are not less than any other male athletes,” she added.

WWE superstar Matt Hardy, who was on a three-day visit to India earlier this month, also asked athletes to participate in the try-outs.

“There is try-outs coming here in March 2019 which will give best opportunity to Indian wrestlers to be at the highest platform,” he said.

Matt Hardy burst onto the scene in a set of plaid tights in 1994 at age 19. His partner Jeff also helped to revolutionise tag team wrestling in the industry.

Matt also gave advice for the aspiring athletes and said: “You have to have a true passion to be in this industry. Obviously you have to be an athlete and need to be in a best athleteic shape as possible because it is such a hard and tough job both mentaiily and physically.”

“India has a great potential to be a talent pool for WWE besides such a great market for WWE. There are so many amazing athletes that came out from India especially Oympic athletes. I think those guys cane have an amazing transition to be an WWE superstar,” he added.

Babri Masjid Action Committee to approach SC if Ram temple ordinance passed

LThe Babri Masjid Action Committee (BMAC) has decided to file a petition in the Supreme Court in case the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre brings in an ordinance paving way for the construction of a grand Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya, an office-bearer said on Wednesday.

He said the BMAC took the decision at a meeting on Tuesday.

The move comes ahead of the January 4 hearing by the apex court on the matter.

While right-wing groups and the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) have been pressing for the ordinance, the opposition has been seeking a court verdict on the contentious issue.

One of the 70 persons, who attended the meeting, said it was a routine one and had no specific agenda. Though the possibility of the Modi government bringing in an ordinance or a legislation on the temple issue was discussed.

Convenor of the BMAC Zafaryab Jilani said the committee would also urge the Supreme Court to not rush through the matter and pronounce a verdict only after going through all aspects and studying all relevant papers and documents.

The BMAC members were also of the view that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) electoral defeats in three states, the whipping up of passion on the temple issue and the pro-temple statements by senior BJP leaders, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, could not be taken in isolation or lightly.

‘Indian science journals need a quality upgrade’

December 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Although the number of Indian research journals has spiraled to over 21,000 in 10 years, they are sadly not making a mark globally, says Subash Lakhotia, a leading academician at the Banaras Hindu University.

In a hard-hitting editorial in the “Current Science” journal that is likely to kindle a fierce debate, the emeritus professor with over 50 years of research experience has put the blame for this predicament squarely on the country’s science establishment, academies and its top scientists.

While on one side a large proportion of research journals from India are “predatory” or bogus, “it is a matter of concern that even the journals of long-standing do not attract high-quality research output even from (scientists) within the country,” the editorial says.

According to Lakhotia, India’s older and established journals were started decades ago by well-known scientists and learned societies “with a clear conviction that a country needs to have its own good research journals to support growth of competitive and quality research”.

“Unfortunately today, most of our established and reputed scientists do not like to publish in Indian journals,” he says. The present tendency to publish in journals outside India “will retard the process of building up a scientific tradition for India and keep her in a position of semi-dependence in the world of science”, the editorial warns.

Top Indian scientists not only fail to publish their work in local journals but think it below their “level” to review the manuscripts of other researchers for journals published in India.

Lakhotia says he found many young researchers around the country are willing to publish their research results in journals from India but “their single major inhibiting factor is the fear that they would receive low or no scores for publications in Indian journals when their seniors evaluate them”.

The editorial puts the blame partly on India’s scientific establishment, saying it does not seem to have strong faith in the quality of research journals published within the country “as none of them” has a significant impact factor — frequently used as a proxy for the relative importance of a journal within its field.

The editorial also notes that a large number of Indian research journals now have “co-publishing” arrangements with commercial publishers abroad ostensibly to improve their global visibility. Lakhotia says this justification “is fallacious and not much change has occurred in the quality of what is published in their pages”.

The only advantage is that the journals can share a percentage of profits earned by their co-publishing commercial houses that charge substantial amounts for the journal articles down-loaded from their sites. “In my perception such acts impinge on the academic autonomy of the academies/learned societies that publish these journals.”

Lakhotia says India’s science establishment continues to look down upon papers and researchers who publish in Indian journals, notwithstanding their association with a “foreign” brand name.

If established scientists in the country do not wish to publish in Indian journals, do not wish to review manuscripts for these journals and, more importantly, directly or indirectly penalise those who publish in them, “these journals would continue to struggle and fail to become internationally competitive”, Lakhotia warns.

The editorial adds: “Our established researchers should publish some of their original research output in Indian journals, participate in critical review of manuscripts when invited by an editor, and, more importantly, must not look down upon researchers just because they have published in Indian journals.”

Lakhotia concludes by saying that “as a community, we need to strive hard to be proud of our journals rather than be apologetic. Individuals and institutions must be assessed on the basis of what they publish rather than where they publish.”

“I am in substantial agreement with Lakhotia,” Professor Mamannamana Vijayan at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and former President of the Indian National Science Academy, told this correspondent, adding: “However, I do not know how to completely solve the problem when the centre of gravity of world science remains in the West.”

“Of course, Professor Lakhotia is right,” says Subbiah Arunachalam, a Chennai-based information consultant who had been editor of several scientific journals.

“Many (or most) senior scientists in India have abandoned their responsibility to nurture science. No doubt they are keen to do good research and publish in top journals, but what about contributing to the development of a community of active researchers or supporting research institutions (and smaller universities and colleges) in the neighborhood?”.

Professor Lingadahalli Shashidhara, at the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Pune, says he only partly agrees with Lakhotia.

“Some introspection is needed on why we need Indian journals in a digital world,” Shashidhara told this correspondent. “If we publish in Indian journals the kind of work that is being published by hundreds of other such journals, we tend to lose out on quality if we only depend on Indian submissions,” he added.

“Considering that the Indian scientific community is large enough to spin out its own schools of thoughts (evolution, biodiversity-ecology, high-energy physics, astrophysics/astronomy — to name a few), Indian journals should focus on such topics giving not only appropriate platforms to Indian community, but also pushing the frontiers of knowledge,” Shashidhara contended.

Deve Gowda disappointed that not being invited for the Bogibeel bridge inaugural

December 26, 2018 by Nasheman

B Former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda on Tuesday, December 25 expressed his disappointment at not being invited for the inauguration of the country’s longest railroad bridge in Assam though he had laid the foundation stone of it.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, December 25 inaugurated the 4.9 km long bridge at Bogibeel across Brahmaputra river, built at a cost of Rs 5,900 crore. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Gowda when he was the prime minister in 1997.

“Railway line to Kashmir, Delhi Metro and Bogibeel railroad bridge were among the projects I had sanctioned (as prime minister). I had sanctioned the budget of Rs 100 crore for each of these projects and laid their foundation stones. People have forgotten me today,” Gowda said.

Replying to a question from reporters on the sidelines of a function here as to how he felt about the inauguration of the project started by him, the former prime minister said he had given the nod for many projects.

To a question whether he received an invitation, Gowda quipped, “Aiyo Rama! Who will remember me? Some newspapers might have mentioned about it.”

On the enormous delay in completing the project, he said, “That is where I differ. I completed the Hassan-Mysuru project in 13 months. I completed two bridges on time.

“Some people from Bombay Karnataka region say that Deve Gowda did not do anything (for the north Karnataka region), go and see it,” he added.

Siddu Meets Reddy -Buys Peace Till Loksabha Elections

December 26, 2018 by Nasheman

After the intervention of  Congress legislature party(CLP) leader, Siddaramaiah, powerful leaders who were left out of the cabinet like former minister, R. Ramalinga Reddy seem to have decided to bury the hatchet till the Lok Sabha elections.

These disgruntled leaders with the exception of  Belagavi strongman, Ramesh Jarkiholi who remains stubborn following his exit from the cabinet, seem to have decided to adopt a wait and watch policy till the elections.

This became evident when Mr Reddy spoke to the media after his  meetings with Mr Siddarmaiah and subsequently with KPCC president, Dinesh Gundurao at Cauvery, where Mr Siddaramaiah resides.

Mr Reddy who is cut up with Deputy Chief Minister, Dr G. Parameshwar for trying to reduce his sphere of influence in Bengaluru politics, said the Congress will be facing Lok Sabha elections under four leaders – Former PM H.D. Deve Gowda, CM H.D. Kumaraswamy, CLP leader, Siddaramaiah and KPCC president, Dinesh Gundurao – hence, all these leaders will make efforts to win more  seats in the elections. “I being a hardcore Congressman, I want my party leader to be the country’s next PM. For  this, I will work with these leaders hand-in-hand,” he declared.

He added that he was “upset” not because he was denied a post but because the party was facing “some” shortcomings which needed to be tackled properly. “I cannot reveal what these shortcomings are at this juncture. There is still a long way to go. As a party leader, I must throw light on these shortcomings at an appropriate forum, which I have done,” he said cryptically without  elaborating on it.

He further added that he was 100 per cent satisfied with the outcome of the meeting with Mr Siddarmaiah. “It is a known fact that the Congress has entered into a coalition arrangement, as a result of this, we gain some and lose some. In this game, I may have been left out, but it is also equally true that I was not after any post,” he said.

In response to a question on the resignation threat by corporators from his Assembly segment and BJP leaders contacting him, Mr Reddy said, “I have asked my corporators not to resign as it will send the wrong signal. With regard to a BJP leader getting in touch with me, it was not to persuade me to join the BJP.  Yelahanka MLA S.R. Vishwanath met me to invite me for his son’s marriage. He is my relative.”

I wanted them to be flushed out : HDK

December 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Facing widespread criticism from Opposition parties for directing police officials to shoot the killers of a Janata Dal (Secular) leader in Maddur, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has clarified that he did not actually mean to say that the perpetrators of the brutal crime should be killed but wanted them to be flushed out from their  hideout as soon as possible.

Making it clear that his statement was merely an emotional outburst, the Chief Minister said in Vijayapura on Tuesday that what he had said on Monday should be construed as ‘smoke out’ and not ‘shoot the killers’ as was ‘interpreted’ earlier.

Maintaining that his earlier statement was a slip of the tongue, Mr Kumaraswamy said he will visit Maddur and also directed police officials to conduct a thorough investigation to bring the culprits to book.

On Monday, after the murder took place, the CM in a telephonic conversation with a senior official that was caught on camera, had made the controversial ‘shoot’ remark with the audio going viral on Tuesday triggering outrage among several Opposition leaders who condemned the statement. The Chief Minister said he acted in a fit of rage as he knew the victim, 50-year old H. Prakash, a former zilla panchayat member.

In the video, Mr Kumaraswamy was heard saying: “I don’t know how you will handle it (the case).. because it was your responsibility. I am actually disappointed because it (the murder) brought a bad name. He (Prakash) was a good person. There is no problem if you shoot such people mercilessly,” he said alluding to the alleged killers.

“I am least bothered (about the consequences),” the chief minister had said.

Karnataka chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy found himself in a raging controversy on Tuesday after he asked a police official to “shoot mercilessly” those who had killed a worker of his JDS in Mandya district, a stronghold of the party.

Slamming Kumarasw-amy, state BJP chief B.S. Yeddyurappa, “I never expected this from the chief minister. If he speaks like this, what will happen to the law and order situation? An irresponsible and nonsense statement by Kumaraswamy,” told reporters Tuesday.

Senior BJP leader and former minister Shobha Karandjale said it was a clear case of “anarchy and lawlessness”.

Prakash was hacked to death allegedly by four men in Maddur town of Mandya district Monday evening, police said.

The assailants had stopped Prakash’s car when he was going home and hacked him to death with machetes.
