Rahul Gandhi asks Centre to provide ‘credible data’ on Covid deaths in India

November 24, 2021 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday demanded that the government provide credible data on Covid deaths in the country and pay a compensation of Rs four lakh each to families of those who lost their lives due to coronavirus.

Gandhi shared a video in which families, who lost their dear ones due to Covid in Gujarat, alleged that they did not receive timely help from the government.

He also attacked the “Gujarat model” which the BJP has projected as the best in the country.

“The Congress party has two demands that credible data on Covid deaths be disclosed and compensation of Rs four lakh be given to the families of those who lost their kin due to COVID-19.

The government will have to ease the pain of people and they should get compensation,” he said in a tweet in Hindi, using the hashtag

In the 4.31 minute video as part of “Congress Nyay campaign”, Gandhi said the Gujarat model is much talked about but the families whom they talked to said that during Covid times they neither got a hospital bed nor a ventilator.

“When you had to help them in the hospital, you were not there and when they lost Rs 10-15 lakh in hospital and also their family members, you were still not there to provide compensation. What type of Government is this,” he asked.

Gandhi said while the Gujarat government claims that only 10,000 people died due to Covid, the truth is that three lakh people have died due to Covid.

He claimed that Congress workers have gone house to house to ascertain this.

“The official tally says 10,000 people died due to Covid, but the truth is three lakh,” he claimed.

He said in today’s Gujarat model, only Rs 50,000 is being paid as compensation to people losing their kin due to Covid, whereas they should get Rs three lakh each.

“The prime minister has Rs 8,500 crore for buying a new plane, but the government has no money for paying compensation to those who lost their family members due to Covid,” he said.

Gandhi said the Congress wants the government to pay compensation of Rs four lakh to all the lakhs of people who died due to Covid in the country.

“Some select industrialists are being handed over the country and have been given relief in tax of lakhs of crore during Covid times, but the poor people of India are not being paid compensation due to Covid deaths,” he alleged.

“The Congress party will exert pressure on the government and will make sure compensation of Rs four lakh each is paid to all those poor families who lost their kin due to Covid,” Gandhi said in the video.

The Congress has stepped up its campaign against the BJP in Gujarat, which goes to polls late next year.

Punjab polls 2022: AAP-chief Arvind Kejriwal promises eight education reforms in state

November 24, 2021 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI:  Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has given eight guarantees for comprehensive education reforms in Punjab. “These guarantees will be fulfilled on a priority basis as soon as the AAP government is formed in 2022,” he said.

Recognizing the importance of education and teachers, Kejriwal gave the first guarantee to create a ‘good environment for education in Punjab. In the second guarantee, he promised to secure all types of raw and contract teachers. He said that most of the teachers in Punjab had been working for only Rs10,000 per month for the last 18 years, which was an injustice.

Appealing to Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Kejriwal said that the two demands of the teachers protesting on the tanks — to fill the vacancies and make the raw teachers permanent should be immediately accepted. “If the Channi government doesn’t do so, then during my next visit to Punjab, I will go to the teachers’ dharna and the demands of the teachers will be met on the formation of the AAP government,” he said.

To save the teachers of Punjab from the hassle of transfers, he gave the third guarantee to change the ‘Teacher Transfer’ policy. He said that Punjab was forcing a teacher to teach in two schools located at a distance of 200 kilometers. “The policy of transfer of teachers in Punjab will be changed on the lines of Delhi. With full transparency, the policy of teachers based on their own choice and posting near home will be implemented,” he said.

Through the fourth guarantee, Kejriwal said that teachers would not be burdened with non-teaching work. Through the fifth guarantee, he announced to fill all the vacant posts of the teachers. With the sixth guarantee, he promised to send teachers abroad for training. “Teachers of Delhi have been trained in modern teaching methods in Canada, USA and England, along with the management institutes of the country. Similar training will be imparted to the teachers of Punjab,” he said. Seventh guarantee was about giving timely promotion to teachers. The eighth guarantee was to provide a cashless medical facility to all teachers and their families.

Over 100 officials formed into several teams carried out the search operation,in the offices including East BDA office, RT Nagar,Vijayanagar, HSR Layout and Banashankari offices and found massive irregularities which caused huge loss to the state exchequer.

According to the officials, in the land acquisition section, the officials and staff have allegedly created fake documents to facilitate rewarding compensation to non deserving persons.

There were huge irregularities while sanctioning CA sites which had been granted in HSR and HBCS layouts were misused.

Despite having the knowledge about the irregularities, despite having information, neither the officials nor the staff have initiated any action against the persons or organizations for violations.

The location of the sites allocated to the beneficiaries have been changed illegally to give them sites in different locations.

Big dimension sites have not been alloted for personal gain and the officials and staff allegedly allowed private parties to encroach to build sheds illegally on these sites. This has caused huge loss to the state exchequer, the probe revealed.

Sites alloted to the land owners after land acquisition process has been granted to the actual beneficiaries, and the officials alloted such sites to others.

An immediate compensation of Rs.10,000 for the houses which were affected due to water entering the premises, and Rs.5 lakh for the houses which were completely destroyed and an amount of Rs.1 lakh for the houses which were damaged would be paid soon for those who suffered due to incessant rains and flooding in Yelahanka area recently, Chief Minister,Basavaraj Bommai said.

About 400 houses are affected in Yelahanka area. About 10km of main roads and 20km of interior roads are also damaged.

I have instructed for preparing the estimates of damage to infrastructure.Funds would be released immediately to take up repair works.”

The Chief Minister, Bommai attributed the flooding problem to hurdles for Rajakaluves. Work for widening of 50km of Rajakaluves had been taken up.It had been decided to take up widening of 50km more.

The width of the Rajakaluves need to be widened from the present 8–10feet to 30ft.Necessary measures would be taken for smooth flow of flood waters in Rajakaluves,he said.

Continuous rains in the last 3 days had filled Yelahanka lake which is overflowing. Flood water inundated the houses in surrounding areas and Kendriya Vihar apartment complex.

Water has submerged the basement of the apartment upto 4–5 feet.Local MLA Vishwanath provided food, water and other essential help for the residents who are stuck in their homes, Bommai said.

Drainage system for the Apartment :

There are 603 people residing in Kendriya Vihar apartment complex. Necessary drainage system would be provided for the complex to drain out the flood waters.

National Highways Authority would be approached to get necessary clearance to take up the works as the drains passed under the highway. Then only the problem could be solved permanently, Bommai said.

Source of the problem :

The problem had its source at Yelahanka lake which is connected to 11 more lakes upstream.

The heavy rains has led to overflow from all the lakes to Yelahanka lake which has two narrow Rajakaluves which are choked at many places or being encroached, the Chief Minister, pointed out.

The situation is the same in many parts of the city. The existing Rajakaluves with a width of 8 to 10 feet are proving to be inadequate to carry the heavy flow.

The flood waters flow through Yelahanka lake and down to Jakkur lake,Rachenahalli lake and then towards KR Puram to join Pinakini river before entering Tamil Nadu.

Measures would be taken to widen the Rajakaluves and build diversion canals. Action to divert the waters from inundated apartment complexes and institutions would also be initiated,” he stated.

Encroachments on Rajakaluves would be cleared:

Replying to questions from media persons on evicting encroachments on Rajakaluves,Bommai said, BBMP had identified 714 illegal structures on Rajakaluves.

Houses and buildings which have come up on Rajakaluves would be evicted. However he assured that care would be taken to ensure that the poor are not affected by providing them alternative facility.

Houses and residential complexes on the Buffer Zones would be shifted after giving them adequate time to move.

PM Modi seeks report on rain havoc:

Flood havoc in the city has drawn the attention of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi as he called the Chief Minister on Tuesday morning and sought details.

The Prime Minister enquired about loss of lives, damage to crops and public property. He was particularly more concerned about Bengaluru.

The Prime Minister asked me to draw up short term and long term measures to tackle the problem,”Bommai said.

Improve drains at Manyata Tech Park :

Inspecting the water logging at Manyata Tech Park Bommai observed that the problem is being caused by flaws in internal drain system in the tech park.

He instructed the BBMP officers and the personnel of the tech park to work in coordination to address the problem.

Action should be taken at the earliest to ensure that those working in the tech park are are not affected,” he said.

A planned drainage system is needed to avoid flooding in the city. The Water from overflowing lakes is flooding the low lying areas.

A master plan to ensure smooth flow of flood waters from Yelahanka through Mahadevapura to Pinakini river would be drawn up, he said.

Odisha woman stages dharna near groom’s house in bridal attire as man didn’t turn up for wedding

November 24, 2021 by Nasheman

BERHAMPUR: A 25-year old woman sat in dharna in her bridal finery for the second consecutive day on Tuesday in front of her groom’s house at Bramha Nagar here after the man did not turn up for their wedding, the police said.

The police has clamped section 107 Cr PC in the area to maintain peace in the area and the executive magistrate, Berhampur issued summons to her to appear before his court at 4.30 pm.

But the woman did not do so till 6 PM when the reports last came in, sources said.

The bride, who is the daughter of a retired police officer, said she, her family members and the invitees had waited for the groom at the venue for the wedding on Monday.

As he failed to turn up, she along with others tried to enter his house at Bramha Nagar.

But his parents kept the door firmly closed.

The woman along with a social activist, Pramila Tripathy then sat on the dharana.

The woman said she will continue the dharna till the matter was solved.

She claimed that their marriage was registered in a city court on September 7, 2020 without the knowledge of the groom’s parents.

“I was here to counsel her and try to solve the matter,” Tripathy said.

The woman claimed that the marriage was registered at a court in Bhubaneswar on September 7, 2020 without the knowledge of the groom’s parents.

The groom, a doctor by profession, had tried to convince his parents but they refused to accept her.

She alleged that her in-laws tortured her and she had lodged an FIR at the Mahila police station here.

The date for solemnising the wedding as per Hindu rituals was fixed for Monday after the two families met and discussed the situation, but the groom failed to turn up, she said.

The police said the woman’s complaint is pending at the Mahila police station.

“As the case is in the court, we will act according to the direction of the court” said a police officer.

Inspector in-charge, Baidyanathpur police station, Ram Kumar Murmu said the force personnel have been deployed at the dharna site.

He said section 107 Cr PC (security for keeping peace) has been imposed at the direction of the executive magistrate.

Neither the groom nor his family members could be contacted for their comments as they kept the door of the house tightly shut.
