No lockdown, no change in status quo, says BSY

March 16, 2021 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday laid all speculation over another lockdown or night curfews in Karnataka to rest, insisting that no decision has been taken. He said that the status quo will continue in Karnataka for another week and any decision will be arrived at only after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s video-conference with Chief Ministers on March 17.

With cases on the rise in Karnataka, the technical advisory committee on Covid-19 at a meeting on Monday informed the chief minister that the surge could be a precursor to the second wave of infections in the State and measures needed to be taken immediately to control its spread. “The technical committee emphasised that Covid preventive measures and safety protocols need to be followed. Masks and social distancing are mandatory.

Awareness among people has worn off and if this continues, we will be compelled to take action. We will have to restart slapping fines on people for not wearing masks. For now, there will be no lockdown or night curfew or restriction of any kind, but people have to cooperate with the government,” Yediyurappa said, adding that his government will study the situation for another week and then take a decision on reviewing the interstate travel regulation. He said that along with the vaccination drive, tracing and tracking mechanisms will also be revived and shopkeepers, bus drivers and conductors etc with symptoms will be tested on priority.

“Travellers from Maharashtra and Kerala will be monitored closely. They have to carry RT-PCR report. There will be no change in the status of schools, businesses or hotels. If people want to ensure that the economic activity continues to bloom in Karnataka and avoid a lockdown, then they must be responsible,” the CM added. The government has also asked private hospitals to accommodate Covid patients and treat them like earlier.

Modi will hold a video-conference with chief ministers on March 17 — almost a year after the ‘Janata Curfew’. Government sources said that Karnataka is set to lobby for lowering the vaccination age limit and extend it to a larger group of citizens. “All other decisions will be taken after the video-conference with the Prime Minister,” Yediyurappa added.

BENGALURU: Although the number of Covid-19 cases are much lower than the peak in September-October last year, the gradual rise in infections has the state government worried. From around 7,300 active cases at the end of January, the number has risen to around 8,860 in mid-March.For the past three days, the state has been seeing over 900 new infections a day. Sunday saw 932 new cases, Saturday saw 934 and Friday 921.

Bengaluru alone saw 550 cases, slightly over half of the state’s 932 cases on Monday. However, this is lower than 628 and 630 recorded in the previous two days. Bengaluru Urban district has the highest number of cases. Bengaluru city has had 4,11,989 total positive cases so far with 4,01,010 recoveries.
Bengaluru Urban has 6,454 active cases, while the number was 4,376 on on January 23. The city saw five deaths on Monday.

Dakshina Kannada district had the second-highest number of new cases at 65, followed by Mysuru (46), Tumakuru (40) and Kalaburagi (43).Experts said that the cluster cases in Bengaluru need to be addressed.
“Apart from checking for RT-PCR negative certificates at Kerala and Maharashtra borders, Karnataka should also carry out testing at wedding halls, cinema halls, parks, schools and colleges.

This will help identify cases easily, be it symptomatic or asymptomatic, and thereby tracing the contacts in a 1:20 ratio,” a health department official said.Karnataka has the third-highest number of total infections in the country after Maharashtra and Kerala. In terms of active cases too, Karnataka had 8,860 as on Monday, while Maharashtra and Kerala have around 1.3 lakh and 29,000 respectively.

RSS arm to pick new chief at Bengaluru meet

March 16, 2021 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: A nine-decade-old tradition is set to be broken. The Akhila Bharatiya Prathinidi Sabha (ABPS), the highest decision-making body of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is holding its election year meeting in Bengaluru on March 19 and 20. Until now, election year meetings were held every three years in Nagpur, the RSS headquarters.

The ABPS, headed by Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi, has traditionally preferred Nagpur as the venue for the election, but due to the lockdown and spike in Covid cases in Maharashtra, the meet has been shifted to Bengaluru. It was at the 2009 ABPS meeting in Nagpur that Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi was first elected, followed by a win in 2012, again in Nagpur, and was re-elected in 2015 and 2018 for a third and fourth term in the same city. This year, the ‘city of oranges’ was again the favourite, but the lockdown put paid to the plan to hold the ABPS session there,” said a senior RSS functionary.

The election of the general-secretary or Sarkaryavah is being held in Bengaluru for the first time in the history of the organisation. Joshi completes 12 years, and whether he will seek re-election is left to him and the Sangh leadership, the functionary said. If he continues, the 72-year-old Joshi will get another term till 2024, but if he prefers to step down, there are six people waiting to join the race — Dattatreya Hosabale, V Bhagaiah, Suresh Soni, Krishna Gopal, Manmohan Vaidya and Mukunda CR. If there is more than one contestant, the matter will come up for election. Under organisational rules, anyone can participate, provided they hold an Akhila Bharata position.

The election is left to the Sangh leadership. The electoral college of about 500 members participates in voting, and consists of 11 divisional heads of the RSS, besides elected representatives from all states. The number has been reduced from 1,500 to 500, keeping Covid-19 in mind. Due to this, others from the states will be participating virtually.

Among the issues that will come up for discussion are RSS camps, which are normally held in April or May every year. Last year, many of them were cancelled because of Covid, and this year, they will take stock whether physical camps can be held.  CM BS Yediyurappa and his officials are expected to visit the place on Tuesday to oversee the arrangements and meet important RSS functionaries before the meeting commences this weekend.
