Bengaluru FC beat Kerala Blasters in ISL tie

November 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Bengaluru FC kept their perfect record against Kerala Blasters FC intact in the Indian Super League (ISL) with a 2-1 win at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Monday.

Captain Sunil Chhetri opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a neat finish past Naveen Kumar. Kerala equalised with a well-converted spot-kick by Slavisa Stojanovic in the 30th minute but an own goal by Nikola Krcmarevic in the 80th minute settled the tie in favour of the visitors.

The win means Bengaluru FC have now won all three of their away matches on the trot to maintain a perfect record.

The home side could have earned an early lead had C.K. Vineeth kept his shot on target from Prasanth Karuthadathkuni’s low cross from the right. The forward sneaked into the box from the right but sent his effort over the bar.

Erik Paartalu had the goal at his mercy at the other end minutes later.

Dimas Delgado’s delivery from a free-kick was headed by Sandesh Jhingan into the feet of the Australian whose effort from the near post was cleared by Lalruatthara who was positioned near the goal line.

The Blues made a breakthrough in the 17th minute through a neat finish by Chhetri.

Miku’s terrific through-ball behind the Kerala defence allowed Chhetri to race into the box and put the ball into the net.

Blasters were back in the contest at the half-hour mark. Sahal Samad collected Cyril Kali’s throw-in from the right flank but was fouled inside the box by Nishu Kumar before he could get his shot away.

The referee pointed at the spot and Stojanovic stepped up to score an emphatic spot-kick.

The hosts, boosted by the equaliser, could have taken the lead before half-time. Nikola Krcmarevic’s excellent cross-field diagonal reached Prasanth on the right flank who found Doungel inside the box and the Indian striker forced Gurpreet to a good reflex save.

After the break, Erik Paartalu’s long ball into the box had the Kerala defence on alert.

Harmanjot Khabra headed the ball back to Chhetri who lobbed it forward for Miku but the Venezuelan’s deflected effort went wide.

Another long punt up the field, this time by goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh, allowed Miku to sneak into the box past Lakic-Pesic.

The Venezuelan found Udanta Singh in the centre but the winger’s powerful shot took a deflection and was parried away by Naveen.

In the final quarter of the game, Vineeth threatened again when he beat the offside trap to latch onto Prasanth’s delightful through-ball but his shot past Gurpreet rolled wide of goal.

Bengaluru broke the Kerala hearts with nine minutes to go. Xisco released Miku into the box and the latter’s return was sent goalwards by the Spaniard. Naveen’s save off the substitute’s shot hit Krcmarevic before rolling into the net.

Kerala hardly created any chance of note thereafter as their unbeaten start to the season came to an end.

Women targeted by Sabarimala protesters

November 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Sabarimala protesters on Tuesday raged, intimidated and sent back at least one woman from the age group of 10-50 years as they refused to break with tradition.

After the Lord Ayyappa temple opened on Monday at 5 p.m. for the special one-day session amid tight security, there were violent protests by devotees late in the night and early on Tuesday as they found out women from the hitherto banned age group approaching the shrine.

Two women on Tuesday were apprehended on their way through Pamba and threatened after devotees found out they were without the holy kit (Irumudi Kettu).

Shouting Ayyappa slogans the protesters stopped them from advancing any further. This was despite the fact that they were above 50 years, the police said.

It was not until their leaders announced on microphones that the protests ended. Later the women were helped to complete their darshan and perform puja at the hilltop temple.

The first protests were witnessed late on Monday, when a 30-year-old woman along with her husband and children was stopped. Following the violent outbursts, the woman retreated.

She was sent back home along with her family early on Tuesday under police security.

Although Kerala Police has literally taken over Sabarimala posting a dozen women officials over 50 years of age near the shrine, there has not been any woman devotee inside the sanctum sanctorum from the hitherto banned age group despite the Pinarayi Vijayan government promising to carry out the September 28 Supreme Court verdict.

The temple will shut its gates at 10 p.m.

According to figures more than 10,000 pilgrims had taken the pathway to the temple hilltop, compared with less than 1,000 devotees the same day last year.

The temple had witnessed massive protests between October 17 and 22, after it opened for the first time following the apex court’s ruling allowing the hitherto banned age group of girls and women to enter the Lord Ayyappa shrine.

The temple town is witnessing one of its most stringent security arrangements. There were more than 2,300 police officials posted at various points up the pilgrimage path after the state took over the shrine’s security on Saturday.

Several metal detectors have been kept at a various points and crowd combating arrangements are also in place.

The Kerala government has announced it would implement the apex court’s ruling, pitting it against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and numerous Hindu groups which have been up in arms against the verdict.

Delhi’s air quality improves to ‘severe’

November 6, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi The national capital and its surroundings continued to suffer toxic air quality on Tuesday with only a slight improvement from “emergency” to “severe” category.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi at 9 a.m. was recorded 403, on a scale of 0 to 500. The AQI on Monday at the same time was 415, which had gradually worsened to 435 by evening.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the shallow fog in the morning mixed with the pollutants that lead to smog.

On Tuesday, there was a slight drop in moisture, which was good for dispersion of pollutants.

The pollution monitoring agencies said that the extra load of pollutants coming from stubble burning from neighbouring states also registered a slight drop, leading to slight improvement — though still in the danger zone.

“The condition is expected to prevail till Diwali,” said the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR)

However, it might improve if no additional emission from firecrackers add to Delhi’s air, it added.

The average volume of particle pollutant PM2.5 , or particles with a diametre less than 2.5 mm, was 257 microgrammes per cubic meters, considered “severe”.

The safe limit of PM2.5 and PM10 is under-60 and 100 units, as per national standards. The international standards are 25 units for PM2.5 and 50 units for PM10.

Gold sales average on ‘dhanteras’ in Mumbai

November 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Keeping in tune with expectations, gold sales have notched a sharp fall of 40 per cent this year compared to 2017 Diwali owing to high prices and overall negative market sentiments, a leading retailers body said on Monday.

“Though there are crowds, people are not buying as per the expectations, but merely making token purchases of 5-10-20 gm to mark the auspicious day. Mostly gold coins/guineas are moving while small, medium or big articles of jewellery are virtually ignored,” said Mumbai Jewellers Federation President Rakesh Shetty.

However, another industry body, the All India Gem & Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), said that contrary to expectations, gold and jewellery sales have zoomed during ‘dhanteras’ and the positive trend was expected to continue till the upcoming winter wedding season.

“The past three days have surprised even the industry. People are literally out in droves in shops and showrooms to make gold purchases. Since two months, till last Saturday, the market situation was extremely gloomy,” said GJC President Nitin Khandelwal.

However, this time the purchases – mostly in small jewelleries of 10 gm (1 tola) or multiples – is for end-user purposes and not as investments, with the prospects of gold prices shooting up with the likely increase in US dollar rates soon.

“Our expectation is that USD may touch around Rs 85 in the near future given the current international scenario. Along with that, gold itself would shoot up to Rs 45,000 per tola (10 gm). Plus, the upcoming winter marriage season is also driving up the sales,” Khandelwal told IANS.

The market sentiments are positive despite the gold rates going up from Rs 30,000/tola in ‘dhanteras’ 2017 to around Rs 31,500/tola this year, which portends good for the industry.

Adopting a cautionery stand, World Gold Council Managing Director P.R. Somasundaram said that though the feedback from the industry suggests good footfalls, “the demand could be moderate” in view of the recent sharp increase in gold prices.

“Organised players seem better places, a trend that has become evident in recent years after a spate of transparency measures. Digital wallets and online buying also seem to be growing in popularity, though they are relatively small,” Somasundaram said.
