Defamation charge framed against journalist Priya Ramani

April 10, 2019 by Nasheman

A Delhi court today framed defamation charge against journalist Priya Ramani in a case filed by ex-Union minister M J Akbar after she leveled allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

Court listed the matter for hearing on May 4

Ramani, who appeared before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal, however, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial.

Akbar has since denied the charges leveled by Ramani.

The court listed the matter for hearing on May 4 and also granted a permanent exemption to Ramani from personal appearance.

Cong slams Modi after SC order, says Rafale skeletons tumbling out

April 10, 2019 by Nasheman

New Delhi, Apr 10 : Welcoming the Supreme Court ruling that dismissed the Centre’s objection to consider the Defence documents, which were published in the media, as evidence in the controversial Rafale fighter jet deal, Congress on Wednesday slammed Narendra Modi government, saying ?the skeletons in Rafale Scam are tumbling out one by one?.

In a series of tweets, AICC communication in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said that Mr Modi cannot hide behind the ‘official secrets act’.

Modiji, you can run and lie as much as you want, But sooner or later the truth comes out. The skeletons in Rafale Scam are tumbling out one by one. And now there is ‘no official secrets act’ to hide behind?, he tweeted.

In another tweet, Mr Surjewala said that the Supreme Court has upheld a time honoured legal principle.

A rattled Modiji had threatened to invoke Official Secrets Act against independent Journalists for exposing his corruption on Rafale? he tweeted and added, ?don’t worry Modiji, an investigation is going to take place now, whether you like it or not?.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed Centre’s objection, citing Official Secret Act, to consider the review petition on the basis of published documents in media.

In a unanimous verdict, the apex court led by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said, We deem it proper to dismiss the preliminary objections to hold and affirm that the review petitions will be adjudicated on their merits on the basis of the relevance of the three documents whose admissibility was questioned by the government?.

April 10, 2019 by Nasheman

Kolkata, Apr 09 : Adjectives like strength, vigour, courage have always been the attributes to describe men, and the women have been the soft, kind and poised ones. Pak PM Imran Khan endorses PM Modi for second term, says ‘BJP’s win will boost chances of India-Pak talks’

April 10, 2019 by Nasheman

Ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections, PM Narendra Modi received support from none other than Imran Khan, the PM of Pakistan. Khan had said that both the countries will have a better chance of settling the Kashmir dispute if Modi-led BJP government comes to power.

The cricketer-turned-politician further said that if the Congress comes to power at the Centre then it might not start a dialogue with Pakistan on Kashmir as it will be scared of the opposition.

“Perhaps if the BJP – a right-wing party – wins, some kind of settlement in Kashmir could be reached,” Khan was quoted by Reuters as saying.

Khan further said that he seeks a meaningful dialogue on Kashmir issue with the BJP if it comes to power despite the fact that Muslims were facing continuous attack under Modi rule.

Muslim-ness is under attack, said Khan and added that he had never expected to witness something like this. Citing his Indian Muslim friends he said they were happy about their situation in India but they are now worried due to the rise of extreme Hindu Nationalism.

Drawing a parallel between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Modi he said that their campaign and rallies were based on “fear and nationalist feeling”.

Speaking on the BJP manifesto which talked about removing Article 370 and 35A from Jammu and Kashmir Khan called it a major concern but said that it might be a poll stunt.

After the interview was out, former J&K CM Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti took a jibe at the Modi government.

On terrorism, the Pakistani PM said that his country is fully committed to dismantling all terror networks and militias in the country with the full support of the military establishment and added that this will also apply to groups involved in Kashmir.

Terming Kashmir a “political struggle” Khan said that this dispute cannot be resolved through military solutions.  He further accepted that Kashmiris are the ones who suffer the most if terrorists from Pakistan enter the Valley leading to crackdown by the Indian Army.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars over Kashmir after gaining independence from Britain in 1947 and bilateral ties between the nuclear-armed neighbours reached a boiling point in February this year after 40 CRPF jawans were killed in suicide bombing in Kashmir’s Pulwama.

While Islamabad denied its role in the ghastly February 14 attack, Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility for the same. The bombing led to IAF airstrikes in Pakistan’s Balakot and the Indian government claimed that over 300 terrorists died in the airstrikes.

Later, Pakistan carried out air strikes on Army HQ in J&K but no casualties were reported.

The airstrikes gave a big boost to PM Modi’s re-election bid.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi claimed that they had reliable intelligence indicating that India will launch another attack on Pakistan this month, a claim categorically rejected by the MEA.

India’s great game of democracy will start on April 11 and the polls will be held in phases with results on May 23.

Rafale review pleas: ‘Stolen’ documents ‘admissible in the court’, says SC

April 10, 2019 by Nasheman

In a setback for the government, the Supreme Court, on Wednesday, ruled that the ‘stolen’ documents were ‘admissible in the court’. A Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, dismissed Centre’s preliminary objections seeking review of earlier judgment giving a clean chit to the Union Government in Rafale deal. The bench also includes Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and KM Joseph.

The court allowed the admissibility of three documents in Rafale deal as evidence in re-examining the review petitions filed against the SC’s December 14 judgement in which it refused to order probe in procuring 36 Rafale fighter jets from France.  “As far as the question of hearing of review plea on Rafale judgement is concerned, it will give a detailed hearing later on,” SC said.

“Our argument was that because the documents relate to Defence you must examine them. You asked for this evidence and we have provided it. So the Court has accepted our pleas and rejected the arguments of the government,” Arun Shourie, who filed review plea in Rafale deal verdict was quoted as saying by news agency.

The verdict pertains to the initial objections raised by the central government that the documents that claimed ‘privileged’ could not be authenticated to reassess the ruling on the Rafale jet deal with France.

On December 14 last year, SC had rejected the petitions by former Union ministers Yashwant Sinha and Arun Shourie as also activist advocate Prashant Bhushan seeking a court-monitored probe into the Rafale acquisition process.

The Supreme Court had on March 14 heard the pleas to review the December 14 Rafale order and Attorney General KK Venugopal argued that the court should remove leaked pages from the petitions as the government claims privilege over the documents. The court, however, said that the petitioners had already submitted the documents.

The Centre, in an affidavit, had told the apex court that the review petitions were based on documents stolen from the Defence Ministry.

The matter comes on the backdrop that the Congress-led opposition has made Rafale an election issue and targetted the government over the offset contracts awarded to the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Defence by Dassault – the manufacturer of Rafale.

In its December 14 verdict, the apex court had dismissed the petitions and said that there was no reason to ‘really doubt the decision-making process’.

In 2016, India and France had inked an inter-governmental agreement (IGA) to purchase 36 Rafale fighters from French Dassault. The announcement, made by PM Modi during his France visit, overruled the then existing process to purchase 126 Rafale jets from France — 18 in flyaway condition and 108 to be made in India with the transfer of technology.
