World Cup should have been shared: Cheteshwar Pujara

July 16, 2019 by Nasheman

A lot of talk post the summit clash has been on how ICC should do away with such a draconian rule. And Pujara also chipped in with his two cents on the matter.

NEW DELHI:  It was a bit unfair on New Zealand. I felt there were no losers in the final and both teams should have shared the trophy.” That’s how India’s Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara summed up the World Cup final held at Lord’s on Sunday. In a thrilling encounter which went to a Super Over, England were crowned winners on boundary count.

A lot of talk post the summit clash has been on how ICC should do away with such a draconian rule. And Pujara also chipped in with his two cents on the matter. “It is up to the ICC to come up with ideas and then decide. It has never happened in a World Cup final before and hence the difficulty for people to understand the rule. Even I was not sure of the rule. But ultimately it was a great game of cricket and I’m sure this game will be remembered for a long time to come,” he said on the sidelines of a sports conclave organised by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) here on Monday.

India’s focus will now shift from 50-over cricket to the Test format as the inaugural ICC World Test Championships will officially launch with the Ashes series between England and Australia while India’s journey will begin with a two-Test series against West Indies starting August 20.

“The World Test Championships will increase the focus on Tests. Each and every Test and series will be important, especially those played away from home. Earlier, teams used to take the third Test lightly after winning the series 2-0 but you can’t afford to do that now with points on offer for every game.”

India’s long international season culminated with the Men in Blue making the World Cup semifinals. There is a high chance that skipper Virat Kohli and premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah might be given a rest for the upcoming West Indies tour. And Pujara feels that both deserve a break.

“Kohli and Bumrah are part of all formats, playing constant cricket, so they need rest. I’m not sure if they will be part of Test squad but from what I heard, they might not be there for ODIs and T20s. Either way, we have good young players and it will be a good opportunity for them to perform and show their talent.”
Pujara admits that facing Bumrah in the nets is as difficult a prospect as playing him out in the middle. “Bumrah is a challenging bowler to face even in practice. I remember in Australia, he was bowling really quick and it was tough to face him even on the practice wickets.”

Regarding his own preparations, the 31-year-old said, “I have already started my preparations for West Indies. I’ve been playing some league games in Chennai. We will play a practice game as well once we land in West Indies. That will be another good way to prepare. I have also been training back home, trying to simulate fast and bouncy conditions in Rajkot, as we might encounter them during the Test series.”

Shaw yet to recover from hip niggle, doubtful for WI
Young India opener Prithvi Shaw said he was not sure when he would recover from his hip injury, which he had suffered during the Mumbai T20 League. That has put a question mark over his participation in the away Test series against West Indies.

Three people killed in two separate hit-and-run cases in Bengaluru

July 16, 2019 by Nasheman

The police said that the accident  occurred at 3.30am as Raju was coming to Nelamangala. Meanwhile, a speeding truck heading to Kunigal, collided with his cab.

BENGALURU: In a case of hit-and-run, a 23-year-old cab driver was killed when a speeding container truck collided with his cab in Makali near Nelamangala early on Monday.

Passersby chased the truck, but the driver escaped, the police said. The deceased is Kiran Raju, a resident of Kanva Nagar in Nelamangala. He had recently joined a private cab service provider.

The police said that the accident occurred at 3.30am as Raju was coming to Nelamangala. Meanwhile, a speeding truck heading to Kunigal, collided with his cab.

The impact crushed Raju’s body between the steering wheel and seat.

His body was taken out half an hour later. No CCTV footage was found of the spot and efforts are on to nab the driver based on a statement by an eye witness, the police said.

In the second incident, a 35-year-old man and his female friend were killed on the spot after a speeding cab rammed into their bike on the busy Nelamangala Highway on Sunday night.

The driver fled leaving the cab behind. The deceased is Venkatesh, a resident of T Dasarahalli and his friend Mangala Sukanya, of Nandini Layout. Both were working for a private company in the city.

The police said that the accident occurred at 9.30pm as the duo were returning to the city after having dinner at an eatery.

Venkatesh was waiting at a junction for the traffic signal to change.

As he waited, the cab, which was travelling at breakneck speed, collided with their bike from behind tossing them in the air.

Passersby rushed them to a nearby private hospital where they were declared brought dead.

Karnataka government turns to treated lake water to meet Bengaluru’s needs

July 16, 2019 by Nasheman

70 per cent of the city’s water comes from from the Cauvery River and the remaining 30 per cent from Kabini Dam.

BBMP Commissioner Manjunatha Prasad said that there was no sewage in the 93 lakes under the BBMP and the water could be processed and used.

BENGALURU: With monsoon playing truant and a severe water crisis plaguing residents of the city, the state government has decided to use treated water from the city’s lakes to meet local needs.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) and Minor Irrigation Department (MID) officials are encouraging the use of treated water in Bengaluru and other districts. They are also working on a policy decision on the same.

They came to this decision after RDPR minister Krishna Byre Gowda recently tweeted: “Close to 100 lakes in Bengaluru urban, Bengaluru rural and Chikkaballapur district will be filled.

“Good example of recycling and reusing water. Government of India has recommended to all states in June to follow Karnataka model of reusing water. Four years of efforts by Government and Rs 1,000 crore investment behind this water flowing into our lakes.”

This idea also gains significance after Deputy Chief Minister Dr G Parameshwara had recently said that if the water level in KRS reservoir does not rise and there was no rain in the catchment areas, then Bengaluru will suffer a severe water crisis.

He said this because 70 per cent of the city’s water comes from from the Cauvery River and the remaining 30 per cent from Kabini Dam.

BBMP Commissioner Manjunatha Prasad said that there was no sewage in the 93 lakes under the BBMP and the water could be processed and used to meet citizens’ needs.

Also, work on treating water in the diverted sewage lines was underway.

Apart from this, the Minor Irrigation Department has also been sending treated sewage water downstream to lakes in Kolar and Chikkaballapura.

“The minister is referring to this project also. The MID is working on more such projects to meet the needs of people downstream, instead of letting all untreated water flow into the Dakshni Pinakini river,” an MID official said.

RDPR Principal Secretary L K Ateeq said that the idea was the 100 per cent treatment of sewage water by 2020. The construction of sewage treatment plants by the BWSSB is underway.

Earlier wastewater used to flow into the valleys, but now it is being treated, pumped and supplied to dried-up lakes.

Meanwhile, the BWSSB has also been asked to plug leakages. Only 30 per cent of the problem has been addressed so far.

‘Karnataka Speaker must accept our resignations’, Rebel MLAs tell Supreme Court

July 16, 2019 by Nasheman

The top court had on Friday restrained the state Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar from taking any decision till July 16 on the resignation and disqualification of the rebel MLAs.

Karnataka Speaker Ramesh Kumar

NEW DELHI: Ten rebel MLAs of the ruling Congress-JD(S) coalition Tuesday said in the Supreme Court that their resignations “have to be accepted” as there is no other way to deal with the present political crisis and contended that the Speaker has to see only if the resignation is voluntary or not.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi is first dealing with the case of 10 lawmakers who approached the court first.

Starting the argument, Senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi representing 10 MLAs told the apex court that there were instances wherein Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar accepted resignation first and then considered disqualification and cited the case of Umesh Jadhav.

“I am only submitting accept my resignation and then decide on disqualification but speaker by this way is infringing upon my right,” the lawyer said.

On CJIs query on what ground disqualification process was initiated against the MLAs, Rohtagi said, “because they were not acting like displined soldiers of the party and were not attending party meetings.”

“If I (MLA)  resign, I can join another party and become a minister tomorrow but if disqualified, I have to wait for by-election,” the lawyer added.

When CJI asked Rohtagi as to how the Assembly Speaker decides on resignation or disqualification petition, the senior advocate cited Article 190 by which if the MLA submits his resignation to the Speaker at his own wish, the speaker cannot force him against his wish.

“We can’t say how the Speaker should decide resignation or that disqualification of MLAs. We can’t fetter him. The question is whether the Speaker has any obligation to decide resignation before the disqualification, ” CJI Gogoi told Rohatgi.

Rohtagi replied to the apex bench by saying that there could be a million reasons to resign but it was the Speaker’s thinking that resignation was meant to favour other party.

“The fallacy of their argument is that it is based on my motive to resign which is completely irrelevant,” he said.

“Speaker says the reason for resignation is to avoid disqualification but that doesn’t mean that he can keep it pending,” he added further.

Rohatgi told the court that the 10 MLAs resigned on July 6 and disqualification proceedings against two lawmakers were pending.

“When was the disqualification proceedings filed against rest eight MLAs,” the top court asked, to which Rohatgi responded that disqualification proceedings started against them on July 10.

The 10 rebel MLAs moved the apex court alleging that the Speaker was not accepting their resignations.

They are: Pratap Gouda Patil, Ramesh Jarkiholi, Byrati Basavaraj, B C Patil, S T Somashekhar, Arbail Shivaram Hebbar, Mahesh Kumathalli, K Gopalaiah, A H Vishwanath and Narayana Gowda.

Disqualification proceeding is mini-trial under the Constitution’s 10th Schedule, Rohatgi said, adding that resignation is different and its acceptance is based on single criterion — it is voluntary or not.

There is nothing to show the rebel MLAs conspired with BJP, the senior advocate said.

The apex court, which was dealing with the plea of 10 rebel MLAs on July 12, will now be hearing five more lawmakers who have sought identical relief that Karnataka Assembly Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar accepts their resignations as well.

The five MLAs — Anand Singh, K Sudhakar, N Nagaraj, Munirathna and Roshan Baig — mentioned their application before a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Deepak Gupta Monday seeking an impleadment as parties to the pending plea on which it was ordered that the speaker would not take any decision till Tuesday on the resignations and disqualifications.

The top court had on Friday restrained the Speaker from taking any decision till July 16 on the resignation and disqualification of the rebel MLAs.

The top court had said an incidental question that would arise in the matter is the kind and extent of the directions that should be issued by a constitutional court to another constitutional functionary, which in the present case happens to be the Speaker of the Assembly.

Music: Ajay – Atul

Overpopulation is one of the biggest ills plaguing the country. The number of people in this country vis à vis the education institutes available are fairly disproportionate. As a result, lakhs of students every year have to struggle & study hard in order to get a few 1000 seats in elite educational institutes. The problem gets compounded when students belong to low income groups & hence, their access to fine tutoring at affordable prices is even lesser. Anand Kumar from Bihar came as a Godsend for many such aspirants. He gave free coaching to students & guaranteed them a seat in IIT. This feat made him a household name & now Hrithik Roshan reprises this role in Super 30. The film has faced lots of obstacles & also few delays.

The scripted scenario of Super 30 reveals that it is the story of a selfless man fighting for the cause of education for all. The year is 1996. Anand Kumar (Hrithik Roshan) has completed his graduation & is passionate about mathematics. He’s so good in the subject that he is felicitated at the hands of the education minister (Pankaj Tripathi). Anand manages to solve a complex mathematical problem, which has baffled scholars all around the world. His feat lands him a seat in the prestigious Cambridge University. His father Eshwar Kumar (Virendra Saxena) is a postman who takes out his Provident Fund to fund Anand’s foreign education. When the money falls short, he & Anand knock at the doors of the education minister, who had promised him help. But the minister refuses to help. Meanwhile, Eshwar passes away one day suddenly. He was the only earning member of the family & hence, Anand sheds his ambition & begins selling papad to survive. One day, he bumps into Lallan Singh (Aditya Srivastava) who runs Excellence Coaching Centre, an institute for those giving the IIT – JEE exams. He is aware of Anand’s brilliance in mathematics since he was in the college when Anand was felicitated. He gets Anand enrolled in his coaching institute as a premium teacher. Since Anand’s teaching methods guarantee success, he becomes quite sought after. Excellence Coaching Centre management even promote themselves by using Anand’s picture on their banners. Anand’s financial condition also improves as he’s even made one of the signatories. However, he soon realizes that some brilliant students aren’t getting a fair chance to excel in life because of their underprivileged background. Overnight, Anand quits Excellence Coaching Centre. He starts his own centre, where he decides to teach 30 students for IIT entrance exams for free. Not just that, he even arranges for their accommodation & food. Lallan Singh obviously is livid & he tries his best to persuade Anand. When nothing works, he tries to demotivate Anand, saying that all his students who fail will go back to their impoverished lives. It’s important that each & every student of Anand manages to crack the IIT exam.

Sanjeev Dutta’s story is decent & has the potential. However, the incidents shown in the film seem too unreal at places. The makers claim it’s based on a true story but some of the episodes of the 2nd half seem fictional. Sanjeev Dutta’s screenplay is watertight in the 1stever half. There’s too much happening but it’s all written down well. The writing in the 2ndhalf is a bit shaky. Also, the writing seems quite out dated. The good vs bad battle is something one has witnessed in countless number of films before. Many of the scenes of the baddies are typical of the 90’s films especially the manner in which they are plotting to strike against the hero. Sanjeev Dutta’s dialogues are acidic & make the right impact.

Vikas Bahl’s direction is average & could have been better. In the 1st ever half, he manages to handle everything well but cracks begin to develop in the 2nd half & it shows. There are several loose ends; for instance, what angered Lallan Singh & the minister so much about the Super 30 programme that they even get ready to eliminate Anand? The funny part is that Vikas Bahl hints a bit on the entire education scam. But for a better impact, he should have delved a little bit more on the topic. In the absence of the detailing, it looks quite superficial. 2ndly, some characters appear all of a sudden. There’s a way of introducing important characters. In Super 30, Raghunath (Amit Sadh) & Purshottam (Manav Gohil) suddenly spring out of nowhere & it takes a while to understand who they are & what their relevance to the plot is. Similarly, some major characters vanish without a trace as well, towards the climax. The biggest goof up by director Vikas Bahl however is in the Holi sequence. It falls completely flat. It also gives one a déjà vu of Vikas Bahl’s earlier film, Shaandaar in the year 2015. Even the hospital scene in the end seems too out stretched.

Super 30 has an interesting start, depicting Fugga (Vijay Varma) as a kind of narrator who tells the story of Anand to an audience in London. The focus soon shifts to Patna & the beginning portions are not very well directed. But they keep one glued to the screen. A lot happens in the 1st ever half, from Anand getting selected for Cambridge to the struggle faced to get funds to his father’s demise to becoming rich & famous after being employed at the coaching institute to starting his own centre. Hence, there’s never a dull moment in the 75 minute long 1st ever half. The 2nd half begins well & the sequence of the competition between Excellence students & Anand’s students is impressive. But then things go downhill, in the Holi sequence. It’s bizarre to say the least & the intended message just doesn’t come across. The climax too might seem filmy for a section of the audiences. But it is thrilling & also moving due to which the overall impact is not affected much. The final scene is quite uplifting & is an apt way to end the film.

Ajay – Atul’s music is not of the chartbuster variety & one wishes the film had one chartbuster, theme like song. “Jugraafiya” is the best of the lot. “Paisa”is situational. “Question Mark”seems like a good idea on paper but execution is weak. “Niyam Ho”is played at a crucial juncture. “Basanti No Dance”is horrible. Ajay – Atul’s background score is a bit loud but correctly makes the right impact.

Anay Goswamy’s cinematography is appropriate. Allan Amin’s action is realistic & is not over the top. Amit Ray & Subrata Chakraborty’s production design is quite real. Subodh Srivastava & Niharika Bhasin Khan’s costumes are straight out of life. None of the characters look glamorous by any angle. Vikram Gaikwad’s make – up is praiseworthy, especially in the case of Hrithik. Mukesh Chhabra’s casting deserves applause, in the case of the casting of the students particularly. Sreekar Prasad’s editing is disjointed & from an editor of such a caliber, a better job was expected.

Performance wise Super 30 belongs to Hrithik Roshan, no 2 doubts on that! He’s the soul of the film & the reason why one looks forward to the proceedings despite issues in the 2ndhalf. He’s completely convincing as a Bihari & his accent, clothes, make-up, body language et al are spot on. He proves yet again why he’s one of the most accomplished superstars at present! Mrunal Thakur as Rashmi suits the part & delivers a decent performance. It’s a very small role but has a relevance to the story. Aditya Srivastava is quite good in the villainous role. Pankaj Tripathi is gimmicky. In some scenes, it works but in a few places, it doesn’t come across as intended. Virendra Saxena is adorable & his character is sure to win the audiences hearts. Nandish Singh as Pranav Kumar is fine as Anand’s brother. Amit Sadh as Raghunath is too good & has a badass look which suits him. Sadly, he’s hardly there & this is one character you wish had more screen time. Vijay Varma is entertaining in the intro scene but later on his character’s significance will be questioned by the viewers. Rajesh Sharma is wasted & one wonders why his character is even there in the film. Manav Gohil is natural. Karishma Sharma is sizzling in the item song. As for the students, all have done a superb job but the ones who leave an impact are Ghanshyam Kumar as the little Fugga, Deepali Gautam as Kusum & Rahul Raj as Kishore. Ali Haji is quit entertaining.

Tail Piece: On the whole, Super 30 has a fine 1st ever half but goes totally downhill in the 2nd hour. Yet, the impact is made due to the high emotional quotient & also thanks to Hrithik Roshan’s superlative performance.

At the box office, it will require a good word of mouth publicity to rein in the right & adequate footfalls.

Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru District (Urban) B.M.Vijayshankar, who was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs.1.5 Crore for sending a favourable report about I Monetary Advisory (IMA) Group, moved the High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday seeking a CBI probe.
The Karnataka High Court on Thursday ordered issue of notices to the Union and State governments, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Serious Fraud Investigation Organisation (SFIO) and others on a petition by B.M. Vijayshankar, suspended IAS officer, seeking a probe by the CBI into the criminal case registered against M/s I Monetary Advisory (IMA) Group of Companies.

The petitioner was arrested by the SIT on the allegation of taking a bribe of Rs.1.5 crore for submitting a ‘favourable’ report about the IMA Group when he was the deputy commissioner of Bengaluru Urban district and a competent authority under the Karnataka Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Establishments Act, 2004 for the district.
Earlier, Senior Counsel V. Lakshminarayana, appearing for Mr. Vijayshankar, contended that the government could not have constituted an SIT for probing the case against the IMA Group in view of the promulgation of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes (BUDS) Ordinance 2019 by the President of India on February 21, 2019.
It was claimed in his petition that the State government had no jurisdiction to set up the SIT to probe the FIR registered against IMA in view of the promulgation of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes (BUDS) Ordinance 2019 by the President of India on February 21, 2019. The petition is yet to come up for hearing.
It was also contended that the probe on the FIR should be transferred to the CBI in view of Section 29 and 30 of the BUDS Ordinance, 2019, as the provisions indicate that the police officer on recording information of commission of offence under the Ordinance should inform the competent authority. On receipt of information, the authority will have to refer the matter to the Centre to order a CBI probe when the amount involved is of such a magnitude that significantly affects public interest.
Mr. Vijayshankar claimed that he had merely forwarded a report on IMA received from a Deputy Inspector General of Police CID. He also sought direction to the Serious Fraud Investigation Office to probe the IMA case.
The BJP has also demanded a CBI inquiry into the case. The ED had filed the money laundering case against the IMA group of companies and Mohammed Mansoor Khan after reports emerged that he has gone underground fearing investments worth crores of about 40,000 investors have tanked.
Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner,BM Vijayshankar and the Bengaluru North Assistant Commissioner, LC Nagaraj, who was arrested earlier in the case, have been remanded in judicial custody till July 25.

In a major expose,Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said the BJP was trying to help senior Congress legislator R Roshan Baig, who is facing a probe in the multi-crore IMA scam, flee Bengaluru.Karnataka.
Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy confirmed the development and slammed Opposition BJP for allegedly facilitating Baig’s escape bid.
“Today SIT probing the #IMA case detained @rroshanbaig for questioning at the BIAL airport while he was trying leave along with @BSYBJP’s PA Santosh on a chartered flight to Mumbai.I was told that on seeing the SIT,Santhosh ran away while the team apprehended Mr. Baig,” wrote Kumaraswamy.
He added, “BJP MLA Yogeshwar was present at the time there. It’s a shame that @BJP4Karnataka is helping a former minister escape, who is facing a probe in the #IMA case. This clearly shows #BJP’ s direct involvement in destabilizing the govt through horse trading”wrote Kumaraswamy.
Reacting to the CM HD Kumaraswamy tweet BJP said,CM @hd_kumaraswamy is using the state machinery to save his govt now. Mr. Roshan Baig was given time till 19th July to appear before SIT. This shows how the state Govt is blackmailing and treating their own MLAs’ using the institutions.Wrote BJP.
It is false that @BSYBJP’s PA Santhosh was travelling along with Mr. Baig.CM is peddling fake news & misleading the state. It was only Mr.Baig who was travelling & their was no 2nd passenger. We demand to check boarding passes & CCTV footage to put out the facts.BJP reacted to CM tweets.
It is said that there was a midnight high drama in kempegowda international airport while detaining the Rebel MLA questioned SIT officers why you are detaining me do you have a arrest warrant as you have served me notice to appear on July 19th there is still time for me to reply to your notice he questioned the SIT officers.
As per the summons notice no police officer can detain any person as the suspect to whom they serve notice it is only a summons so the officer cannot arrest or detain anyone only for summons they should serve the person summons notice three times and if then also he does not appear for it means then they should send a notice again asking him to appear if not the officer should go to their place and take his statement and collect the details says police sources But only based on summons they cannot detain says sources.
A former Minister in the previous Siddaramaiah government, Baig landed in the IMA controversy after the company owner Khan alleged that Baig took Rs 400 crore from him but did not return it. Khan is the prime accused in the multi crore IMA scam.
The MLA wanted to appear on July 25 but the SIT directed him to depose on July 19 instead, SIT said.
Regarding the appearance of MLA Mr Roshan Baig, before the SIT, he has consented to appear before SIT on July 25. But due to the necessity of speeding up the investigation on the part of the SIT, a second notice is served to him to appear on July 19,” the SIT said in a statement.
The MLA had refuted the charges calling them baseless and frivolous.
Baig has been sulking for quite sometime and had flayed party leaders Siddaramaiah and state president Dinesh Gundu Rao for the party’s poor show in the Lok Sabha election. The party later suspended him for his “anti-party” activities.
At the height of the resignation drama in Karnataka, he joined the bandwagon of 16 MLAs who tendered their resignation from the assembly, pushing the ruling coalition to the verge of collapse.
Hours after his resignation on July 9, the SIT served him a notice asked him to appear on July 11 but the MLA sought time and said he would appear on Monday but did not turn up.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Mansoor Khan in a video message on YouTube said he would return to India “within 24 hours” to refund money to the investors.
He said he wanted to come early but due to health issues he could not. He claimed he had high diabetes and blood pressure and that there were three blockages in his heart.
“By the grace of God, I will back to India within 24 hours.I have faith in the Indian judiciary,” Khan said in the video.
He added that once he landed in India, he will hand over documents and details to the police department.
“We will try to get the money back from those who extorted from me and took bribe,” he said.
The Enforcement Directorate has filed a money laundering case against the IMA group of companies and Mohammed Mansoor Khan after reports emerged that he has gone underground fearing investments worth crores of about 40,000 investors have tanked.
Before he went missing, Mansoor Khan threatened to commit suicide saying that corruption in the state government as well as the central government pushed him to the wall.
The SIT has arrested 21 people so far, including the Nominated corporator,Deputy commissioner of Bengaluru urban district and an assistant commissioner of Bengaluru North sub-division, who allegedly took bribe from Khan for covering up the case.

England win World Cup after dramatic Super Over against New Zealand

July 15, 2019 by Nasheman

After Eoin Morgan’s side finished on 241 all out in pursuit of New Zealand’s 241-8, the final came down to a six-ball shootout for each team.

England's captain Eoin Morgan is sprayed with champagne as he raises the trophy after winning the Cricket World Cup final match between England and New Zealand at Lord's cricket ground in London, Sunday, July 14, 2019. England won after a super over after the scores ended tied after 50 overs each.

LONDON: If strokes from the bat can’t do it, a stroke of luck can. In perhaps the biggest piece of fortune recorded on the field of international cricket, the World Cup final turned on its head. Riding some scintillating batting by Ben Stokes and an extraordinary deflection off his bat, the Cup came home!

There were two ties, one after 50 overs, another after the Super Over. In the end, cricket’s biggest prize was decided on the number of boundaries scored. England 26, New Zealand 17. It was also the first time that an international match had been decided in this manner. Ripley’s Believe it or Not could not have bettered this. No chance.

Lord’s is a grand old venue. There are many relics of the past strewn around. It seemed the spirits of the past are also around. What happened in the World Cup final was scarcely real. Perhaps a story out of fantasy would have been more believable. Not perhaps! Surely.

All the supernatural forces were in play. And England being the home team benefited. Some home advantage this was. When all looked gone after a titanic struggle, came that stroke of luck.

England would have needed seven from two balls had a throw from the deep not deflected off Stokes’s bat and run all the way to the boundary. Rules do permit that if it happens unintentionally and in this case, Stokes didn’t do it on purpose.

The equation came down to three from two balls. It was Stokes’ luck, England’s and of everybody present that it turned the 12th World Cup final into the most thrilling one-day match ever. Of course, the drama was not over and concluded with the first-ever Super Over in the history of the competition, which added to what all was going around.

There were extraordinary scenes. Everybody was shaking with excitement and disbelief. Hands trembled in the press box while typing. Jaws fell off.

“What have we witnessed? Is it real?” was the common refrain. It wasn’t. Not by any of the usual parameters followed on a cricket field. This was out of the books of spirits, fairies and unicorns. How could it be real! It kept going on and on.

Even in the last 12 deliveries of the match, the Super Over. Nobody knew what was going to happen because till the last piece of action, everything was open.

Not that what was happening before the closing stages was not exciting enough. Wickets tumbling, run rate climbing, diving catches and fortunes fluctuating — it had everything.

If New Zealand looked good at one stage, England came back through the partnership between Stokes and Jos Buttler. And then New Zealand seemed to have nosed ahead again. Just as it seemed that they had it wrapped up, that deflection brought England back. Spooky? What else!

It was not possible for anyone to keep calm. Beyond imagination it was, but the throws had to be accurate and hands couldn’t tremble while doing that. Jason Roy showed it in the end, with a hurl from deep mid-wicket which ran out Martin Guptill to force the second tie of the match. It was an extraordinary display of nerves of steel. If there had to be an unsung hero of the match, Roy it had to be. A fumble, throw a few inches wide, and the Cup would have travelled to New Zealand.

It was difficult to see and believe, forget describing it in words. Fittingly in an uncanny way, it happened in a place which has seen a lot. The spirits of all those tales were present on Sunday. They came, they saw and they conquered. That England won was just incidental.

An under-construction building in Bengaluru’s Pulikeshi Nagar collapsed on Wednesday morning killing five people and leaving 11 others injured. An adjacent building also tilted upon the impact of the collapse.

Fire department services, NDRF, SDRF and Civil Defence team have been rushed to the spot. According to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the incident took place around 2 am.

“Rs 5 lakh compensation will be given to the victims’ families from the BBMP. The same will later be recovered from the building owner. Once the rescue operation is done, the entire building will be razed,” Bangalore Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun told

According to police, the injured are being treated in a local hospital. Five of the injured are labourers. “I have instructed officials to take strict action and to demolish such buildings with illegal structures,” Mallikarjun said after visiting the site at Thomas Town in Pulikeshi Nagar.

A primary investigation by BBMP officials at the spot found that the area was earlier a marshy place. The building had a sanctioned plan for only three floors along with a cellar. But the owners had illegally constructed an additional floor which led to the collapse of the building.

Medium and Large Scale Industries Minister KJ George expressed grief at the loss of lives. “Extremely saddened to know about the loss of lives. Police, Fire officials and concerned are carrying out rescue work,” he said.

According to local residents, the two buildings tilted around 2 am and they heard a cracking sound like an earthquake when the under-construction building collapsed.

The Supreme Court on Thursday told the 10 Congress and JD(S) rebel  MLAs to meet the Karnataka Assembly Speaker at 6 pm and convey their decision to resign from the Cabinet if they wish so. The court added the Speaker should decide on the resignations today itself.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was hearing a plea by the dissident legislators who alleged that Speaker Ramesh Kumar was deliberately not accepting their resignations, a move that has threatened the stability of the coalition government.

Assuring security to the rebel MLAs, the apex court directed the state DGP to provide protection and said the decision taken by the Speaker must be intimated to the bench on Friday.

The court also asked the state police Chief to provide security to the MLAs after senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi appearing for them said one MLAs was manhandled when he went to the Assembly building Wednesday.
