Manmohan seeks opposition unity to defeat BJP

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi Urging the opposition to unite in their shared desire to defeat the BJP in the next Lok Sabha elections, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday hit out at the Modi government for the crises-like all-round situation in the country due to rising fuel prices and farm distress.

Manmohan Singh said the BJP-led central government had “miserably” failed in controlling fuel prices and fulfilling the promises made to the people before the 2014 elections.

“Circumstances show that the situation has gone beyond control now. Farmers, businessmen, youth are facing crises in their respective fields. The government has failed miserably in fulfilling the promises made to common people.

“The time has come to change the party in the Centre and this will happen very soon,” he said, addressing a protest rally at the Ramlila ground here.

“The parties opposing the present government should forget their differences and come together for maintaining the unity and secular identity of the country. We need to draw the collective benefit of the unity shown (here),” he said.

The former Prime Minister along with UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi joined the protest march that started from Rajghat and culminated at Ramlila ground.

The march as part of a nationwide protest, or “Bharat Bandh”, was led by Congress President Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders.

The former Prime Minister appreciated the presence of around 20 political opposition parties joining the Congress in the protest against the government.

He said it was a significant moment ahead of the general elections next year and “we should take advantage of this (unity) and bring about a movement” in the country.

The protest was called by the Congress and Left parties against the spiralling cost of petrol and diesel which have reached record levels.

The protest was supported by several opposition parties including the Janata Dal-Secular, Trinamool Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Nationalist Congress Party, Loktantrik Janata Dal, Rashtriya Lok Dal, All India United Democratic Front, Revolutionary Socialist Party and Aam Aadmi Party among others.

Rahul leads Opposition’s ‘Bharat Bandh’ protest against fuel price hike

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi A united Opposition, led by Congress President Rahul Gandhi, on Monday staged a foot march here in support of a nationwide shutdown protest or ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by his party against rising fuel prices.

The 1.8-km march was held between Rajghat and Zakir Husain College.

Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), Trinamool Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD), Rashtriya Lok Dal, All India United Democratic Front, Revolutionary Socialist Party and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were among the opposition parties that participated in protest.

The Congress President paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial at Rajghat.

He also offered water at the memorial which he brought from Kailash Mansarovar yatra before joining other opposition leaders including Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ashok Gehlot, Anand Sharma, Ambika Soni, Ahmed Patel, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Shailja Kumari, Meira Kumar, Jairam Ramesh; NCP’s Tariq Anwar, LJD’s Sharad Yadav and RJD’s Manoj Jha in the nationwide shutdown.

This was Gandhi’s first public appearance since he returned from the yatra. He had embarked on the yatra on August 31.

Delhi’s ruling AAP, which had refused to join the shutdown, also sent its leader Sanjay Singh.

The protest has been called by Congress and Left parties against the spiralling petrol and diesel prices which have reached record levels.

After the end of the march, all the opposition leaders gathered at an Indian Oil petrol pump near the Ramlila Maidan where UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh joined them.

Later, over 200 political leaders and supporters gathered at the ground from where Manmohan Singh and others spoke against the Central government over its failure to curb the price hike.

“The runaway prices of fuel and the free fall in the value of the Rupee shows that the Modi government has completely failed in managing the economy,” the Congress had tweeted earlier in the day.

Bharat Bandh called by Congress on Sep 10

September 8, 2018 by Nasheman

The ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by the Congress and other organisations on September 10, is likely to evoke good response in Karnataka where the party is a coalition partner with Janata Dal (S).

Various organisations including AITUC and other left party organisations like CITU have called for the shut off agitation and JD(S) is most likely to extend its support, sources said here on Saturday.

The agitation is against high taxes slapped by the Centre and most state governments that had followed suit by charging heavy duties on motor fuel that resulted in petrol prices spiraling to Rs 82 per liter in recent weeks and diesel price over Rs 72 in Karnataka.

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy had however indicated that the Karnataka government would explore possibilities of bringing down the state taxes on the motor spirit, while speaking at a function in Dakshina Kannada on Friday, saying that if the Centre did not respond to the common people’s call, his government will respond positively.

The bandh will be supported by state public sector bus operator KSRTC employees besides Ola and Uber drivers and owners have also extended their support and the taxi service will be seriously hit on Monday.

KPCC President Dinesh Gundurao who led a motorcycle rally against the union government for not reducing the Petrol and Diesel prices today said that Congress will extend its support to the agitation demanding that the BJP government at the Centre that had increased the taxes by 118 per cent since 2014 and rates of diesel by whopping 424 per cent should be brought down.

”We from Congress will launch a major protest against the union government’s apathy.

The need of the hour is for the country to bring down the prices of the petroleum products which will, otherwise, affect the economy badly,” he said.

Central taxes on petrol amounts to Rs 20.72 and state tax at Rs 17.03 per litre in Karnataka, while on diesel costs the consumer Rs 18.67 and Rs 10.59, respectively, according to sources.

CM Kumaraswamy Says BJP Using ‘Dirty Tricks’ to Topple Alliance

September 8, 2018 by Nasheman

Former Karnataka chief minister and BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa rushed back to Bangalore from Delhi on Saturday morning amid speculation of renewed efforts by the opposition to topple the JD(S)-Congress government in the state.

Yeddyurappa was in Delhi to attend the two-day meeting of the party national executive when he made an unscheduled journey back to the state capital. Later, he clarified that he returned to attend to a family emergency and that it has nothing to do with state politics.

Trouble for the ruling alliance may come from another quarter: investigations by Enforcement Directorate against powerful Congress minister DK Shivakumar and his brother DK Suresh, who is also a Congress MP.

On Saturday, the brothers told media that the “desperate BJP hungry for power” was trying to “fix” them in a money laundering case to topple the government.

“The state BJP is using ED and Income Tax departments to harass us. They think that the government will collapse if they restrain us. But that will never happen. We will fight back and the government will be safe” said DK Shivakumar.

Speaking to News18, HD Kumaraswamy said that he was aware of the “dirty tricks” used by the BJP to unseat him and his government was not so weak to be demolished like this.

“We have done very well in the recently held Urban Local Body Elections. Congress and JDS together have won over 60% seats and got over 53% votes. The BJP is no longer a leading force in urban areas. If we continue in power till Lok Sabha elections next year, the BJP will bite the dust. That’s why they are back to old tactics. But we are prepared to fight them once again,” he told media.

The Karnataka Assembly has 224 members. At present, two seats are vacant.

The Congress has 79, JDS 36, BSP 1 and 2 Independents together form the ruling coalition, which has 118 MLAs. The BJP has 104 members.

BJP with 104 MLAs in the House can cross the half-way mark if it makes at least 15 legislators from the ruling coalition resign, thereby bringing down the total strength of the House to 107. This would also bring down the halfway mark for majority to 104.

Kumaraswamy has threatened that even he could “engineer” defections from the BJP to JDS, if the saffron party does not stop its “unconstitutional” methods to come to power.

The Karnataka BJP, meanwhile, said the “story of corrupt brothers now stays exposed in front of Kannadigas”.

September 8, 2018 by Nasheman

5th Test: England reach 123/1

September 8, 2018 by Nasheman

England reached 123/1 in their first innings at tea on the opening day of the fifth and final cricket Test against India at the Oval here on Friday.

Veteran opening batsman Alastair Cook (66 not out) and Moeen Ali (23 not out) were at the crease for England at tea as the hosts added 55 runs in the second session without losing any wicket.

Cook, playing in his final international match, registered his 57th fifty in his 161st Test.

The 32-year-old left-hander, who resumed the session with an individual score of 37, got a reprieve at the same score. An away-swigning delivery from paceman Ishant Sharma was poked by Cook but Ajinkya Rahane dropped it at gully in the 31st over.

In the following over, Moeen too got a reprieve while batting on a personal score of 2. The left-hander got a thick edge off Jasprit Bumrah and captain Virat Kohli dropped the left-hander at third slip.

Cook and Moeen, then, batted with strong defences and played riskfree cricket to see off the session. They waited for the loose deliveries to score runs.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who took the wicket of Keaton Jennings (23) in the first session, was dealt with strongly by Cook and Moeen.

Brief scores: England: 123/1 (Alastair Cook 66 not out, Moeen Ali 23 not out, Keaton Jennings 23; Ravindra Jadeja 1/36) vs India at tea on Day 1.
