BJP Plans to Use Military Planes to Poach Congress-JDS MLAs’: Kumaraswamy

September 20, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy dropped a bombshell on Thursday, claiming that the BJP was planning to use “military logistics” to poach Congress and JDS MLAs to topple his government in the state.

Launching a scathing attack on state BJP president BS Yeddyurappa, he said that the desperate BJP was using every trick in the book to engineer mass defections from the coalition to form its government by hook or crook.

“The BJP and Yeddyurappa have crossed all limits. They are telling some of our MLAs that they will take them to Mumbai and Pune and bring them back to Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru for a floor test by military planes. What is this?” he asked while speaking to reporters.

He further alleged that the BJP has offered Rs 5 crore in cash among other things to MLAs. “Yeddyurappa and the BJP maintain that they are not toppling the government and they will form the government only if my government goes. In reality they are doing everything,” he said.

Kumaraswamy said the BJP told his MLAs that 18 MLAs from Congress and JDS have already agreed to defect and once the number crosses 20, they will be shifted to Mumbai and Pune. He said the BJP government in Maharashtra has agreed to shelter the MLAs.

He described Yeddyurappa as the “father of percentage politics” in Karnataka and the “most corrupt” politician till date in the state.

“My family has a long history of serving Karnataka people. We have been in politics for the past 60 years. We have always tried to protect the resources of the state. Yeddyurappa has looted the same resources when he was chief minister. What moral rights does he have to call me and others corrupt,” he angrily asked.

He dared Yeddyurappa to use central agencies to “fix” him and others from JDS and Congress. Kumaraswamy warned Yeddyurappa that the state government could do anything to him if he really wants to trouble him.

“Yeddyurappa says he has central government in his hands and can do anything to us. I want to tell him that we have the state government. We can also do anything”, he said.

According to Kumaraswamy, the BJP is holding a series of meetings at various places to unseat him.

He warned the BJP of a mass uprising in Karnataka if they don’t put a full stop to “illegal and unethical” operations. “The attitude of the BJP is sickening. The people are watching them closely. If they continue like this, perhaps the people will rise against them. There will be a mass movement against them across the state. The BJP will have to pay a heavy price,” he said.

JDS MLA Suresh Gowda also warned the BJP that they could also poach MLAs from the saffron party if they don’t stop approaching the ruling party’s MLAs.

Yeddyurappa, earlier in the day, had made yet another blistering attack on Kumaraswamy calling him the most “corrupt” chief minister whose family is into only moneymaking business.

Even though the coalition leaders claim that the government is safe and they have resolved all internal issues, some fear that the BJP might launch an all-out attack anytime.

Kumaraswamy met Water Resources minister DK Shivakumar at a private hospital in the morning. Shivakumar, who was charged with money laundering by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday, has been admitted to hospital for food poisoning.

Met raises storm alert in Bay of Bengal to a deep depression

September 20, 2018 by Nasheman

The low-pressure area over East-Central Bay of Bengal has become ‘well-marked,’ and the latest outlook indicates that it would go on to become not just a depression but further into a deep depression.

A deep depression is second only to a tropical cyclone in intensity, and, in this manner, the ‘low’ would have strengthened three times rapidly to attain this status by Thursday.

Landfall by Thursday night
The system would move west-north-west towards North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts and cross the coast between Kalingapatnam and Puri during late Thursday night or early Friday morning.

India Met Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain over the North-Eastern States, Coastal Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday. Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning may line up over over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Interior Karnataka, Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra.

‘Rough’ to ‘very rough’ (wave heights between eight ft and 20 ft) have been warned of over South and Central Bay, Andaman Sea and along and off Andhra Pradesh, Bengal and Odisha coasts. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.

As for tomorrow (Thursday), the rains may grow in intensity with heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by extremely heavy falls lashing Odisha and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Heavy rain forecast
It would be heavy to very heavy over Chhattisgarh and Telangana, while being heavy over the plains of Bengal, Jharkhand, Rayalaseema and Karnataka. Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning is likely at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Interior Karnataka.

Forecasts for the next three days is as follows.

Friday: Heavy to very heavy rain over Odisha, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh, while it will be heavy over Assam, Meghalaya, plains of Bengal, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Telangana and Karnataka.

‘Rough’ to ‘very rough’ sea conditions are possible over West-Central and North Bay and along and off Andhra Pradesh,West Bengal and Odisha coasts.

Saturday: Heavy to very heavy rain over East Rajasthan; heavy over Assam, Meghalaya, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha.

Withdrawal on hold
Saturday: Heavy to very heavy rain for Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and heavy rain over West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. In this manner, the rains penetrating right into West Rajasthan would have forced the withdrawal scheme for the South-West monsoon from Rajasthan back to the drawing board.

Earlier in the morning, the US Joint Typhoon Warning Centre had located the causative ‘low’ over East-Central Bay of Bengal to 714 km South of Chittagong in Bangladesh.

IMD had not referred to the scope strengthening of the depression until Wednesday noon, apparently because the sea-surface had not warmed much beyond the threshold 27-29 deg Celsius. But vertical wind shear values, which refer to sudden change in wind direction with height that unsettles a building system, are low to moderate at 37 km/hr.

They tend to be high during an active monsoon which is why tropical cyclones are rare during that phase of the monsoon. But cyclones tend to develop during the monsoon transition phase. For this reason, the sea behaviour is closely monitored during the months of May (just ahead of the onset of the South-West Monsoon) and September-October (ahead of the North-East monsoon).

Hebbal flyover developed a minor crack on Tuesday evening.

September 20, 2018 by Nasheman

The Hebbal traffic police informed the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) officials, consultants and experts who rushed to the trouble spot on Wednesday morning.

The problem is on the arm leading towards Hennur from the airport. Motorists plying on the stretch feel a thud and vibrations.

“This is the first time we have come across such an expansion joint problem at any flyover. To decide on the next course of action and ensure that there are no untoward incidents, a detailed report has been sought from all stakeholders. A meeting will be held on Saturday. Then the next course of action, including, whether traffic needs to be diverted, will be decided,” said an expert who inspected the site.

However the BDA officials assured of quick fix for this issue.

The Hebbal flyover links Bengaluru to north Bengaluru and the airport and is part of the flyover maintained by the National Highways Authority of India (NHIA).

14 MLAs show interest to join BJP says BSY

September 20, 2018 by Nasheman

BJP organised party legislature meet on Wednesday.

BS Yeddyurappa was authorized to take all major decisions on forming the new government at the state.

As per the information available it has reported said that, BSY claimed over 14 MLAs are showing interest to join the BJP party. “Few senior MLAs openly opposed the proposal of Operation Kamala, while the majority of the MLAs favoured such a move,” he added.

“BSY informed the meeting that he is fielding three candidates in the upcoming state legislative council election. This is to ensure that other party MLAs will cross vote to the BJP candidates and humiliate CM HDK,” he said.

Triple talaq ordinance undemocratic: CPI-M

September 20, 2018 by Nasheman

Terming the ‘triple talaq’ ordinance cleared by the Union Cabinet “undemocratic and uncalled for”, the CPI-M on Thursday said that it tantamounts to bypassing Parliament where a bill on the issue is pending.

“The ordinance brought about by the central government is uncalled for and is motivated by considerations other than the welfare of Muslim women,” Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) said in a statement here.

“The bill is pending in the Rajya Sabha and requires full discussions, including reference to a Select Committee. The ordinance is an undemocratic step of bypassing Parliament,” it said.

The CPI-M said that ‘talaq-e-biddat’, or instant divorce, has already been declared illegal by the Supreme Court, but the Narendra Modi government brought a bill that has made a “civil wrong a criminal offence” with the prescription of a three-year jail term for the offender.

“It is an ill-conceived measure that will not help protect the affected women. There are other flaws in the bill that need to be rectified. This ordinance is designed to serve the political interests of the ruling party (BJP) and cannot be accepted. Parliament should adopt a revised legislation in this regard,” the CPI-M said.

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the ordinance that makes ‘triple talaq’ a criminal offence. The ordinance will be sent to the President for approval.

It comes against the backdrop of the government’s inability to get the bill on the issue passed in the last monsoon session of Parliament.

The government said it brought the ordinance as instances of ‘triple talaq’ “continue unabated” in spite of the Supreme Court declaring it unconstitutional. The Lok Sabha has passed the bill, which is now pending in the Rajya Sabha.

Ready to face torture, confident will come out clean: DK Shivkumar

September 20, 2018 by Nasheman

BENGALURU, INDIA – SEPTEMBER 19: D K Shivkumar, minister of Irrigation and Medical education in Karnataka government along with his brother D K Suresh during a press conference after ED initiates probe against him, at his official residence on September 19, 2018 in Bengaluru, India.

Rejecting the BJP’s allegation that he had paid money to the Congress’s central leadership, Karnataka minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday accused the BJP of misusing central agencies to harass him and pull down the Congress-JDS government in the state.

Pleading innocence, the high-profile minister said he was not involved in hawala transactions and was ready to face “any type of torture” by central agencies. He asserted he would come out clean.

DK Shivakumar’s repudiation came after a BJP spokesman in Delhi demanded that the top Congress leadership respond to the purported “confessional statements” made to the Income Tax department by his alleged associates claiming the money trail in a hawala network led to the Congress headquarters.

BJP spokesman Sambit Patra also referred to diaries allegedly recovered from Congress leaders in the state claiming “entries of money running up to Rs 600 crore were shown against SG and RG among others”.

Patra alleged the acronyms referred to top leaders in the opposition party and demanded that Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his predecessor Sonia Gandhi come out and respond.

“He is simply using RG names, SG names. Where is RG name and SG name? I want to make it very clear that no SG or RG names are there. No way we are connected. They are unnecessarily trying to damage the name of our leaders. Let them (Enforcement Directorate) call me,” he said.

Hitting out at the BJP spokesperson, DK Shivakumar sought to know why he was dragging Congress leaders into controversy.

“Unnecessarily you are bringing my party leaders (into the controversy). I have not paid any money to my party leaders, nor to the party. If anything is there, it is me and my party. They have to ask me, I have to reply to them. I need not reply to any of my BJP friends,” he said.

At a press conference in Delhi, Patra showed the purported confessional statements of Anjaneya Hanumanthaiah, an employee of the Karnataka Bhavan in the national capital, and claimed the documents were the proof of Congress’s involvement in a Hawala network.

“We have statements of DK Shivakumar’s driver, who told the I-T Department about how money in kilograms were sent to AICC. We now know why Congress party was crying during demonetisation,” Patra said.

DK Shivakumar asserted, “I am ready to face any kind of consequences or any type of torture they (central agencies) want to give me. I am confident that I will come out clean because I am a law-abiding citizen.”

Hitting back at Patra for referring to the abbreviated names in the diary, Shivakumar said, “What diaries are you talking about? Did you forget the Jain diaries, Advani diaries, or Modi Sahab’s diary?”

DK Shivakumar claimed he was being subjected to harassment by central agencies ever since he hosted Gujarat Congress MLAs during Rajya Sabha elections when the party leaders felt the BJP may poach on them in August last year.

Sonia Gandhi’s close aide Ahmed Patel was contesting the election which he narrowly managed to win.

The Karnataka minister also linked his “harassment” to the BJP’s alleged attempts to destabilise the coalition government in the state.

“These are your daydreams Mr Yeddyurappa (the state BJP chief and leader of the opposition). We have the numbers,” asserted DK Shivakumar, adding these “blackmailing tactics will not work”.

The Enforcement Directorate has registered a money laundering case against DK Shivakumar and a few others for alleged tax evasion and hawala transactions.

Rohit praises bowlers after win over Pakistan

September 20, 2018 by Nasheman

Stand-in captain Rohit Sharma praised his bowlers after India thrashed arch rivals Pakistan by eight wickets in their Group A clash of the Asia Cup cricket tournament here on Wednesday.

Asked to field first, three-wicket hauls from pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar and part-time off-spinner Kedar Jadhav enabled India to restrict Pakistan to a paltry 162.

Bhuvneshwar returned figures of 3/15 while Jadhav got 3/23. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah also picked up a couple of wickets.

“Right from the start, we were quite disciplined. We wanted to learn from the mistakes which we made in the last game. Today was a great game for the bowling department because I knew the conditions weren’t great for it. But we kept the conditions aside and did the job. We stuck to our plans,” Rohit said after the match.

“Lots of improvements from the last game, spinners kept it tight, got the odd breakthroughs. The bowlers took wickets early as well. It was important to do that because we wanted to make sure not to make things easy for them. We spoke about not giving room to the batsmen and it worked,” he added.

“The first few overs were disciplined and the spinners took over. Once they had a partnership, we discussed not to panic and it was important to just stick to the plans.”

Rohit, who took over the captaincy after regular captain Virat Kohli decided to skip the tournament, picked out Jadhav for special praise.

“He (Jadhav) has been working on his bowling, takes his bowling very seriously. Every now and then, he does the job which is crucial,” he said.

Rohit also played a crucial role in India’s victory. He smashed a quickfire half-century and his 86-run opening stand with Shikhar Dhawan saw India overhaul the target with a whopping 21 overs to spare.

Rohit plundered 52 runs off 39 deliveries, hitting six boundaries and three sixes along the way.

“Enjoyed the little innings that I played, got out to a great delivery. We haven’t played here much and we have understood how to plan on such pitches. Opening partnership sets the key on such tracks and it was a fine finish by Dinesh and Rayudu,” he said.

Asia Cup: India overpower Pakistan by eight wickets

September 20, 2018 by Nasheman

A strong bowling performance followed by some power-packed batting saw India thrash arch rivals Pakistan by eight wickets in their Group A clash of the Asia Cup cricket tournament here on Wednesday.

In reply, a quickfire half-century by Rohit Sharma and his 86-run opening stand with Shikhar Dhawan saw India comfortably overhaul the target with a whopping 21 overs to spare.

Rohit plundered 52 runs off 39 deliveries, hitting six boundaries and three sixes along the way.

Dhawan scored 46 runs off 54 balls before a loose shot to a Faheem Ashraf delivery handed an easy catch to Babar Azam at point.

Following the duo’s departure, Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthick ensured that India crossed the line without losing any more wickets.

Earlier, the Pakistan batsmen never really found any momentum as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Pakistan got off to a slow start and could only manage 25/2 in the first 10 overs.

Bhuvneshwar sent back openers Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman early on to leave Pakistan struggling with two wickets down after 4.1 overs with just two runs on the board.

Shoiab Malik and Babar Azam then got going well and negotiated the spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal — who went wicketless — and Kuldeep well. The pair stitched together an 82-run stand for the third wicket.

Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav triggered Pakistan’s slide with a brilliantly executed wrong un’ that outfoxed Pakistan’s best batsman Babar Azam (47) when he was looking good along with Shoaib Malik (43).

Jadhav removed Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed (6) around the halfway mark of the first innings before accounting for Asif Ali (9) and Shadab Khan (8). That saw Pakistan, who were relatively comfortably placed at 85/2 at one point, collapsing to 121/7.

From then on, Pakistan could never recover as Mohammed Amir (18 not out) and Faheem Ashraf (21) joined hands for a 37-run partnership towards the end before Jasprit Bumrah (2/23) dismissed Ashraf and Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah got rid of Hasan Ali (1) and Usman Khan (0) respectively.

Malik hit the first six of the innings in the 13th over off Kuldeep and three overs later got a reprieve when Mahendra Singh Dhoni dropped him behind the stumps off Hardik Pandya.

Moments later, Pandya had to be stretchered off after suffering what turned out to be a lower-back injury during his follow through. Pandya clutched the floor and could not get up, needing attention from the medical team.

Just when the partnership seemed to be growing, Kuldeep once again underlined why he is a wily customer and can be unplayable at times with a ripper of a googly that pitched on middle and turned away from the batsman at the last moment to knock over his off-stump.

Malik then was dropped again at deep midwicket off Kuldeep as Bhuvneshwar failed to read a slog sweep in which the ball went high up in the air with the pacer misjuding the direction and over-running.

Captain Sarfraz, who had joined Malik at the crease, did not stay long as Manish Pandey took a superb catch at wide long-on off Jadhav.

Malik was run out soon after, failing to convert his start into a big one as the slide started for Pakistan.

Jadhav then added to his rivals’ misery by picking up the wickets of Asif Ali and Shadab Khan as Pakistan failed to string together partnerships.

Amir and Ashraf tried hard to get important runs towards the end but could not bat out the full 50 overs.

Brief scores:

Pakistan: 162 in 43.1 overs (Babar Azam 47, Shoaib Malik 43; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/15, Kedar Jadhav 3/23) lost to India: 164/2 in 29 overs (Rohit Sharma 52, Shikhar Dhawan 46) by eight wickets.

Walking just 35 minutes daily can reduce stroke risk in elderly

September 20, 2018 by Nasheman

Older adults can prevent their risk of strokes by taking a daily stroll for just 35 minutes a day or four hours a week, say researchers.

Indulging in moderate physical activity, such as swimming, brisk walking, or running two to three hours a week may also reduce the severity of strokes than people who are physically inactive.

“Stroke is a major cause of serious disability, so finding ways to prevent stroke or reduce the disability caused by stroke are important,” said Katharina S. Sunnerhagen, from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

“While exercise benefits health in many ways, our research suggests that even simply getting in a small amount of physical activity each week may have a big impact later by possibly reducing the severity of a stroke,” she added.

For the study, published in the journal Neurology, the team identified 925 people with an average age of 73 who had a stroke.

Of the 481 people who were physically inactive, 354 or 73 per cent had mild stroke. Of the 384 who engaged in light physical activity, 330 or 85 per cent had mild stroke. Of the 59 people who engaged in moderate physical activity, 53 or 89 per cent had mild stroke.

People who engaged in light to moderate physical activity before their stroke were twice as likely to have a mild stroke rather than a moderate or severe stroke when compared to people who were physically inactive, the researchers said.

“There is a growing body of evidence that physical activity may have a protective effect on the brain and our research adds to that evidence,” Sunnerhagen said.

The study does not prove that physical activity reduces stroke severity; it only shows an association, she noted.
