Bappi Lahiri’s song might feature in Marvel Studios’ film

March 5, 2019 by Nasheman

B

[Nasheman news] New Delhi It was back in 2017 when Hollywood star Chris Pratt said “Whoa… wow” after watching a special Hindi promotional clip of his movie “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2” that featured Bappi Lahiri’s foot-tapping song “Jhoom jhoom jhoom baba”.

The Indian veteran singer-composer says he is in talks with Marvel Studios for one of their upcoming movies.

Over the years, some of the Indian elements have managed to find their way in Marvel superhero films. Remember Robert Downey Jr.’s character Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) attending an Indian wedding in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” or the Indian slum scenes in “The Avengers”?

If things work out, then one of Bappi Lahiri’s songs will feature in a Marvel film.

“I am currently in talks with Marvel Studios. They had used my song ‘Jhoom jhoom jhoom baba’. Chris Pratt, the hero of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2’, had really liked the song. So maybe a song (by me) will be used in their next film. I will go to Hollywood in April,” Bappi told IANS in a telephonic interview.

While he is yet to sign on the dotted line for the Marvel association, his other international collaborations with rapper Snoop Dogg and singer Akon are complete.

Acting has also been keeping him busy. He recently made a cameo in Sony Entertainment Television’s show “Ladies Special”.

“I have acted in so many films, including ‘Kalakaar’. I had done ‘Indian Idol’, but this (‘Ladies Special’) is the first time that I worked on a TV show. It’s today’s story about women travelling by a train and making friends during their journey,” he said.

In the show, he acted as a musician providing a platform to new talent.

“In real life also, I have always encouraged new singers. I had introduced many singers, including Usha Uthup and Alisha Chinai. So, my character is the way how I am in real life,” said the “Yaar bina chain kahan re” hitmaker, who likes to work in different film industries such as Bengali and Telugu.

The artiste with about a 50-year-long career has even been a film director. After helming a documentary called “We are One”, he is set to direct a musical.

“This year, I am directing a movie titled ‘Ek Adhura Sangeet’,” said Bappi.

What about a film on his life?

“Yes, a lot of people are approaching me to make a film on my life but I haven’t finalised anything. The biopic should start by this year,” he said.

“Actor Ranveer Singh could proabably play my younger version…you know the 1970s, 80′ and 90s time,” he added.

15th Annual National Conference on Electoral and Political Reforms

March 4, 2019 by Nasheman

L The second day of the two-day long 15th Annual National Conference, organized by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and the Uttar Pradesh Election Watch (UPEW) at DDU State Institute of Rural Development on the 2nd and 3rd March 2019, was successfully concluded.

The first session of the day focused on “Information & Communication Technology (ICT) for Better Governance”, chaired by Maj. Gen. Anil Verma (Retd), Head-ADR and National Election Watch. The panel members included Mr. Jaskirat Singh, Trustee – ADR/NEW and Founder – CRAMAT, Mr. Chandrakant Naidu, Chief Editor at NewsNest, Ms. Shelley Thakral, Head of Programs, Facebook and Mr. Rakesh Reddy Dubbudu, Founder Factly.in and ADR State Coordinator – Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The issues raised during the discussion by some of the panelists focused on technology as a force multiplier for improving the lives of people, by helping them perform better and faster as well as on its role in promoting good governance. At the same time, the issue of misuse of ICT by spreading fake news was also discussed. The panel agreed that simplification of government process, reduction of human intervention, improving transparency and timely delivery of services are some of the goals of ICT.

Mr. Rakesh Reddy Dubbudu said ICT works better in absence of human intervention in instances like online ticketing while it fails where human intervention is needed as in case of online grievance redressal.

Ms. Shelley Thakral asserted that sharing the right information is key. She added that a bottom-up approach is needed for ensuring that ICT is used for better governance.

The discussion concluded with panel members collectively advocating the need for digital literacy by educating masses about how to use information technology.

The second and the final session of the day was a discussion on “Role of Youth & Voter Awareness: In preparation for General Elections 2019” chaired by Dr. Vipul Mudgal, Director of Common Cause and Trustee ADR.

Shri Lakku Venkateshwarlu, IAS, Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Heera Lal, IAS, District Magistrate & Collector, Banda and Mohd Zeeshan, Founder of YES Foundation, Lucknow were some of the panel members.

Strengthening democracy through awareness among voters especially the youth, increasing voter participation and responsible and ethical voting were some of the issues raised by the panel members and audience during the discussion.

Speaking on the efforts to improve the voter turnout in Banda, Shri Heera Lal spoke about fixing a target of 90 per cent voter turnout in the upcoming elections in Banda, including reaching out to disabled voters. He talked about using cultural programs as a means to reach out to voters.

Concluding the discussion, Shri Lakku Venkateshwarlu said that politicians are driven by vested and sectarian interests and are not committed to public cause.

Speaking on the Resolutions and ‘Next Steps for National Election Watch (NEW)’, Prof. Trilochan Sastry (Founder member & Trustee – ADR/NEW) recommended that in order to prevent electoral malpractices, an example needs to be set by suspending elections in five such constituencies where Model Code of Conduct is violated.

The two-day national conference concluded with Maj. Gen Anil Verma (Retd) thanking all the panelists, participants, DDU State Institute of Rural Development, and ADR team for making the event a success.

Act against terror groups, UK PM Theresa May tells Pakistan’s Imran Khan

March 4, 2019 by Nasheman

terror,Theresa May,Imran Khan

Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday spoke to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and told him to act against terror groups, days after expressing “deep concern” over tensions between India and Pakistan prompted by the recent Pulwama attack.

A Downing Street Spokesperson said: “The Prime Minister spoke to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan today. She welcomed his commitment to reducing tensions with India, and the return of Wing Commander Abhinandan”.

May and Imran discussed the need to address the causes of the conflict, the spokesperson said, and added: “The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of Pakistan taking action against all terrorist groups, in support of global efforts to combat terrorism.”

India has blamed the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed for the Pulwama attack, in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed. The group is banned in the United Kingdom since 2001.

The House of Commons held an extended debate last week on Jammu and Kashmir, while May called for “urgent restraint” and de-escalation of hostilities between the two countries.

May said on Wednesday: “We are in regular contact with both countries urging dialogue and diplomatic solutions to ensure regional stability. We are working closely with international partners, including through the UN Security Council, to de-escalate tensions and are monitoring developments closely and considering implications for British nationals.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn responded: “We strongly support rapid dialogue between India and Pakistan in order to reduce the tension and deal with the root causes of the conflict before more lives are lost.”

Schools, mosques and orphanages run by Jamaat-e-Islami : J-K govt

March 4, 2019 by Nasheman

Amid rumours that the Jammu and Kashmir government is contemplating to seal the mosques and schools run by the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), the state government has denied any such move.

Government’s spokesperson Rohit Kansal has categorically said schools, mosques and orphanages had been kept outside the scope of seizures and sealing in the wake of the ban imposed by the Government of India on Jamaat-e-Islami, J&K.

“Action is being taken against offices, assets, properties and other equipment of the banned organisation,” Kansal said in a statement, adding that the ban would be for five years and was subsequent to orders issued by the state government and the deputy commissioners concerned.

The government’s clarification came on Monday when a lot of rumour-mongering on the issue was being done reportedly with the intention to instigate people, particularly in the Kashmir valley.

The Kashmir-centric politicians were adding fuel to the fire by endorsing such rumours.

National Conference leader and former chief minister Omar Abdullah, in a tweet, said: “While the government may take some time to review the need to ban the JeI there is an need to urgently review the ban on schools & the sealing of mosques.”

PDP leader and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has described the ban on JeI as “muscular approach” of the Modi government.

Meanwhile, police have detained more than 100 activists of JeI and sealed the properties of the organisation in the Valley and some areas of Jammu division.

Last week, the Central government banned the Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, declaring it an “unlawful association”.

The order issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs said the organisation had “been indulging in activities which are prejudicial to internal security and public order and have the potential of disrupting the unity and integrity of the country”.

Pakistan refuses to open Rah-e-Milan Gate at J & K’s Poonch for cross-LoC bus service

March 4, 2019 by Nasheman

While Pakistan restored the Samjhauta Express train services between Lahore and Delhi, the neighbouring country refused to open the Rah-e-Milan Gate at Poonch on Monday, forcing the weekly cross-LoC (Line of Control) Rawalakot bus service to return without crossing over to India, reports media.

The weekly service was earlier suspended following escalating tensions between the two nations after the Pulwama terror attack on 14 February in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed. But it was subsequently resumed.

The tension between the two nations, however, escalated following the Indian Air Force’s attacks on Jaish-e-Mohammed’s training camp at Balakot in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on 26 February. A day later, on 27 February, Pakistani fighter jets had violated Indian air space in Nowshera sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district. During a dogfight with Pakistan Air Force (PAF), Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman had shot down a Pakistani F-16 before he was downed and captured by Pakistan Army personnel. Abhinandan was later handed over to Indian authorities on 1 March at the Wagah-Attari border.

The service was first started on the 170-kilometre-long Srinagar-Muzaffarabad route in Kashmir on 7 April, 2005 and billed as one of the biggest confidence-building measures.

The Poonch-Rawalakot route in the Jammu region was started on 20 June, 2006 to facilitate easier trade and travel between the divided families of Jammu and Kashmir and PoK.

The Poonch-Rawalakot service ferries passengers from Poonch town to the Chakan-Da-Bagh crossing on the Rah-e-Milan, a 10 km stretch of road.

The bus service had been suspended several times in the past too. In 2017, the facility remained suspended for nearly 17 weeks due to heavy firing and shelling from the Pakistani side. About 119 passengers from both sides were left stranded in Poonch and PoK at that time.

BJP-Congress slugfest continues over IAF strikes

March 4, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : The IAF air strike in Pakistan remained at the centre of political slugfest on Sunday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi lashed out at the Opposition for questioning the counter-terror operation while the Congress hit back by accusing the BJP of playing politics over national security.

The Indian Air Force on February 26 conducted an air strike in Pakistan’s Balakot targeting a training camp of the Jaish-e Mohammad, the militant group which claimed responsibility for the Pulwama terror attack that killed 40 CRPF troopers.

Addressing a government event at Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi – the Lok Sabha constituency of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Modi lashed out at the Congress for “putting personal interest over national interest”.

Hitting back to the Congress over the Rafale deal, Modi held it responsible for hindering the IAF from getting the state-of-art fighter jets from France.

“Every one, from the Supreme Court to the CAG, have called the deal transparent, but some people continue to spread misinformation,” said Modi, who has been repeatedly targeted by Gandhi over the Rafale deal.

Earlier, addressing a rally in Patna, Modi accused the Opposition of demoralising the security forces by asking for proof of the IAF air strike.

Referring to 21 opposition parties collectively accusing the BJP of “blatantly politicising” the sacrifices of the armed forces, Modi said that by making such statements, they were playing into the hands of India’s enemies.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley also came out all guns blazing against the opposition parties, saying their statements were an instrument in Pakistan’s hands to discredit India.

“At a meeting of 21 opposition parties, a resolution was passed accusing the Prime Minister of politicising the Pulwama and Balakot incidents. The government had twice taken the opposition leaders into confidence. No evidence of politicisation was given.

“I hope the Opposition revisits its position and does not let down the nation,” he said in a blog post, adding that the “inappropriate statements gave a handle to the enemy.”

The Congress hit back at Modi with party spokesperson Manish Tewari questioning why several major terror attacks happened under his regime. He also asserted that the Congress or the Opposition did not question the IAF operation.

Pointing to Union Minister S.S. Ahluwalia’s remarks that the air strike was meant to “warn the terrorists and not kill them”, Tewari said it was Modi himself and the BJP who were playing with interests of the nation.

“You have the Prime Minister saying that if Rafale would have been there, things would have been different. Then you have a Union Minister and a close confidante of Modi, S.S Ahluwalia, who says the air strike was meant to warn, not kill the terrorists.

“What do the statements mean? Who is actually playing with national interests and dampening the morale of the armed forces? It’s not the Opposition, which has conducted itself extremely honourably,” Tewari told the media here.

“It is the BJP government, starting from the Prime Minister and down to their Union
Ministers, which is raising questions and playing politics over the air strike,” he added.

India, Bangladesh begin joint military exercise

March 4, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : India and Bangladesh on Sunday began a two-week-long joint military exercise in Tangail, Bangladesh, to hone their tactical and technical skills to counter insurgency and terrorism.

“The eighth edition of the exercise “Sampriti” started at the Bongobondhu Cantonment, Tangail, Bangladesh, with an impressive opening ceremony on March 3. The participating contingents stood side by side and gave a ceremonial salute to the national flags of both the countries to the strains of ‘Jana Gana Mana’ and ‘Amar Shonar Bangla’,” the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

The Bangladesh contingent was represented by the 36 East Bengal Battalion, while the Indian side was represented by the 9th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles.

“The aim of the exercise is to increase mutual cooperation, bonhomie and camaraderie between the two armies through inter-operability and joint tactical exercises,” read the government statement.

A company group from the Bangladesh Army and an equal number from the Indian Army are taking part in the exercise that will see them hone tactical and technical skills in countering insurgency and terrorism and aid the civil authorities in disaster management in an United Nations peace keeping scenario, involving combined deployment at a battalion level.

The exercise, which was started in 2009 with a platoon level engagement, graduated to the company level in 2015.

Nikhil To Contest From Mandya

March 4, 2019 by Nasheman

The stage is set for the political debut of Nikhil Gowda, son of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy. The JD(S) leadership, the father-son duo of H D Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy, on Sunday made it apparent that Nikhil would contest from Mandya in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The party’s indication comes days after Sumalatha, wife of late actor-politician Ambareesh, said she aspired to contest from Mandya on a Congress ticket. Nikhil’s candidature will mark the entry of Gowda’s second grandson into electoral politics, as the JD(S) patriarch said in Mangaluru on Sunday that Prajwal Revanna will contest from Hassan.

Defending ‘dynastic politics’, Kumaraswamy said in Shivamogga that there is nothing wrong if politicians’ children enter politics just the way the children of IAS officers follow in their parents’ footsteps. He said Nikhil had expressed his willingness to contest from Mandya, which “will be left to a JD(S) candidate”.

Though Congress and JD(S) have decided to fight the parliamentary polls together, they are yet to finalise a seat-sharing arrangement. The coalition coordination committee will meet on Monday to discuss the issue.

“Some MLAs of Mandya district, considering my achievements, opine that the district will be well developed if someone from my family is fielded in the constituency.“The candidate will be from the JD(S). If Nikhil wants to contest from Mandya, he will not run away to Mysuru. Ours is a family of fighters. We don’t back off. Our family knows the pulse of the people of Mandya,” Kumaraswamy told reporters in Shivamogga.

In Mangaluru, Deve Gowda said he tried to dissuade his grandsons from entering politics but Prajwal started actively working in Hassan.“Now, Nikhil has also started showing keen interest in politics and people urge him to contest from Mandya. He shouldn’t feel that I am promoting only Prajwal, so I have given my consent to him as well,” he said.

Gowda said it was not wrong for anyone to want to contest elections, but Mandya and Hassan were JD(S) bastions. He was replying to a question about Sumalatha too being an aspirant.“It is not that I am promoting family politics. Everyone knows that we are not traditionally a political family but an agrarian one.”Asked about he contesting parliamentary elections, he said that it was not important. He had been a parliamentarian for 27 years and had been a Prime Minister too.

“The ultimate goal is stopping BJP from gaining strength in the state. BJP has no big presence in South India and it is important to stop them from gaining ground,” he said.Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said he always presented himself as the strongest leader and boasted that he had given a stable government. “Even Vajpayee (later former PM) had given a stable government in spite of having a coalition of 23 parties and so did Manmohan Singh for ten years with a coalition,” he said.

During his tenure as prime minister he had visited Kashmir five times and the situation was more peaceful then. In last five years, Kashmir which had seen four governments, had finally come under governor rule.

‘Many factors in my favour’

Nikhil Gowda seems a confident young man. He tells Bansy Kalappa that there are many factors in his favour. “Firstly, all the eight assembly segments have JD(S) MLAs and secondly since we are in a coalition government, there is additional Congress support for my candidature. Thirdly, my father and Chief Minister Kumaraswamy’s connect with the people of Mandya is very good.”

JeM chief Masood Azhar is ‘alive’, says Pakistan media amid reports of his death

March 4, 2019 by Nasheman

The Indian officials said they had no information other than that Azhar was undergoing treatment at an army hospital after suffering renal failure.

Masood Azhar

India’s most wanted terrorist and Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar is “alive”, a Pakistani media report said on Sunday, quoting unnamed sources close to his family.

The media reports claiming that JeM leader is dead are false, Geo Urdu News reported.

The report came amid speculation on social media that JeM founder has died.

However, there was no official confirmation.

Quoting unnamed sources close to the family of the JeM chief, the channel said Azhar is “alive”, without elaborating on his health condition.

There was no official word on Azhar’s fate from the Pakistan government.

“I don’t know anything at this moment,” Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry told media when asked about media reports claiming the death of Azhar.

A resident of Bahawalpur in Pakistan’s Punjab province, Azhar formed the Jaish-e-Mohammed in 2000.

The 50-year-old Azhar, who was released by the NDA government in 1999 in exchange of hostages of the hijacked Indian Airlines plane IC-814, has been accused of being the mastermind of the 2001 Parliament attack, suicide attack on Jammu and Kashmir state assembly, attack on Pathankot IAF base and the latest Pulwama terror strike.

Meanwhile, Intelligence agencies in New Delhi were trying to ascertain reports on social media about the death of Azhar in Pakistan.

The Indian officials said they had no information other than that Azhar was undergoing treatment at an army hospital after suffering renal failure.

Jaish terror group’s Balakot camp, where training was imparted to recruits to carry out suicide attacks, was targeted by the IAF in an air strike last week, following the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed.

The Indian government has claimed that it achieved spectacular success by destroying the facility.

In an interview to Media, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi earlier admitted that the JeM chief is in his country and is “very unwell”, but said the government can act against him only if India presents “solid” and “inalienable” evidence that can stand in a court of law.

“He is in Pakistan, according to my information. He is unwell to the extent that he can’t leave his house, because he’s really unwell,” Shah Mehmood Qureshi said.

The US, the UK and France have moved a fresh proposal in the UN Security Council to designate Pakistan-based terror group JeM’s chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist, a listing that will subject him to global travel ban, asset freeze and arms embargo.

The proposal was moved Wednesday by the three permanent veto-wielding members of the 15-nation Security Council.

The Security Council Sanctions Committee will have 10 working days to consider the fresh proposal submitted by the three members.

It is the fourth such bid at the UN in the last 10 years to list Azhar as a global terrorist.
