WATCH | 8-foot-long crocodile caught from roadside drain in Maharashtra

July 31, 2019 by Nasheman

The crocodile is suspected to have entered the town’s drainage system which was flooded due to the water overflow from the nearby river.

RATNAGIRI: An eight-foot-long crocodile was rescued from a roadside drain in the tourist resort of Chiplun in Maharashtra’s coastal Ratnagiri district, officials said on Tuesday.

A video of the reptile emerging out of the drain has gone viral on the internet. The incident occurred in Chiplun’s Dadar area, leading to confusion about whether it happened in suburban Mumbai.

Forest officials said that the incident occurred last Friday (July 26) when Ratnagiri was lashed by heavy rain leading to floods in the Vashishti River, which originates in the coastal district.

The crocodile is suspected to have entered the town’s drainage system which was flooded due to the water overflow from the nearby river. Locals alerted the fire brigade and the Forest Department after they heard some strange sounds emanating from the drain as the huge reptile struggled to escape.

“This is quite common in this region during the monsoon. We rescued this crocodile safely. Since it had not suffered any injuries, it was released back into the river,” Divisional Forest Officer V. K. Surve said.

“I have been barged with calls… I have said it’s the Dadar area of Chiplun and not the Dadar of Mumbai,” Surve said with a laugh.

He said that apart from this incident, the Divisional Forest Office handles calls to rescue other reptiles like snakes, and last month it rescued a leopard trapped during a torrential downpour.

With a population of around 55,000, Chiplun town, 325 kms south of Mumbai is a popular tourist resort and famed for its Alphonso mangoes and kokam, the Sawatsada Waterfalls, the Parshuram Temple and other temples, plus a Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum.

NEW DELHI: Rajiv Kumar, Secretary in the Department of Financial Services, was on Tuesday named the new Finance Secretary to take the place of Subhash Chandra Garg, who was shunted to the Power Ministry.

Garg sought voluntary retirement from government service earlier this week after he was transferred to the Ministry of Power in a bureaucratic reshuffle.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved designating Shri Rajiv Kumar, lAS (JH:1984), Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance as Finance Secretary,” read a statement issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

Earlier this week, the government had reshuffled top bureaucrats across 12 ministries, departments and agencies.

The rejig came less than three weeks after the Union Budget was presented in the Lok Sabha and a day after it was passed by Parliament.

Garg, who formerly served as the Finance Secretary, was on Tuesday moved to the Ministry of Power, a day after which Atanu Chakraborty, a 1985-batch Gujarat-cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, was named Garg’s replacement.

Increase in India’s tiger population ‘good sign’: Guterres’ spokesperson

July 31, 2019 by Nasheman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the All India Tiger Estimation Report 2018 on 29 July and said the country had emerged as of one of the biggest and safest habitats for tigers in the world.

UNITED NATIONS: India’s tiger population, which has more than doubled from 1,411 in 2006 to 2,967 in 2019, is a “good sign” as it meets UN’s sustainable development goal which encourages the preservation of all species, particularly those that are endangered, a spokesperson for UN chief Antonio Guterres has said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday released the All India Tiger Estimation Report 2018 and said the country had emerged as of one of the biggest and safest habitats for tigers in the world.

The tiger population in India has grown from 1,411 in 2006 to 2,967 in 2019, according to the report.

“With around 3,000 tigers, India has emerged as of one of the biggest and safest habitats for them in world,” Modi said as he lauded all the stakeholders involved in the country’s tiger conservation exercise.

“We have a Sustainable Development Goal which encourages the preservation of biodiversity and of all species including, in particularly, those that are endangered. So, it’s always a good sign if endangered species are, in fact, being protected,” Secretary-General Guterres’ Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said at a press briefing here on Tuesday when asked to comment about the increase in tiger population in India.

Of the 17 UN sustainable development goals, 15 deal with “Life on Land” and are focussed on protecting, restoring and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably managing forests, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation and halting biodiversity loss.

Among the main targets of the 15 goals is to “take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species”.

It also stresses on the need for urgent action to end poaching and trafficking of protected species of flora and fauna and address both demand and supply of illegal wildlife products.

According to the report, while the number of tigers have increased nationwide, there was a decline in its population in Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.

The report was prepared by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII).

The report covered 3,81,400 sq kms of forests which were surveyed for tiger signs and prey estimation.

Nearly 27,000 camera traps were set up at 141 locations covering an area of 121,337 sq km and taking nearly 3.48 crore photographs.

Out of the total pictures, nearly 77,000 were of tigers.

Air India Express makes profit, revenue up by 16 per cent

July 31, 2019 by Nasheman

The impact of this on profitability was huge, as more than 40 % of the Airline’s operating cost were incurred on fuel.

Air India

NEW DELHI: Air India Express, the low-cost arm of Air India, has earned a net profit of Rs169 crore in FY 2018-19. The net profit earned in the last fiscal is particularly significant as the aviation sector has had to face high input costs.

The impact of this on profitability was huge, as more than 40  per cent of the Airline’s operating cost was incurred on fuel. “Despite this we were able to drive-in profit by greater utilisation of our assets and resources, like aircraft, manpower and materials. Through concerted cost measures, the airline was able to contain the unit cost incurred on expenses other than fuel to be at the same level as in FY 18,” said K. Shyam Sundar, CEO, Air India Express.

The airline’s revenues grew by 16.07 per cent, going up from Rs 3,620 crore in FY 2017-18 to Rs 4,202 crore in FY 2018-19.

The number of passengers carried by the Airline increased by 12 per cent, to reach 4.36 million from the 3.89 million passengers carried in 2017-18. The Airline’s international carriage alone grew by about 10.5 per cent during this period.

Air India Express also inducted two more aircraft, to its fleet in September and October 2018. With the induction of these two aircraft, Air India Express expanded its network to three new Indian cities — Bengaluru, Kannur and Surat.

NEW DELHI: Lieutenant Colonel MS Dhoni has begun his latest innings. The former India captain joined his Territorial Army (TA) unit in Srinagar on Wednesday. Dhoni had opted out of the West Indies tour to complete his stint.

“Dhoni’s 15-day duty period (till August 15) with his unit 106 TA Battalion (Para) begins today,” an army officer said. .

It was in 2011 that Dhoni had been made a honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army. He was assigned to the 106 TA unit, which happens to be a para battalion in which every combatant is trained to jump from air using parachute and operate on ground.

Dhoni had already earned his wings by completing the mandatory five para training jumps in 2015 at Agra.

It was the former India captain who had requested the Army Chief for permission to be with the troops in actual duty.

“As requested by the officer and approved by Army Headquarters, he will be taking on the duties of patrolling, guard and post duty and will be staying with troops,” Army sources said.

The unit is in Kashmir Valley as part of Victor Force. It is deployed in counter-terrorism activities and does ‘static duties’ like guard and sentry, and taking care of road opening and installation security of the important Badami Bagh Cantonment.

When it comes to active operations, Dhoni, however, will not be allowed as he has not been trained for this.

“Dhoni will be with the unit for seven days during which he will be carrying out his assigned duties. During the deployment he will be like any other officer and he will be given his own personal weapon (AK-47) with three loaded magazines,” the sources said.

He will also be visiting other military formations and going to four Army Goodwill schools to meet the students there. He will also get introduced to five local cricket teams and will play matches with them.

Dhoni is only the second cricketer after Kapil Dev to wear the uniform.

The other known faces who had been with the Territorial Army are politicians Sachin Pilot and Anurag Thakur, shooter Abhinav Bindra and South Indian superstar Mohan Lal. Former cabinet minister KP Singh Deo was also part of the Territorial Army.

Presently the Territorial Army (TA), the troops of which are also addressed as ‘Terriers’, has a strength of approximately 40000 comprising of Departmental TA units such as Railway, IOC, ONGC, and Non-departmental TA units of Infantry Battalion including Home and Hearth Battalions, Ecological Battalion (TA) affiliated to various Infantry Regiments and Engineer Regiment (TA) for maintenance of Line of Control Fencing.

The TA units were actively involved in the 1962, 1965 and 1971 wars. The ‘Terriers’ have also taken part in Operation Pawan in Srilanka, Operation Rakshak in Punjab and J&K, Operation Rhino and Operation Bajrang in the North East in a most active manner.

VG Siddhartha missing: BJP writes to Shah, Congress seeks probe

July 31, 2019 by Nasheman

The BJP has sought the Union government’s assistance to trace the missing businessman.

BENGALURU: Politicians cutting across party lines made a beeline at former external affairs minister SM Krishna’s residence as news of his son-in-law Siddhartha missing near Mangaluru broke on Tuesday morning. From Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to Krishna’s protege DK Shivakumar and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, political bigwigs met the octogenarian political veteran to show solidarity.

Former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy was one of the first to visit Krishna’s residence in Sadashivanagar. Given his long career with the Congress before joining the BJP, a host of Congress leaders stood by Krishna’s family on Tuesday even as efforts to find Siddhartha were underway. A team of recently disqualified MLAs, including S T Somashekhar, Shivaram Hebbar and M T B Nagaraj, too visited Krishna’s residence to show support.

A delegation of BJP MPs led by Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Shobha Karandlaje submitted a petition to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. “A gentleman, who popularised coffee across the world, known for his business acumen. It is unfortunate that man who has given jobs to thousands of Kannadigas goes missing,” a statement from Karandlaje said. The BJP has sought the Union government’s assistance to trace the missing businessman.

Congress leaders, especially Shivakumar whose proximity to Krishna as well as Siddhartha is not a secret, insisted on a thorough investigation, deeming the incident “fishy”.   “I received a call from him on the July 28 asking if we could meet. It’s unbelievable that a courageous man like him would resort to this. However, I find this utterly fishy and urge that a thorough investigation be conducted. Shri Siddhartha and his family are closely known to me for decades now. (SIC)” Shivakumar tweeted.

The long list of political bigwigs who visited Krishna included former state Home Minister M B Patil, former DyCM G Parameshwara, former Speaker K R  Ramesh Kumar, former minister Krishna Byregowda and KJ George, former CM Jagadish Shettar, BJP’s Suresh Kumar and Kumar Bangarappa.

Kamaraj Road stretch to be barricaded with steel for I-Day security

July 31, 2019 by Nasheman

Speaking to The New Indian Express, a top traffic cop said that police were keen on three specific spots being completely barricaded with strong structures by BMRCL.

BENGALURU: As part of enhancement of security and safety measures in and around Parade Grounds on account of thousands of visitors expected to visit the Parade Grounds for Independence Day celebrations, the traffic police have directed the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to immediately put in place steel barricades. Metro had sealed off a portion of the Kamaraj Road since June 15 in connection with works related to an interchange underground Metro station of Phase-II here. The 200-metre stretch between MG Road and Cubbon Road will remain closed for at least 35 more months. The interchange station forms part of the Gottigere-Nagavara Metro Line.

Speaking to The New Indian Express, a top traffic cop said that police were keen on three specific spots being completely barricaded with strong structures by BMRCL. “Pedestrians are permitted to walk along the 200-metre stretch, which has been barricaded presently.

One side of the footpath is being protected with a compound wall, but on the other side gunny bags have been kept and even light barricading using cloth-like structures has been done. We expect at least 7,000 visitors, including over 3,000 school children to visit the Grounds to take part or watch celebrations on August 15,” said the top cop. Traffic police are insisting the BMRCL to put up steel barricades for their safety until the Independence Day, he said.

“It is aimed at preventing any stampede from taking place. Also, we do not want any child to slip from the footpath and fall where Metro construction work is being carried on. We will be glad if they continue with it even later in the interests of public safety,” he added.

Speaking about the other two segments which cops want secured are a blockage of the view of the podium from the spot where Metro work is going on. “We call it as View Cutting and this is done as part of VIP security measures,” he said. “Gate No. 4 leading to the Parade Grounds also needs to be sealed with barricades,” the cop added.A top BMRCL official confirmed the orders given to it by the traffic wing of the Cubbon Park station, and said it would begin barricading work at the earliest.

Metro services on Purple Line to be disrupted
Metro train services between Baiyappanahalli and MG Road Metro stations on the Purple Line (Baiyappanahalli-Mysore Road) will not be available from 9.30 pm on August 3 till 11 am on August 4 due to regular maintenance work. Train services will continue to run as usual in the stretch between M G Road and Mysore Road stations (5 am to 11 pm) and well as the Green Line.

One entry of RV Road Metro station to be closed
The South West entry of the R V Road Metro station connecting the concourse area of the station to the platform will be closed from Thursday (August 1), due to some modification works being taken up at the station. The north west entry at the station, will continue to remain open for commuters who want to travel from R V Road to Nagasandra Metro station.

BJP-led state govt cancels celebrations citing law and order; Cong, JDS leaders slam decision, call BJP anti-minority

BJP workers, led by R Ashok, stage a protest at Mysuru Bank Circle against Tipu Jayanti celebrations on Friday

BENGALURU: Tipu Sultan died 220 years ago. But a decision on whether to celebrate his birthday officially or not triggers war of words between politicians in the state almost every year. And this year is no different. On Tuesday, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa cancelled the Tipu Jayanti celebrations after the cabinet meeting raised apprehensions over maintaining law and order. The trigger behind the cancellation was Virajpet BJP MLA KG Bhopaiah recalling that Tippu Jayanti celebrations had led to unrest and destruction of property in the past. He requested that it be cancelled.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who had started Tipu Jayanti celebrations in the state, reacted sharply to the BJP government’s decision. “BJP is anti-minority and this decision is short-sighted. History books tell us that Tipu Sultan was a freedom fighter who challenged the British and gave up his life fighting,” he said.

Congress MLC CM Ibrahim said, “I feel the pain. We will not fight the BJP government’s decision, but we will tell people about it. If BJP has anything against Tipu, then how come BJP leaders Yediyurappa and Jagadish Shettar participated in Tipu birthday celebrations earlier. They even wore a Tipu headgear.” He further added: “BJP did not spare Mahatma Gandhi, how will they spare Tipu Sultan?’’

JDS spokesman Tanvir Ahmed said, “BJP has forgotten about development. It is only interested in hate-mongering and polarising the people.’’ “If the government does not celebrate, we will celebrate Tipu Sultan’s birthday in a grand manner,” added Congress leader Zameer Ahmed.

When contacted, History professor Prithvi Datta C S called for sanity on this issue. “Tipu Sultan was from Mysore, and he was blamed and detested for unleashing attacks against Coorg and Mangalore, which was in their understanding, separate nations. Tipu was attacking another nation, and use of force was obvious. We need to understand history in the right perspective. Both celebration and cancellation are for political purposes.’’

Tipu Jayanti celebrations in the state had started in 2016 under the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah.   While many BJP leaders consider him a tyrant and ‘anti-Hindu,’ Congress and JDS leaders claim that the Mysore ruler was a freedom fighter who fought war against the British. A few years ago, protests against Tipu Jayanti celebrations in Coorg had claimed two persons. Such protests have been common in Virajpet, Madikeri and Dakshina Kannada areas.

Tipu Sultan was from Mysore, and he was blamed and detested for unleashing attacks against Coorg and Mangalore, which was in their understanding, separate nations. Tipu was attacking another nation, and use of force was obvious. We need to understand history in the right perspective. Both celebration and cancellation are for political purposes.
