Two Income Tax officials arrested in Bengaluru in alleged Rs 14 lakh bribery case

April 5, 2019 by Nasheman

The I-T officers were arrested in Koramangala in the city’s upscale southwest suburb on a complaint from a private firm’s Managing Director.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two Income Tax (I-T) officials in an alleged Rs 14 lakh bribery case and recovered Rs 1.65 crore in cash from them, the premier probe agency said on Thursday.

“The I-T officers were arrested in Koramangala in the city’s upscale southwest suburb on a complaint from a private firm’s Managing Director after a case was registered against them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Corruption Act,” said a CBI statement.

The agency, however, did not disclose the names of the accused tax officials, the Managing Director or his company.

“When we received the complaint that the accused demanded Rs 14 lakh as bribe for favourably settling an issue pertaining to an I-T survey conducted at the office of the complainant on March 6, we laid a trap to nab the accused by asking them to deliver the amount in cash on Wednesday (April 3) at their office,” said the statement.

“One of the officials was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe from the complainant,” said the statement.

In the ensuing search, many incriminating documents were found from the premises of the accused.

“Besides Rs 1.65 crore in cash, we recovered $1,450 in foreign currency from the locker of the accused besides incriminating documents pertaining to the case, mobile phones and pen drives,” added the statement.

The accused were produced before the competent court in the city for remand and interrogation.

Development is the keyword, not Sandalwood: Nikhil Kumaraswamy

April 5, 2019 by Nasheman

MYSURU: Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil, who is contesting from Mandya against Sumalatha Ambareesh, on Thursday discounted the influence of star-power on elections and said that only a purely development-driven agenda would decide who gets elected.

The fight for Mandya is shaping up to become one of the hottest fights this election with Sumalatha roping in film stars like Yash and Darshan to campaign for her. However, Nikhil, an actor himself, has chosen to give film stars a miss. Speaking to The media, Nikhil said he was banking on the family’s long connect with Mandya and the promise of development if he is elected.

“People gathering to see film stars will not translate into votes. Sumalatha has not deterred me. Karnataka has not had cinema stars becoming successful politicians, while Rajkumar had the qualities, he was not interested. The furore created by film stars campaigning for Sumalatha is created by the media as they have never been in favour of JD(S),” he said.

Nikhil also lashed out at the BJP and accused them of resorting to tactics like income-tax raids to derail his campaign. On comments made about Sumalatha by his own party members, he said that he did not support them. “I am against personal attacks against anyone including Sumalatha. I want polls to be held in a dignified manner,” he said.

Nikhil said that he was aware of a feeling of anti-incumbency against some JD(S) legislators, leading him to bypass them and approach the people directly. On Congress leaders supporting Sumalatha, Nikhil said that loyal Congressmen were not part of this group.

In all the drama surrounding the fight for Mandya, Nikhil said he was hurt by the rift between him and Abhishek Ambareesh. The duo, once friends, have been having some difficulty marred by personal attacks, which Nikhil feels could be permanent.

Income tax sleuths raided the residence of Congress leader M S Atmananda in Mandya on Wednesday. The officials questioned the Congress leader and his family members about the source of their income. Sources said Rs 10 lakh cash and documents were seized. Atmananda has been given the responsibility to work on Nikhil’s campaign. So, as news about the raid spread, Atmananda’s supporters protested outside his house condemning the raid. Meanwhile, IT officials also carried out a search at a private hotel were JD(S) candidate Nikhil Kumaraswamy was staying. The officers visited the hotel and also searched other rooms were his supporters were staying.  The team of 25 officers conducted the raid. Sources said that the authorities went empty hand as Nikhil was campaigning in Pandavapura taluk.

EC Officials Checked CM Vehicle 13 Times in 20 days

April 5, 2019 by Nasheman

Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Thursday expressed displeasure over the repeated checking which takes place under the model code of conduct.

KARWAR: Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Thursday expressed displeasure over repeated checking of his vehicle at check-posts. In the last 20 days after the model code of conduct came into effect, his vehicle was subjected to numerous checking at various places acrosss the state.

On Thursday, his vehicle was checked twice between Gokarna and Karwar while he was heading to Karwar city to attend the nomination filing of JD(S) candidate Anand Asnotikar. When asked about frequent checking, Kumaraswamy said the officials have cited an order from the Election Commission as reason for the same.

“On Thursday, after I left having my breakfast, my vehicle was checked twice. What are they trying to prove?” he asked. “We are in the middle of the model code of conduct and we are seeing regular transfers,” he noted.

On Wednesday, photos of the CM’s vehicle being checked at a check-post in Hassan district had gone viral.

He expressed anguish over the IT Department for conducting raids allegedly targeting JD(S) and Congress. “It’s low-level politics by the BJP, which is using IT officials to threaten the JD(S) in this election by conducting raids,” he said.
