Dhoni becomes fifth Indian to breach 10k-run mark in ODIs

 Nasheman News : Former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday became the fifth Indian to reach the elusive 10,000-run mark in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for the country.

Dhoni, who was missing the feat by just a run, entered the 10,000th club with a single off Jhye Richardson in the ongoing first ODI between India and Australia. 

The Ranchi stumper had earlier accumulated a total of 10,173 runs in the 50-over format during a home series against West Indies in October 2018 however, the record also contained the 174 runs, which he smashed against the Africa XI, while representing the Asia XI in a three-match rubber in 2007.

Before Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli had scored 10,000 ODI runs for India. 

Overall, Dhoni is the 12th player in history of ODI cricket to reach the 10,000-run club. 

SC collegium recommends two HC judges for elevation

Nasheman News :The Supreme Court collegium has recommended the elevation of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Sanjiv Sanjiv Khanna of the Delhi High Court to the apex court.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the collegium chaired by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Jan 10, which reconsidered the recommendations made by the previous collegium on December 12 last.

Out of the 31 sanctioned strength of judges, the Supreme Court had vacancies for 5 seats. Ouf of this, two have been recommended to be filled.

At its January 12 meeting, the collegium discussed the names of Chief Justices as well as senior puisne Judges of all High Courts, eligible for elevation to the Supreme Court. 

“The Collegium is of the considered view that at present the following persons are more deserving and suitable in all respects than other Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of High Courts, for being appointed as Judges of the4 Supreme Court,” it said while deciding on the names of Justice Maheshwari and Justice Khanna.

Apart from Chief JusticeGogoi, the ohers in the Collegium are Justice A.K. Sikri, Justice S.A. Bobde, Justice N.V. Ramana and Justice Arun Mishra. 

Indian gets 13 years jail for sex with minor in Singapore

Nasheman News : A 31-year-old Indian man was sentenced to 13 years in jail and 12 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to one charge of sexual assault of a minor and two charges of attempted statutory rape, the media reported.

Udhayakumar Dhakshinamoorthy, a minimart worker courted a 12-year-old girl with gifts and called her his “wife”, grooming her to engage in intrusive sexual acts with him over a period of three months in 2016, The New Paper reported on Friday.

Announcing the sentence at the High Court on Thursday, Judicial Commissioner Pang Khang Chau said that Udhayakumar had exploited the innocence and naivety of the girl and morally corrupted her.

Four other charges were also considered during the hearing, the report said.

The offence, which took place between September and December 2016, came to light after Dhakshinamoorthy’s pregnant girlfriend discovered a nude video of the minor girl on his phone.

The court heard that when Dhakshinamoorthy first asked the girl for sex after taking her to the staircase of a block of flats, she told him she was not sure what sex was, to which he responded that he would teach her, the daily reported.

The man admitted that he tried to have sex with the girl on two occasions, but failed.

After his second foiled attempt, he gave the girl 50 Singapore dollars, ended their “relationship” and no longer allowed her to take things from the minimart for free.

“This proved his previous generosity was merely a facade to get the girl to have sex with him,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor Gail Wong in sentencing arguments.

Dhakshinamoorthy began working at the minimart in a housing estate in September 2016. During their first chat, he asked the girl for a nude selfie of herself, and she complied, according to the report.

After this, he would let her take ice cream, toys and tidbits from the minimart without paying. The man also took the minor to various places to engage in “petting”. 

“He used to give her between 5 and 10 Singapore dollars after each session. This escalated to more intrusive sexual acts, including attempts at sexual intercourse,” the court heard.

He also started referring to the minor as his “wife” and told her he wanted to marry her, while the girl called him “uncle”.

During the period, Dhakshinamoorthy also started seeing a woman. In May 2017, while checking his phone, the woman found the video of the minor girl in her school uniform exposing herself. Later, she lodged a police report against Dhakshinamoorthy.

Sikkim CM launches ‘One Family, One Job’ scheme

Nasheman News : Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling on Saturday launched the ‘One Family, One Job’ scheme that envisions jobs to a member of every family which does not have a government job in the state.

The longest serving Chief Minister in Independent India personally handed out temporary appointment letters to one person from each of the 32 Assembly constituencies in the state to kick-start the scheme during ‘Rojgar Mela 2019’ at the Paljor stadium here.

Chamling’s Sikkim Democratic Font government has announced that 20,000 youths would immediately be given temporary jobs under the scheme.

Amid loud cheers and tumultuous slogan shouting “Pawan Chamling Zindabad’, the Chief Minister declared that the temporary/ad hoc appointments being given now would be regularised over the next five years, and all of them would become permanent government employees.

The new recruits are being taken in 12 government departments.

“It is a matter of great pride and happiness for us and a great opportunity for the youth of our state,” said Chamling during a speech lasting over two hours.


Hardik, Rahul suspended pending probe, asked to return (Intro Roundup)

[Nasheman news] New Delhi All-rounder Hardik Pandya and opener Lokesh Rahul were on Friday asked to go home from the three-ODI series against Australia starting in Sydney on Saturday after being suspended for their controversial comments during a television talk show.

The BCCI, in a statement, said the tainted pair would be barred “from playing any form of cricket after their comments on a TV show”.

“The duo will now return to India and an inquiry and proceedings will be made against them for misconduct and indiscipline that have been initiated under Rule 41 of the BCCI Constitution.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee will soon name their replacements for the ODI series against Australia and the tour to New Zealand,” the statement read.

The decision comes after Diana Edulji, the woman member of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), advocated suspension of the two until the quantum of sentence is announced.

CoA Chairman Vinod Rai had earlier recommended a two-ODI ban for them but Diana decided to seek legal opinion before taking any action.

“Based on legal opinion and till the time the final procedure is laid down to address this issue, (I) will recommend that a communication be sent to the players concerned and the team immediately,” Diana wrote in an email, accessed by IANS.

“It will be imperative that the players be put under suspension till a further course of action is decided for this misconduct,” the mail added.

In this regard, a five-member Apex Council comprising the elected office bearers — President, Vice President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer — has been formed to conduct the probe.

The duo had made an appearance in a popular television talk show hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar during which they made several comments which were widely perceived to be sexist and vulgar.

Following intense criticism, Pandya had issued an apology in social media, although Rahul is yet to come up with his reaction.

In the given scenario, India will be compelled to take the field without Pandya and Rahul in the series opener at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

According to a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source, Rahul is not in the first choice of playing XI, while Pandya is also out at least of the first ODI even as the team management is still awaiting a final call.

Earlier on Friday, breaking his silence on the allegedly sexist comments made by Pandya and Rahul, India skipper Virat Kohli denounced the duo’s statements and said the team management is still waiting for a decision on them.

Terming the comments as “inappropriate”, the 30-year-old skipper said the belief in the dressing room is completely different from the individual comments of the two young players.

“We as the Indian cricket team and responsible cricketers do not support such views,” Kohli said during the pre-match press conference in Sydney.

“The two players concerned have realised what has gone wrong and they have understood the magnitude of what has happened,” he added.

On being asked about the possible combination if the two are banned, Kohli said: “From the combination and team balance point of view, yes, you’ll have to think about the combination you’ll need then.

“You don’t have control over these things so you have to address it the way it unfolds. That’s how we are looking at it … the combinations will have to be looked at when the decision comes and from there on we’ll see what needs to be done about the whole situation.”

Three half-centuries guide Australia to 288/5 vs India

Sydney, Jan 12 (IANS) Some fantastic middle-order batting by Australia helped them post 288/5 against India in the first ODI of the three-match rubber at the Sydney Cricket Ground here on Saturday.

After a poor beginning, the Australian middle-order stepped up when it was needed the most and four good knocks guided them to reach a good total. Usman Khawaja (59), Shaun Marsh (54), Peter Handscomb (73) and Marcus Stoinis (47 not out) starred with the bat for Australia while Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav picked two wickets each, conceding 66 and 54 runs respectively.

Opting to bat, the hosts were off to a shaky start as Bhuvaneshwar struck for India, dismissing opener Aaron Finch (6) cheaply in the third over, which was also the pacer’s 100th ODI wicket. A good length delivery from Bhuvaneshwar sneaked between the bat and pad gap to dislodge Finch’s off-stump with Australia score reading eight runs.

Alex Carey was then joined by Khawaja and the duo tried to stabilise the Australian innings before chinaman Kuldeep gave the second jolt to the hosts, breaking a short 33-run partnership. 

A good length ball was too close to cut but Carey gave it a try and an outside edge landed safely at Rohit Sharma’s hand at first slip.

The fall saw Khawaja being joined by Marsh and both batsmen then played sensibly to rescue Australia from the early troubles. The duo added a crucial 92 runs for the third wicket before Ravindra Jadeja caught Khawaja in front of the wicket in the 29th over.

Khawaja contributed with 59 runs off 81 balls, which contained six boundaries.

Marsh and incoming batsman Handscomb then added 53-runs for the fourth wicket, helping Australia approach near the 200-digit mark. However, just when the partnership was looking settled, Kuldeep came with another breakthrough, dismissing a settled Marsh on 54.

Marsh while trying to shift gears to increase the run-rate, tried to clear the long-on boundary but Mohammed Shami came forward to take a tumbling catch.

Handscomb and Stoinis then added a quick 46 runs quick runs in just five overs, and clobbered the Indian bowlers to most part of the ground as they took their side to 248/4 in 47 overs. 

While trying to accelerate the run-rate, Handscomb however, failed to clear the fence off a Bhuvaneshwar delivery and departed after a valuable 73 off 61 balls.

Stoinis (47 unbeaten off 43 balls) and incoming batsman Glen Maxwell (11 off 5 deliveries) showed some fireworks in the death overs, firing 34 runs in the last 16 balls as Australia reached to a fighting 288/5 in their 50 overs.

Why is Naseeruddin Shah under attack? (Column: Bollywood Spotlight) By Subhash K. Jha

It is strange how I never thought of Naseeruddin Shah as a Muslim until now when his religious identity is being used against him to prove he is anti-national.

But hang on. Why is Naseer anti-national? Because he expressed trepidation about the future of this country and, more specifically, his children.

Here is what Naseer said: “The poison has already spread. It will be very difficult to capture this djinn back in the bottle. There is complete impunity for those who take law into their own hands. In many areas we are witnessing that the death of a cow has more significance than that of a police officer. I feel anxious thinking about my children. Because they don’t have a religion. Tomorrow if a mob surrounds them and asks ‘Are you a Hindu or a Muslim’, they will have no answer. It worries me because I don’t see the situation improving anytime soon.”

I am a little lost after repeatedly reading this. Which part of the observation is anti-national? Have we all not felt the same terror grip our hearts in recent times as mobs decided to lynch alleged cattle-offenders? Or set on fire a rape victim who doesn’t withdraw her case against her offenders? Don’t we all worry about our children? Except maybe Anupam Kher, who thinks everything is hunky-dory in India today.

But you never know what will be deemed “anti-national” in today’s super-charged atmosphere of pseudo-patriotism, will you? Is it anti-national to say Vivek Oberoi playing the Prime Minister is a bit of a joke? Or is it seditious to suggest that demonetisation was a demoniacal disaster? Am I going to be branded anti-national for defending Naseer’s right to defend his family? Is it right to book him a ticket to Karachi because he spoke about his insecurities?

But I am happy to inform you that Naseer is not going anywhere. He is not wrong in feeling anxious about the future. And if he speaks up about his insecurities and is slammed for it, then isn’t it proof that he’s right in feeling insecure?

As the outspoken Swara Bhaskar said to me: “Quite simply, the attack on Naseeruddin Shah proves his point more than anything else. Intolerance is a government-approved malaise in this new Hindustan of ours.”

My dear Shabana Azmi is right in saying there should be some amount of distinction between the government and the national identity. If one criticises the government, one is not being anti-national. If one doesn’t watch Anupam Kher play Manmohan Singh, one is not pro-Congress. And if one disagrees with Mrs Kirron Kher that “The Accidental Prime Minister” (which coincidentally stars her husband) should be sent to the Oscars, one is not anti-national either.

The country is in the grip of an unprecedented culture of conformity. Everybody must love certain politicians to qualify as a true Indian. And if you have any reservations about any of the government’s policies (including reservations) you will be booked an air ticket to Pakistan. Or worse, forced to watch Vivek Oberoi play our Prime Minister on the day the film releases.

I threw away my Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Mehndi Hassan CDs the day Mrs Kher declared her husband’s film Oscar-worthy without seeing it. Am I a good Indian?

Mamata observes Swami Vivekananda’s 156th birth anniversary

KolkataUrging everyone to remember Swami Vivekananda’s message of peace and brotherhood, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday observed the great thinker’s 156th birth anniversary.

“Today is the birth anniversary of the great preacher and philosopher, #SwamiVivekananda. We must always remember the message of peace and brotherhood that Swami Ji stood for,” Banerjee tweeted.

“We are observing #VivekUtsav in his memory across the state.”

Mentioning the importance of the day across the country she wrote: “#SwamiVivekananda’s birthday is also celebrated as #NationalYouthDay. The youth of the country should come together to dispel the climate of hatred and uncertainty and work for the greater glory of this great nation”.

Vivekananda was born as Narendranath Datta in the then Calcutta on January 12, 1863. He died on July 4, 1902.

Foggy Saturday morning in Delhi

[Nasheman news] New DelhiIt was a foggy morning in the national capital on Saturday with the minimum temperature recorded at 7.1 degrees Celsius, the season’s average.

The weather office predicted light rain towards the night which may bring some improvement in the air quality levels “which have already improved in the last few days due to high wind speed”.

“There was moderate fog in the morning. The sky will remain partly cloudy becoming generally cloudy towards the afternoon and evening, with a possibility of very light rain towards the night,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.

The air quality in Delhi was recorded in the ‘very poor’ category with the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 382, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research.

The visibility in the morning was 300 metres at around 8.30 a.m. which improved to 400 metres by 9.30 a.m.

Humidity at 8.30 a.m. was recorded at 100 per cent — a highly unfavourable condition for pollutants to disperse. 

The maximum temperature during the day is expected to hover around 22 degrees Celsius.

On Friday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.8 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season’s average, while the maximum settled at 22.3 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average.

Nasheman News : A delegation of young Hindi film actors Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, and filmmakers Karan Johar, Rohit Shetty and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Thursday to discuss how the entertainment industry can contribute to nation building.

The ‘Prime Minister’s Squad’ — as Shetty put it — also included Ekta Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao, Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar.

Karan called the meeting an “incredible opportunity”.

“As a community, there is a huge interest to contribute to nation building. There is so much that we want to do, and can do. This dialogue was towards how and in what ways we can do that…

“Together we would love to inspire and ignite positive changes to a transformative India,” Karan wrote on Instagram alongside a squad selfie with Modi.

Karan thanked the government on behalf of the film industry for the GST reduction in movie ticket prices that was implemented recently.

Movie tickets costing more that Rs 100 were brought down from 28 to 18 per cent — a move that was hailed by the industry.

It was a result of two meetings held with the PM last year.

While their past meetings drew ire for zero women representation, this time Alia, Ekta, Ashwiny and Bhumi lent the woman power.

Tiwari, who directed “Nil Battey Sannata”, said in a statement: “It was an honour meeting our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji with inspiring lovely friends. An interaction that takes storytelling to new heights… Building a better society through entertainment. Thank you for the GST reduction and space to connect thoughts.”

Bhumi tweeted: “Thank you for your time honourable Modi sir. Truly a moment to be remembered.”

Ranveer was all smiles as he posed while hugging Modi.

“Jaadoo ki Jhappi! Joy to meet the Honourable Prime Minister of our great nation,” tweeted the ‘Padmaavat’ star.

Rajkummar said it was an “insightful meeting”, while ‘Uri’ actor Vicky was “happy and honoured” to meet the PM and Sidharth wrote: “Thank you Narendra Modi sir for an enriching and insightful conversation. It was an honour to meet you today and we are grateful for your support towards the film industry.”
