Confident of BJP's victory in Sira and RR Nagar bypolls: Yediyurappa

Shivamogga: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Sunday exuded confidence about the BJP’s victory in Sira and Rajarajeshwari Nagar assembly bypolls to be held on November 3.

“We are 100 percent sure about the victory of the BJP candidates. Our only concern is how to widen the victory margin,” Yediyurappa told reporters here.

Noting that his son and BJP state vice president B Y Vijayendra has been camping in Sira for the past three days, leading the election campaign there, he said he was confident that the party’s prospects were bright in the assembly segment.

During the 2018 assembly elections, the BJP had lost in both the constituencies.

On the rains in the state, the Chief Minister said the people of Malnad region were expecting a good harvest this time due to adequate rains while in North Karnataka, the downpour and floods have caused damage to the standing crop.

Yediyurappa said the distribution of compensation to the people in rain-affected areas has begun.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi too has assured adequate relief to the flood-hit people of the state, he added.

Indian democracy passing through its ‘most difficult phase’: Sonia Gandhi

Indian democracy passing through its 'most difficult phase': Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi Sunday launched a scathing attack on the government over the three farm laws, the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic slowdown, and alleged atrocities against Dalits while claiming that Indian democracy is passing through its “most difficult phase”.

A “conspiracy” has been hatched to defeat the gains of the green revolution’, she alleged, slamming the government over the three “anti-agriculture black laws.

Addressing a meeting of AICC general secretaries and state-in-charges which she presided over, Gandhi also alleged that the country was being ruled by a government that was “systematically” handing over the rights of citizens to a handful of crony capitalists.

This was the first meeting of general secretaries and state in-charges Sonia Gandhi chaired after a major organizational reshuffle last month.

Hitting out at the government over the recently passed farm laws, she said the BJP-led dispensation has attacked the very foundation of India’s resilient agrarian economy by bringing in “three anti-agriculture black laws”.

“A conspiracy has been hatched to defeat the gains of the green revolution’. Lives and livelihoods of crores of farm laborers, leasehold farmers, small and marginal farmers, toiling laborers, and small shopkeepers are under attack. It is our solemn duty to join hands to defeat this sinister conspiracy,” Gandhi asserted.

The three farm bills — the Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, the Farmer’s (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020 — were passed by Parliament recently. Subsequently, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the bills.

Congress, many other opposition parties, and several farmers organizations have been protesting against these legislations, claiming that these will harm the interests of farmers and benefit corporates, a claim denied by the government. The Centre has asserted that these new laws will be beneficial for farmers and will increase their income.

Alleging that the country’s democracy is passing through its “most difficult phase”, Gandhi claimed there is a “designed attack” on the Constitution and democratic traditions.

The country was pushed into the “abyss” of coronavirus pandemic by “sheer ineptitude” and “mismanagement” of the Modi government, Gandhi alleged in her opening remarks at the meeting.

“All this happened as we witnessed the biggest unplanned and cruel migration of crores of migrant laborers as the government remained a mute spectator to their miseries.

The stark truth is that a prime minister who promised to defeat corona within 21 days has abdicated his and his government’s responsibility towards the citizens,” Gandhi said.

There is neither a plan nor strategic thinking, solution, or a way ahead in the fight against the pandemic, she alleged in her address in Hindi.

Gandhi claimed that the government has simultaneously “demolished” the economy, built painstakingly by the hard work of fellow Indians, and the vision of successive Congress governments.

“Never has the country witnessed such a free-fall in GDP as also all other economic indices. Today, the young have no jobs. Nearly 14 crore jobs have been lost. Small and medium businesses, small shopkeepers and other small enterprises are shutting at an unprecedented pace, yet an uncaring government remains a mute spectator,” the Congress president said.

She also accused the government of failing to honour even its Constitutional responsibilities, saying the share of GST compensation is being denied to states.

“How will the state governments help our people, if the government of India was to renege on its Constitutional obligations? This must be a first example of economic anarchy being spread by the central government,” Gandhi said.

Alleging that atrocities against Dalits have reached a “new zenith”, she said that instead of honouring the law and granting adequate protection to India’s daughters, BJP governments are siding with criminals.

“The voice of oppressed families is being suppressed by the agencies of the state. Is this the new Raj Dharma’?” Gandhi asked.

She exhorted the general secretaries and state in-charges to take on these challenges and stand with the people, saying this is what defines the Congress organization.

“I am confident that all of you would toil hard and stand up to the forces attacking India and its people. Let us join hands to defeat the anti-democracy and autocratic designs of the ruling BJP,” she said.

“Persistent and determined struggle for the cause of people is the heart and soul of the Indian National Congress. Even today, dedicated service of fellow citizens and determined fight against the injustice, inequity, and discrimination in all spheres is the guiding light for every Congress men and women,” Gandhi said.

Ballia firing: Nadda cracks whip, directs controversial UP BJP MLA Surendra Singh to stay away from probe

October 19, 2020 by Nasheman

This comes a day after the MLA met Swatantra Dev Singh in Lucknow after being summoned over his statements in connection with the incident in which a man had died after gunfire.

NEW DELHI: The central leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday stepped in and cracked the whip against MLA Surendra Singh over his statements regarding the firing incident in Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh.

BJP National President JP Nadda has asked party’s Uttar Pradesh chief Swatantra Dev Singh to convey it to the MLA to stay away from the probe, sources said.

This comes a day after the MLA met Swatantra Dev Singh in Lucknow after being summoned over his statements in connection with the Ballia incident in which a man had died after bullets were fired during a meeting for allotment of shops under government quota, in Durjanpur village.

“BJP National President JP Nadda spoke with UP BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh, expressing his displeasure over statements of MLA Surendra Singh regarding Ballia incident. He asked the party’s UP chief to convey it to MLA Surendra Singh to stay away from the probe.

On October 16, a day after a local BJP leader Dhirendra Pratap Singh in Ballia district allegedly shot dead the man, BJP MLA Surendra Singh condemned the “one-sided” investigation of the administration.

“The incident is upsetting. It should not have taken place but I condemn the one-sided investigation of the administration. Nobody is looking at the pain of six women who have been injured in the incident. Dhirendra Singh fired in self-defence,” Surendra had said.

“How can I deny that he is my close associate? Not only mine, but he is also a close associate of BJP as his family votes for us and he worked for us in polls. Everyone who votes for us is a close associate. But I decry the incident and administration’s one-sided probe,” he had added.

The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) arrested the main accused Dhirendra Pratap from Lucknow in connection with the Ballia firing case.

They have so far visited Kalaburagi, Dharwad; expected to meet officials of health dept

BENGALURU, NEW DELHI: Taking note of the spiralling number of Covid-19 cases in Karnataka, the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has sent a team of experts to review the state government’s management of the pandemic. A team comprising a Joint Secretary, a public health expert and one clinician was rushed to Karnataka by the Centre. The team has so far visited Kalaburgi and Dharwad for field review and is expected to meet officials of the State Health Department on Saturday. In a statement released on Friday morning, the Union Health Ministry said that high-level teams have been deputed to Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, which are reporting a surge in new Covid-19 cases of late.

“Teams will support the state efforts towards strengthening containment, surveillance, testing, infection prevention and control measures, and efficient clinical management of the positive cases. The central teams shall also guide in effectively managing the challenges related to timely diagnosis and follow-up,” the statement said.

Officials of the State Health Department said the team is expected to review Karnataka’s model of Covid-19 management and give suggestions, but there is unlikely to be any interference or supervision. Given Wednesday’s number of total cases — 7,43,848 — in Karnataka, the Union Health Ministry said the state accounted for 10.1% of the national figure. “It has 11,010 cases per million population. The tests per million population is 53,518 in Kerala, 38,605 in Rajasthan, 37,872  in West Bengal and 50,191 in Chhattisgarh, lending credence to the State Government’s stance that a major contributor to the spike in the number of cases is extensive testing.

As of now, the total cases in Kerala are 3,17,929, which account for 4.3% of the total cases while the active cases are 94,609, comprising 11.8% of the total national figure.
