“The intentions of making India ‘Congress-free’ and ‘opposition-free’ shows the arrogance of BJP. The people have made this nation ‘arrogance-free’ by voting out BJP. At least now, BJP should put some efforts to make this nation ‘problem-free and stop the unwanted ‘travel-spree’,” stated former prime minister and JDS supremo H D Deve Gowda.

As the election results of five states were being announced, BJP at the centre has faced a huge setback.

“This is a democratic country. We have to listen to what the citizens say. Everything what we say does not work. Let ruling BJP think of making India problem-free”, he stated.

Pujara moves to fourth, Bumrah achieves career-high ranking

 Cheteshwar Pujara, whose knocks of 123 and 71 were the cornerstone of India’s victory against Australia in the first Test, moved ahead of Joe Root and David Warner to take the fourth position while pacer Jasprit Bumrah achieved a career-high ranking of 33rd, after his three for 47 and three for 68, in the latest ICC rankings.

Pujara helped India out of a hole in the first innings with a brilliantly crafted hundred and then in the second innings played a vital role in helping the tourists set the Aussies a target of 323.

Bumrah, meanwhile, restricted the hosts to 235 by taking the wickets of Peter Handscomb, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. In the second essay too, he accounted for the dangerous Shaun Marsh, skipper Tim Paine and Cummins.

Kane Williamson also became the first New Zealand batsman and 32nd overall to break the 900-point barrier in the ICC player rankings for Test batsmen following a stellar performance in the third Test against Pakistan, which helped his side win their first away series against the Asian side in 49 years.

Williamson scored 89 and 139 in Abu Dhabi last week, which set up New Zealand’s convincing 123-run victory over Pakistan.

This performance not only helped Williamson win the Player of the Match award, but also earn 37 points in the latest player rankings, which, in turn, has allowed him to leapfrog Australia’s Steve Smith into second position on a career-high 913 points.

Richard Hadlee, ICC’s Cricket Hall of Famer, is the only other New Zealand player – with bat or ball – to reach the 900-point mark in the ICC Test rankings.

While Williamson shone with the bat in Abu Dhabi and was richly rewarded, number-one ranked Virat Kohli managed only three and 34 in his side’s impressive 31-run victory over Australia at the picturesque Adelaide Oval.

As a result, Kohli has conceded 15 points to slip to 920 points, just seven points ahead of Williamson.

With Williamson breathing down Kohli’s neck, the India captain will be under pressure to perform strongly with the bat in the second Test starting in Perth on Friday otherwise he will potentially lose his number-one ranking he has been holding since the Edgbaston Test against England in August.

The other two notable movers from the Adelaide Test are Ajinkya Rahane in 17th (up by two places) and Mitchell Starc in 16th (up by two places).

Amongst the newcomers, Australia’s Marcus Harris has reached the 116th batting position, while amongst the bowlers, off-spinner William Somerville of New Zealand has emerged in 63rd spot and Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi has popped up in 111th place.

Indian-origin man jailed for stabbing pregnant wife in Singapore

 A court here on Tuesday sentenced an Indian origin man to seven years in jail for stabbing his pregnant wife using a knife with a 10-cm long blade.

The incident took place on December 30 last year during which Jayselan N. Chandrasegar, 30, stabbed his 26-year-old wife Mayuri Krishnakumar twice in her abdomen and twice on her lower back, causing her to suffer puncture wounds. She was taken to hospital and was discharged after a few days.

The unborn baby was unhurt in the attack, the Straits Times reported.

According to the report, Chandrasegar flew into a rage after he spotted his pregnant wife, who used to be a sex worker, talking to a man he assumed was a pimp. He stabbed her and fled the scene.

Besides the jail term, Chandrasegar was also punished with six strokes of the cane.

He pleaded guilty to one count of causing grievous hurt to his wife with a weapon, and one count of failing to provide his urine sample after he was caught for suspected drug-related offences.

The court was told that the accused was overly possessive and distrustful of his wife as her former boyfriend was apparently trying to reconnect with her. He had banned the victim from going out of their house.

Later, when the woman informed her husband of her pregnancy, he refused to believe that the child was his and accused her of infidelity, the report said.

The accused’s wife later ran away from their house due to his verbal abuse and sought refuge with her friends.

Before this incident, Chandrasegar was caught for suspected drug-related offences.

Prior to the verdict, the defence lawyer pleaded for a jail term of between five and five and a half years for Chandrasegar, saying that the accused’s wife had forgiven him and the couple were still married to each other.

1984 riots: HC seeks police response to convict’s plea

 The Delhi High Court on Tuesday asked the Delhi Police to file its response to a petition by a convict in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, challenging the capital punishment awarded to him.

The court was hearing Yashpal Singh’s plea against the conviction and the death penalty for killing a man in South Delhi’s Mahipalpur area on November 1, 1984.

A bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal, which has listed the matter for further hearing on December 19, has also asked Singh to file his response to the police reference seeking confirmation of the death sentence.

The court will also hear Singh’s bail plea on the next date of hearing.

In November, a court convicted Singh and Naresh Sherawat for murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons.

Sherawat was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The two had killed Hardev Singh and Avtar Singh in Mahipalpur area during the riots that followed the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The violence claimed hundreds of lives, mostly in Delhi.

On a complaint by the victim’s brother Santokh Singh, the police lodged a case. But in 1994, the police wanted to close the case citing lack of evidence.

The case was reopened by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

MNF wins Mizoram, Congress’ last Northeast state

 Securing an absolute majority in the 40-member Mizoram Assembly, the MNF on Tuesday returned to power after a decade, crushing the Congress and ousting it from power in the last Northeastern state it ruled.

The Mizo National Front (MNF), which got only five seats in the 2013 Assembly polls, secured 21 seats and was leading in five more while the ruling Congress won only five seats.

The Congress had taken power in the state in both 2008 and 2013 elections. It won 34 seats in the last election.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made its entry into the Mizoram Assembly winning the Tuichawng seat.

Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla lost both the constituencies (Champhai South and Serchhip) he contested — to MNF’s T.J. Lalnuntluanga and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) President Lalduhoma respectively.

MNF supremo and Chief Ministerial candidate Zoramthanga was elected for a fifth term from Aizawl East-I, defeating Independent candidate K. Sapdanga.

Buddha Dhan Chakma, a Minister in the Congress government, who just before the November 28 polls joined the BJP, won in Chakma tribal-dominated Tuichawng constituency defeating his MNF rival by 1,594 votes.

Five independents won and three others were leading.

Former IPS officer and security in-charge of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) chief Lalduhoma defeated outgoing Chief Minister Thanhawla in Serchhip by 410 votes. Lalduhoma quit the Congress two years ago before forming the ZPM.

Popular Aizawl Football Club (Aizawl FC) owner Robert Romawia Royte, who contested on MNF ticket from Aizawl East-II, also won.

The BJP had undertaken intense efforts to oust the Congress in Mizoram after forming governments on its own or in alliance in the others in the Northeast.

The MNF, a constituent of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), ruled Mizoram for 10 years — 1998-2003 and 2003-2008.

However, both the BJP and MNF fielded candidates separately in 40 and 39 seats respectively this time.

RBI not dependent on one individual: Niti Aayog
Downplaying Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Urjit Patel’s resignation, Niti Aayog vice-chairman Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday said the central bank is a professional institution and is not dependent on one individual.

“RBI is such a professional institution, a long standing institution that the business will continue. It’s not as if it is dependent on any one particular individual,” Kumar said on the sidelines of 15th Global Inclusive Finance India summit here.

Patel resigned from his position on Monday after a tiff with the government on liquidity issue and matters related to RBI’s autonomy. The stand-off came out in public domain in October after RBI Deputy Governor Viral Acharya flagged the concern.

However, Kumar expressed his faith in the RBI’s institutional capabilities and said the government will take necessary steps to maintain business as usual.

“Rest assured the government will do whatever is required to make it business as usual… RBI’s institutional capabilities are very strong and they will do whatever is required for the markets and economy.

“The government, I am sure, is seized of the matter and will take care,” he said.

Kumar added: “The Governor has done amazing work in the last two years that he has been here”.

Equity market gains on BJP’s lead in MP

 Indian stock indices bounced back into the green as election trends on Tuesday noon showed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took a narrow lead in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections after trailing to the Congress earlier.

The S&P BSE Sensex, which had fallen over 500 points during the morning session, traded at 34,988.62 points around noon, higher by 28.29 points or 0.08 per cent from the previous close.

The Nifty50 on the National Stock Exchange traded at 10,503.30 points, higher by 14.85 points or 0.14 per cent from the previous close.

According to analysts, market indices pared losses due to short covering and buying at lower levels.

“Markets would swing till around noon based on leads positions in Madhya Pradesh as the other four states are showing clear winners,” HDFC Securities’ Retail Research Head Deepak Jasani told IANS.

On the currency front, the Indian rupee weakened to 72 against the US dollar from its previous close of 71.34.

“Election results are not going the BJP way. But the rupee has recovered from the opening losses as central bank intervention may be occurring,” said Anindya Banerjee, Deputy Vice President for Currency and Interest Rates with Kotak Securities.

“We could see more volatility and USDINR can trade within a wide range of 71.70 and 72.50 on spot.”

Will get ‘full majority’ in MP: Kamal Nath

 Congress leader Kamal Nath on Tuesday said his party will form a government in Madhya Pradesh with a “full majority” in the 230-member Assembly.

“The party will form the government with full majority,” he told reporters here. His remarks came amid a sea-saw battle between the Congress and the ruling BJP.

According to Election Commission figures, the Congress was leading in 113 seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has ruled Madhya Pradesh for 15 years, in 106 seats even as officials counted millions of votes.

West Bengal, Bihar, Karnataka CMs congratulate KCR

Chief Ministers of West Bengal, Bihar and Karnataka on Tuesday congratulated their Telangana counterpart K. Chandrashekar Rao on his ruling TRS party’s massive win in the state’s Assembly elections.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Karnataka Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy telephoned the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) President to convey their congratulations.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, YSR Congress Party President and leader of opposition in Andhra Pradesh Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy and Sarada Peetam head Swaroopanandendra Saraswati also congratulated Rao.

KCR’s nephew retains Siddipet seat with 1.20 lakh margin

 Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) President K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s nephew T. Harish Rao created a record of sorts in the Telangana Assembly elections by winning the Siddipet seat by over 1.20 lakh votes.

Harish, who was Irrigation Minister in KCR’s cabinet, defeated his nearest rival Bhavani Marikanti of Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) with a majority of 1,20,650 votes.

Associated with the TRS since it was floated by KCR in 2001, Harish has won this seat for the sixth consecutive time. He was first elected from Siddipet in the by-elections in 2004 after the seat was vacated by KCR. Since then, Harish has maintained a firm grip over the constituency in erstwhile Medak district.

The 46-year-old has increased his margin of victory with every election. In 2014, he was re-elected with a majority of over 95,000 votes, one of the highest in the state.
