LinkedIn faced probe for Facebook ads targeting 18 mn non-members

November 26, 2018 by Nasheman

San Francisco An investigation by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) found that LinkedIn had processed hashed email addresses of approximately 18 million non-LinkedIn members and targeted these individuals on Facebook without necessary permission, a new report has revealed.

The investigation covered the activities of the Microsoft-owned professional networking platform during the first six months of 2018, The Verge reported on Saturday.

In its report published on Friday, DPC said that it concluded its audit of LinkedIn Ireland Unlimited Company (LinkedIn) in respect of its processing of personal data following an investigation of a complaint notified to the DPC by a non-LinkedIn user.

The complaint concerned LinkedIn’s obtaining and use of the complainant’s email address for the purpose of targeted advertising on the Facebook.

The investigation revealed that that LinkedIn Corporation in the US did not have the required permission from the data controller – LinkedIn Ireland — to process hashed email addresses of 18 million non-LinkedIn members.

The complaint was ultimately “amicably resolved”, with LinkedIn implementing a number of immediate actions to cease the processing of user data for the purposes that gave rise to the complaint, DPC said in its report.

However, the body was “concerned with the wider systemic issues identified” in its report, and undertook a second audit to see if LinkedIn had adequate “technical security and organisational measures.”

DPC found that the site was “undertaking the pre-computation of a suggested professional network for non-LinkedIn members,” and ordered them to stop and delete associated data that existed prior to May 25 of this year, the day when General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect.

“We appreciate the DPC’s 2017 investigation of a complaint about an advertising campaign and fully cooperated,” Denis Kelleher, Head of Privacy, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, for LinkedIn, told TechCrunch in a statement.

“Unfortunately the strong processes and procedures we have in place were not followed and for that we are sorry. We’ve taken appropriate action, and have improved the way we work to ensure that this will not happen again,” Kelleher said.

As TechCrunch pointed out LinkedIn did not get fined in this process because until the implementation of GDPR at the end of May, the regulator had no power to enforce fines.

It is still not clear how LinkedIn got hold of those 18 million email addresses.

3rd T20I: Kohli lauds bowlers for victory over Australia

November 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Sydney After India defeated Australia by six wickets in the third and the final Twenty20 match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) to level the rubber 1-1, skipper Virat Kohli felt his bowlers did a commendable job on a tough wicket.

Kohli, who struck a brilliant half-century to ensure India overhaul the 165-run target in time, also lauded openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan’s effort.

Significantly, Rohit (23 off 16 balls) and Dhawan (41 off 22 balls) were involved in a 67-run partnership to provide the India a solid start.

“Things become pretty easy when those two (Shikhar and Rohit) guys do the job for us. We thought the wicket slowed down with the old ball. That’s how T20 cricket goes,” the Indian skipper said after the match.

“When our openers get into the zone they’re difficult to stop,” Kohli, who played a crucial 41-ball 61-run knock on Sunday, expressed adding: “Overall, skill wise, we were better on the day than Australia.”

The 30-year-old also praised his bowlers for restricting the hosts to an achievable total.

“With the ball, we were more professional today. I thought it was a 180 wicket,” Kohli pointed out.

Meanwhile, an elated Krunal Pandya, who returned with his career best figures of 4/36 after being hammered for 55 runs in first game at Brisbane, said: “Obviously it feels really great to contribute in a winning side. I had to back myself after that first game. It feels good to overcome those type of hurdles.”

“The best part of team India is they back all of the players whether you are doing well or poorly,” Krunal, who was also adjudged Man of the Match, added.

PKL: Haryana Steelers defeat Dabang Delhi 34-27

November 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Pune, Nov 25 (IANS) Haryana Steelers put up an accomplished team performance to register a much-needed 34-27 win over Dabang Delhi in a Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) clash at the Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Sports Complex here on Sunday.

Vikas Kandola was the star performer as he scored 10 points and was ably supported by Naveen who chipped in with five points for Haryana.

Meanwhile Dabang Delhi’s Naveen Kumar also scored 10 raid points but his effort went in vain as he didn’t get enough support from his defence.

Haryana Steelers got off to a quick start to lead 2-0 after two minutes but Naveen Kumar levelled the match for Dabang Delhi with a two-point raid. It was a quiet first 10 minutes as both sides seemed to be measuring each other.

Haryana Steelers were trailing 5-7 and their star raider Monu Goyat was struggling to put points on the board.

Vikas Kandola got the bulk of raid points for Haryana Steelers in the first half. After 15 minutes both teams were locked in a tight battle with scores level at 9-9. Monu opened his account in the 17th minute to give Haryana Steelers 12-9 lead.

At the end of the first half Haryana Steelers led 13-10 with Dabang Delhi still very much in the game.

Vikas made a two-point raid at the start of the second half as Haryana extended their lead to 17-10. Haryana Steelers inflicted the first all out of the match in the 25th minute to lead 23-15.

Naveen Kumar had an excellent raiding game for Delhi as he consistently put the points on board.

After 30 minutes, Haryana Steelers were in the driving seat as they led 27-18. Haryana Steelers kept their nerve and composure in the last five minutes and went away with a convincing 34-27 win.

26/11 Mumbai attack anniversary: US announces $5 mn bounty By Arul Louis

November 26, 2018 by Nasheman

New York Timed for the tenth anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai attack on Monday, the US government has announced a $5 million-bounty covering all the terrorists connected with it.

The reward offered under the State Department’s Rewards for Justice (RFJ) Programme is for “any individual who committed, conspired to commit, or aided or abetted in the execution” of the attack that killed 166 people, a Department media note said on Sunday.

This is the third RFJ bounty from the State Department on terrorists involved in the Mumbai attack carried out by the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as it casts a wider net beyond its leaders.

In 2012, the Department put a bounty of $10 million on LeT founder Hafiz Mohammad Saeed and $2 million on his deputy, Hafiz Abdul Rahman Makki.

The rewards have not worked so far and Saeed operates openly in Pakistan, leaving the effectiveness of the latest steps open to question.

Under international pressure, the Pakistani Punjab government put him under house arrest in January in 2017 but a review board headed by a Lahore High Court judge ordered his release in November that year.

Saeed has also been declared an international terrorist by the UN Security Council.

Before the Mumbai attack, the US had designated the LeT as a terrorist organisation in 2001 and imposed sanctions on it and the UN Security Council followed suit in 2005.

The RFJ website, which said the “reward offer extends to any individual who bears responsibility for this act of terror”, mentioned four persons, who, it said, have been indicted by a US federal court.

They are Sajid Mir, Major Iqbal, Abu Qahafa and Mazhar Iqbal (alias Abu al-Qama).

The RJF website said that Mir was the handler for Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, who was sent by the LeT on a spying mission to India to prepare for the attacks.

Ten heavily-armed terrorists, sneaked in through the Arabian Sea and attacked multiple locations within a small geographical area, killing 166 persons — including Indian security personnel and 26 foreign nationals — and left another 300 injured, besides inflicting huge damage to public and private properties.

Headley, whose original name was Daood Sayed Gilani, is serving a 35-year prison sentence in the US for his role in the Mumbai attack and in a terrorism conspiracy against a Danish newspaper.

Gauri Lankesh murder case:SIT files additional 9,235 Pages,Chargesheet in special court against 18 accused.

November 24, 2018 by Nasheman

By : Pramesh S Jain

The Special Investigation Team (SIT), investigating the murder of firebrand journalist Gauri Lankesh has submitted additional charge sheet of 9235 pages against 18 accused person to Special court for KCOCA,(Karnataka Control of Crimes Act) here on Friday.

The additional charge sheet was carried out by Four policemen in a metal trunk box containing 9,235 pages of chargesheet to court on Friday evening and submitted before principal city civil and sessions court Judge Shivashankar B Amarannavar. The Principal city civil and sessions court is designated court to hear cases under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act (KCOCA).

This is the additional chargesheet filed nearly 180 days after SIT had filed the first chargesheet in the case this May.

The 9,235-page document reportedly mentions the involvement of Hindu extremist group Sanathana Sanstha and names 18 people.

Earlier the police had filed a 650-page chargesheet in the case, eight months after the cold-blooded murder of the journalist-activist.

We submitted an additional charge sheet against 18 accused persons to the Special Court. It is 9,235 pages. We have also sought permission to investigate further, investigation officer at SIT told media persons.

Firebrand editor of the Gauri Lankesh Patrike,Gauri was shot dead outside her home in Bengaluru’s Rajarajeshwarinagar on the night of September 5, 2017.

It was only in February that the police made the first arrest in the case after it nabbed KT Naveen Kumar, who was allegedly given the task of procuring a gun and bullets for the crime. He was held, the police said, just as the group was allegedly plotting the murder of rationalist KS Bhagwan.

Subsequently, the SIT hit upon the plot and with this breakthrough, was able to arrest Sujith Kumar alias Praveen, who then led it to the alleged masterminds Amol Kale and Amit Degwekar, both from Maharashtra, a police officer said. Also apprehended was Manohar Edave,a resident of Vijayapura, who allegedly played a key role in recruiting the killers.

In June, the SIT arrested Parashuram Waghmare, who it believes, shot Lankesh. The others key accused arrested are Amit Baddi and Ganesh Miskin, who are suspected to have ferried Waghmare to her home on a two-wheeler, and Rakesh Bangera, who allegedly trained the shooter.

While the police matched the bullets recovered from the crime scene with those recovered from the house of rationalist MM Kalburgi, who was also shot dead at his home in Karnataka’s Dharwad in August 2015,it is still not in possession of the gun used to commit the crimes, according to a senior official of the SIT,Speaking on the condition of anonymity.

However, we are now in possession of the two-wheeler used in the commission of the crime,” the officer said.Around 80% of the investigation is complete at this stage.

Amol Kale, one of the first persons arrested by the SIT, has been named as the main accused in the case. The SIT said its investigation had found that Kale was the kingpin who meticulously planned the conspiracy, took care of logistics, provided gun training, organised finance and shelter, and finally ensured that the final assault took place.

The SIT,however, is still hunting for a man named Nihal alias Dada who it believes will tie up the link between the killings of rationalists Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare, M.M. Kalburgi and Lankesh.

After the Karnataka SIT cracked the Lankesh case, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the CBI were able to find crucial links to the unsolved murder of Pansare.

The special teams of both states collaborated and shared evidence and found that one Sudhanva Gondhalekar was allegedly involved in plotting terror attacks in Maharashtra and was also spotted in CCTV footage near Lankesh’s house.

The Maharashtra ATS conducted multiple raids and arrested Vaibhav Raut, a Sanatan Sanstha sympathiser, and two others. These arrests also provided much-needed intel and leads to the Karnataka SIT.

The SIT in October had secured the custody of Vasudev Suryavamshi, first arrested by Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad in connection with the Nalasopara explosive case.He is suspected to be the one who supplied the motorbike on which the alleged killers of Gauri used for the murder to reach the crime scene. He was also incidentally suspected to be involved in the murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar.

The SIT has mentioned that during the course of its investigation,it did not find any personal or direct link between Lankesh and the killers, confirming the suspicion that she was killed as part of the bigger conspiracy to silence rationalists in the country, special public prosecutor Balan told media persons.

The chargesheet also explained that the larger conspiracy was to strategically eliminate 43 other liberals and rationalists, some of whom survived attempts to kill.

Of the 18 people in the SIT’s custody, the major success has been the arrest of Parshuram Waghmore, who the police believe is the one who shot Lankesh at point-blank range. The other accused who played an important role were Rajesh Bangera,Amit Baddi,Ganesh Miskin,Manohar Edave,Sujeet Kumar, Amit Degwekar,K.T. Naveen Kumar and Mohan Naik. All the 17 accused were arrested in the case and remanded in judicial custody.

The trail of the case may likely start in January 2019 based on two charge sheets.

Sloppy India crash out of ICC women’s World T20

November 24, 2018 by Nasheman

India crashed out of the ICC women’s World T20 after going down to England by 8 wickets in the second semi-final at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium here on Friday.

In what turned out as a golden opportunity to avenge their ICC 50-over World Cup final loss to England, India were handicapped by a lower order batting collapse that saw them being bundled out for a meagre 112 after opting to bat.

In Saturday’s summit clash, No.2 ranked England will face traditional rivals World No.1 Australia, who outclassed defending champions and hosts West Indies by 71 runs in the other semi-final of the day.

On a pitch that demanded technique and patience, England’s chase of 113 got off to a tricky start with the opening duo of Danielle Wyatt (8) and Tammy Beaumont (1) departing early, thanks to Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav.

England could soon have lost their third wicket in the form of top scorer Natalie Sciver (54 not out off 43 balls; 4X5) had Poonam Yadav not dropped her at midwicket off Anuja Patil when the right-hander was on two.

Even after that Harmanpreet Kaur’s ploy of continuing with the slower bowlers for the first 10 overs gave the English duo of Sciver and stumper Amy Ellen Jones (51 not out off 42; 4X3, 6X1), the license to adjust accordingly.

The right-handed pair came all guns blazing, with Amy taking the attack to the opposition with her aggressive stroke play before Natalie matched her shot for shot to first bring up their respective fifties, and take England to their fourth World Cup final with 17 balls to spare.

Earlier, India’s ploy to leave out the veteran Mithali Raj on a pitch that demanded techinique and patience, backfired as the the women in blue squandered a brisk start before losing their last eight wickets for mere 23 runs to fold for a meagre total.

Smriti Mandhana (34 off 23; 4X5, 6X1) top scored for India, getting the team to a quick 43-run start with stumper Taniya Bhatia (11) before young Jemimah Rodrigues came up with a run-a-ball 26 to solidify things. At 89/3 in the 14th over, the platform was set for skipper Harmanpreet (16 off 20; 6X1) to launch the attack for another massive total but unfortunately the Indian innings got derailed from there on.

India kept losing wickets in heaps with the next seven batters falling like nine pins and even failing to reach the double digits. For the English women, skipper Heather Knight was the pick of the bowlers, returning 3/9 while Kirstie Gordon and Sophie Ecclestone contributed well by taking two wickets each.

Brief Scores: India 112 (Smriti Mandhana 34, Jemimah Rodrigues 26; Heather Knight 3/9, Kirstie Gordon 2/20, Sophie Ecclestone 2/22) lose to England 116/2 (Natalie Sciver 54 not out, Amy Ellen Jones 51 not out; Radha Yadav 1/20) by 8 wickets.

Stop ‘police raj’ in Sabarimala: Congress

November 24, 2018 by Nasheman

The Kerala unit of the Congress on Saturday asked the Pinarayi Vijayan government to end the prevailing “police raj” in Sabarimala for more pilgrims to visit the Lord Ayyappa shrine.

The district authorities have now extended the prohibitory orders in and around the temple town till November 26 and according to official figures, there has been a drop of Rs 14 crore in revenue for the first week of the season as compared to the previous year.

Last year the total collection was Rs 22 crore.

“We were there at the temple town and the place looks deserted. If one looks into the previous seasons, by now a million pilgrims would have come and gone, whereas this time due to the ‘police raj’ prevailing at the temple town, just around 2 lakhs have come till today,” Leader of opposition Ramesh Chennithala told the media here.

“Pilgrims will only come when the ‘police raj’ is lifted,” Chennithala said, adding that Sabarimala was the only religious place where prohibitory orders were in force.

An uneasy calm has been prevailing in the temple town ever since protests by Hindu groups started after the September Supreme Court verdict that allowed women of all ages to enter the temple that hitherto banned girls and women aged 10-50.

The apex court on November 13 refused to stay the September verdict, three days before the temple opened for this season.

The Left Democratic Front government led by the CPI-M has been trying to implement the apex court’s verdict even as the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party and several Hindu groups were up in arms against it.

Reacting to the drop in revenue, State Minister for Devasoms (temples) Kadakampally Surendran told the media that while the state government will not have any issues due to it, the salaries, pension and other expenditure of the Travancore Devasom Board will be affected.
