Sons of two former CMs in fray from Shivamogga LS seat

April 16, 2019 by Nasheman

Bengaluru, Apr 16 : Shivamogga, once the cradle of the socialist movement in Karnataka and now a BJP’s hunting ground, is witnessing a fierce battle between sons of two former chief ministers to gain entry to Parliament in the April 23 elections.

The Shivamogga seat, which went to bypolls in November, in which the BJP candidate B Y Raghavendra, son of former Karnataka Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, had won with a comfortable margin, is once again
facing Madhu Bangarappa, the JD(S)-Congress alliance, candidate, also son of late S Bangarappa, also a former Chief minister.

The BJP candidate and the sitting Lok Sabha member had to sweat it out to pip the JD(S) candidate in the November-2018 bypolls, is leaving no stone unturned to woo the voters, who had sent him twice to Parliament in the past.

While the district is in the news for the outbreak of the monkey fever, a disease usually found in forest covered areas, the issues of regularisation of the unauthorised cultivation of revenue and forest land, closure of the Mysore Paper Mills, the sickness of the Visvesvaraya Steel plant also hogs the limelight in the district.

While the sitting BJP member Raghavendra is yet to come out of the shell of his father B S Yeddyurappa’s clout despite being elected as the Lok Sabha member to the Karnataka Assembly, the Congress supported JD(S) candidate Madhu Bangarappa, is also banking on the popularity of his late father and former chief minister S Bangarappa.

The JD(S)-Congress alliance candidate Madhu Bangarappa is trying to win the focus of the voters by highlighting the achievements of the JD(S)-Congress, coalition government, including that of farm loan waiver, several pro-people populist schemes introduced by the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah.

The BJP candidate Raghavendra is trying to woo the voters by pointing out his achievements, including that of sanctioning of Natinal Highways, extension of Railway networks, introduction of new trains between Bengaluru and Shivamogga.

The strong impact of the undercurrent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s wave, and a well knitted Sangh Pariwar volunteers should come to the aid of the Saffron candidate, Raghavendra, the pre-poll alliance between JD(S) and the Congress is working in favour of Madhu Bangarappa.

The constituency, consisting significant number of Lingayats, Brahmins, SC and STs, beside OBCs, seems to have been divided as the supporters of both the parties, with an exception of the Muslim minorities.

While prima facie it appears, it should be a cakewalk for the BJP, as the saffron party was succeeded in getting as many as 7 Assembly seats in the 2018 Elections, while the JD(S) drew blank and the Congress one.

?However with the coming together of anti-BJP parties, the outcome would be different this time? Manjunath, a paper vendor, opined.

While as many as 12 candidates, including BSP are in the fray, the main fight is between two traditional rivals, Congress supported JD(S) and the BJP in the constituency, which goes to poll on April-23, the second phase elections in Karnataka.

Coalition partners Congress, JD(S) face acid test in Old Mysore region

April 16, 2019 by Nasheman

Mysuru, Apr 16 : The arch foes turned coalition partners in Karnataka ? Congress and Janata Dal (S), who have forged a pre-poll alliance for the first time in the State’s electoral history face a stern test in the five Lok Sabha seats of Old Mysore region for which the polling will be held in the first phase on April 18.
Despite hiccups when some Congress party workers and leaders refused to campaign in support of Janata Dal (S) candidates until Congress State and central leadership intervened. But the mistrust is refusing to die causing anxiety among the candidates as well as the State and central leaders.
Prominent among those who are contesting in this election from coalition parties if former Prime Minister H D Devegowda (Tumakuru) and his grandsons Prajwal Revanna (Hassan) and Nikhil K (Mandya). While Prajwal is the son of PWD Minister H D Revanna, Nikhil is the son of chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, the two sons of Devegowda.
The other two seats are Mysuru and Chamarajanagara segments.
Which the ruling coalition giving final touches to seeking voters in the region retain the four seats, countdown began the end of public campaigning today.
Both third generation Devegowda family candidates are facing tough task against A Manju the BJP candidate in Hassan and actor Sumalatha, an independent candidate supported by the BJP in Mandya.
In the other two seats in the region, Congress has fielded C H Vijyashankar in Mysuru while R Dhruvanarayana is contesting from Chamarajanagara. Both are fighting against BJP sitting member Pratap Simha and former union minister V Sreenivasa Prasad.
The high voltage election campaign in this region with BJP bringing in prime minister Narendra Modi, who addressed the a hugely successful rally in Mysuru, and state leaders former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and others are on the campaign in these parts.
Congress party has roped in the AICC President Rahul Gandhi who addressed the joint rally at K R Nagara, Devegowda along with Congress leaders including former chief minister Siddaramiah campaigned jointly in all the five constituencies .
Meanwhile, chief minister H D Kumraswamy, who has taken the elections seriously as the fate of his son is involved and any loss in Mandya may ultimately destabilise the State government itself made several rounds of the campaign in Mandya alone.
JDS even brought Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandra Babu Nadu who campaigned for the Nikhil yesterday.
JD-S sources told UNI that despite reluctance on part of some Congress leaders and workers in Mandya and Hassan, the party had made all efforts to ensure victory of its candidates using its cadre.
”As we are sharing power in the state, a pre-poll alliance to jointly contest the Lok Sabha polls will prevent division of votes in a straight fight with the BJP, unlike in a triangular contest that benefits our rival party (BJP),” a JD(S) leader said.
Deve Gowda himself is contesting from Tumkur, and not his old constituency Hassan, from where he won for record six times since 1991.
While Prajwal is expected to sail through from the Gowda family turf of Hassan, his cousin Nikhil is facing a tough fight from multilingual actress Sumalatha Ambareesh, wife of later actor-turned politician M H Ambareesh.
The saffron party has stayed away from a direct fight in these elections, owning to its weak presence in Mandya.
Though 29-year-old Nikhil is betting on the support of his politically-dominant Vokkaliga community and the party’s legislators who won from all the eight Assembly segments in the constituency in the May 2018 elections, 55-year-old Sumalatha is no pushover. She is betting on the popularity of her late husband, a native of Mandya, who won the seat thrice, twice on Congress and once on JD-S ticket.
Ambareesh, a legislator from the Mandya Assembly seat and a minister in the Congress government (2013-2016), died on November 24, 2018 in Bengaluru at the age of 66, generating a massive sympathy wave for Sumalatha from his legion of fans.
Though the alliance partners have agreed to campaign together for joint candidates in all 28 seats, the district Congress leaders and cadres in Mandya, however, refused to join their JD-S counterparts to seek votes for Nikhil due to simmering discontent.
The rivalry between the two parties is so intense that even in Hassan, Congress members are not campaigning for Prajwal who faces A. Manju, a former Congress Minister who joined the BJP recently.
In retaliation, the JD-S workers have refused to campaign for Congress candidate Vijayashankar in Mysore. However, with the intervention of the former chief minister Siddaramiah and district incharge minister G T Deve Gowda, they begun their joint campaign which has eased the tension to some extend.
In Chamarajanagara, the campaign by both the parties are based on road shows and rallies, besides they are reaching out the voters directly in door-to door visits.
During the last 2014 elections JD-S has won Hassan and Mandya, BJP in Mysuru and Congress had won in Chamarajanagara and Tumakuru.

Modi not serious about farmers problems: Sharad Pawar

April 16, 2019 by Nasheman

Osmanabad, Apr 16 : Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state Chief minister Devendra Fadanvis of not being serious about issues of farmers.
“Apart from solving problems of farmers, the present dispensation is only involved in criticizing Gandhi-Nehru family in their election campaigning” Mr Pawar said.
On Monday, while addressing an election rally here at Zilla Parishad Kanya Prashala ground in support of Rana Jagatsinh Patil, NCP candidate from Osmanabad Lok Sabha constituency, Mr Pawar said that if Mahagathbandhan (grand-alliance) comes into the power, total loan of farmers would be waived off without any delay.

“During the UPA tenure we had taken the decision to waive Rs 70,000 crore loan and it was implemented within period of eight days,” he said.

Talking about BJP-led state government loan waiver scheme of Rs 34,000 crore, he alleged that so far, only 10 to 15 percent farmers were benefitted by the scheme.

Mr Pawar further said during the present government farmers are not getting ‘adequate return’ to their farm products, adding that farmers are in severe loss under the rule of present government.

The NCP chief said that Mr Modi is not speaking on the issues of farmers, farmers suicides and unemployment, adding that during the election rallies the PM is only targetting Nehru-Gandhi families and further asked Mr Modi that doesn’t he know both of the families had sacrificed their lives for the country.

Referring to Mr Modi’s statement over Pawar family crises, the NCP supremo said, “we all are okay and he should not worry about our family.”
Mr Pawar also demanded that Mr Modi should clarify on the massive surge in pricing of Rafale jets. “How has the cost gone to Rs 1600 crore from Rs 350 crores in just two years.” he asked.

Mr Pawar also lambasted Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray for forging alliance with BJP and that too just before the elections as Mr Thackeray had been a strong critique of Modi government from past four years.
Before election rally Mr Pawar also visited the family of Vijay Dawale at Kasbe Tadwale who had committed suicide after he was cheated by the bank chairman Vijay Dandnaik and Shiv Sena candidate Om Raje Nimbalkar, whose name he had mentioned in his suicide note.

Navdeep Saini, Khaleel Ahmed and Deepak Chahar have impressed in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019

BCCI Names Four Fast Bowlers To Assist Team India For World Cup Preparation

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday named four fast bowlers to assist Team India in their preparation for World Cup 2019. The list released by the cricket board on their official website includes Navdeep Saini,Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed and Deepak Chahar. The impressive bunch of young pacers Saini, Khaleel and Chahar have displayed their potential for their respective franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019. While Avesh featured in only a solitary match in the ongoing season of the lucrative season.

The 33-year-old Karthik got the nod ahead of the 21-year-old Pant despite an indifferent IPL campaign with the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Hardik Pandya produced a sensational late cameo of 37 not out off just 16 balls as he guided Mumbai Indians to a five-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in an IPL match in Mumbai on Monday. Chasing 172 for a win, the match was in a balance when he came out in the 16th over but Hardik, who was named in India’s World Cup squad on Monday, turned the game on its head, smashing five boundaries and two sixes during his unconquered 16-ball innings on a turning track at the Wankhede Stadium.

Mumbai needed 22 runs from the last two overs but Hardik took just six balls to hit the required runs, smashing left-arm spinner Pawan Negi for two boundaries and as many sixes to end the run chase. He finished the game with a single off the last ball of the 19th over as Mumbai reached 172 for 5 in 19 overs.

This was Mumbai’s fifth win in eight games and they are now at third spot with 10 points, while RCB suffered their seventh defeat in eight matches and the Virat Kohli-led team are languishing at the bottom of the table.

Earlier, veteran Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga took four wickets for 31 runs as Mumbai restricted RCB to 171 for 7. Mumbai were off to a flying start in their run chase with openers Rohit Sharma (28) and Quinton de Kock (40) finding the boundaries with ease.

De Kock took 16 runs from the third over bowled by Umesh Yadav, smashing two boundaries and a six while captain Rohit was elegant as ever, hitting a four and a six off Mohammed Siraj the next over.

Mumbai were wallopping at 67 for no loss at the end of first powerplay overs but suddenly off-spinner Moeen Ali (2/28) brought RCB back into the match with a two-wicket burst in a single over.

The Englishman removed the two set openers Rohit and de Kock in the space of four deliveries in the eighth over. Rohit was done in a by a delivery which turned viciously from the offside while de Kock was plumbed in front as he was beaten by a delivery which skidded instead of turning and Mumbai were 71 for 2 in 7.4 overs.

Ishan Kishan (21) came out and nonchalantly smashed two sixes off Negi before he fell to Yuzvendra Chahal (2/27), stumped by Parthiv Patel.

The Mumbai run chase started stuttering and with the pitch turning, Suryakumar Yadav (29) and Krunal Pandya (11) was finding it difficult to get the boundaries. Play was held up for a few minutes in the 13th over with Chahal seemingly having some problem on his little finger but he returned to bowl his fourth over and had the wicket of Suryakumar who holed out to Navdeep Saini near the boundary.

Hardik was nearly out in the 17th over but it was his elder brother Krunal who was out in the next over off the bowling of Mohammed Siraj. It was then left to Hardik to take Mumbai to victory in a dramatic fashion. Earlier, AB de Villiers and Moeen Ali hit impressive half centuries to guide Royal Challengers Bangalore to a respectable 171 for 7 after being put into bat.

After RCB lost skipper Virat Kohli (8 off 9 balls) and Parthiv Patel (28 off 20 balls) inside seven overs, de Villiers (75 in 51 balls) along with Ali (50 runs in 32 balls) resurrected the innings with a 95-run stand for the third wicket.

The South African star stamped his authority, hammering six fours and four sixes, as he completed his half-century in 41 balls. Ali was a little bit more aggressive than De Villiers as he hit five sixes and a lone boundary as the two took the MI attack to cleaners.

Ali initially played second fiddle but later upped the ante. He was particularly severe on Australian pacer Jason Behrendorff (1/49), whom he hit for two sixes and a four in the 16th over, which fetched 17 runs for RCB. De Villiers, who took time to settle, then showed his class, as he hit round the park.

However, veteran Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga (4/31) pegged the visiting side back by removing Ali and Marcus Stonis (0) in the 18th over and taking two wickets in the final over. De Villiers was run out in the final over off a brilliant throw from long-on.

Jet Airways Crisis: Government To Review Increasing Fares, Flight Cancellations

April 16, 2019 by Nasheman

Suresh Prabhu said he had asked the civil aviation secretary to take necessary steps to protect passenger rights and safety.

Jet Airways Crisis: Government To Review Increasing Fares, Flight Cancellations

Cash-starved Jet Airways is grappling with a debt burden of $1.2 billion

The government said on Tuesday that it had directed the secretary of Ministry of Civil Aviation to review the issues related to Jet Airways. In a tweet on Tuesday morning, Union Minister Suresh Prabhu said that Pradeep Singh Kharola will review the issues ailing the airline, especially increasing fares and flight cancellations. The statement from the government comes at a time the cash-starved carrier is grappling with a debt burden of $1.2 billion, and owes vast sums to lessors, suppliers, pilots and oil companies.

He further said that Mr Kharola had been asked to “take necessary steps to protect passenger rights and safety” and work with the stakeholders for their well-being.Directed Secretary to review issues related to Jet Airways, especially increasing fares, flight cancellations etc. Asked him to take necessary steps to protect passenger rights and safety; and to work with all stakeholders for their well being.

The airline is operating with less than 10 planes, news agency Press Trust of India reported.

Jet Airways has been losing planes in recent weeks as lessors scramble to de-register and take back their aircraft, even as Jet’s lenders have sought expressions of interest in the carrier from potential investors. It has also suspended its international operations for the time being.

Jet has been struggling after failing to receive a stop-gap loan of Rs. 1,500 crore from its lenders as part of a rescue deal agreed in late March.

Lenders, led by the State Bank of India (SBI), want a new investor to buy a stake of up to 75 per cent in Jet and initial expressions of interest were submitted last week.

Shares in Jet Airways dropped as much as 4.43 per cent on Tuesday, underperforming a broader market that scaled new record highs.

Azam Khan, Maneka Gandhi Face Campaign Ban For Poll Code Violation

April 16, 2019 by Nasheman

Earlier today, the Election Commission had handed similar orders to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Mayawati.

[Nasheman news]

NEW DELHI:

After Yogi Adityanath and Mayawati, the Election Commission barred two more senior political leaders for violation of the Model Code of Conduct this evening.  Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has been barred from campaigning for three days starting tomorrow for his “indecent and derogatory” comment against Jaya Prada, the Election Commission order said. Another senior political leader, the BJP’s Union minister Maneka Gandhi, has been barred from campaigning for 48 hours for communal comments, the Commission said.

The Commission’s action came hours after the Supreme Court pulled it up for failing to take action in cases of Model Code violation and questioning if it knew what powers it has to punish errant political leaders.

Maneka Gandhi, the BJP candidate from Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, had asked a gathering of Muslims to vote for her, saying otherwise else she might not be inclined to be responsive to their requests.

In a clip of her speech, the lawmaker from Pilibhit can be heard saying: “If my victory is without Muslims, I won’t feel that good… Then when a Muslim comes to me for work, I think, ‘Let it be, how does it matter’? It’s all give and take, isn’t it? We aren’t all sons of Mahatma Gandhi, are we? (laughs). It’s not that we keep on giving and then losing in the election. This victory will happen with or without you”.

The Commission said the minister  who handles the Women and Child Development portfolio, violated the rules that bar appeal to caste and communal feelings, as well as one that bans “corrupt practices” like bribery and intimidation.

In case of Azam Khan, the Commission said his comments on electoral rival Jaya Prada “may be construed as being repugnant to the hour and dignity of women”. Taking note of a ban on the leader in 2014, the Commission said he has not “changed his way of campaigning and he is indulging in using very objectionable language”.

The three-day ban on Azam Khan will cut down heavily on the Samajwadi leader’s campaign time. Elections in Rampur will be held on April 23 and the campaigning has to end by the evening of April 20. It would leave him only two days to campaign.

Elections for Sultanpur, from where Maneka Gandhi is contesting, will be held on May 12.

Earlier today, the Commission had handed similar orders to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Mayawati.

At a recent meeting in Deoband, Mayawati had warned the Muslim community not to “split votes” between the Congress and her alliance. Appealing to caste or communal feelings to secure votes is a no-no under the model code, which is a series of dos and don’ts for political parties ahead of elections.

Days later, hitting out at Mayawati, Yogi Adityanath said, “If the Congress, the SP and the BSP have faith in Ali, then we too have faith in Bajrang Bali” – a comment that triggered outraged protests from the opposition. While Ali is revered by Muslims as Prophet Mohammad’s successor, Bajrang Bali is another name for Lord Hanuman.1

While neither of them are contesting in the election, Mayawati was expected to address a rally in Agra on Tuesday. Yogi Adityanath, the star campaigner of the BJP after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would miss a couple of rallies in Uttar Pradesh and several outside the state.

“Stop Talking About Pak If You’re Nationalist”: Priyanka Gandhi Attacks BJP

'Stop Talking About Pak If You're Nationalist': Priyanka Gandhi Attacks BJP

[Nasheman news]

LUCKNOW

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, campaigning in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur Sikri today, mounted a two-point attack on the ruling BJP focusing on the narrative around nationalism and the state of potato farmers in the region. “If the government is nationalist then it should respect the fallen soldiers, whether they are Hindus or Muslims. If it is nationalist, it should stop disrespecting freedom fighters who laid the foundation of this country,” Priyanka Gandhi said, sharing the stage with her brother and Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is in charge of Uttar Pradesh along with her.

“If it is nationalist, it should stop talking about Pakistan in the election rallies. Instead, it should tell the youth, women and farmers of India as to what it is going to do about them,” said Priyanka Gandhi, one of the two Congress general secretaries in charge of UP.

She referred to farmers from different parts of the country marching to Delhi and attacked the government for not listening to them.

“If it is nationalist, why didn’t the government meet and listen to the farmers who came barefoot from different parts of India? If it is nationalist, then when people were killed in the name of religion why didn’t it share the grief of the victims, instead of honouring the victims’ murderers? If it is nationalist, why is it afraid of people raising their voice? It feels as if this government is neither proud of democracy nor our institutes nor people of the country. If it is a real nationalist then it would have been on the path of truth. But, it drifted away from it long ago.”

The Congress has fielded Raj Babbar, its UP chief, in Fatehpur Sikri, the town of Sufi saint Salim Chishti, who famously guided Mughal Emperor Akbar in his hour of need. Raj Babbar faces a BJP candidate from the Jat community, Rajkumar Chahar. In this seat, the mahagathbandhan candidate Shreebhagwan Sharma aka Guddu Pandit is seen to be a minor player, making it a BJP vs Congress fight.

Priyanka Gandhi referred to the BJP’s publicity machinery saying it is drowning the truth.

“I have seen the reality in the eyes of youth who complain about jobs, seen it in the eyes of potato growers who come to Raebareli and Lucknow to talk about their loans and the high costs that they have to bear,” she said.

She spoke about a farmer who reportedly sold his produce for Rs. 490 and sent the money to PM Modi as a mark of protest. “He sent this money to the PM to show him the truth of the country and its farmers,” she said.

While talking about the Congress manifesto, she mistakenly said: “There are schemes in the manifesto through which you will get free health (swastha) in government hospitals).”

She smiled and corrected herself. “Swastha nahin… matlab swastha ki jaanch aur swastha ka ilaj muft milega (Not swasth (health)…I mean diagnosis and treatment will be free). It will be great if health can be given for free),” she quipped.1

Fatehpur Sikri will vote in the next round of the national election on Thursday. The results will be announced on May 23.
