IAF inducts 8 Apache combat helicopters into its combat fleet

September 3, 2019 by Nasheman

Eight helicopters have been inducted into the air force in the first batch out of the 22 procured from the US.

Boeing AH- 64E Apache Guardian Attack Helicopters

NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force has added more teeth to its combat capability by inducting eight Apache AH-64E attack helicopters.

In a ceremony presided over by the Chief Guest Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa, air chief handed over the keys to the base commander of Pathankot. The First Squadron of the Apache’s is being raised at the Pathankot Air Base, Punjab.

Speaking on the occasion Air Chief Dhanoa said, “Apache attack helicopters are being purchased to replace the Mi-35 fleet. Apaches will enhance the capability of the Indian Air Force.”

Talking about the capabilities of the Boeing produced helicopter Air Chief said, “Alongside, the capability to shoot fire and forget ATGM, air to air missiles, rockets & other ammunitions, it also has modern EW capabilities to provide versatility to helicopter in a network centric aerial warfare.”
These aircraft have been modified specifically to suit the exacting standards demanded by the IAF.

The order for production, training and support of 22 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters was finalized by the Indian Ministry of Defence in 2015. The Indian government also cleared the acquisition of an additional six Apaches for the Indian Army in 2017. By 2020, the IAF will operate a fleet of 22 Apaches.

The India specific AH-64E Apache completed successful first flights in July 2018 and the first batch of Indian Air Force crew began their training to fly the Apache in the US in 2018.

Boeing has delivered more than 2,200 Apaches to customers around the world since the aircraft entered production and India is the 14th nation to select it for its military.

Apache helicopters can also be used for reconnaissance, security, peacekeeping operations, and in attack mode both land and littoral combat environments.

IAF is flying helicopters since 1954. Since then there has been no looking back for rotary wings which has proved its mettle. Mi35 in the past played a crucial role. Apache will replace the ageing fleet of Mi35, said Air Chief Dhanoa.

The clip was shared across social media platforms and was viewed over 2 lakh times on Twitter, receiving quirky responses.

Bengaluru, We Have A Problem: Artist Turns Astronaut To Reach Civic Body

The 45-second clip begins with what looks like low-gravity steps on the lunar surface.

Rocky terrain, a man in a space suit and the “moonwalk” – no, this is not the description of a mission to the Earth’s nearest celestial neighbour but of a street in Bengauluru where an artist recreated a scene to highlight the lunar crater-sized potholes in the city.

The 45-second clip begins with what looks like low-gravity steps on the lunar surface. The illusion of the “moonwalk” quickly fades away as an auto rickshaw enters the frame. The camera then pans to show the pothole ridden Tunga Nagar Main Road in North Bengaluru.

The video – “Hello bbmp” was posted by Baadal Nanjundaswamy, a city-based street artist. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike or BBMP is Bengaluru’s civic authority. The artist, in his post, tagged several BBMP officials.

This is not Baadal Nanjundaswamy’s first attempt at drawing attention to the condition of roads and potholes. In the past, the artist has been part of several street art installations that highlight the pothole menace across the city.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike had announced last week that engineers of the civic body will be fined if they fail to fill potholes in the city. There are over 2,500 potholes in Bengaluru, it said.

Up To 10 Years’ Jail Proposed For Violence Against Doctors In Draft Bill

September 3, 2019 by Nasheman

The Health Ministry has asked for feedback from the public on draft Healthcare Service Personnel and Clinical Establishments (Prohibition of Violence and Damage to Property) Bill, 2019

NEW DELHI

Courtesy: NDTV

The development comes three days after a mob killed a retired 73-year-old doctor at a tea estate

Anyone who attacks a doctor at a hospital may be jailed for up to 10 years or fined Rs. 10 lakh, according to a draft bill the Health Ministry has prepared to deal with rising cases of assault on doctors while they are at work.

The development comes three days after a mob killed a retired 73-year-old doctor at a tea estate in Assam because he was not present when a temporary worker died at the estate hospital.

The Health Ministry has asked for feedback from the public on how to improve the draft Healthcare Service Personnel and Clinical Establishments (Prohibition of Violence and Damage to Property) Bill, 2019, which was made public on Monday.

“We want to reduce increasing cases of violence against doctors. We are looking for suggestions on the draft legislation before the bill is finalised. The objections or suggestions may be forwarded within 30 days. The maximum punishment will be 10 years imprisonment with Rs. 10 lakh fine,” said a Health Ministry official, news agency ANI reported.

Cases of people thrashing doctors on duty are not uncommon across the country, especially at crowded state-run hospitals that see thousands of patients every day. The assaults are usually triggered by the death of a patient or what people perceive as lack of attention from doctors.

Doctors and the associations that represent them say they have been unfairly targeted. They have been asking the government to bring in a law to protect them, instead of reacting to incidents with stop-gap measures like posting more guards at hospitals.

“…It has become necessary to prohibit acts of violence, to provide for punishment by making such acts of violence… non-bailable offence and to provide compensation for injury to healthcare service personnel or for causing damage or loss to the property of clinical establishments,” the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Medical associations have condemned the lynching of Assam doctor Dr Deben Dutta, who had a long, illustrious career. His colleagues say he was a soft-spoken, amicable person.

A single bite: dengue fever hits Karnataka post-monsoon

September 2, 2019 by Nasheman

Vector-borne diseases are back with a bang this monsoon season and have put lakhs of people across cities and towns at risk.

BENGALURU: A serious attack involves weeks of recovery, tossing and turning in hellish delirium. Sweating, fever, muscle spasms, vomiting and a thumping pain behind the eyes and in the joints. Unfortunately, this year, the monsoons have brought a deadly wave of the dengue fever to Karnataka, sweeping across and killing hundreds, while leaving tens of thousands sick.

The mosquito-borne viral disease has become one of the worst nightmares for people. Also called ‘breakbone fever’ or ‘dandy fever’, it is caused by a family of viruses and is transmitted via the
Aedes mosquito.

It is these deadly insects which have become a bane for people, especially in the state capital of Bengaluru, which has the highest number of dengue-positive cases in Karnataka. To make matters worse, the number of Chikungunya cases, also spread by mosquitoes, is on the rise as well.

Malaria, a common ailment in the Malnad and coastal areas, has also crept into the BBMP limits owing to uncontrolled breeding of mosquitoes. Meanwhile floods across several districts have made matters worse with both dengue and Chikungunya becoming extremely rampant. So bad is the situation that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has listed Karnataka as one of the five worst-hit states this year among Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala along with Gujarat and Rajasthan.

“This year has been bad,” says Dr Srikantha N, a General Physician with a government hospital in Bengaluru who claims to see a minimum of 20 cases with suspected symptoms of dengue every day. “It has been so bad that union minister Harsh Vardhan had even convened a meeting with all states to tackle this vector-borne disease. However, not much seems to be happening in this area,” he explained.

According to data shared by the National Health Mission Family and Welfare Services, Karnataka, the total number of cases of dengue has crossed 5,000 this year. Unfortunately, the dengue virus has also been changing and there has been a ‘pathological alteration’ medical experts say. Dr Bhagath Ram, a physician at Victoria Hospital said the virus has been attacking vital organs in the abdomen more quickly and frequently with altered symptoms this season resulting in quicker deaths due to multi-organ failure.

“While haemorrhage and skin rashes had been the predominant initial effects of the virus till last year, they have changed to kidney and liver failure, pancreas ailment or water accumulation in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract this year, making recovery difficult,” Dr Gopikrishna, a paediatrician at a private hospital said.

“While you can deal with hemorrhage more easily with platelet transfusion, it becomes very difficult if the organs start malfunctioning. This has been happening very frequently this year,” he added.
The virus has also been triggering diarrhoea. “The symptoms have been treacherous this year making victims take it lightly. Instead of waiting for rashes to appear or platelet to drop, dengue patients should consult doctors immediately,” Dr Prashanth RS, a general physician and consultant from Koramangala said.

Experts suspect that the altered symptoms could have been triggered by a mutation of the dengue serotype and there is an urgent need to analyse the virus in a lab. “Unless the virus is tested nothing can be done in this regard. There is very little research being done on the subject in the state,” he opined.
The surge in dengue in the city is not only a pressing health issue for people and health authorities, but with many cases of severe dengue, the disease is weighing heavy on people’s pockets. While the tests themselves cost approximately Rs 2,000. Affected patients claim that the doctors ask them to test a minimum of twice or thrice to confirm that there are no traces of dengue left in their system after treatment. These tests, as well as the missed workdays,  are costing them dearly.

In Dakshina Kannada, over 200 cases were recorded in August with as many as 12 suspected deaths
The urban belts of Belagavi, Bailhongal and Gokak in North Karnataka have seen  registration of the highest number of cases
In Hubli-Dharwad, officials are conducting surveys. No deaths have occurred and 108 cases were reported from January this year
Kalaburagi district saw 173 cases of dengue being recorded till the end of August. Last year, this figure was at 89 confirmed cases
Mysuru district has recorded 56 confirmed cases with 25 from Myusuru city alone

Assam NRC: No clarity yet on when rejects can appeal

September 2, 2019 by Nasheman

State had said those excluded from the final list would have a 120-day window to move tribunals seeking inclusion

GOROMARI/ASSAM: THERE is no clarity as of now as to when the process to file appeals in the Foreigners’ Tribunals by those excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will begin.

The state government said they would get a 120-day window to move the tribunals seeking the inclusion of their names. However, opposition Congress demanded the authorities first provide certified copies to the excluded citing reasons for their exclusion and only after that, the process to file appeals should begin.

The NRC has not made those excluded “stateless”. None excluded will be put in the detention camps. There is no question of deportation as the Centre and Bangladesh government have already said that it is an internal matter of India.

The appeals in the tribunals have to be disposed of in six months from the day they were filed. As such, detention, if any, will begin following the disposal of the cases. It should be after six months to ten months depending on when the excluded file the appeals.

Over 19 lakh people have been excluded from the NRC. The Assam government does not have the facilities to keep so many people in detention. The jails where the declared foreigners are kept are already crowded. There is just one detention camp which is coming up in Goalpara but it can house a maximum of 3,000 people. The government has taken a decision to build ten such detention camps. Altogether, they will be able to house 33,000 people.

If people do not get relief even after filing appeals in the tribunals, they can challenge their exclusion by moving the Gauhati High Court and then the Supreme Court.

The state government has already decided to extend legal aid to them free of cost when they fight their cases in the tribunals. Assam has 100 Foreigners’ Tribunals and the government said it would set up another 200 such tribunals.

People left out can claim inclusion by producing any of the 15 documents specified by NRC authorities.

MEA respite
People left off the NRC are not “stateless” and will continue to enjoy all the rights as before till they exhaust all the remedies available under the law, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Sunday.

It said exclusion from the NRC has no implication on the rights of an individual resident in Assam and that they will not be deprived of any rights or entitlements which they have enjoyed before.

The MEA’s comments came in the wake of commentaries in sections of the foreign media about certain aspects of the final NRC which it said are “incorrect”. Out of 3.3 crore applicants, over 19 lakh people were excluded from the final NRC published on Saturday.

Jasprit Bumrah Takes hat-trick to captain Kohli

September 2, 2019 by Nasheman

Part of the credit for Bumrah’s hat-trick go to skipper Kohli, who insisted on a review after Roston Chase, his third victim, was initially given not out by the on-field umpire Paul Reiffel.

KINGSTON: Part of the credit for Bumrah’s hat-trick go to skipper Kohli, who insisted on a review after Roston Chase, his third victim, was initially given not out by the on-field umpire Paul Reiffel.

“I owe my hat-trick to the captain,” Jasprit Bumrah told an enamoured Virat Kohli after blowing away the West Indies with his heady cocktail of line and length, pace and bounce.

Known as much for his infectious energy as for his incredible batting, Kohli was caught on the stump mic saying, “What a bowler, man! What a bowler”, after Bumrah removed one the West Indies batsmen.

The review was correct as Bumrah became only the third Indian to claim a hat-trick in Test cricket.ADVERTISING

“Actually I didn’t know, I was not very sure of the appeal, I thought it was bat so I didn’t appeal so much, but it was a good review in the end. So, I think, I owe that hat-trick to the captain,” Bumrah said as Kohli held the mic for ‘BCCI TV’ during an interaction.

I owe my hat-trick to you – Bumrah tells @imVkohli @Jaspritbumrah93 became the third Indian to take a Test hat-trick. Hear it from the two men who made it possible

It is not easy to sweep Kohli off his feet, but Bumrah has done that a few times in recent times, and the second day of the second Test against the West Indies was one of those moments.

In a lethal opening spell, Bumrah (6/16) rattled the West Indies by picking up the first five wickets, three of which came in successive balls in the ninth over.

“Sometimes when there is so much of help in the wicket, we saw in the previous inning as well there was a lot of bounce they were getting a lot of bounce, they were getting late movement as well.

“So, sometimes, when there is so much of help you can get greedy, you can go for wickets, you can try to be over-aggressive, that time you have to keep things simple, just try and bowl good balls and create pressure.

That was the thing that was going on in my head,” Bumrah said.

The leader of the team asked the leader of the pace pack about understanding among the fast bowlers.

“Understanding is very good with other pacers. There is a lot of communication that goes on and off the field as well. When I am getting wickets, somebody else’ job at that time is to create pressure, when somebody else is getting wickets my job is to create pressure.

“So a lot of communication goes — when there is no help what we can do — Ishant has played more than 90 Test matches, Shami has played a lot of Tests.

“So lot of ideas come in and then we try to help each other if things are not going well, push each other. So that’s a good relation going on and hopefully we will continue,” Bumrah said.
