Women Empowerment World University of Design introduces Award Winning Mamma Pod

March 5, 2021 by Nasheman

By Husna Rizwan

New Delhi, March 1st, 2021: What use is a piece of knowledge which cannot be brought into practical application! Design maestros at World University of Design, in collaboration with Prof. Deepti Gupta at Dept of Textile & Fibre Engineering, IIT New Delhi and Dr. Ramesh Agarwal at Neonatology division of Department of Pediatrics, AIIMS have created a miraculous product to sustain lives of fragile newborns with low birth weight. The product called – Mamma Pod – an Assistive Garment for giving Kangaroo Mothercare – has been selected for the “Biotech Product and Process Development and Commercialization Awards 2020” by the Government of India.

image.png

Mamma Pod is an ergonomically designed innovative carrier to keep the neonate securely in contact with the mother’s skin, helping the baby to stay warm and supported. As the name suggests, Kangaroo Mother Care or KMC draws inspiration from kangaroos who keep their newborns safely in the pouch whilst carrying out their life activities from feeding to hopping and even sleeping. KMC helps a mother to keep her child in close contact with her and carry on with the multiple chores at hand without feeling the usual fatigue. The path-breaking design allows anyone and everyone to use the garment and is as good in the rural setting as much as it is in the urban setup.

So, how is KMC different from the slings and carriers available in the market for new mothers, if one may ask? The answer is that it caters to the most delicate of all stages in the life of a newborn, the neonatal phase when the baby needs the maximum support and essential care to substantiate itself. Dr. Sanjay Gupta (Vice Chancellor, World University of Design) elaborated on the concept by saying, “Unlike other carriers, Mamma Pod can be worn without assistance by the mother herself and is designed to not only keep the baby secure and cocooned between mother’s breasts but  also to distribute baby’s weight across the shoulders enabling long hours of KMC. Using Mamma pod KMC can easily be given for the required 18-20 hours a day which is crucial for a rapid weight gain by the baby.”

image.png

Mamma pod finds maximum use in areas where ICU and incubation facilities are either not available or insufficiently available. Areas where facilities exist but face electricity shortage would also find extensive use of this assistive device. Dr. Deepti Gupta, the project leader, put the problem is perspective saying – “In a developing country like ours, neonatal deaths have been recorded to be as huge a number as 750,000 as per studies in 2017 and most of them are due to pre-term births and infections contracted while being in the medical facility. The lack of basic amenities for neonates in medical care due to low funding may not be tackled with as quickly but Mamma Pod offers a brisk, economical and effective solution for babies until they weigh 2kgs.”

In absence of care low birth weight babies find it difficult to survive. Applying KMC places the mother and the natural care she provides as the primary caretaker. In such circumstances, combination of Mamma Pod garment and KMC is seen as winners and as a great opportunity to minimize neonatal mortality by as much as 51% if channelized to mothers across India by primary health care centres.

Being design based champions, WUD emphasize on the fact that Design and the related fields are the future of any nation’s growth and productivity.

The Nameless God- a simple story dealing with complex issues.

March 4, 2021 by Nasheman

Savie Karnel

‘The Nameless God,’ tells the story of two children who hold friendship above all. Theirs is a childhood where imaginations run wild and nothing is impossible. The kids pray to God for a day off and good marks. When both Ganeshji and Fakirbaba fail to answer their prayers for good marks, Bachchu and Noor conclude that gods have too much workload, and so they create a new God, a nameless god who would listen only to them. The god works the first miracle- a sudden holiday is declared. When they go out to thank, they are stuck in the riots that breakout after the demolition of the Babri Masjid. Will their new nameless god help them?

The book has received rave reviews from readers of all age groups.  Readers have said that the book has taken them on a nostalgic trip to the childhood and children have discovered a different world of the 90s which has unknown to them. The book has proven to be a conversation starter.

Writer and journalist Alladi Jayashree in her review has compared the characters in the book to those in R K Narayan’s book Swami and Friends. “A child’s gaze on the reality of a communal cauldron that once boiled over, and continues to simmer into the 21st century. Bachchu and Noor and Seema are adorable and redolent of the young denizens of Malgudi. Moon Aunty, and Bachchu’s secret wish to see a skeleton are a delight, and are among the many charming twists in a tale that packs just the right amount of Suspense,” she said.

International Publishing Consultant Jayashree Bhattacharjee has called it “A powerful story by a debut novelist with a strong voice.” She further said, “We are at such a critical juncture of our nationhood that books like The Nameless God are essential to kick-start difficult conversations.”

In a world polorised by religious beliefs, The Nameless God, shows us a different way of being. In the 90s, communal violence was witnessed throughout India. But our society picked up the pieces and continued to live harmoniously. This was possible because of the many untold stories where people went beyond religious barriers to help others. The Nameless God is one such story of friendship and understanding that shows the pointlessness of boundaries created by different faiths

The book is funny, has adventure and in a simple way has dealt with complex issues like secularism, propaganda, democracy and the Indian constitution. This book is a must read for children and people of all ages. The book is sure to take grown ups on a nostalgic trip to their childhoods.

The book is published by Red Panda, the children’s book imprint of Westland Publications. The author Savie Karnel grew up in the coastal town of Karwar. He worked as a journalist with The New Indian Express, Mid Day and Talk magazine in Bangalore. ‘The Nameless God,’ is her debut novel.

Karnataka cabinet minister Ramesh Jarkiholi on Wednesday resigned on moral grounds pending an investigation into the alleged sex tape in which his name cropped up.

In his resignation letter, which has been accepted by Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and forwarded to the Governor for approval, and the Governor has approved the minister resignation in which he claimed innocence.

There should be an investigation into this.Even though I am innocent,am taking moral responsibility and resigning from my post in the cabinet,”Jarkiholi said.

Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi has been accused of sexually exploiting a woman who sought the minister’s help for a short film.

The allegations have been brought by Dinesh Kalahalli,a social activist, who released a video, screenshots and a telephonic conversation, allegedly between the minister and the woman.

Dinesh has filed a complained against the minister in the Cubbon Park police station. He also made it clear that he was not related to the victim, but was approached by her family as there was an environment of fear.

Karnataka Milk Federation chairperson Balachandra Jarkiholi on Wednesday urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to go for a CID or CBI probe into the sex scandal allegedly involving his brother and Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi.

Ramesh Jarkiholi’s brother BJP MP Balachandra Jarkiholi even said and also threatened to file Rs.100 crore defamation case against those who released the sex tape, which he called fake.

Unknown woman visited Ramesh Jarkiholi often at Vidhana Soudha

March 4, 2021 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: The mystery woman seen in the sleazy video with now-resigned Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi had been visiting his chambers at Vidhana Soudha for the last at least eight months, officials told The New Indian Express. She had also, on many occasions, interacted with the staff at Soudha claiming to be a film-maker interested in bringing out a documentary on the state reservoirs. She had told them that she wanted to use drones to shoot the docu-films and wanted necessary clearances as unmanned aerial vehicles or not allowed at these protected sites.https://storage.googleapis.com/vendo-gcs.mmpww.com/jwplayer/index.html?r=24865414

Ramesh had introduced her to several officers at the Water Resources Department and had told them to assist her with inputs to make the documentary. She and Ramesh had been sighted outside Bengaluru too. Highly-placed sources said the narrative that she was a poor job-seeker who was exploited by Jarkiholi is not true as facts suggest otherwise.

“The video, though came out in the open on Tuesday, was uploaded on social media sites from some foreign destination, not India, a few days ago. How can a poor job-seeker do it? The hidden camera used to film the sexcapade appears to be of high quality and costs upwards of  Rs 2 lakh. It has also been placed by an expert with a good knowledge of camera. Again, may not be the plan of a poor, hapless woman. The material has been flawlessly edited and the total raw footage could be at least three to four times the final edited version that was released. Editing too requires money,” they said.

While there is still no clarity as to who is behind the honeytrap, it is obvious from the video that the woman knew Jarkiholi intimately and addresses him in ‘singular’ in the video. The woman does not seem to have been threatened to get into the sexual act, as is evident from the clip, experts said. While some suspected that it could be the handiwork of someone from opposition parties, others did not rule out the possibility of Jarkiholi’s ‘powerful’ enemies within the BJP hatching the plot to finish him off politically. Only people with some clout could have executed the release of the video to perfection and managed the presence of news mediapersons at the Bengaluru Police Commissioner’s office at that precise moment.

Sources said CCTV records at Soudha and phone call records are proof that Jarkiholi and the woman had a long association. Jarkiholi did not have WhatsApp on his mobile phone and picked up another phone with WhatsApp that was available exclusively to this woman, they said. An officer remembers that the woman had introduced three men as her colleagues. Now, the hunt is on to trace them. The sources said that the two grew intimate during the Covid pandemic last year, and had video phone calls on several occasions.
