India hit Test mode with first warm-up game, look to sort combinations

India hit Test mode with first warm-up game, look to sort combinations

Sydney: India will look to figure out their playing XI as the Test squad gets into the groove by taking on Australia ‘A’ in a three-day warm-up game at Drummoyne Oval from Sunday.

With India and Australia playing the second T20I on the same day, the visiting Test squad has been named India ‘A’ for the first of the two practice games scheduled ahead of the much-anticipated four-Test series.

The tour games will be a chance to sort out India’s combinations both in the batting and bowling departments ahead of the opening Day-Night Test scheduled at Adelaide from December 17.

In batting, Mayank Agarwal is set to open the innings but there is a question mark over his partner with the choice being between Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill.

While Shaw was preferred in the New Zealand series, he struggled for consistency in the IPL. Gill, on the other hand, has scored 440 runs for Kolkata Knight Riders and also looked in good touch in the third ODI.

The other option is KL Rahul, who has been in rampaging form and also formed a formidable pair with Mayank for the Kings XI Punjab, but the last time he had played a Test was in September 2019.

In the wicketkeeper’s slot, it will be Wriddhiman Saha versus Rishabh Pant.

For Saha, who had injured both his hamstrings during the IPL, it will be a test to show his fitness after getting back at the nets recently.

Pant has been India’s number one choice in overseas Tests but he was dropped from the limited over series and will have to deliver the goods to seal the keeper’s slot.

With skipper Virat Kohli going on paternity leave after the opening Test and the injured Rohit Sharma too uncertain, the onus will be on Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Hanuma Vihari to show the way.

Rahane, the man likely to lead India in the absence of Kohli, will look for a good outing. Pujara and Vihari too will be itching to go out in the middle having last played a competitive game in the pre-COVID-19 days.

In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the opening T20I, is expected to play the practice match as he looks to get into Test mode.

While Bumrah and Mohammed Shami will share the new ball in the Tests, the third pacer’s spot will be up for grabs and Mohammed Siraj, who looked good in the IPL, will be keen to seal it.

Umesh Yadav, with an experience of 46 Tests, is also an option but he was erratic in the two games that he had played in the IPL.

Ravindra Jadeja has been ruled out of the next two T20I matches after suffering a concussion and it remains to be seen if he is fit for the Tests.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s form will be key if Jadeja is unavailable and it will also open the door for Kuldeep Yadav, who was once proclaimed as India’s number one overseas spinner by coach Ravi Shastri, following his exploits in Sydney last year.

For Australia, the spotlight will be on young William Pucovski as he looks to grab the opener’s slot following an injury to David Warner, who has been ruled of at least the opening Test.

Pucovski’s form in Sheffield Shield triggered a debate with many preferring him over Joe Burns but with Warner’s injury, coach Justin Langer has made it clear the slot will go to one who performs well in the tour games.

While the first three-day game will be a red-ball affair, the second tour match, scheduled to begin from December 11, will be played with a pink ball.

Former Karnataka Minister Roshan Baig gets bail in IMA case

Bengaluru: A special CBI court here on Saturday granted bail to former Karnataka Minister Roshan Baig in the multi-crore I Monetary Advisory (IMA) investment scam.

CBI arrested Baig on November 22 and had conducted raids at his residence the very next day.

The disqualified Congress MLA from Shivajinagar in the city, after the arrest, was produced before the court, which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days.

Baig has been asked by the court to cooperate with the investigation and report before CBI officials on the second and fourth Monday of every month, official sources said.

He also has been asked to surrender his passport, inform the court if he changes address, and not to threaten witnesses, they said.

Baig’s advocate, while citing his health condition, informed the court that his client has cooperated with the investigation and all the accused in the case have been granted bail, barring the MD and CEO of the IMA Group of companies.

The multi-crore ponzi scheme run by Karnataka-based IMA and its group entities allegedly duped over a lakh of people to the tune of Rs 4,000 crore promising higher returns.

The scam came to light in June last year when the IMA operator Mohammed Mansoor Khan fled the country accusing Baig and some government officers of cheating him.

Khan had alleged that Baig had taken about Rs 400 crore from him, which the latter had rejected outright.

Khan came to India after much persuasion by the police and surrendered.

The then Congress and JD(S) coalition government had formed a special investigation team to probe the matter.

However, the BJP government after coming to power handed over the case to the CBI.

The CBI had named an IAS officer, two IPS officers, a KAS officer, and a corporator among the accused in the case.

The state government gave permission to the Central agency to prosecute them.

Mangaluru: Two arrested in graffiti wall writings case; Police Commissioner calls it publicity stunt

December 6, 2020 by Nasheman

Mangaluru: City Police on Saturday arrested two people in connection with objectionable graffiti writings on walls case. Pro-terrorist writings were found in two different places in the city last month.

The arrested accused have been identified as Mohammed Shariq (32) and Maaz Muneer Ahmed (22), both residents of Thirtahalli in Shimoga district. Police on Saturday added that Shariq was working at his father’s clothes shop at his native while Maaz is a third-year engineering student at a private college in Mangaluru.

In a press conference held at the Police Commissioner’s office after the arrest of the accused, Mangaluru Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar added that the writings were a publicity stunt by the two accused and that no links of the accused were found with any organisations so far.

The police, Vikas said will seek police custody of the accused to further investigate the case.

Vikas Kumar also lauded the several police teams that worked to crack the case. He congratulated the teams led by DCP Vinay Gaonkar and other police officials that cracked the case and arrested the accused.

On being asked if there were more people involved with the accused, Vikas said that will be revealed during the further course of investigations.

Petrol price at 2-yr high of Rs 83 per litre, diesel at 73.32

Petrol price at 2-yr high of Rs 83 per litre, diesel at 73.32

New Delhi: Petrol price on Saturday breached the Rs 83 per litre-mark in Delhi for the first time in more than two years after a rally in international oil prices forced the 13th increase in rates in the last fortnight.

Petrol price on Saturday was raised by 27 paise per litre and diesel by 25 paise, according to a price notification of oil marketing companies.

Petrol price in Delhi rose to Rs 83.13 per litre from Rs 82.86. Diesel rates went up from Rs 73.07 to Rs 73.32 per litre.

This is the highest rate for petrol and diesel since September 2018 and followed the 13th increase in rates since November 20 when oil companies resumed daily price revision after nearly a two-month hiatus.

In 16 days, the petrol price has gone up by Rs 2.07 per litre and diesel rate has risen by Rs 2.86.

ICICI Securities said vaccine hopes are driving oil prices up.

Brent crude oil is up 34 percent from lows in end-October 2020 driven by the hope that COVID-19 vaccines would lead to demand recovery.

“The oil price surge is despite a second wave of Covid in Europe and US (which has led to demand recovery reversal), and surge in Libyan oil output from 0.1 million barrels per day (BPD) to 1.25 million BPD,” it said.

Oil cartel OPEC plus its allies like Russia, (called OPEC+), deciding to raise output from January 2021 more modestly than earlier agreed is likely to ensure global supply deficit even in the first quarter of 2021. “Thus, OPEC+ has done its part to prevent supply surplus until the vaccine boosts demand,” it added.

Brent has risen from USD 36.9 per barrel on October 30 to USD 49.5 on December 4.

IEA estimates the global oil supply deficit at 2.1-2.8 million BPD in Q3-Q4 calendar year 2020. However, a surplus of 0.4 million was likely in Q1 2021 if OPEC+, as agreed in April 2020, was to prune output cuts from 7.7 million BPD to 5.8 million BPD from January.

“However, we now estimate supply deficit of 0.5 million BPD in Q1 2021 and 0.2-2.8 million BPD in Q2-Q4 as OPEC+ has decided to raise output by just 0.5 million BPD in January 2021 and by not more than 0.5 million BPD in later months and only after deliberations,” ICICI Securities said.

Prior to the November 20 hike in rates in India, petrol prices had been static since September 22, and diesel rates hadn’t changed since October 2.

Public sector oil marketing companies – Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) – revise rates of petrol and diesel daily based on benchmark international oil price and foreign exchange rate.

They had, however, resorted to calibrating the rates since the pandemic broke out with a view to avoiding volatility in retail prices.

The 58-day hiatus in petrol price revision and 48-day status quo on diesel rates were preceded by no change in rates between June 30 and August 15 and an 85-day status quo between March 17 and June 6.

In Mumbai, the petrol price on Friday was raised to Rs 89.78 per litre from Rs 89.52, while diesel rates went up from Rs 79.66 to Rs 79.93.

Rates vary from state to state depending on the incidence of local sales tax or VAT.

Karnataka HC directs govt to hold Bengaluru municipal elections at the earliest

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Friday ordered the State government to hold the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike elections at the earliest for 198 wards and publish the final notification of reservation of wards within a month.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice of the High Court Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice S Vishwajith Shetty passed the order hearing public interest litigation filed by the former corporators M Shivaraju of Shankar Math Ward and Abdul Wajid and the Karnataka State Election Commission.

The bench directed the government to conduct the municipal elections in Bengaluru at the earliest.

“We direct the State Election Commission to hold election of BBMP as expeditiously as possible by publishing the election program within a maximum period of six weeks from the date on which final reservation notification is published,” the bench said in its order.

It added further that the elections should be held for 198 wards as per the notification of delimitation of wards published on June 23, 2020.

The BBMP elections were supposed to take place before September 10 when the term of the elected body of the municipal corporation came to an end.

The government put the election on hold and appointed senior bureaucrat Gaurav Gupta as an administrator of the BBMP in order to increase the number of wards to 243.

The Karnataka government had even issued a notification on October 14 to increase the number of wards in BBMP.

The court directed the government to hold the elections to the 198 wards at the earliest in view of the fact that the delimitation commission which was recently constituted has not yet submitted its recommendations for dividing the area of the BBMP into 243 wards. The court noted that the delimitation process will take considerable time.

Man charged with attempt to murder for attending Tablighi event; HC says ‘abuse of power’

December 5, 2020 by Nasheman

Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court has observed that the attempt to murder charge slapped against a Mau resident, who participated in the religious congregation organised by the Tablighi Jamaat at New Delhi in March, was reflective of “abuse of the power of law”.

The high court made the observation while staying the proceedings under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code against Mohammad Saad, who was accused of deliberately not informing the local authorities about taking part in the event and avoiding voluntary quarantine upon his return from Delhi.

Justice Ajay Bhanot passed the order while hearing a petition filed by Saad challenging the chargesheet filed against him in the case.

The petitioner pleaded before the court that earlier the chargesheet was filed under sections 269 and 270 of IPC for spreading deadly disease, but later it was recalled and a fresh chargesheet was filed under section 307 of IPC for ‘attempt to murder’.

The court after hearing the concerned parties observed, “From a perusal of the material, charge sheeting the applicant under Section 307 IPC prima facie reflects abuse of the power of law”.

The court also directed the state government, SSP Mau, and the concerned police officer to file their reply in the case.

“C.O. shall also file his personal affidavit indicating as to how the ingredients of Section 307 IPC are made out from the facts in the record from the material collected during the investigation and justify the amendment directed by him to the charge sheet,” the bench directed.

The court fixed December 15 as the next date of hearing in the case.

GHMC polls: TRS emerges as single largest party

December 5, 2020 by Nasheman

Hyderabad, Dec 4: The ruling TRS in Telangana on Friday emerged as the single largest party in the 150-ward Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election, winning 55 wards.

While the election was held for 150 wards, the results of 149 were announced as counting of votes had to be stopped in a ward as per a High Court order.

BJP bagged 48 wards and the AIMIM of Asaduddin Owaisi secured 44.

Congress could win only two wards.

Counting had to be stopped in Neredmet ward as marks other than the standard Swastik symbol (crossed arrow mark) were in majority.

The Telangana High Court on Friday suspended a circular issued by the State Election Commission (SEC), which allows counting of votes with “distinguish marks” other than the standard Swastik symbol (crossed arrow mark) for the GHMC polls held on December 1.

Hearing a House Motion, Justice Abhishek Reddy, while suspending the SEC’s circular, said the ballots which have “distinguish marks” should be kept separately and if they are detrimental to the poll results, the outcome should not be announced.

Though the ruling TRS emerged as the single largest party, the mayoral election depends on the votes that include co-option members such as MLAs, MLCs and MPs belonging to the GHMC area, besides 150 elected members.

Charge sheet filed against Arnab Goswami in 2018 suicide case

Charge sheet filed against Arnab Goswami in 2018 suicide case

Mumbai, Dec 4: The police on Friday filed a charge sheet against Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and two others in a 2018 abetment of suicide case.

The charge sheet was filed before a court in Alibaug in neighbouring Raigad district, where the case for alleged abetment of suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud has been registered.

Besides Goswami, the other two accused named in the charge sheet are Firoze Sheikh and Nitish Sarda, said special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat.

The trio has been charged under IPC sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 109 (punishment for abetment)and 34 (act done by several people in furtherance of common intention).

As many as 65 persons are named as witnesses in the charge sheet that runs into 1,914 pages.

Prosecution sources said that it relies on purported suicide noteas the `dying declaration’.

Naik’s handwriting has been matched with the writing in the suicide note and forensic report indicated that he was not under pressure while writing it, sources added.

Six statements recorded before a magistrate under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure are also part of the charge sheet. Such statements can be used as evidence during trial.

Incidentally, Goswami had moved the Bombay High Court on Thursday seeking a stay to the filing of charge sheet, but the petition is yet to be heard.

Goswami, Sheikh and Sarda were arrested by Alibaug police on November 4 in the case, but they got bail from the Supreme Court on November 11.

Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud committed suicide in 2018, allegedly because of non-payment of dues by firms of Goswami and other two accused.

The case, closed for want of evidence in 2019, was reopened in May this year, with Goswami alleging that the Maharashtra government was pursuing a vendetta against him for his work as a TV journalist.
