IPL: 5 mystery spinners to watch out for in 2019

March 18, 2019 by Nasheman

New Delhi, March 18 (Nasheman News) :  The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been the perfect platform for youngsters to showcase their skills and impress the global audience. In the last 11 years, the IPL has seen some quality players make a mark.

With less than a week left for this year’s league to start, it will once again be interesting to see which players rise to the challenge against the best in the business.

IANS takes a look at five mystery spinners who are expected to make a mark this season:

Varun Chakarvarthy

All eyes will be on this mystery spinner as Kings XI Punjab bagged him in the auction in Jaipur for a whopping Rs 8.4 crore – 42 times his base price of Rs 20 lakh.

Playing for Tamil Nadu, Varun bagged 22 wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He has six variations in his kitty: off-break, leg-break, flipper, top-spinner, carrom ball and the googly.

The 27-year-old shot into limelight in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2018, scalping nine wickets from 10 matches, with a decent economy rate of 4.7. Looking at his record, Varun is expected to give batsmen a difficult time.

Mujeeb ur Rahman

Apart from Varun, KXIP have another mystery spinner in Mujeeb ur Rahman. The Afghan spinner had a dream debut season in IPL 2018, bagging 14 wickets in the 11 matches he played. The right arm off-break bowler bowled with an average of 20.64 and an economy rate of just under seven.

Rahman also bowls some unbelievable googlies and under the guidance of his skipper Ravichandran Ashwin, who is an experienced off-spinner himself, the Afghan bowler is expected to only get better with every outing.

Kuldeep Yadav

He has been a part of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the national team for a while, but reading Kuldeep Yadav is a difficult task even now.

The chinaman bowler, retained by the Knights, was one of their best bowlers, picking 18 wickets from 16 games. But the management would want Kuldeep to keep things a little tighter as he was slightly expensive with an economy of 8.14.

KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik will certainly expect the 24-year-old to replicate his show in this edition of the IPL, and alongwith Sunil Narine, Kuldeep is expected to forge a deadly combination.

Washington Sundar

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will be banking on young right-arm off-spinner Washington Sundar to play perfect second fiddle to India’s limited-overs leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

At 19, Sundar is presumed to be one of India’s next generation players. He had a good start to the league in 2017 and had scalped 8 wickets from 11 games, with a decent economy of 6.16.

The Tamil Nadu boy however, faltered in the second season as he managed just four wickets from seven games in 2018 with a poor economy. Sundar will look to leave it behind and start afresh in this year’s league.

RCB have shown faith in the youngster and picked him for Rs 3.20 crore in the auctions, and Sundar will surely look to perform to the expectations of the franchise.

Mahipal Lomror

Another name to watch out for will be Rajasthan Royals’ Mahipal Lomror.

Little known in the cricketing world before now, Lomror gained recognition based on his performances in India’s Under-19 campaign during the World Cup in 2016. In the six games, Lomror scalped seven wickets with an impressive economy of 3.74.

The 19-year-old didn’t get much chance to showcase his talent in IPL after featuring in just two games for the Royals last year.

However, given his record, Lomror will definitely be a spinner to watch out for. With the players having little knowledge about Lomror, the young spinner can certainly use the surprise element to his advantage.

KPCC formally asks Rahul to fight polls from state

March 18, 2019 by Nasheman

Bengaluru, March 18 (Nasheman News) Karnataka Congress chief Dinesh Gundu Rao on Monday formally invited Congress President Rahul Gandhi to contest the Lok Sabha elections from the state.

In his letter to the party chief, Gundu Rao noted that the state has always stood by the Congress in “troubled times” and it had in the past returned his mother Sonia Gandhi and grandmother Indira Gandhi to the Lok Sabha.

The letter was sent three days after Gundu Rao made a similar request on the social media and posted it on Twitter.

He said if Gandhi accepted the offer, it “will give very good message across south India.”

There has been a growing demand from Congress leaders in the south that Gandhi should contest the Lok Sabha elections from a seat there, as well.

The party has already announced that Gandhi will contest from his traditional seat of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP is likely to again field Union Minister Smriti Irani against him.

Gandhi had won the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Amethi by a margin of 1.07 lakh votes, while he had won the seat by a substantially higher margin of over 3.70 lakh votes in the 2009 general elections.

The letter to Gandhi said that the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) “takes pride to invite you to kindly contest from Karnataka in the coming Lok Sabha election.”

“Our state has stood by the Congress party whenever we were in troubled times. The present scenario in India is that our party will emerge stronger in the ensuing elections,” it said.

The letter said that Gandhi’s candidature from Karnataka “will not only boost the rank and file of our party in the entire state but also in South India.”

“The ruling NDA is losing its shine and our alliance in the south is on a strong wicket. The state had the honour of sending former Prime Minister Indira Gandhiji and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhiji to the Lok Sabha in the past,” it said.

In his tweet earlier, Rao had urged Gandhi to consider contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Karnataka.

Other party leaders including former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have made similar requests to Gandhi.

Incidentally Dinesh Gundu Rao’s father R. Gundu Rao along with party leader Devaraj Urs had played a crucial role in Indira Gandhi’s victory in a Lok Sabha bypoll in Chikmagalur in 1978, which marked her political comeback.

Indira Gandhi had defeated Janata Party candidate Veerendra Patil in the bye-election held after the defeat of her party in the 1977 general elections.

Sonia Gandhi, one year into politics, had won from Bellary in Karnataka against BJP leader Sushma Swaraj in 1999.

We are capable of defeating BJP in UP: SP, BSP

March 18, 2019 by Nasheman

Lucknow, March 18 (Nasheman News) A day after the Congress announced that it will not contest on seven Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and BSP leader Mayawati on Monday said that their alliance was capable of defeating the BJP.

In a series of tweets, Mayawati said: “BSP wants to make it clear that there will be no alliance with the Congress in Uttar Pradesh and across the country. Our party workers should not get diverted by the false news spread by the Congress.”

In another tweet, the former Chief Minister added: “Congress is free to contest on all the 80 seats in the state. The alliance of the BSP is fully capable of defeating BJP in the state. The Congress should not spread the news that it is leaving seven seats for the (BSP-SP) alliance.”

Soon after, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav also gave a cold shoulder to the Congress.

He tweeted: “In Uttar Pradesh, the SP-BSP-RLD alliance is capable of defeating the BJP. The Congress should not create any kind of confusion.”

On Sunday, Congress state unit chief Raj Babbar announced that the party will not contest from seven seats — leaving them for the Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) alliance which has left two seats for the Congress in the state.

Babbar said that the Congress will not field candidates from Mainpuri, Firozabad and Kannauj and in the seats to be contested by Mayawati, RLD leaders Ajit Singh and Jayant Chaudhary as well as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Mainpuri is represented by SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The BSP is contesting 38 of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, the SP on 37 and the RLD on three.

Owaisi files nomination for 4th term from Hyderabad

March 18, 2019 by Nasheman

Hyderabad, March 18 (Nasheman News)Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday filed the nomination for the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat.

A couple of hours after the poll process began with the issue of notification by election authorities, the outgoing MP from Hyderabad filed his papers before Returning Officer K. Manicka Raj, the Hyderabad District Collector.

Taking everyone by surprise, Owaisi along with his party’s senior leader and MLA Ahmed Pasha Khadri reached the District Collector’s office and filed his nomination.

“Alhamdulilah, filed my nomination papers today. Hyderabad Parliamentary Constituency has been the voice of India’s impoverished, oppressed and weak. Inshallah, it will continue to be so,” tweeted Owaisi.

The MIM leader is seeking re-election from Hyderabad for a fourth consecutive term. The parliamentary constituency has been a MIM stronghold for over three decades.

His father Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi represented the constituency and was elected for six consecutive terms from 1984 to 2004.

Congress leaders to stake claim in Goa

March 18, 2019 by Nasheman

Panaji, March 18 (Nasheman News) Amid speculation that Goa’s Assembly may be kept in suspended animation due to political turmoil, Congress leader Chandrakant Kavlekar on Monday reached Raj Bhavan to stake claim to form the government.

Speaking to reporters outside Raj Bhavan, Leader of Opposition Kavlekar said that Governor Mridula Sinha had not given an appointment to the Congress delegation despite repeated requests.

“The Congress rightfully deserved to be called for staking claim because it is the single largest party in the state Legislative Assembly,” he said.

“We do not have an appointment, because she is refusing to give us time. Despite that, we have arrived here to meet the Governor to stake our claim. It is our right as the single largest party in the Goa assembly,” Kavlekar added.

The Congress has 14 MLAs in the 36-member Legislative Assembly, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 12 legislators.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has been campaigning in Goa and trying to forge an alliance with members of the coalition government that was led by late Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

While the negotiations appeared to have hit a road block, sources claim that the BJP was pressing for speaker Pramod Sawant as its chief minister candidate, something which the allies appear reluctant to accept.

Congress, JD-S seat pact to ‘outsmart’ BJP in Karnataka (Dangal 2019)

March 18, 2019 by Nasheman

Bengaluru, March 18,(Nasheman News): Karnataka’s ruling coalition allies Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) hope to “outsmart” the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by jointly contesting the 28 Lok Sabha seats across the state in April, a party official said.

“With the JD-S and Congress contesting together, there will be no splitting of secular votes in the state. The seat-sharing pact well positions our parties to outsmart the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections,” JD-S spokesman and a former Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Ramesh Babu told IANS.

The vision of the coalition allies was to combine their forces to keep the BJP out of winning the majority seats, he added.

The ruling parties committed to a pre-poll alliance for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections in the state, to be held in two phases on April 18 and 23, with eight seats for the JD-S and 20 for the Congress.

Admitting that JD-S and Congress, which bitterly fought against each other in the May 2018 Assembly elections, had differences in a few constituencies, Babu said the parties were working to strengthen their unity.

“We fought the Assembly elections as rivals, particularly in the old Mysuru region, where both parties have significant strength. So, it is natural for differences to exist. The parties’ leaders are working to resolve the differences right down to the worker level,” the JD-S spokesman said.

The Congress party also believes that if the coalition partners stay united and end their “bickering”, they can “comfortably” win the Lok Sabha elections.

“If the JD-S and Congress stay united, they can project the failures of BJP at the Centre like the issue of unemployment. We can comfortably win the Lok Sabha elections if the parties avoid bickering,” Congress state unit Vice President B.K. Chandrashekar told media.

The BJP was far less likely to benefit due to the “charm” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the ensuing general elections, the Congress leader said.

“The Modi factor did not work for the BJP in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan Assembly elections in 2018 either, and it just about saved them in Gujarat Assembly elections in 2017. It is far less likely to work for the BJP in Karnataka during the general elections,” Chandrashekar explained.

The JD-S and Congress leaders expect the Rs 48,000-crore farm loan waiver announced by the coalition government of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to have a positive impact on the poll outcome.

“Farm loan waiver is a palliative to farmers. If we didn’t waive the loans, the indefinite suffering of farmers will continue,” the Congress leader added.

The BJP, on the other hand, mocked the JD-S and Congress seat-sharing pact as “superficial”.

“The seat-sharing agreement is only on paper and is a superficial one. The two parties fought against each other in the Assembly elections in 2018. Their workers still can’t stand one another and are spewing venom against each other,” BJP state unit spokesman G. Madhusudhan told IANS.

The infighting between the two parties will only help BJP win more votes, he added.

“We are sure to gain more votes due to the positive work that has been done by the Modi government and also from the congenial atmosphere in the country after the recent air strikes against Pakistan in retaliation to the (February 14) Pulwama attack,” the BJP leader asserted.

The “patriotic” atmosphere that prevails after the air strikes would favour the right-wing party across the country, the spokesman assessed.

While the BJP was aiming to win at least 20 of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies, the coalition parties were together aiming to win in 22 seats.

Sumalatha to contest as Independent from Mandya

March 18, 2019 by Nasheman

Bengaluru, March 18,Nasheman News :  South Indian multi-lingual actress Sumalatha, widow of late Karnataka Congress leader M.H. Ambareesh, on Monday announced her decision to contest the Lok Sabha election as an Independent from Mandya.

“People of Mandya had a lot of faith in Ambareesh. I want to take forward his vision for Mandya. I will be contesting the elections as an Independent from the constituency,” Sumalatha told the media here.

Ambareesh, who passed away in November 2018, represented Mandya, about 100 km from here, in the Lok Sabha.

Admitting that she was expecting Congress to field her from the Lok Sabha seat, Sumalatha remarked that the party did not fight for Mandya constituency from coalition partner Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S).

As part of the seat-sharing agreement between the ruling allies, JD-S will contest from eight seats, including Mandya, while Congress will contest in the remaining 20 seats.

The JD-S, which currently holds the Mandya seat, announced that Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil, 29, as its candidate from the seat.

“As Ambareesh’s widow, it is my job to serve the people of Mandya,” 55-year-old Sumalatha added.
