Karimganj (Assam): Violence broke out in Karimganj district of Assam on Thursday night after a mob spotted a BJP candidate’s vehicle being used to take a polled EVM to the strong room, forcing the police to fire in the air to bring the situation under control.

The vehicle of the polling party of Indira MV School in the Ratabari constituency broke down on their way to the strong room in Karimganj town, officials said on Friday morning.

“They took a lift in a private vehicle. Incidentally, the vehicle was registered under the name of sitting BJP MLA from Patharkandi Krishnendu Paul. When it reached Nimal Bazar area, some public spotted it,” an official of the district administration said.

Paul is also the BJP candidate from the seat this time.

The mob, mostly consisting of AIUDF and Congress supporters, vandalised the vehicle, upon which the polling party ran away, leaving behind the EVMs, eyewitnesses said.

“The Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police reached the spot immediately and they tried to pacify the mob.

But the crowd did not listen, forcing the police to fire in the air to disperse them,” police sources said.

The DC and the SP then brought the EVMs to Patharkandi police station at night, from where it was taken and deposited at the strong room in Karimganj town, they added.

Ratabari and Patharkandi constituencies went for polls in the second phase on Thursday.

Never said Sharad Pawar should replace Sonia Gandhi as UPA chairperson: Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut

April 2, 2021 by Nasheman

Mumbai, Apr 1: Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Thursday claimed he never said that Congress chief Sonia Gandhi should be replaced by NCP president Sharad Pawar as the UPA chairperson, and added that he had only underscored the need to strengthen the alliance.

He said that all the opposition parties need to come together to form a strong alliance at the national level.

His remarks come in the wake of Maharashtra Congress leaders criticising him for his suggestion that Pawar should take over as United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson.

“I have never said Sonia Gandhi should be replaced by Sharad Pawar as UPA chairperson. There is a need to strengthen the UPA for the sake of the country. I just said there is a need to strengthen the opposition alliance. I haven’t criticised Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi,” Raut said.

“I fact, I have stood up for them whenever they were targeted by the political rivals,” he told a television channel, when asked about the Congress leaders’ criticism over his recent remarks.

On being asked about his “accidental home minister” comment against Anil Deshmukh, Raut said, “Something happening by accident is a phrase. One always sees an opportunity in an accident.”

To a question on Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s remarks that nobody should play spoilsport in a coalition government, the Rajya Sabha member said, “People have played spoilsport by taking oath early morning.”

He was referring to Ajit Pawar’s early morning swearing-in with Devendra Fadnavis before the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government after the 2019 Assembly polls. Fadnavis and Pawar had taken oath as the chief minister and deputy chief minister respectively. However, their government had lasted for only 80 hours.

Replying to a question whether the Shiv Sena would join the UPA or go back to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Raut said his party does not play politics of convenience.

“Our alliance with Congress and NCP here was need of the hour since we felt we were cheated by the BJP,” he said.

Raut hit out at Maharashtra Governor B S Koshyari for taking no decision on nominating 12 members from his quota to the state legislative council.

“The governor doesn’t want the MVA to increase its strength in the Legislative Council. He feels the government will not last. But the MVA is strong and will last its full term,” he said.

Maharashtra Covid patient dies hours after ‘dharna’ with oxygen mask

April 2, 2021 by Nasheman

This report was first published in NDTV

Mumbai: A 38-year-old coronavirus patient who had to sit on a protest outside the municipal corporation in Maharashtra’s Nashik after allegedly being turned back by a number of hospitals died just after midnight on Thursday.

Babasaheb Kole was seen on a ‘dharna‘, wearing an oxygen mask connected to a cylinder, last evening outside the civic body’s headquarters.

After about an hour, an ambulance from the corporation took him to the municipal hospital.

According to his family, at around midnight, his oxygen level went close to 40 per cent. A normal level of oxygen is usually 95 per cent or higher.

Babasaheb died around 1 am in the night.

“Two-three days back he was taken to Bytco (Hospital). From there, he went to another hospital, from there to the government medical college. Medical College said no bed. We went to a lot of hospitals. Nobody admitted him. Then we came back to civil (hospital) and got oxygen for him and put him on it. Nobody heard us,” his distraught wife told local journalists.

The police and the corporation say they have launched an investigation to find out who “instigated” the patient to picket the municipal building.

Maharashtra is struggling with a fresh wave of coronavirus infections that have pushed the state’s health infrastructure to the edge in many places.

The state reported nearly 40,000 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, its second-highest single-day rise in infection tally since the pandemic began, a health official said.

The new wave in the state, home to the country’s financial capital Mumbai, have driven a surge in India’s caseload that currently stands at 1.22 crore, behind only the US and Brazil.

‘Sex CD case’: Woman’s father approaches Karnataka HC

April 2, 2021 by Nasheman

Bengaluru,: The father of the woman, said to be featured in the ‘sex video’ allegedly involving former minister Ramesh Jarkiholi, has approached the Karnataka High Court questioning the police recording his daughter’s statement.

The father said in his petition that his daughter was a victim of circumstances and politics and her indecent video was aired by various media.

He said he contacted her only to realise that she has been victimised and was under tremendous pressure.

Stating that he had lodged a police complaint that his daughter was kidnapped by unknown influential people in Belagavi,he said his daughter too lodged a plaint with police.

“In the course of investigation, the petitioner has learnt that the statement of his daughter is recorded under section 164 of the CrPC … throwing all legal norms to the winds,” the petition said.

He argued that recording statement under section 164 of the CrPC was not only violative of the mandatory requirements of the said provision,it is also violative of Article 21 of the Constitution of India (protection of life and personal liberty).

Meanwhile, police sources said the woman’s family shifted from Belagavi to Vijayapura and demanded her safety.

In Bengaluru, the police visited a few spots, which were said to be places where the objectionable videos were shot.

BJP disapproves Eshwarappa's complaint to Guv against Karnataka CM Yediyurappa

Bengaluru,: The BJP and a group of ministers on Thursday said senior party leader K S Eshwarappa’s act of complaining to the Karnataka Governor against Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, alleging direct interference in the affairs of his department, was ‘not right’.

The Ministers along with some party legislators, strongly backed the CM, who is yet to break his silence on the issue.

BJP national General Secretary in-charge of Karnataka Arun Singh said Eshwarappa should not have written such a letter, being a senior leader and a Minister.
“If any minister has issues at any point of time, he should talk to the Chief Minister, and this is not the way, by writing a letter to the Governor.”

“If he had any issues he should have spoken to the CM, we will discuss and see (what is to be done)..,” he said as he evaded further questions regarding a similar letter written to him by Eshwarappa.

The Chief Minister is said to be upset with Eshwarappa’s move to complain to the Governor and make the letter public.

Eshwarappa, also a former state BJP president, on Wednesday had complained to the Governor against Yediyurappa alleging direct interference in the affairs of his department.

He had submitted a five-page letter on “serious lapses and authoritarian ways of running the administration” by the CM.

A day after the complaint, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) today released a letter signed by 48 legislators blaming the Rural Development Department under Eshwarappa of blocking works by not giving its approval, despite grants being released.

This even as some senior Ministers in the government and MLAs seen as Yediyurappa loyalists met the CM at his official residence and held discussions.

Pointing out that they had all become ministers under Yediyurappa’s leadership, Revenue Minister R Ashoka said, the matter should have been discussed within and along with the CM.

“This development (of complaining to the Governor) is not good… such things when the government was functioning effectively will cause embarrassment,” he said after meeting the CM.

Noting that despite request from MLAs, the government was not in a position to help by granting more funds as financial situation has taken a hit due to COVID-19, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said as the situation slightly improved the Chief Minister on the request of legislators based on the requirement has released funds.

Eshwarappa should have discussed with Yediyurappa and resolved issues if any, he said.

Administrative matters should be resolved within the government and it was not right to take it to the Governor.

“ours is a disciplined party and the discipline should not be violated…. Eshwarappa should discuss with the CM.”

Health Minister K Sudhakar said Yediyurappa was their top leader chosen by the high command and MLAs, and this development has caused embarrassment to the government and the party.

Averring that the CM has powers and there was nothing wrong in what he did, Sudhakar said Eshwarappa who also a senior leader could have resolved if he had any issues in 5 minutes by discussing with the CM.

Agriculture Minister B C Patil said Eshwarappa is a senior leader and he should be guiding us.

He should have resolved the issue within the cabinet by discussing with the CM, instead of going to the Governor and making it public was not right.

Eshwarappa in his letter to the Governor has listed out instances like the Chief Minister sanctioning huge funds on the request of MLAs to the tune of Rs 774 crore under RDPR Department ignoring him, also works worth Rs 460 crore was sanctioned by bypassing him.

He has also alleged Rs 65 crore was directly sanctioned on the basis of a letter by the Bengaluru Urban zilla panchayat president, who according to him is a “close relative” of Yediyurappa’s family, while pointing out that annual allocation for the Bengaluru Urban zilla panchayat is just Rs 1.17 crore.

Once considered close to each other, the “distance” between Eshwarappa and Yediyurappa have grown over the years.

Ahead of 2018 assembly polls, Eshwarappa had associated himself with the ‘Rayanna Brigade’, which was seen as a move to challenge Yediyurappa’s style of functioning, then as the BJP state President.

Accusing Eshwarappa of embarrassing the government and the party, as done during the assembly polls by organising “Rayanna Brigade”, CM’s political secretary and MLA M P Renukacharya asked, “when people of your stature do such things, against whom should we take disciplinary action?”

A meeting of legislators will be called and they shall meet Arun Singh, BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel, National President J P Nadda, also Prime Minister Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah, he said adding they have records about how much funds was sanctioned to whom.

MLAs A S Patil Nadahalli and Madal Virupakshappa said CM came to their help by sanctioning funds after they brought issues to his notice recently.

Backing Yediyurappa, the MLAs said they stood by him.

“He will remain as CM and will lead us during next election also,” they added.

CM Yediyurappa should resign or be sacked to ensure fair probe in 2019 ‘corruption’ case: Congress

CM Yediyurappa should resign or be sacked to ensure fair probe in 2019 'corruption' case: Congress

New Delhi,: The Congress on Thursday demanded that Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa either resign or be sacked to ensure a fair investigation against him in a 2019 corruption case wherein he allegedly tried to lure a JD(S) MLA to the BJP by offering him money.

This comes a day after the Karnataka High Court vacated a stay on investigations into the case.

Congress leader Rajeev Shukla said the BJP only talks of morality and cleanliness in politics but does not act against its people accused of corruption.

“Now that the high court has vacated the stay on the probe against the chief minister and ordered an investigation, we feel a fair and independent investigation can only take place if the chief minister tenders his resignation or is sacked from his position,” he told reporters.

Now the BJP should solicit the resignation of Yediyurappa and the governor should order an investigation against him, he said.

Shukla noted that the issue was “very serious” and a serious investigation should be conducted.

In its order on Wednesday, the high court vacated the stay on the investigation into the case registered against Yediyurappa in February 2019, when the JD(S)-Congress coalition was in power in Karnataka.

Yediyurappa allegedly offered money to the son of JD(S) MLA Naganagouda Kandkur’s son Sharanagouda to lure the latter to the BJP to topple the state government.

Shukla pointed out that earlier, Yediyurappa was also allegedly involved in a Rs 662-crore apartment scam in Bengaluru but no probe was ordered despite the high court giving directions in this regard.

Shukla also mentioned another case against Yediyurappa involving the alleged illegal allotment of 24 acres of government land to private individuals, which incurred huge losses to the state exchequer.

“The government should immediately probe the matter. The chief minister should resign and a quick decision should be taken on this,” he said.

Shukla said the BJP has no right to claim that it fights against corruption and preach morality till it acts against its own people who are accused of corrupt practices.

He alleged that the BJP creates a lot of hue and cry even over false charges against others, but remains silent when its leaders are accused of corruption.

Shukla also raised the issue of Karnataka Rural Development Minister K S Eswarappa writing a letter to the state governor regarding the alleged interference of Yediyurappa in his ministry and decisions being taken without his knowledge.

“When a minister of his government makes such serious allegations against the chief minister, Yediyurappa should either resign or be sacked,” he said.

Indian researchers develop nanozymes that can block HIV reactivation

Indian researchers develop nanozymes that can block HIV reactivation

Bengaluru: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) here have developed artificial enzymes that they said can successfully block reactivation and replication of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the host’s immune cells.

Made from vanadium pentoxide nanosheets, these “nanozymes” work by mimicking a natural enzyme called glutathione peroxidase that helps reduce oxidative stress levels in the host’s cells, which is required to keep the virus in check, an IISc statement said on Thursday.

The study, published in ‘EMBO Molecular Medicine, was led by Amit Singh, Associate Professor and Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance Senior Fellow at the Department of Microbiology & Cell Biology and Centre for Infectious Diseases Research (CIDR), and Govindasamy Mugesh, Professor at the Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry.

“The advantage is that the nanozymes are stable inside biological systems and do not mediate any unwanted reactions inside the cells,” Mugesh said. “They are also quite easy to prepare in the lab.”

There is currently no way to eliminate HIV from a patient’s body completely, according to the statement.

Anti-HIV drugs are only successful in suppressing the virus; they fail at eradicating HIV from infected cells. The virus hides inside the hosts immune cells in a “latent” state and stably maintains its reservoir.

When the levels of toxic molecules such as hydrogen peroxide increase in the host’s cells, leading to a state of increased oxidative stress, the virus gets “reactivated” – it emerges from hiding and begins replicating again, it said.

A few years ago, Amit Singh’s team developed a biosensor to measure oxidative stress levels in HIV-infected immune cells in real-time, it was stated.

“We found that to come out of latency and reactivate, HIV needs very little oxidative stress,” he said.

One way to prevent reactivation is to keep the oxidative stress constantly low, which would “lock” the virus in a permanent state of latency.

Enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase are essential for this process; they convert toxic hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. However, inducing the host cells to produce more quantities of these enzymes could disrupt the tightly regulated cellular redox machinery.

Around the same time, Mugesh’s group published a study showing that nanowires made of vanadium pentoxide can efficiently mimic the activity of glutathione peroxidase.

Singh’s lab, therefore, decided to collaborate with them.

The researchers prepared ultrathin nanosheets of vanadium pentoxide in the lab and treated HIV-infected cells with them.

The sheets were found to reduce hydrogen peroxide just as effectively as the natural enzyme and prevent the virus from reactivating.

“We found that these nanosheets were having some sort of direct effect where the expression of the host genes essential for virus reactivation is reduced,” said Shalini Singh, first author and Research Associate at CIDR.

When the team treated immune cells from HIV-infected patients undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART) with the nanozymes, latency was induced faster and subsequent reactivation was suppressed when therapy was stopped, indicating that combining the two was more effective, she added.

Combining ART with the nanozymes also has other advantages.

Some ART drugs can cause oxidative stress as a side effect, which can damage heart or kidney cells, Amit Singh said.

“Adding a nanozyme like this can help in reducing the side effects caused by such ART drugs.” This can improve the quality of life of HIV patients undergoing treatment.

Although the nanozymes were found to be harmless to normal cells in lab tests, Mugesh said further studies are needed to understand if they can have other effects once they are introduced inside the body.

“Where will they go? Which organs will they enter? How long will they stay in the body? We need to look at all these aspects,” he added.
