Kejriwal to hold meeting to review COVID situation in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will review the COVID-19 situation in the national capital in a meeting on Monday noon, officials said.

The chief minister termed the situation “very serious” and appealed to people not to step out of houses unless it was urgent.

The officials said the review meeting to be held at 12 pm is likely to be attended by ministers and top officers of the Delhi government.

According a bulletin issued by the department on Sunday, 48 new fatalities were also recorded, pushing the death toll to 11,283.

The fresh cases came out of the record over 1.14 lakh tests conducted the previous day, the bulletin said, adding that the positivity rate stood at 9.43 per cent.

The previous highest single-day spike in Delhi — 8,593 cases — was reported on November 11 last year, while on November 19, the city recorded 131 COVID-19 deaths, the highest single-day fatality count till date.

Delhi recorded 7,897 COVID-19 cases on Saturday, while 39 more people died due to the coronavirus infection.

The positivity rate had also mounted to 10.21 per cent, breaching the 10-per cent mark for the first time this year.

The positivity rate was above 15 per cent in mid-November last year.

On Friday, 8,521 COVID-19 cases and 39 deaths were recorded in the national capital.

This was also the first time that more than 8,000 cases were recorded in a day this year amid a massive spike in cases over the last few weeks.

On Thursday, the city recorded 7,437 cases.

It was also the first time that over 7,000 cases were reported in a day this year.

On the two preceding days, the number of cases stood above 5,000.

On November 27 last year, the city recorded 5,482 cases.

It registered 6,224 cases on November 24 and 7,486 on November 18, according to official data.

A total of 1,14,288 tests, including 76,954 RT-PCR tests and 37,334 rapid antigen tests, were conducted on Saturday, according to the latest health bulletin.

The total number cases stood at 7,25,197 on Sunday and over 6.

79 lakh patients have recovered from the virus.

The number of active cases rose to 34,341 from 28,773 a day before.

The number of people under home isolation increased to 17,093 from 15,266 on Saturday while the number of containment zones mounted to 5,705 from 5,236, the bulletin said.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain had warned on Wednesday that the new cases “could surpass” the previous single-day record registered in November, given the pace of the infection spread.

On Sunday, he held a meeting on COVID-19 preparedness.

BBMP Commissioner dismisses BBMP staff for destroying Covid19 Swab

Two BBMP contract employees dismissed after they found destroying Covid19 Swab and manipulating corona testing kit to reach the target.

The accused has been identified as mohan and Nagaraj were dismissed by BBMP Commissioner,Gaurav Gupta after the video of the staff destroying Covid19 Swab went viral in various social media platforms taking a serious note and after collecting report from the concerned officer Gaurav Gupta dismissed two BBMP staff for destroying Covid19 Swab and ordered for a legal action against those involved in this manipulating practice.

Dr.Premanand BR,Administrative officer, City primary health centre, in his complaint identified the staffer as Hemanth and Nagaraj.

The duo was working in the centre for the last 10 months as corona swab collector.

They were caught in the mobile camera putting random swab testing sticks into VTM vial without taking samples and testing.

There are four others also heard talking who were later identified as Asha workers kusuma,Prema and Padma and hospital staff Ashok.

The incident occurred when Dr.Premanand had gone out who has stated in his complaint.

The police are now on the lookout for Hemanth and Nagaraj to question them.

Kodigehalli police have filed FIR against the duo charging them under section 177 providing false information and criminal breach of trust against them and further investigation is on.

Double Murder: Elderly woman and her son’s friend stabbed to death in Bengaluru

A 75 year old woman and her son’s friend were found murdered at the house they were living in JP Nagar 7th stage in the wee hours of Thursday.

Police suspect that the murder is for gain and committed by known person.

The deceased has been identified as Mamatha Basu,75,from West Bengal and Debrath Behara,44,who had come to the city a few days ago and stayed with Mamtha since she was staying alone at the rented house.

Senior police officers including the city police commissioner Kamal Pant,visited the spot and supervised the investigations.

Senior officer told media persons that,The murder came to light when the domestic help on Thursday morning visited the house and found the door opened.

He later found Behara lying in the pool of blood and Mamatha at the bedroom with stab injuries.

He alerted the police,and the dog squad and Forensic Science Laboratory team inspected the crime scene. 

The Puttenahalli police rushed to the spot and conducted investigations.The house was ransacked gold cash along with CCTV cameras  and DVRs have been robbed.

Primarily investigations revealed that the assailants are known to the deceased since there was no forced entry.

The body of Basu was found on a bed while Behra’s body was found on the floor of another room.He seemed to have attempted escaping from the assailants when he was targeted.Both were stabbed to death and their bodies were lying in a pool of blood. 

During investigation it was found Mamatha’s son Devdeep Basu stayed with his family close to the house of his mother and used to visit her frequently.On Wednesday he visited the duo and returned home after dinner.

Usually Mamatha would open the door only after confirming the visitor at the CCTV camera installed outside the house, we have some clues on the assailants and working on them to track down the accused,he said.

Mother strangulated 3 year old daughter for Trivial row arrested by police

The West Division police of Annapurneshwari Nagar police have Arrested a woman on charges of strangulating her 3 year old daughter over trivial row.

The accused has been identified as,Sudha resident of malathahalli,

Upset over her three year old daughter always taking side of her father,mother strangled three year old daughter and dumped her body in an underconstruction house in Annapoorneshwari nagar  before searching for her with husband and  filing missing complaint on Tuesday

Senior officer told reporters,A murder came to light when the police team who were on rounds near Deepa Complex noticed a body dumped the cops recovered the body of girl from an underconstruction house with legature marks around her neck.

As soon as the body was found the Annapurneshwari Nagar police inspector and his team rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.

Senior officers,as, DCP West,Dr Sanjeev M Patil, ACP,UD Krishna Kumar with crime staff and sniffer dog with finger print experts rushed to the spot and after Inspecting the crime spot the team swung into action.

The police team analysed CCTV footage during the probe and got vital clues.

Based on the clue the team called the deceased mother for questioning when our team questioned the mother of the deceased where was she when her child went missing she said that she went to chat centre.

However police found during the course of Investigation that she did not visited the chat centre instead found walking with the child in the adjacent area.

The team found Sudha was lying and questioned her led to confess the crime.

The accused Sudha was arrested by police after they realized that she is acting suspecious and lied to the police that she had gone to a chat centre near by with the daughter from where she went missing.

The accused said,on Tuesday,the couple returned and Eeranna as usual switched on the TV to watch news for which Sudha objected.

The girl took side of her father and shouted at her mother to keep quite and not to fight with dad.Enraged by this,Sudha on tuesday evening took the girl out late in the evening and strangulated her to death and dumped her body near Deepa Complex in a under construction building.

Erranaa returned from work and found the door locked and called Sudha on her mobile.Sudha said that she had come to get snacks for the girl and she was missing.

Worried Eeranna with friends and Sudha searched for the girl before filing a complaint with the Jnanabharati police he added.

Couple used to work in different shops.

While Eeranna worked at a private firm Sudha would work as housekeeping staff at granite shop.She would take the child to work and return in the afternoon to serve lunch for Eeranna.

The Annapurneshwari Nagar police have arrested the accused and a case has been taken up and are further investigation to ascertain if there are other reasons for the murder he added.

Finally Bengaluru Police Commissioner,Kamal Pant has appreciated Addl CP West,Soumendhu Mukherjee,DCP West,Dr Sanjeev M Patil,ACP UD Krishna Kumar,PI,Lohit BN, PSI, Rajashekaraiah and his team for the excellent investigation and solving the case within hours of the crime a suitable reward will be given to the whole team for the exemplary work done by them he added.

International diver ends life

International diver and ekalavya awardee Shilpa Balaraju,GB,40,ends life by commiting suicide at her house in Jayanagar 5th block on Friday night.

The incident came to light when her husband,a choreographer,returned late in the night.The couple did not have any children.

Shilpa left behind a suicide note which is being probed by the police.

A Ekalavya awardee and Asian Medalist in Diving and NIS qualified Coach had more than 10 years experience was working as coach at an international school in the city.But was terminated last year due to covid since then she was jobless.

She approached the school authorities to reconsider to take her to job but its rejected.She wrote a death note that she was not having any Job from last year and had financial crisis.

Shilpa had lost her parents,both sports persons, few months ago and was depressed.

She had even approached the Karnataka swimming Association seeking help.The committee had decided to induct her since she had sought status,Gopal B Hosur,President of the association,said reporters.

Intial probe by the police revealed that she is under depression.However sports persons who are trained to handle tough situation of accept defeat and victory graciously, taking such steps are not acceptable,Mr.Hosur,said.

The police are awaiting PM report to rule out any foul play and probing further to ascertain the reason behind the extreme step.

Hindu Munnani functionary, Muslim youth assaulted in Coimbatore, security upped in city

COIMBATORE: Tension prevailed in the city after a Hindu Munnani (HM) functionary was allegedly assaulted by two unidentified men on Saturday night. Soon after the incident, three Muslim youth were attacked in front of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where the injured man was being treated. Police beefed up security in the city and six special teams were formed to investigate both incidents. 

A few locals admitted Ramakrishnan, who sustained grievous injuries, to the CMCH. On his complaint, Podanur police registered a case under Section 307 (Attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

Meanwhile, many Hindu Munnani supporters picketed the hospital demanding action against the miscreants. Police held talks with the functionaries and assured action, however, a few of them allegedly assaulted three Muslim youth crossing the hospital on their bikes.

A release from the Popular Front of India on Sunday claimed that the trio’s bikes were damaged in retaliation to the assault on Ramakrishnan. The police registered a case and deployed over 300 police personnel at major junctions, including at CMCH, to prevent any untoward incident. They also intensified vehicle checks and night patrolling. 

“Surveillance has been stepped up across the city. We have recovered CCTV camera footage from the crime scene and the special teams are tracing the miscreants. Only an investigation will reveal if it was a communal issue,” said City Police Commissioner S Davidson Devasirvatham. 

HM State President Kadeswara C Subramaniam and BJP Mahila Morcha President Vanathi Srinivasan called on Ramakrishnan at the hospital. On Sunday, HM cadre staged a protest in front of the Collectorate, before later withdrawing it. They also submitted a petition at the Commissioner’s office.

UP schools shut till April 30 as state reports record 15,353 COVID-19 cases

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday ordered the closure of all schools till April 30, on a day the state reported its highest single-day spike of coronavirus cases since the outbreak of the pandemic last year.

The coaching centres will also remain closed during the period.

All government and private schools will remain closed till April 30 while pre-scheduled examinations can be held, the statement said.

The government has directed that occupancy at any indoor programme should be not be more than 50 per cent of the capacity of the venue or a maximum of 50 people.

The government said not more than 100 people be allowed to assemble at an open space for any event.

The authorities have also prohibited the distribution of “prasad” at religious places while the retail shops will open from 7 am to 7 pm in the state.

Stressing the need to focus on the “test, trace and treat” approach, the government said the daily count of RT-PCR tests should be taken to one lakh.

Tracing of at least 30-35 persons who have come in contact with a COVID-19 patient should be done, the orders said.

The fresh directions came in the aftermath of a spike in coronavirus cases with the authorities imposing a night curfew in Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Allahabad, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Muzaffarnagar districts and the Lucknow civic body area.

Earlier on April 2, the UP government had extended till April 11 the closure of all schools for students of Classes 1 to 8.

On Sunday, the state reported its highest single-day spike of 15,353 cases till now.

With 67 fresh deaths, the death toll too have reached 9,152 in the state, which has reported 6,92,015 cases since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Lucknow reported the maximum 4,444 cases, followed by 1,740 in Varanasi, 1,565 in Allahabad and 881 in Kanpur, the UP government said in another statement.

Of the fresh deaths, state capital Lucknow reported the highest 31, followed by nine in Allahabad, eight in Kanpur, two each in Gorakhpur, Muzaffarnagar and Chandauli and one each in Varanasi, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Ballia, Ayodhya, Lakhimpur-Khiri, Jaunpur, Deoria, Rae Bareli, Ghazipur, Rampur, Basti and Kannauj.

The count of active COVID-19 cases in the state stands at 71,241, the statement said.

So far, 6,11,622 COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered from the disease.

Meanwhile, the UP chief minister said an effective COVID-19 vaccination drive should be carried out as a four-day “Tika Utsav” that began in the state on Sunday.

The four-day vaccination programme, which began on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotibha Phule, will continue till April 14, the birth anniversary of B R Ambedkar.

COVID-19 Update India records highest daily rise with over 1.68 lakh new cases, 904 die

NEW DELHI: India hit a new coronavirus infection record with 1,68,912 new cases, the highest single-day rise so far, taking the total tally of cases to 1,35,27,717, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday.

The active cases have surpassed the 12-lakh mark, while the death toll increased to 1,70,179 with 904 daily new fatalities, the highest since October 18, 2020, the data updated at 8 am showed.

Registering a steady increase for the 33rd day in row, the active cases have increased to 12,01,009 comprising 8.88 per cent of the total infections, while the recovery rate has further dropped to 89.86 per cent.

The active caseload was at its lowest at  1, 35,926 on February 12 and it was at its highest at 10,17,754 on September 18, 2020.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,21,56,529, while the case fatality rate has further dropped to 1.26 per cent, the data stated.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.

It went past  60 lakh on September 28,  70 lakh on  October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.

According to the ICMR, 25,78,06,986 samples have been tested up to April 11 with 11,80,136 samples being tested on Sunday.

The 904 new fatalities include 349 from Maharashtra, 122 from Chhattisgarh, 67 from Uttar Pradesh, 59 from Punjab, 54from Gujarat, 48 from Delhi, 40 from Karnataka, 24 from Madhya Pradesh, 22 from Tamil Nadu, 21 from Jharkhand, 16 each  from Kerala and Haryana and 10 each from Rajasthan and West Bengal.

A total of 1,70,179 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 57,987 from Maharashtra, 12,908 from Tamil Nadu, 12,889 from Karnataka, 11,283 from Delhi, 10,400 from West Bengal, 9,152 from Uttar Pradesh, 7,507 from Punjab and 7,300 from Andhra Pradesh.
