HD Kumaraswamy attacks PM Modi.

February 8, 2019 by Nasheman

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday, hours before presenting the state budget, attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the disruption of the Assembly by BJP leaders, claiming the ruling coalition has lost the majority.

He said the PM was systemically demolishing the country’s democracy by misleading the people.

“I request all the opposition parties to rise. They must expose the truth of the Prime Minister in the parliament,” he said.

“On one side Narendra Modi is preaching to the country and politicians, on the other side, he is encouraging his friends to demolish democracy through black money. I will expose this now, I have the proof to back my charge,” he added.

Kumaraswamy on Thursday gave away prime positions in the government to potential rebels in an effort to pacify them, amid din in the Assembly.

Not wishing to comment on ongoing political developments, Kumaraswamy said he would present the budget on Friday as per schedule.

“Let BJP protest, I can’t do anything…I will answer to it on Monday,” he said.

Playing hardball, disgruntled Congress MLAs skipped the assembly session for the second day Thursday, even as the BJP blocked proceedings of the House, claiming the ruling coalition has lost the majority.

Anxiety-gripped Congress has convened a legislature party (CLP) meeting Friday ahead of budget presentation and warned its MLAs that absence would invite action under the Anti-Defection Law.

Opposition BJP continued its protest against the Congress-JD(S) coalition government from the Well of the assembly for the second consecutive day, forcing the speaker to adjourn the House without transacting any business.

Though a couple of legislators had given prior intimation about the inability to attend, the absence of legislators allegedly in touch with the BJP to switch sides continued to be a cause of worry for the ruling coalition leaders.

Four MLAs — Ramesh Jarkiholi, Umesh G Jadhav, B Nagendra, Mahesh Kumathalli — who had skipped the January 18 CLP meeting and were issued a notice, continued to remain absent from the House on Thursday too.

The four MLAs were allegedly upset with the party for not being inducted into the Kumaraswamy cabinet.

Dealing a further blow to Congress reports emerged that at least 20 Congress MLAs too had gone missing just around the time when 104 BJP MLAs were huddled in a resort in Gurugram.

JD(S) and Congress MPs have accused the BJP of trying to “blackmail” their MLAs by offering them Rs 30-40 crore to resign in a bid to topple the coalition government and said they have “all proof” to support their allegation.

Addressing a press conference, the MPs alleged that in the last six months, the saffron party made several attempts to “force” the legislators of the JD(S) and the Congress to defect from their parties.

They demanded a probe into the alleged horse trading.

“Some legislators were kept in Mumbai under the pressure of goons and police. They were not allowed to go to their constituencies. They were blackmailed. They were forced to resign,” Congress MP D K Suresh told reporters.

He alleged that the BJP-ruled Maharashtra and central governments are pressuring some Karnataka MLAs and threatening to “finish” their political career if they did not support them.

D Kupendra Reddy of the JD(S) attacked the BJP for not allowing the coalition government to function.

“The BJP’s state unit thinks it’s the largest party. But there have been instances where NDA had run the government with the help of several parties. Don’t weaken the government, else the people will teach you,” he added.

BJP, with numbers in the assembly still not in their favour, has decided not to move a no-confidence motion against the government and is expected to continue with disruption questioning the legitimacy of the coalition government.

As the Assembly met for the day Thursday, slogan shouting BJP members trooped into the well of the House.

“Down down to the government that lost the majority. Go back go back-CM go back, step down step down-CM step down,” slogans reverberated in the House.

Hitting back, coalition ministers challenged the BJP to move a no-confidence motion against the government.

BJP is expected to continue its protest in the House on Friday too, when Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, who holds the finance portfolio, will present his coalition government’s second budget, with an intention to disrupt it.

K’taka CM releases audio clip.

February 8, 2019 by Nasheman

BAhead of presenting the Karnataka budget for 2019-20, chief minister HD Kumaraswamy has released an audio clip allegedly of BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa trying to poach his MLAs.

It will be the second budget of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government and is set to be along the lines of the one presented in July, in which the CM announced the farmer loan waiver scheme.

However, the budget is set to be read out amid protest by the BJP, having ensured on Wednesday that Governor Vajubhai Vala cut short his address to the joint sitting of both Houses.

BJP leader R Ashok said, “They have chosen to present the budget at 12.32 pm because they are afraid this government is set to collapse. That is why they have reposed faith in astrology.”

In regard to the absence of four rebel Congress MLAs, BJP claimed that the government did not enjoy a majority.

The Congress MLAs -Ramesh Jarkiholi, Mahesh Kumathahalli, Umesh Jadhav and B Nagendra—and MLA J N Ganesh, who is absconding after a brawl with a colleague at a Bengaluru resort.

At present, the alliance enjoys the support of 117 MLAs- 79 of the Congress, 37 of JD(S) and onelegislator of the BSP.

Meanwhile, BJP has the support of 104 MLAs.

Former chief minister and Congress Legislature Party chief Siddaramaiah condemned the behaviour of BJP.

“The BJP doesn’t believe in democracy, if it did its MLAs wouldn’t have disrupted the governor’s speech,” he said.

Siddaramaiah also challenged BJP leaders to move a no-confidence motion.

The former chief minister said the Congress would take a decision on the rebels after the CLP meeting at 9 am on Friday.

However, former chief minister and state BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa, stuck to the party’s claim that the government did not enjoy a majority.

“This government doesn’t have a moral right to present the budget. The people of the state don’t have confidence in this government because Congress leaders keep saying Siddaramaiah is their chief minister,” he said.

Rahul provoking armed forces against government: Sitharaman

February 8, 2019 by Nasheman

New Delhi, Feb 8 (IANS) Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday rejected Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s charge that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ran parallel negotiation for the Rafale deal and accused him of provoking the armed forces against the government.

“Today I object to what Rahul has said — he was telling Air Force pilots and officers ‘look what Prime Minister is doing to you’. What does this mean, what is going on in his mind? Does he want to provoke them? Does he want to make them stand up against the government? Is it a responsible job of the Opposition? It is very dangerous,” she told media outside Parliament.

“Congress has become a toy in the dirty game of multinational corporates. Their language is not in the interest of the country,” she alleged.

Sitharaman said that she was “very shocked” to see this attitude.

“Rahul Gandhi, in his press conference today, called the PM a thief and me a liar. I had also said earlier that as we have not come from a known family, so they try to tarnish our image.”

Her remarks came soon after Gandhi, earlier in the day, addressed a press conference and accused Prime Minister of being directly involved in the Rafale fighter jet deal with France by running parallel negotiation in 2015.

Lashing out at an English newspaper for carrying out a “one-sided” story, the Defence Minister said, “One newspaper has printed a file noting, which is written by (former) Defence Secretary. In the same note he is saying Defence Minister should make a statement.

“The then Defence Minister (Manohar Parrikar) has seen that noting and also signed it. What was the response of then Defence Minister Parrikar? I said the same thing in Parliament.”

Slamming the media house, she said, “If the news report carried one noting, then it should have also carried the response of the then Defence Minister in its news report. That is ethical journalism.”

Quoting the then Defence Minister’s reply to that file noting, Sitharaman said, “Your note is right, but there is no need to get excited so much. Everything is alright. This was Parrikar’s reply, which is there in the files of the Defence Secretary.”

“I am sorry there was selective noting and building an issue falsely on it,” she said, adding that the response of the then Defence Minister was very clear.

She also asserted that on the direction of the same Defence Secretary and the Member of the Negotiating Committee with their signatures, the file went to the Cabinet Committee on Security and Cabinet. “Only after that clearance was given and then an agreement signed,” she said.

Defending the Prime Minister and the PMO, Sitharaman said, “If the PMO asks for the progress in a matter, can it be considered interference or parallel negotiation?”

Referring to Sonia Gandhi, who held the post of the Chairperson of National Advisory Council (NAC) during the UPA governments, she said, “Was Soniaji interfering in the working of every ministry or running a parallel cabinet or snatching the rights of any minister?

“Highlighting a selective part is not good. I have a lot of expectations from Congress,” she added.

Beer to cost more in Karnataka

February 8, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Beer will cost more as will other low alcoholic beverages in Karnataka from April 1 as the state budget for fiscal 2019-20 proposed a steep increase in additional excise duty on the beverages.

“I propose 25 per cent increase in additional excise duty on beer to 175 per cent from 150 per cent and 35 per cent on draught beer to 150 per cent from 115 per cent,” Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said on Friday while presenting the budget for the ensuing fiscal in the Assembly amidst a ruckus and walkout by the opposition BJP.

As part of resource mobilisation, the Chief Minister said excise duty on beer manufactured in a micro-brewery would be doubled to Rs 10 per bulk litre (BL) from Rs 5 per BL and additional excise duty to Rs 25 per BL from Rs 12.50 per BL.

“I also propose to increase excise duty on low alcoholic beverages to Rs 10 per BL from Rs 5 per BL and additional excise duty on them to 150 per cent from 122 per cent,” said Kumaraswamy.

The Chief Minister, who also holds the finance portfolio, told the legislators that the state excise department would mobilise Rs 20,950 crore through the proposed hike in duties as against the target of Rs 19,750 crore set for fiscal 2018-19.

Australia ropes in Ponting as assistant coach for World Cup

February 8, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  Cricket Australia (CA) on Friday announced the appointment of three-time World Cup winner Ricky Ponting as assistant coach as the Kangaroos prepare to defend their title in the upcoming ICC World Cup in England and Wales this year.

Ponting’s appointment comes a day after David Saker resigned as Australia’s fast-bowling coach with immediate effect.

The former skipper will work alongside coach Justin Langer as part of CA’s “changes to the coaching structure (that) will see him focus on working closely with the ODI batting group”.

Batting coach Graeme Hick has been tasked with supervising the side for the Ashes campaign, that starts soon after the World Cup in June and July.

“This appointment also provides an opportunity for Graeme Hick to focus on preparation for the Ashes,” Interim High Performance Executive General Manager Belinda Clark said in a CA statement.

“With two major events back to back we believe it is important to focus a number of staff specifically on one event. The appointment of Ricky is a part of this overall strategy.”Ricky will assist Justin across a number of key areas including strategy and game-plan, but he will also work closely with and mentor the batting group as they prepare for the English conditions,” she added.

Ponting, who will coach the newly renamed Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in April and May, will join Australia’s pre-tournament camp in Brisbane in May before their first World Cup game against Afghanistan in Bristol on June 1.

India defeat New Zealand to level T20I series

February 8, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Skipper Rohit Sharma’s quickfire half-century and useful contributions from Shikhar Dhawan (30) and Rishabh Pant (36 not out) saw India outplay New Zealand by seven wickets in the second Twenty20 International match here on Friday.

With this win, India have levelled the three match series 1-1.

Chasing 159, the Indian openers –Rohit and Dhawan– played fearlessly and in no time the duo slammed 79 runs in 9.2 overs before Rohit was dismissed by spinner Ish Sodhi.

Rohit played brilliant shots all around the park to complete his half century. The Mumbai batsman played 29 balls and slammed three boundaries and four sixes.

In the very next over, Dhawan was also dismissed. He was caught by Colin de Grandhomme off Lockie Ferguson at backward point.

Rishabh Pant and Vijay Shankar (14) then tried to keep up the momentum set by the Indian openers but in te process Shankar fell prey to Daryl Mitchell. He was caught by Tim Southee at the boundary while trying for a six with the score at 118 in 14 overs.

Pant and wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni then joined hands in the middle and completed the proceedings with ease.

For New Zealand, Lockie Ferguson, Ish Sodhi and Daryl Mitchell scalped one wicket each.

Earlier, all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme’s brilliant half-century and Ross Taylor’s disciplined innings helped New Zealand post 158/8.

Losing four wickets for just 50 runs in 7.5 overs, Taylor and Grandhomme forged a crucial 77-run partnership for the sixth wicket and helped their team post a good total.

Opting to bat, New Zealand started the proceedings cautiously but in the third over, Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up Tim Seifert (12), who was the top scorer in the last match.

Colin Munro (12) and Kane Williamson (20) then came together. Munro was dismissed by spinner Krunal Pandya in the sixth over while trying to up the scoring rate. Krunal dismissed Daryl Mitchell (1) also in the same over.

With the scoreboard reading 43/3, Krunal came in again in the eighth over and dismissed Williamson. He was adjudged leg before wicket.

Taylor and Grandhomme then joined hands and played sensibly. The duo played some beautifully crafted shots in the process.

But just when things seemed good in the middle, Grandhomme was sent packing by all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the 16th over. Grandhomme played 28 balls and slammed one boundary and four sixes.

Unperturbed by the fall of wickets, Taylor kept on playing his shots but lack of support from the lower order batsmen cost him. He was run out by Vijay Shankar in the penultimate over. In his 32-ball stay, Taylor hit three boundaries.

For India, Krunal scalped three wickets while Khaleel Ahmed picked up two.

Brief scores: New Zealand: 158/8 (Colin de Grandhomme 50, Ross Taylor 42; Krunal Pandya 3/28) against India: 162/3 (Rohit Sharma 50; Lockie Ferguson 1/31, Ish Sodhi 1/31)

Indian man falls to death in Sharjah

February 8, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  A 32-year-old Indian man fell to his death from the seventh floor of a building in Al Majara area here, the police said.

Gopa Kumar, who died in the Thursday incident, hailed from Kerala and was working as a maintenance worker here. The police said he died due to the strong impact of the fall. He was found in a pool of blood with his skull damaged severely, the Khaleej Times reported.

The body was found in the shaft of the building and the police removed it with the help of the watchman. It was later sent to a forensic laboratory to ascertain if there was any criminal intent behind the incident.

According to the report, the deceased used to share his room with the building’s watchman who was taken into police custody for interrogation.

“We cannot assume he had committed suicide before the completion of the investigation,” a police official said.

Speaking to the daily, a friend of the deceased said that Kumar was a cheerful man and faced no financial issues.

“He used to call his wife and his three-year-old daughter almost every day. We used to go to the gym together in the evening and I never heard him talk about any problem. The last time I saw him he was cheerful with no sign of depression. His death has come as a shock to me.”

Kumar’s relative, Saba Biju, said he received a call from the police and rushed over. After follow up with the police, he will receive the body for repatriation. His family has been notified about the death.

4 dead in J&K after seasons heaviest snowfall

February 8, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  Four persons were killed, while 10 went missing and hundreds remained stranded on Friday due to the heaviest spell of snow in Jammu and Kashmir so far this season, authorities said.

Relief teams rescued two persons, including a special police officer (SPO) from debris of an avalanche that hit a police post near the Jawahar Tunnel on Thursday and 10 went missing.

The rescued SPO has been identified as Gulzar Ahmad Mir of Kulgam district. A massive relief and rescue operation was underway for the remaining eight.

Authorities had put the number at six policemen, two Fire and Emergency Services personnel and two prisoners who had gone missing when the police post was hit.

Bodies of two persons killed in Ramsoo-Ramban sector of the Jammu-Srinagar highway were also recovered earlier in the day. They have been identified as Sanjit Lakra of West Bengal and Pramod Mankotia of Himachal Pradesh, police sources said.

A couple was killed while their two children were rescued after an avalanche destroyed their home in Kokernag area of Anantnag district late on Thursday.

The rescue team working near the Jawahar Tunnel has sought helicopter support to augment its efforts.

Multiple avalanches occurred at many other places in the Kashmir Valley, however, due to lack of communication and connectivity the extent of casualties or damage, if any, was not yet clear.

Authorities have shifted 78 families from avalanche-prone areas of Waltangoo Nar and Kund in Kulgam district to safer places.

Seven families were shifted to the Khag police station after an avalanche hit their village in central Badgam district.

Another, 20 families were shifted to safer places from Ganderbal.

Reports of seven to eight feet of fresh snowfall in the higher reaches and one to two feet in the plains in the past 24 hours indicate that this has been the heaviest snowfall of the season so far.

Hundreds of people were stranded in Jammu as the Jammu-Srinagar highway was shut for the third consecutive day after multiple avalanches and landslides hit various stretches of the 300-km long road.

Hundreds of Kashmiris were reported to be stranded in Delhi as flight operations remained disrupted since Wednesday and were completely closed at the Srinagar international airport on Thursday.

Morning flights could not operate to and from the Srinagar airport but operations were likely to resume shortly as the weather has improved significantly.

Electric power supply, water supply and road connectivity was also severely affected in the state.

Senior engineers of the electricity department said they supplied 850 megawatts of power to the valley on Thursday against the usual 1,200 megawatt requirement.

Despite these figures, most areas in the Valley and also some in Srinagar city remained without electric supply during the last 36 hours.

Water supply in areas where electricity is needed to operate drinking water plants has also remained adversely affected.

Roads in Srinagar and those connecting different district headquarters have remained partially closed since Thursday.

Restoration of all road links in Srinagar city and inter district road connectivity was expected to be completed by afternoon.

Availability of essential commodities including food items and petroleum products has been hit by continued closure of the strategic Janmu-Srinagar highway through which all essentials supplies are routed into the landlocked valley.

Mutton, poultry products and vegetables have vanished from markets in Srinagar city and other places.

Alarmed by depleting stocks of petroleum products, local administration has ordered rationing of petrol and diesel till the supply position improves.

This season’s snowfall has dispelled fears of water shortage in rivers, lakes, streams and springs during the coming summer months.

At the same time, the vagaries of nature have also taken their toll causing serious hardships to the people

Maharashtra Assembly may be dissolved on Feb 28: Congress

February 8, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  The Congress has claimed that the Maharashtra Assembly may be dissolved on February 28 after the budget presentation, paving the way for simultaneous elections with the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

However, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis rejected the contention, reiterating his often repeated stance that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena coalition would complete its full tenure till October this year.

Addressing a party workers’ rally as part of the ongoing pre-election campaign in Aurangabad on Thursday night, state Congress President Ashok Chavan said the state government was planning for simultaneous elections this time.

“The state Assembly would be dissolved immediately after the budget is tabled this month. Keeping this in view, all party activists across the state must get down to work immediately,” Chavan said.

The week-long state budget session of the legislature will be held between February 25 and March 2.

Chavan added that “the Congress is fully geared” for the challenge of twin elections, a sentiment echoed even by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

NCP state spokesperson Nawab Malik said his party was “absolutely prepared” in the eventuality of simultaneous elections and expressed confidence that the ruling saffron combine would be vanquished in both the Lok Sabha and the Assembly polls.

Chavan also appealed to all the opposition parties, especially the Prakash Ambedkar-led Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh, to refrain from doing anything that would split the opposition votes and give advantage to the ruling dispensation.

The debate over holding combined polls in the state has revived even though all the major political parties are yet to finalise their respective alliances with the elections looming large.

With a population of nearly 12 crore, Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats and 288 Assembly constituencies, the second highest in the country after Uttar Pradesh, making it an important state for all the political parties.
