Mayawati not to fight LS poll but open to role at Centre

March 21, 2019 by Nasheman

[Nasheman news]New Delhi Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Wednesday announced that she will not contest Lok Sabha elections so as to be able to campaign effectively across the country but also indicated that her decision did not mean she was ruling herself out of the post-poll Prime Ministerial sweepstakes.

The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, asking her party workers not to be disheartened, said that she had decided not to contest the Lok Sabha election as it will better serve the interests of the party, the movement, the people and the country.

Her BSP, Samjwadi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal are fighting the Lok Sabha polls together in Uttar Pradesh.

During a joint press conference with Mayawati earlier this year, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav had indicated his support to her for a role at the Centre, saying he will be “happy if another Prime Minister comes from the state.”

Analysts said that Mayawati’s decision could be guided by an assessment that the Bharatiya Janata Party will put a strong candidate against her in the seat she contests from so that she is forced to campaign hard there.

Though Mayawati explained reasons for her not contesting in a detailed press release Wednesday afternoon, there was an apprehension that the party rank and file, who want to see her as Prime Minister and play a role in the formation of next government, may get demoralised.

The BSP issued another release in the evening which asked party workers “not to feel even slight demoralisation” because of her decision not to fight the polls as “she was more concerned about the party, movement and the samaj”.

“Don’t get disheartened at all from my decision not to contest Lok Sabha elections for now,” she said.

Mayawati, who is a four-time Lok Sabha MP and four-time Chief Minister, said it is “well-known that she can fight from any seat in the state and the workers of BSP will ensure her victory”.

“But if the workers leave their constituencies out of affections despite my telling them not to, it can impact prospects of the candidates on other seats. The candidates of the alliance should not face any problem.

“It is more important to win every Lok Sabha seat in the state which will empower our mission of social change and economic liberty,” she said.

The party’s first letter hoped that that workers of the party will understand her “missonary decision” and work with full force for the victory of alliance candidates.

“I have full faith that they will as earlier respect the far-sightedness and sacrifice of their behneji (sister),” she said.

The second press release reminded workers that when she became Chief Minister in 1995 for the first time, she was not a member of legislative assembly or council.

“Similarly, there is provision at the Centre where a person has to a member of Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha within six months of holding office of a minister/prime minister,” the release emphasised.

BSP spokesperson Sudhindra Bhadoria told IANS that Mayawati was party’s main campaigner and has to campaign not only in Uttar Pradesh but outside the state also where BSP has put up candidates and where party has alliances.

“If she contests, time will go into that. Time is very limited,” he said.

He also said that party workers were “not at all” demoralised by Mayawati’s decision.

“Don’t use places of worship for propaganda” – Election Commission.

March 20, 2019 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Tuesday asked political parties and religious leaders to refrain from using places of worship for propaganda during the Lok Sabha polls and also not indulge in activities that may cause tensions between different castes and communities.

The poll body’s directions come days after the BJP requested it to appoint special observers at mosques to prevent attempts to “polarise voters on religious lines” during the elections. “As per the Model Code of Conduct, the use of caste and religion during the election campaign is strictly prohibited,” a statement issued by Delhi’s Chief Electoral Officer said.

It said no political and religious leader or any other person is “allowed to indulge in any activity that aggravates existing differences or cause tension between different caste or communities, religious or linguistic”. The Election Commission had on March 11 warned parties in Kerala against using the Sabarimala temple matter in their campaigns, saying “citing or invoking” religious propaganda on the issue is a clear violation of the model code of conduct.

In January 2017, the Supreme Court had outlawed seeking votes in the name of religion, caste, race, community or language. The Lok Sabha elections will begin on April 11 and continue till May 19 across seven phases. The Model Code of Conduct is in place since March 10 when the Election Commission announced the Lok Sabha poll schedule.

Man gets life sentence for 2002 Godhra train burning

March 20, 2019 by Nasheman

Ahmedabad, March 20 (Nasheman News) A Special SIT Court set up at the Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat on Wednesday sentenced one more person to life imprisonment for the 2002 Godhra train carnage.

H.C. Vora, the Special SIT judge, convicted Yakub Pataliya based on submissions made earlier in the case by five other accused.

Nearly 16 years after being booked for the train burning at Godhra, in which 59 Hindu activists died in two coaches of the Sabarmati Express in February 2002, Pataliya was arrested in January 2018.

Pataliya was accused of being a part of the mob which torched the two coaches of Sabarmati Express on February 27, sparking off state-wide riots which lasted for over a month.

In August, Special judge Vora convicted Farukh Bhana and Imran alias Sheru Batik and acquitted Hussain Suleman Mohan, Kasam Bhamedi and Faruk Dhantiya.

The five were arrested by different investigative agencies in 2015-16.

Earlier, the special SIT court convicted 31 people in the case on March 1, 2011.

Dynastic politics destroyed institutions: Modi

March 20, 2019 by Nasheman

New Delhi, March 20 (Nasheman News) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday attacked the Congress for its “dynastic politics” and said its biggest casualty are the institutions.

Addressing voters in his blog post, Modi urged them to remember the Congress’ past when they vote — “how one family’s desire for power cost the nation greatly”.

“From the press to Parliament. From soldiers to free speech. From the constitution to the courts. Institutional insult is the Congress’s way.

“Everyone is wrong, only the Congress is correct. As you go to vote- remember the past and how one family’s desire for power cost the nation …,” Modi said.

“If they (Congress) could do it then, they can surely do it now. Eternal vigilance remains the price of liberty,” he added.

He said India has seen how rise of dynastic politics has forced institutions to take a severe beating.

To prove his point, the Prime Minister said one need not go beyond the party to understand it. He pointed at the Congress’ internal democracy and said if a leader dares to dream to head that party, he or she is shunted out of the Congress.

“Political parties are vibrant bodies that manifest diverse public opinion. Sadly, Congress does not believe in internal democracy. The sense of entitlement can be seen in their conduct towards routine legal processes.

“At present, their top leadership is on bail vis-a-vis a major scam. When the authorities seek to question them on their dealings, they do not even bother to reply,” he said.

Modi urged the voters to “stay vigilant” and work hard to strengthen the intuitions given to the country by the makers of our Constitution.

He also listed his government’s achievement and said in 2014, the people voted decisively for honesty over dynasty, development over decay, security over stagnation, opportunities over obstacles and development over vote-bank politics.

“Indians were tired of our beloved nation being included in the Fragile Five, where corruption, cronyism and nepotism made headlines instead of anything positive. India voted to shed the baggage of the past in pursuit of a better future.

“The mandate of 2014 was epoch-making also because it was for the first time in the history of India that a non-dynastic party was blessed with a complete majority,” he said.

Modi also said when a government works with the spirit of “India First” instead of “family first”, it shows.

“Over the last five years, the Indian economy has been the cynosure of the world’s eyes,” he said.

“India has made remarkable achievements in sanitation coverage, banking the unbanked, financing the un-financed, building futuristic infrastructure, homes for the homeless, providing healthcare for the poor and educating the youth,” he added.

He said reflective of this “paradigm shift” is the fact that now, there was a government that puts institutions above everything else.

Delhi have one of the best bowling attack: Ishant

March 20, 2019 by Nasheman

New Delhi, March 20 (Nasheman News) Delhi Capitals’ pacer Ishant Sharma wants to take wickets than just bowling well in the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The fast bowler, picked for Rs 1.10 crore in the auction, feels this Delhi team has the arsenal to go all out and win the title. The team has the perfect combination of fast and spin bowlers, he said.

Remarking that he has high ambitions for this season, Ishant said, “I am focused on taking more wickets, not just bowling well. Of course, it (wickets) depends on how well you bowl, but the most important thing is you use your good performance by helping the team in taking important wickets.

“Delhi Capitals has some great bowling options for IPL 2019. With the likes of Trent Boult and Kagiso Rabada in the team, I think we have one of the best bowling lineups this time. We have some good all-rounders along with great spinners and that shall help in restricting teams from scoring freely,” the 30-year-old said.

Speaking on his return to Delhi, Ishant said he is extremely happy to represent his hometown in the IPL. “I have played for different teams in the IPL. But it makes me immensely happy to be able to represent Delhi Capitals this season. Being a Delhi boy, it is a great chance for me to represent my home side and my most important target is to make the Capitals win the coveted title,” said the lanky bowler.

“It will be crucial for us to start well against the Mumbai Indians in their home ground. We know the crowd will be behind them, but our team has enough experience to tackle the pressure and perform against a strong lineup. We are all looking forward to playing our first match of the new season.”

The Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals will begin their season against Mumbai Indians on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. They will be playing their first home match on Tuesday as they take on defending champions Chennai Super Kings at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground.

BJP to put up candidates in all 28 seats – says K S Eshwarappa BJP will trounce JDS-Congress combine in Karnataka.

March 20, 2019 by Nasheman

MARCH 20 : Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to put up candidate in all the 28 in Karnataka.
Disclosing this at a media conference here today former Deputy CM and State BJP core committee member, Sri K. S. Eshwarappa said the party would put up candidates in all constituencies including Mandya.

To a query he said the question of supporting independent candidate Sumalatha Ambarish would not arise as the party itself would put up candidate in the segment. Party leaders from Karnataka had detailed discussion with the Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi and BJP President Sri Amit Shah in Delhi yesterday. He was also part of the deliberations and the impression he had got was that the party would field candidates in all seats.

Asked why the announcement of party candidates was being delayed he said it was for the strategic reason and the party’s central election committee would announce the list in a day or two.

Referring the pro Modi slogans in Rahul Gandhi’s meeting at Manyatha Tech Park on Monday, senior BJP leader said, they were not party workers but IT professionals sympathising with the party. The Congress-JDS government in Karnataka tried to silence them using police force, which is condemnable he said and asked “is it wrong to raise pro-Modi slogans?”

There has been groundswell all over the country in favour of Sri Narendra Modi and people especially youths themselves are fighting the elections on behalf of him. The party would win minimum 25 seats in Karnataka, he asserted.

BJP has inducted former Minister Sri. A. Manju into party and is fielding him in Hassan constituency. There may be dissatisfaction here and there but disciplined party workers would abide by the collective decision of the party.

On the Congress president Sri Rahul Gandhi’s possible contesting in one of the segments from the State Sri Eshwarappa quipped “forget him, let his grandma Indiraji come from the heaven, the people of Karnataka wouldn’t be swayed away.

The existential question brought JDS and Congress come together but BJP would trounce this opportunistic alliance. When the people of the country is with Sri Narendra Modi, no one can stop him from becoming Prime Minister again.

MLC Sri Lehar Singh, State party co-spokespersons, Sri. A H Anand, Sri Anwar Manappadi, former Deputy Mayor S. Harish were present.

Long time before Nirav Modi is extradited: Top UK law expert

March 20, 2019 by Nasheman

Mumbai, March 20 (Nasheman News) It could probably be a long time before absconding Mumbai diamantaire Nirav Modi – who was arrested by the London Police on Wednesdy – would actually face the extradition process initiated by the Indian government, a top British law expert said on Wednesday.

Modi was held after a UK court executed an arrest warrant issued against him by the Westminster Court on March 13, which was described as “a major victory” by India.

Last week, Indians were stunned to see a carefree Modi, sporting an Ostrich leather jacket, strutting around in London without worries as Indian agencies moved heaven and earth to trace his whereabouts.

The news of the arrest sent ripples of excitement through the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which dared the opposition Congress to question the developments, at the height of the 2019 parliamentary elections.

Sarosh Zaiwalla, Founder-Senior Partner at Zaiwalla & Co. LLP, UK said that issuing the arrest warrant is a first step of the legal process to extradite Modi – among the prime accused along with his uncle Mehul Choksi and others – in the 2018 Rs.13,500-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam.

“The arrest warrant clearly implies that the court is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds for believing that the conduct described in the request is an aextradition offence. However, as per protocol, Scotland Yard will not address extradition requests until and unless the accused (Modi) has been arrested/presented before the court,” Zaiwalla said.

There is also a time-frame attacked to a warrant – as they do not last forever. So the UK police have upto three months arrest a person – in this case, Modi – after the warrant is issued, the legal luminary told IANS in a brief analysis of the scenario shortly after Modi’s arrest.

Comparing this with another high-profile case of Indian fugitive liquor baron, Vijay Mallya, Zaiwalla said that he (Mallya) was arrested and bailed out nearly two months later, when his extradition hearings began.

“Nirav Modi will be subjected to a re-run of the Mallya case proceedings, starting from being directed to Westminister Magistrate, taken into provisional custody, applying for bail and the then the court will hear his plea,” the 71-year old Mumbai-born lawyer said.

After the court rules for Modi’s extradition, the British Home Secretary would be expected to once again sign the order for compliance. At this stage, complications could arise only if Modi has already acquired the citizenship of any European country or other international citizenship, Zaiwalla explained.

However, it would not matter if Modi remains on UK soil, but there could be delays with a long legal battle ahead subject to various international and extraterritorial legalities involved, cautioned Zaiwalla.

Incidentally, Mehul Choksi has already acquired the citizenship of Antigua & Barbados, as reported by IANS (Jan. 21) and he had surrendered his Indian passport to India’s High Commission in Guyana.

Zaiwalla said it would be interesting to see if Nirav Modi has applied for asylum in UK, then the extradition proceedings are unlikely to begin until that (asylum) application is rejected.

“A person who applies for asylum in the UK is given ‘interim asylum’ and his status as a legal resident of UK remains until his application is finally determined and he is given asylum or rejected,” said Zaiwalla.

Founded in 1982, Zaiwalla & Co. LLP is Asia’s first law firm firm in London and has fought over 1,200 international litigations and arbitrations with clientele ranging from various governments in the world to top global celebrities and political personalities.

England, Pakistan to watch out for in WC: Kuldeep

March 20, 2019 by Nasheman

Kolkata, March 20 (Nasheman News) Despite losing the home ODI series 2-3 to Australia, the Virat Kohli-led Team India is considered the favourites for the upcoming World Cup. However, chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav believes two other teams also have the capability to shine in the showpiece event, starting May 30 in England and Wales.

Kuldeep has said that India have a chance to clinch the trophy but should be aware of England and Pakistan as the two teams which also have some quality players in their side.

The spinner also felt that playing in home conditions will be an advantage for England.

“We definitely have the chance to bring the World Cup home. Apart from us I think all the other teams are really strong,” Kuldeep was quoted as saying by Sports Tak.

“But I feel England has a strong batting lineup as compared to the other teams. They will be playing in home conditions. I think Pakistan will also perform well in the World Cup looking at the way they have been performing,” the 24-year-old opined.

“So I think England and Pakistan will be the ones to watch out for,” he added.

Playing in their last ODI series before the World Cup 2019, India recently suffered a shocking loss to Australia at home. Looking at thier recent ODI perfomences, however, cricket pundits still believe the Men in Blue will be the title favourites.

Pramod Sawant wins trust vote in Goa

March 20, 2019 by Nasheman

Panaji, March 20 (Nasheman News) Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday won the trust vote in the Goa Assembly and pledged to carry forward his late predecessor Manohar Parrikar’s vision of “positive thinking”.

Twenty of the 36 members in the House voted for the coalition government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while 15 opposed the motion.

After the vote, opposition MLAs accused Governor Mridula Sinha of being partisan and facilitating “trading of MLAs” even as Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar said that the Congress would not try to topple the Sawant-led government but instead wait for the ruling coalition to “topple under their collective greed”.

The 20 legislators who voted for the motion included 11 from the BJP, 3 each of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and Goa Forward Party and 3 Independents while 15 MLAs (14 Congress and 1 NCP) opposed the motion.

The ‘magic number’ for a simple majority in the 36-member House was 19. The trust vote was overseen by Acting Speaker and BJP MLA Michael Lobo.

Addressing the Assembly after winning the trust vote, an emotional Sawant said: “Manohar Parrikar had given a message before passing away about being positive. If we go ahead with this message, we can build a bright future for Goa.”

The 45-year-old Chief Minister also said that the philosophy of his government would be the Antodaya principle, which involves reaching out to the most marginalised sections of society.

“And for that to work, it is not just up to a CM or MLA, but every member of society. For this I would the need help of every Goan,” Sawant said.

Sawant, named the Chief Minister on Tuesday, said that portfolios would be allotted later in the day and he would head to Delhi to meet President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah.

Speaking about the Lok Sabha elections and by-elections, Sawant said: “I believe this is a challenge for me and definitely we will win this challenge. We will win both Lok Sabha seats and the Assembly seats.”

A highlight of the brief session was the presence of ailing BJP MLA Pandurang Madkaikar, who suffered a brain stroke in June 2018 and had not made a public appearance since then.

Just before the floor test was ordered by Acting Speaker Michael Lobo, the latter allowed Madkaikar to raise his hand, while sitting in his chair and not stand in agreement or against the motion like the rest of the MLAs, because of his physical disability.

When Madkaikar did raise his hand in support of Sawant-led coalition government, it was with the help of an Assembly marshal who had to hold the BJP’s MLA hand upright.

The other significant development was the switchover of NCP MLA Churchill Alemao from the treasury to the Opposition.

His decision comes at a time when his daughter Valanka is angling for a Congress ticket for the South Goa seat for the Lok Sabha elections.

Speaking to reporters after the trust vote, opposition leader Kavlekar said that it was the first time in recent history in Goa that the treasury benches won a trust vote with a count of 20.

“Never in the past has the majority winning number slipped below 21. This is the reality of how ‘popular’ this government is,” Kavlekar said.

He also slammed the Governor for refusing to invite the Congress to form a government despite being the single largest legislative party.

“She called those in the minority to form a government. The BJP had to perform a midnight circus and crack deals with MLAs to get to the number of 20,” Kavlekar said.
