‘Is that bird dropping?’, Divya Spandana’s tweet on PM Modi sparks controversy

November 2, 2018 by Nasheman

“Is that bird dropping?”, read the tweet from the chief of Congress’ social media and digital communications, Divya Spandana. The question was accompanied by a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wearing a white kurta, at the foot of the newly inaugurated statue of Sardar Patel.

The question incited a sharp response from Twitter users and BJP members in particular who questioned her cryptic tweet and accused her of likening the Prime Minister to bird dropping.
The BJP retorted by saying that “it is the values of the Congress that are dropping.”
Divya later retweeted a message that claimed that her tweet was referring to actual bird droppings. However, she refused to clarify on what she meant by the tweet and appeared to distance the tweet from the Congress party by claiming that it was her views.
While Divya’s tweet has been termed a new low in political discourse by Twitter users, she has had to endure tweets by Twitter users who posted photographs of Divya with distasteful comments.

This is not the first time that one of Divya’s tweets has become a controversy. In September, she was booked for sedition by Lucknow Police for referring to PM Modi as ‘a thief’ in a tweet.

She had tweeted a photoshopped photograph of PM Modi painting the word ‘chor’ on his wax statue with the hashtag “Chor PM Chup Hai”.

Divya took charge of the Congress’ social media cell a year ago to ramp up the party’s fledgling social media presence. She has courted controversy on several occasions for her criticism of the BJP, particularly Prime Minister Modi.

Amritsar train tragedy: Sidhu fails to appear before inquiry commission

November 2, 2018 by Nasheman

Punjab Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday failed to appear before the one-man commission conducting an inquiry into the Amritsar train tragedy in which 60 people were killed on October 19.

Sidhu’s wife, Navjot Kaur, who was also summoned by the commission, however, appeared on Friday and gave her statement.

Sidhu, who was present in Amritsar on Friday, later held a press conference and justified his absence.

“I wrote to him (probe commissioner) that I was not in Punjab from October 16-20. So there are no inputs that can actually add to your proceedings,” Sidhu told the media.

Senior IAS officer B. Purushartha, who is conducting the magisterial inquiry in Amritsar, had asked the Sidhu couple to appear before the commission on November 2.

Regarding Sidhu not appearing before the inquiry commission, Navjot Kaur told the media after appearing before the commission at the Improvement Trust building that “He is at home only. He had a programme to distribute cheques (to families of victims of the train tragedy). He has sent whatever statement he wanted to make (to the commission).”

Navjot Kaur, a former legislator and ex chief parliamentary secretary, was the chief guest at the Dussehra festival near Joda Phatak when the DMU (diesel multiple unit) train crushed those standing on the railway tracks.

Sixty people lost their lives and an equal number were injured in the train tragedy.

Opposition leaders and locals alleged that Navjot Kaur fled the scene after the train mowed down the people.

There are allegations that the event was organised without mandatory permissions, which had to be given by the municipal corporation which falls under the local government department headed by Sidhu.

The main organiser of the event, Saurabh Madan Mithoo, is a close political aide of the Sidhu couple.

Mithoo, his family members and other organisers were questioned by the inquiry commission in Amritsar, over 250 km from here, on Tuesday for over four hours.

The commission has been asked to submit its report within four weeks.

BJP asks EC to postpone Ramanagara bye-poll

November 2, 2018 by Nasheman

State Election Commission sources, however, told media it is highly unlikely that the poll would be countermanded.

The BJP in Karnataka, which was stumped on Thursday by the withdrawal of its candidate in the Ramanagara Assembly bye-poll just two days ahead of the election, has now sought the polling to be postponed in the seat. To this effect, its leader Chi Na Ramu, the party’s National General Secretary of SC Morcha, wrote to the Election Commission of India. The party also sought action against its candidate L Chandrashekar, son of Congress MLC CM Lingappa.

However, a top state Election Commission officer told media it is highly unlikely that the poll would be countermanded.

“We have not received any instructions from ECI. I don’t think there is a chance of elections being countermanded. The withdrawal from polls by a candidate after the notified date of withdrawal (October 20) is unofficial. His (Chandrashekar’s) name and symbols will be in the EVMs. His party had supported till the last day of withdrawal of candidature and that is why his name is already in the ballot,” the officer told media.

Other than Ramanagara, bye-polls will be held at Assembly segment of Jamakhandi and three Lok Sabha segments – Shimoga, Ballari and Mandya on Saturday as a precursor of sorts to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The results will be declared on November 6. The Congress-JD(S) have decided to put up a united front against the BJP after forming a post-poll alliance in May.

On Thursday, in a major embarrassment for the opposition party in the state, Chandrashekar retired from the elections in an unprecedented move and announced that he is rejoining the Congress. “I take back my nomination and I support Congress-JDS candidate Anita Kumaraswamy,” Chandrashekar stated in a letter. He said the “disinterest” shown by BJP’s state president BS Yeddyurappa for campaigning in the constituency forced him to quit.

The bye-poll in this seat was necessitated as Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy won both the seats of Ramanagara and Channapatna in the May state polls, but chose to vacate this seat. Chandrashekar was the BJP’s choice against JD(S)’s Anitha Kumaraswamy, the wife of the CM. The Congress has decided to lend support to the JD(S) as part of the continuing alliance since the Assembly elections.

Incidentally, CM HD Kumaraswamy has won for the fourth straight time from Ramanagara since 2004. According to poll analysts, with the Congress and JD(S) joining hands, it was realistically impossible for the BJP to manage a victory despite the rivalry between the grassroot workers of the JD(S) and Congress.

Service centre staff allegedly withdrawn 91,000 from Delhi man’s Paytm

November 2, 2018 by Nasheman

A man in Delhi has been allegedly been duped of more than Rs. 91,000 from his Paytm account after he gave his phone to a service centre without deleting his mobile wallet.

Yusuf Karim, 28, a resident of southeast Delhi’s Kalkaji, has alleged that Rs. 91,000 was withdrawn from his Paytm account allegedly by the staff of a service centre where he had given his mobile phone for repairing.

In his complaint filed, Karim said that when he got back his phone from the service centre, he received an email from Paytm that somebody else had logged into his account.

Later, he received another message that his registered email address on Paytm was changed and Rs. 19,999 were transferred to an unknown account from a different number which was fraudulently registered in his name, police said.

After that, seven transactions were made from the victim’s account and Rs. 80,498 was withdrawn, they said.

The victim alleged the engineers of the mobile service company who were repairing his phone have done such fraudulent transactions. He also claimed that despite several requests, Paytm did not block his account.

A response from the mobile wallet giant is awaited.

The accused were identified as Manjeet (38), husband of the deceased, his girlfriend Angel Gupta alias Shashi Prabha (26) and Rajeev (40), they added.

Manjeet was in a relationship with Angel and his wife, Sunita, objected to it, so they conspired to eliminate her, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said.

She is survived by a 16-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son, they said.

Akbar denies rape allegations, says relationship ‘consensual’

November 2, 2018 by Nasheman

Former Union Minister M.J. Akbar on Friday termed allegations of rape by US-based journalist Pallavi Gogoi a “lie” and claimed they had entered into a “consensual relationship”.

Akbar in a statement to ANI said Gogoi’s November 2 article in the Washington Post had detailed “false allegations of rape and violence against me”.

“I have had occasion to read this article and it has become necessary, at this point in time, to bring certain facts to light. Somewhere around 1994, Pallavi Gogoi and I entered into consensual relationship that spanned several months.

“This relationship gave rise to talk and would later cause strife in my home life as well. This consensual relationship ended, perhaps not on best note,” he said.

“People who worked with me and knew both of us have indicated that they would be happy to bear testimony to what is stated above and at no stage did the behaviour of Pallavi Gogoi give any one of them impression that she was working under duress,” he said.

Akbar also said on October 29 the Washington Post forwarded to his lawyers a “series of cryptic and non-specific questions, regarding incidents alleged to have taken place approximately 23 years ago”.

“These allegations were false and were consequently denied,” he added.

November 2, 2018 by Nasheman

Amid firm global cues the key equity indices gained over one per cent during the afternoon trade session on Friday. The Sensex jumped over 600 points to cross the 35,000-mark and the Nifty traded above the 10,500-mark.

Healthy buying was witnessed across all the sectors on the BSE, led by banking, finance and auto counters.

The investors sentiments were boosted on the back of declining crude oil prices, as the benchmark brent crude prices eased below $74 (73.30) per barrel along with signs of easing trade tension between US and China.

At 12.12 p.m., the S&P BSE Sensex traded 595.19 points up at 35,027.16. It had opened at 34,743.95 from its previous close of 34,431.97.
