All-round RCB thrash Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets in IPL

All-round RCB thrash Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets in IPL

Dubai: Royal Challengers Bangalore dished out a clinical display with both bat and ball to record a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League here on Wednesday, boosting their prospects of a top-two finish.

Chasing 150, RCB completed the task with as many as 17 balls to spare.

Star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell blazed away to an unbeaten 50 off just 30 balls, while Srikar Bharat played sensibly for his 44 off 35 deliveries.

RCB needed 71 runs in the back 10 after the RR bowlers checked the flow of runs following the dismissals of Virat Kohli (25) and Devdutt Padikkal (22).

Kohli and Padikkal gave the team a brisk start as RCB scored nine runs per over in the power play.

The Indian captain got three boundaries in the first over though he was lucky with the first one that flew over the slip cordon off a leading edge.

However, both got out after settling down with Kohli falling to a fine direct hit by Riyan Parag after he had made a diving stop.

Earlier, RCB staged an excellent comeback as Rajasthan Royals blew away a blistering start to finish at 149 for nine.

Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed (2/10) and leg-break bowler Yuzvendra Chahal (2/18) triggered the slide after RR were cruising at 100 for one in the 11th over.

Pacer Harshal Patel (3/34) came close to picking a hat-trick in successive matches, in the final over, but Kartik Tyagi denied him that as RR lost eight wickets for 49 runs.

Evin Lewis top-scored with 58 off 37 balls, but he was guilty of throwing away his wicket at a crucial juncture, and so was skipper Sanju Samson (19), whose adventurism did not help his team.

Asked to take first strike, RR saw off two quiet overs before Evin Lewis and Yashasvi Jaiswal (31) decided to cut loose at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

From eight for two in two overs, RR were cruising at 39 for no loss at the end of fourth before racing past the fifty-run mark in the next over, with Lewis being the aggressor.

Jaiswal played the day’s first scoring shot when he hit Mohammed Siraj through the cover and in the next over, he clobbered Glenn Maxwell for a huge six over long on.

Lewis took over after that, smashing debutant English left-arm pacer George Garton for two sixes and a four as RR picked 18 off the over.

Garton was coming back into the attack after being strangely taken off despite a very economical first over.

Lewis hammered another six and a four against Harshal Patel, as RR crossed the fifty in the fifth over.

India pacer Siraj came back to bowl a tight sixth over but Jaiswal got two boundaries off Daniel Christian to record RR’s best opening partnership of the ongoing season, even as Kohli kept switching his bowlers frequently.

Maxwell kept things tight in the next over, giving away just four runs, before Jaiswal smoked Christian for a maximum over extra cover.

However, Christian had the last laugh as Jaiswal mistimed and failed to clear Siraj at mid off.

It swung a bit early on but the fast bowlers didn’t get much purchase from the pitch as the innings progressed.

Lewis continued in same vein and hit Harshal Patel for two successive fours before in-form skipper Sanju Samson went inside out to clobber leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal over extra over for a six.

Garton, who was taken to the task by Lewis in his second over, came back strongly to exact revenge when he had the big-hitter from Trinidad sky one for wicketkeeper Bharat Srikar to complete a high catch.

Samson pulled Garton over deep square leg for a six but RR lost the plot after that, the slide starting with the wicket of Mahipal Lomror off Chahal.

With ‘Get Well Soon’ placards, Congress workers protest outside Kapil Sibal’s house

With 'Get Well Soon' placards, Congress workers protest outside Kapil Sibal's house

New Delhi: Hours after he raised questions over the functioning of the Congress, senior party leader Kapil Sibal on Wednesday came under attacks from several quarters with party workers also protesting outside his house here.

In the wake of several Congress leaders quitting the party and its Punjab unit in turmoil, Sibal demanded that an immediate meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) be convened and wondered who in the party was taking decisions in the absence of a full-time president.

Sibal, a member of the ‘Group of 23’ which last year had written to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, said at a press conference that the grouping is “not a Jee Huzur 23” and will continue to put forth the views and will continue to repeat the demands.

Carrying ‘Get Well Soon Kapil Sibal’ placards and raising slogans against Sibal, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) workers protested outside his Jor Bagh residence, saying they were “hurt” by his remarks.

“The workers went there on their own accord as they felt hurt by Sibal’s remarks. They just expressed their disappointment over the remarks,” a senior DPCC functionary said on condition of anonymity.

The protesters raised slogans against Sibal asking him to “leave the party”.

Several leaders hit out at Sibal for what they said was questioning the leadership from which he had earlier “benefitted”.

Youth Congress chief Srinivas B V said on Twitter, “Listen ‘Ji-Huzoor’ :- The ‘President’ and ‘Leadership’ of the party are the same, who always ensured your entry in Parliament, made you a ‘minister’ during the good times of the party, when in opposition, ensured your entry into Rajya Sabha, always rewarded with responsibilities in good and bad times. And when the ‘time’ came for struggle, then…”

Congress general secretary Ajay Maken and Chhattisgarh minister T S Singhdeo hit out at Sibal for his remarks.

Delhi Congress leader Alka Lamba also slammed Sibal, alleging that she kept requesting him in the 2020 assembly elections to come to Chandni Chowk and campaign but he did not come.

“The workers whom Sibal called for a meeting at his home ahead of the polls, they joined Aam Aadmi Party the next day…. Will the Congress run on these people’s strength?” Lamba said on Twitter.

Mid-Day Meal scheme to be now called PM POSHAN, to cover students of pre- primary classes also

September 30, 2021 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The national Mid-Day Meal Scheme in government and aided schools will now be known as PM POSHAN Scheme and will also cover students of balvatikas or pre primary classes, the government announced Wednesday.

Encouraging “Tithi Bhojan” to allow people from community to provide special food to children on occasions and festivals, using harvest from “school nutrition gardens” for cooking mid-day meals, cooking competitions to promote ethnic cuisine and innovative menus and involvement of Farmers Producer Organizations (FPO) and Women Self Help Groups in implementation of the scheme, are among the features which have been added in the new scheme.

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the roll-out of the ‘PM POSHAN in Schools’ scheme that will provide hot cooked meal to students of elementary classes in government and government-aided schools across the country. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Today the CCEA cleared the PM POSHAN (POshan SHakti Nirman) Scheme for providing one hot cooked meal in government and government-aided schools from 2021-22 to 2025-26, earlier known as ‘National Programme for Mid-Day Meal in Schools popularly known as Mid-Day Meal Scheme. This is a centrally-sponsored scheme which covers all school children studying in classes 1 to 8 in government, government-aided schools,” Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told reporters.

“Under the new scheme, mid-day meals have been extended to students studying in pre-primary or Balvatikas in addition to children studying in class 1 to 8 in government and government-aided schools across India. This will benefit about 11.80 crore children studying in 11.20 lakh schools,” he added.

The CCEA has approved the continuation of the national scheme of PM POSHAN in schools for the five-year period 2021-22 to 2025-26 with the financial outlay of 2 54061.73 crores from the central government and 31733.17 crore from state governments and union territory administrations.

“Central government will also bear additional cost of about Rs 45000 crore on food grains. Therefore, the total scheme budget will amount to 130794.90 crore. The concept of Tithi Bhojan will be encouraged extensively. Tithi Bhojan is a community participation programme in which people provide special food to children on special occasions and festivals.

“Government is also promoting development of ‘School Nutrition Gardens’ in schools to give children first-hand experience with nature and gardening. The harvest of these gardens is used in the scheme providing additional micro nutrients. School Nutrition Gardens have already been developed in more than 3 lakh schools,” he said.

While social audit of the scheme is made mandatory in all the districts, special provision is made for providing supplementary nutrition items to children in aspirational districts and districts with high prevalence of Anemia.

“Cooking competitions will be encouraged at all levels right from village level to national level to promote ethnic cuisine and innovative menus based on locally available ingredients and vegetables. Involvement of Farmers Producer Organizations (FPO) and Women Self Help Groups in implementation of the scheme will be encouraged. Use of locally grown traditional food items for a fillip to local economic growth will be encouraged,” Pradhan said.

“Field visits for progress monitoring and inspections will be facilitated for students of eminent universities and institutions and also trainee teachers of Regional Institutes of Educations (RIE) and District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET).

CM Bommai wants Punjab-like food processing units in central Karnataka

CM Bommai wants Punjab-like food processing units in central Karnataka
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai

Bengaluru: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday mooted the idea of creation of a mini-Punjab in central Karnataka by growing a variety of horticultural crops in the region between Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers and setting up over a 100 food processing units there.

“The seven to eight-lakh hectare land between Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers can be utilised for a variety of horticulture crops where over 100 food processing units can be set up. It will be like a mini-Punjab which will give jobs through growing natural horticulture crops,” Bommai said while sharing his thoughts on his vision for the State.

His talk was organised by the Karnataka Media Academy (KMA) on its 40th Foundation Day ceremony held through social media. Bommai released the logo of the KMA on the occasion.

The Chief Minister said Karnataka is blessed with 10 agro-climatic zones, making the State distinct from others.

The zones enable the State to grow a variety of crops, an advantage which must be utilised, he said.

“The State is also gifted with a number of rivers flowing from west to east to other States, which must be tapped and properly utilised,” he said.

Also, the Chief Minister said he is planning to bring out a policy on the utilisation of the 350-km coastline for tourism and port development.

“This week, we will take a decision on inland and hinterland development. When 60 per cent of Indonesia’s economy is growing due to its ports, we can also explore that possibility,” he said.

Further, Bommai wanted to explore the temple, coastal and heritage tourism by improving the ports and airports.

Education is also an area of priority with emphasis on technical education in high schools and improving science and maths education in rural areas, he said.

“The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is contributed by 30 per cent population which needs to be increased. In this regard, we want SC/ST/OBC and minorities and their women to become skilled workers and take part in economic activities,” Bommai said.

Upgrading hospitals in districts, protection to the economically weaker sections and destitutes, employment-centric policy for job creation, art, culture, music and literature are also areas of focus, the Chief Minister added.

September 30, 2021 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Karnataka Higher Education Minister C N Ashwath Narayan on Wednesday said engineering will be taught in Kannada in four colleges from the current year.

“Teaching engineering in Kannada will begin in four colleges from the current year itself. Bheemanna Khandre Institute of Technology, Bhalki (Civil), BLDAE VP Dr P G Halakatti College of Engineering, Vijayapura (Civil), SJC Institute of Technology, Chikkaballapura (Mechanical), and Maharaja Institute of Technology, Mysuru (Mechanical) will start to teach in Kannada,” he said.

National Board of Accreditation (NBA) accredited colleges have been permitted to teach engineering in Kannada, he said, adding that upto 30 students can be admitted.

The Minister also said a consensual agreement has been reached between the government and private colleges not to hike the fees of engineering courses in private colleges.

The fees for the engineering courses in private colleges for students who secure admission this year under government quota will continue as earlier in two different slabs of Rs 65,340 and Rs 58,806, he said.

“While private colleges had pressed to increase the fee by 30 per cent, the committee headed by Prof. Karisiddappa, Vice-Chancellor of Vishweshwaraiah Technological University (VTU), had recommended a hike of 15-25 per cent. But, in view of the COVID-19 situation, representatives of private colleges were convinced not to go for a hike,” the Minister was quoted as saying by his office in a release.

This decision was taken at a meeting held with private college representatives at Vikasa Soudha here, it said.

The other important decisions taken at the meeting include fixing a maximum cap of Rs 20,000 each for fees collected in the form of ‘miscellaneous fees’ and ‘skill fees’.

Also miscellaneous and skill fees, along with admission fees should not be remitted at colleges, but at the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), it said.

This decision has been taken as per the recommendations of a committee headed by Prof Karisiddappa, the Minister said.

Kapil Sibal demands immediate meeting of CWC, says 'group of 23' not 'Jee Huzur 23'
Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal

New Delhi: With several Congress leaders quitting the party and its Punjab unit in turmoil, senior party leader Kapil Sibal on Wednesday demanded that an immediate meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) be convened and wondered who in the party was taking decisions in the absence of a full-time president.

BJP Government is illegitimate child, Karjol is its minister: MLA M. B. Patil

September 30, 2021 by Nasheman

BJP Government is illegitimate child, Karjol is its minister: MLA M. B. Patil

BIJAPUR: Expressing anguish over the remarks of Water Resources Minister, Govind Karjol who has reportedly termed Upper Krishna Project as the ‘illegitimate child’ of the Congress, Former Water Resources Minister and MLA, M. B. Patil has responded sharply by describing the BJP government as ‘illegitimate child’ and Karjol as Minister of such a government.

Addressing media persons on Wednesday, he said that a veteran and dignified Minister such as Karjol should not have used such words and should not have stooped to that low while talking about UKP.

Reminding him that Almatti dam was launched during Congress government by Prime Minister, late, Lalbahadur Shastri, Patil said that majority of the major dams were constructed during the Congress era.

Recalling how on several occasions, Karjol has raised the issue of UKP and giving relief to farmers who are losing land, in assembly, Patil said when Karjol was in opposition, he was emotionally mentioning the issue of UKP.

“ Now that your government is in power and you are Water Resources Minister, why don’t you ensure that adequate funds are allocated for the project”, he said.

Stating that even Karjol and another Minister, Murgesh Nirani have advocated the need for giving compensation of Rs. 40 lakh per acre to the farmers losing land to the UKP project, Patil asked nearly Rs. 1 lakh crore in the coming budget for land acquisition, relief and rehabilitation.

Patil said that while the BJP had allocated Rs. 6450 crore for land acquisition and R&R, the Congress government had allocated Rs. 30,000 crore for the purpose.

Claiming that the BJP government has not ensured issuing of gazette notification for UKP-III for increasing the height of Almatti dam to 524 meters, despite the fact that BJP is ruling in State and the Centre, he challenged them to get it done.

Patil said that when he was Water Resources Minister, he did not wait for the gazette notification to be issued but started all head works related construction of canals for filling up of tanks.

“ Because of such a visionary and important decision taken, today we have completed a canal network of 1000 kilometers which has helped in filling the number of tanks in the district. This has led to recharging of thousands of borewells. The value of agricultural land has multiplied because of the water facility. Today, most of the farmers are earning higher profit from the lands, which is because of the decision taken by the Congress government”, he said.

Again reminding Karjol that it is their government and he has a greater chance to help the people of Bijapur and Bagalkot district, he asked him to just implement what he has said. “ Don’t listen to Congress, just do whatever you had promised for the people here”, he said.

Hoping that Karjol will do justice for the people here, Patil not only expressed his full support with him, but also warned him of not using absurd words against the Congress in future.

Teenage Pak terrorist captured alive by Army urges handlers across LoC to take him back home

Teenage Pak terrorist captured alive by Army urges handlers across LoC to take him back home

Srinagar: A Pakistani terrorist captured alive by the Indian Army during a live encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri sector has asked his handlers in the neighbouring country to take him back to his mother.

“I appeal to the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) area commander, the ISI and the Pakistan Army to take me back to my mother just like they sent me here (India),” Ali Babar Patra, the teenage terrorist from Pakistan, said in a video message released by the Army here on Wednesday.

Patra was nabbed by the Army during a live encounter in the Uri sector on September 26, when he asked for his life to be spared. Another Pakistani infiltrator was killed in the nine-day operation that began on September 18.

In the video message, Patra said the Pakistan Army, the ISI and the LeT were spreading lies about the situation in Kashmir.

“We were told that the Indian Army is carrying out a bloodbath, but everything is peaceful here. I want to tell my mother that the Indian Army has taken good care of me,” he said.

He also said the behaviour of the officers and jawans of the Indian Army with the locals who visit the camp where he was lodged was extremely good.

“I can hear the azaan (call for prayers) on the loudspeakers five times a day. The behaviour of the Indian Army is completely opposite to that of the Pakistan Army. This makes me feel that there is peace in Kashmir,” Patra said.

“On the contrary, they take advantage of our helplessness in Pakistani Kashmir to send us here,” he added.

Giving details of his initiation into terror ranks, Patra said he lost his father seven years ago and had to drop out of school due to financial constraints.

“I took a job in a garment factory in Sialkot where I met Anas who used to recruit people for the LeT. Due to my situation, I went with him. He paid me Rs 20,000 and promised to pay another Rs 30,000 later on,” he added.

Patra also shared the details of the weapons training he underwent with the Pakistan Army and the ISI at Camp Khyber Delihabibullah.
