Indian Ministers cross over to Pakistan for Kartarpur Corridor ceremony

November 28, 2018 by Nasheman

Union Ministers Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Hardeep Puri on Wednesday crossed over to Pakistan through the Attari-Wagah joint check post between India and her neighbour for the Kartarpur Corridor ceremony, and termed it a “historic step”.

Both Ministers will represent India when Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will later perform the ground breaking ceremony for the Kartarpur Corridor project near the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara, where Sikhism’s founder, Guru Nanak Dev, spent the last 18 years of his life.

“I am going there to offer prayers to the first Guru at a place where he spent the last days of his life.

“I have not been invited by anyone but I am going there as a Sikh,” a visibly emotional Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Badal told the media here some 30 km from Amritsar as she crossed over to Pakistan.

“This is a historic occasion. The Kartarpur Corridor has been a long-pending demand of the Sikh community. I am privileged to be going there to offer prayers.

“This is a significant measure among the several measures announced by the Government of India last week in connection with the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

“I am a proud Sikh to be going there,” Union Minister of State Puri said, adding that the corridor should have been opened much earlier.

Though Puri said that the Corridor was an important step in the relations between both countries, he added that he would not “jump the gun” in the “euphoria” over the development.

The corridor will give access to pilgrims from India, especially from the Sikh community, to visit the gurdwara which has a significant place in Sikh religious history.

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had on Monday laid the foundation stone of a road, from Dera Baba Nanak town in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, which will connect the Kartarpur Corridor.

Amritsar Member of Parliament (MP) Gurjeet Singh Aujla crossed over to Pakistan from Attari on Tuesday for the ceremony. He carried holy water from the ‘sarovar’ (pond) at the Golden Temple complex.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Gobind Singh Langowal is also in Pakistan for the event.

Punjab Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday said the Kartarpur Corridor had the potential to erase enmity between the two nations and bring peace in the subcontinent.

Sidhu heaped praises on his “friend”, the Pakistan Prime Minister, for ensuring that the corridor became a reality.

“The Kartarpur Corridor will prove to be a path of peace. It will erase enmity between both countries,” Sidhu told media in Wagah in Pakistan.

Sidhu strongly batted for people-to-people and cricketing ties between India and Pakistan despite both the nuclear-armed neighbours who have gone to war earlier having increased tensions in recent years over Pakistan’s support to terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of India.

The cricketer-turned-politician tried to steer clear of controversy over his visiting Pakistan despite strained relations between both countries and Indian soldiers being killed in firing from Pakistan side.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh turned down an invite from the Pakistan government to be part of the ceremony.

He said that the Pakistan Army was killing Indian soldiers and supporting terrorist elements fomenting trouble in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.

Amarinder said he had asked Sidhu to “reconsider” his decision.

“I had asked Sidhu to reconsider his decision to go to Pakistan for the ground-breaking ceremony of the Kartarpur Corridor, but had acceded to his (Sidhu’s) request for permission to go since I did not believe in stopping anyone from undertaking a personal visit,” Amarinder told media on Tuesday.

“Sidhu told me he had already committed himself. When I informed him of the stand I had taken, he said it was his personal visit but he would get back to me. But I did not hear from him,” said the Chief Minister.

Amarinder Singh said the minister sent him a request for going and he cleared it.

“I do not stop anyone from going anywhere on a private visit. It (Sidhu’s trip) is not an official visit,” the Chief Minister said.

Sidhu, who arrived in Pakistan on Wednesday, had on Monday defended his decision to go to Pakistan saying he had the “Chief Minister’s permission.

“Standing by his own decision to decline Pakistan’s invitation for the ceremony, Amarinder Singh said he believed in saying what he felt.

“I have strong feelings on the issue. I have a strong bond with the Indian Army and cannot stand seeing my people getting killed,” he said.

It was at the Kartarpur gurdwara, which is located around two-to-three kilometre from the India-Pakistan international border and is situated right opposite the border belt in Dera Baba Nanak in Indian’s Gurdaspur district in Punjab, that Guru Nanak Dev spent 18 years of his life till he died in 1539.

The gurdwara, which fell in Pakistan territory following the Partition of India in August 1947, has big significance in Sikhism and history.

For the past over 71 years, ever since Partition, Sikhs have been offering prayers near the international border while seeing the gurdwara from a distance.

November 28, 2018 by Nasheman

A top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander, Naveed Jatt, who was wanted for the murder of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari, was killed on Wednesday in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir’s Badgam district, police sources said.

Although an official confirmation was still awaited, the sources said that Jatt, alias Abu Hanzullah, was among the two militants killed in the gunfight that broke out earlier in the day during a cordon and search operation in Kuthpora village.

A Pakistani national belonging to Multan, Jatt, had escaped from police custody on February 6, when he was being taken for a medical check-up to a hospital from the Srinagar Central Jail.

Two policeman were also killed during Jatt’s escape from the S.M.H.S. hospital here.

He is believed to be involved in the murder of Bukhari, the then Editor-in-chief of Rising Kashmir, an English daily.

ISL: NorthEast United FC defeat FC Pune City 2-0

November 28, 2018 by Nasheman

Pune NorthEast United FC got the better of FC Pune City 2-0 in an Indian Super League (ISL) clash at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex here on Tuesday.

Bartholomew Ogbeche and Juan Mascia scored a goal each to seal three points for the visitors, who have continued their unbeaten run away from home and climbed to the second spot on the league table with 17 points from eight matches.

Meanwhile, Ogbeche has equalled Ferran Corominas’ tally of eight goals in the race for the Golden Boot.

FC Pune City, who started the match with four foreign players, created plenty of chances to score but failed to beat NorthEast United custodian Pawan Kumar.

NorthEast United broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Federico Gallego’s flat corner-kick reached Ogbeche at the far post. The striker chested it down and placed the ball into the net to score his eighth goal of the season.

Pune soon stepped up their efforts and were almost rewarded in the 41st minute when Marcelinho’s free-kick from the left found Matt Mills inside the box. The defender rose highest and was denied by Pawan, who pulled off an outstanding save.

Pune started the second half just like they ended the first. They pressed for an equaliser but a resilient NorthEast United backline stood firm to keep the scores level.

Juan Mascia dribbled into the box from the right and was brought down by Sahil Panwar in the 90th minute. The forward stepped up and converted from 12 yards to seal the win for NorthEast United.

RIP Mohd Aziz: The voice with a staggering pitch By Subhash K Jha

November 28, 2018 by Nasheman

The going was great for Mohd Aziz in the 1980s. The great Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar were no more. And the only competition that Aziz, affectionately know as Munna, had was Shabbir Kumar.

Shabbir sang off-key. I openly supported Aziz’s voice in my music columns that I did during those days. Got slammed for it. But I didn’t care if I was being trolled at a time when trolling had not been invented.

Mohd Aziz had a vast range. He could sing at a staggering pitch. It was a pleasure to hear him hold his own in his duets with the indomitable Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

Lataji and Aziz sang a number of duets in the 1980s and early 1990s including the timeless ‘Patjhad sawan basant bahaar'(film Sindoor) and ‘Bali umar ne mara haal yun kiya'(Awaargi).

Says Lataji, “I recall him as a very kindhearted softspoken man with a good mastery over the seven notes. Woh sur achcha lagate the (he pitched his voice well)”.

Composing maestros Laxmikant-Pyarelal were very fond of Mohd Aziz’s voice. “We sang the duets ‘Patjhad sawan basant bahaar’ and ‘Naam sare bhool jaaane lage’ for Laxmi-Pyare. These were melodious numbers at a time when melody was on the wane. I enjoyed singing with him.”

Alka Yagnik who sang one of her best songs ‘Tu na ja mere badshah'(Khuda Gawah) with Aziz remembers him fondly. “Like me,he was also from Kolkata, so I kind of knew him from my childhood days. Munna (Mohd Aziz) was always very cheerful, sweet-spoken and an endearing person. And he had a powerful voice. He was one of Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s favourite singers. I sang many songs with him.”

I remind Alka of Aziz’s meteoric rise and swift fall, and Alka shrugs, “Well… What do I say to that now…so many prolific singers vanished… but he still used to do concerts … had quite a repertoire of popular songs to his credit.”

The very talented music composer Rajesh Roshan who gave Aziz some of his career’s best songs including ‘Ek andhera laakh sitare’ in ‘Aakhir Kyon’, ‘Main se na meena se na saqi se’ in ‘Khudgarz’ says, “What a beautiful singer! But above that, he was a great human being who always met you with open arms.

Composer Anu Malik who used Aziz as Amitabh Bachchan’s voice in Manmohan Desai’s ‘Mard’ is shocked at the singer’s demise.

“I gave him his earliest break in ‘Mard’. A very soft-spoken, tremendously hardworking singer and always ready to learn improvise and give his best. May his soul rest in everlasting peace and may God give his family immense strength to bear with this irreparable loss.”

“A shining musical light of the 80s & early 90s has dimmed But shall never ever switch off. He will live in the hearts and minds of music lovers forever,” he said.

Mohd Aziz’s most popular songs:

1.One 2 Ka 4 My name in Lakhan: ‘Ram Lakhan’

2.Main se ne meena se na saqi se: ‘Khudgarz’

3.Tu na je mere badshah: ‘Khuda Gawah’

4.Duniya mein kitna gham hai: ‘Avtaar’

5.Ungli mein angoothi angoothi mein nagina: ‘Ram Avtar’

India face tough task at hockey World Cup

November 27, 2018 by Nasheman

India are expected to face an uphill battle playing in front of the hockey crazy Odisha crowd that will turn up in large numbers to watch the 2018 FIH World Cup starting here on Wednesday.

Despite being the most successful team in Olympic hockey with eight golds, India have won the World Cup only once, way back in 1975.

Despite playing at home, it will be sort of miracle if World No.5 India managed to break this long barren run this time round.

Under current coach Harendra Singh, the Indian team has shown a lot of promise.

Since taking over from previous incumbent, Dutchman Sjoerd Marijne in May this year, Harendra has guided the team to silver at the Champions Trophy, a bronze at the Asian Games and the Asian Champions Trophy title.

Before that, India had finished fourth at the 2018 Commonwealth Games under Marijne’s watch.

This World Cup will feature a total of 4 pools with four teams each.

The pool toppers will get a direct entry into the quarterfinals while the 2nd and 3rd placed will have to go through play-offs to enter the last eight stage.

India have been placed in Pool C along with strong title contenders Belgium and minnows South Africa and Canada.

Pool A contains Argentina, Spain, France and New Zealand.

The hosts will start their campaign against South Africa on the opening day while Belgium will play Canada the same day.

Overwhelming favourites and defending champions Australia are in Pool B along with Ireland, England and China.

Pool D is expected to throw up several mouth watering matches since it includes formidable Germany, another strong contender Holland, four-time winners Pakistan and Malaysia.

Australia, who have won the last two editions, will be chasing an unprecedented third consecutive title.

If the boys from Down Under are successful in their quest, they will win their fourth title and become the joint most successful nation in the tournament along with Pakistan.

The fact that Pakistan have managed to reach India is something of a triumph for the cash strapped team.

Their participation was in doubt till the last moment due to lack of funds. It was only the signing of a major sponsorship deal with Haier Pakistan that enabled their participation.
