Delhi govt hospital bars nurses from talking in Malayalam at work union fumes

June 7, 2021 by Nasheman

New Delhi: A Delhi government hospital Saturday issued a circular asking its nursing staff not to use Malayalam at work as “maximum patients and colleagues do not know this language” which it said causes a lot of inconvenience.

The circular issued by the Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (GIPMER), one of the leading facilities here, has asked its nurses to use only Hindi and English for communication or face “strict action”.

G B Pant nurses’ association president Liladhar Ramchandani claimed it was issued in pursuance of a complaint sent by a patient to a senior officer in the health department, regarding use of Malayalam language at the hospital, while adding that “the union disagrees with the wordings used in the circular”.

The circular says, “A complaint has been received regarding Malayalam language being used for communication in working places in GIPMER. Whereas maximum patient and colleagues do not know this language and feel helpless causing a lot of inconvenience”.

“So, it is directed to all nursing personnel to use only Hindi and English for communication. Otherwise serious action will be taken, it reads.

Ramchandani, also the secretary general of Delhi Nurses Federation said, “As a language’s name, Malayalam, has been inserted in the circular, many will take offence”.

He also claimed that this circular was “consequent of the complaint filed by the patient” and “internally, there is no issue among the nurses and the administration”.

Many nurses at various hospitals across India, hail from Kerala, with Malayalam being their native language.

The circular has drawn sharp criticism from other nursing unions too.

Twitter users demand justice for pregnant woman of Mangaluru who was denied treatment at hospitals

June 7, 2021 by Nasheman

Mangaluru: Twitter users on Sunday demanded justice for Khatija Jasmeen, a pregnant woman from Mangaluru who was allegedly denied treatment at various hospitals after testing positive for COVID-19.

According to the allegations labeled by the patient through a press meet, Dr. Priya Ballal, a local Gynecologist who was treating Jasmeen used her influence to deny admission to Jasmeen to various hospitals in the city after she tested positive for the virus.

The allegations added Jasmeen was into her last trimester of pregnancy when the incident took place in the third week of May. It further added that 31-year-old Jasmeen complained of cold and flu to Dr. Priya who advised her to take medication and rest at home.

When her condition partially deteriorated and she experienced fever, the family once again contacted Dr. Priya who asked Jasmeen to undergo a COVID test. The test returned positive and Dr. Priya asked Jasmeen to get admitted to her hospital for 15 days.

Jasmeen tried consulting other doctors as she didn’t support the idea of getting admitted to the hospital for 15 days. Jasmeen’s family took her to another private hospital in the city. After initially checking the patient and going through Dr. Priya’s prescription for the patient doctors at the hospital contacted Dr. Priya and after the call refused treatment to Jasmeen.

The same dilemma for the patient continued at the next nine hospitals in the city where Dr. Priya allegedly denied admission to the patient using her influence.

Twitter users started a campaign with #StopMedicalMafia and #JusticeForJasmeen that grossed over one lakh tweets slamming the doctor and behavior of the hospitals in the city at the time of a pandemic and in a place that is known as the medical hub of Coastal Karnataka.
