Koregaon-Bhima probe panel asks Sharad Pawar to appear before it on May 5 and 6

April 28, 2022 by Nasheman

Mumbai:The Koregaon-Bhima Inquiry Commission has directed NCP chief Sharad Pawar to appear before it on May 5 and 6 to record his statement in connection with the January 2018 violence at a war memorial in Pune district of Maharashtra.

The panel had earlier summoned Pawar in 2020, but he could not appear before it due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown. Later, another summons was issued to Pawar for appearing before the commission on February 23 and 24 this year, but the senior politician had sought a fresh date, saying he wanted to file an additional affidavit before recording his testimony.

The affidavit was recently submitted.

Following this, the commission on Wednesday issued another summons to Pawar, said the panel’s advocate, Ashish Satpute.

The NCP chief has been asked to appear before the inquiry commission on May 5 and 6, Satpute added.

Pawar had previously also filed an affidavit before the commission on October 8, 2018.

In February 2020, social group Vivek Vichar Manch member Sagar Shinde filed an application before the commission, seeking the summoning of Pawar in view of certain statements made by him in the media about the 2018 caste violence.

The two-member probe commission comprises the Calcutta High Court’s retired Chief Justice J N Patel and former Maharashtra chief secretary Sumit Mullick.

According to the Pune police, violence had broken out on January 1, 2018 between caste groups near the war memorial in Pune district during the bicentennial anniversary of the 1818 battle of Koregaon-Bhima.

One person had died and several others, including 10 police personnel, were injured in the incident.

The Pune police had alleged that provocative speeches at the ‘Elgar Parishad conclave’, held on December 31, 2017, in Pune, triggered the violence near Koregaon-Bhima.

The police claimed the Elgar Parishad conclave organisers had links with Maoists.

Rashid and Rahul Tewatia power GT’s stunning win, SRH lose despite Umran heroics

April 28, 2022 by Nasheman

Mumbai: All eyes were on Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Umran Malik, but all they could see was a blur. But still, Gujarat Titans had the last laugh as they prised out a five-wicket win in their thrilling IPL match here on Wednesday.

Introduced into the attack as late as the eighth over, as Kane Williamson’s last resort, the young pace sensation delivered what was expected of him, grabbing five wickets with devastatingly quick deliveries to scythe through the Gujarat Titans top-order and almost propel Sunrisers Hyderabad to their sixth successive win in the ongoing edition of the lucrative league.

But Rahul Tewatia (40 not out off 21 balls) and Rashid Khan (31 not out off 11) had other ideas as GT, needing 56 from the last 24 overs after Umran had completed his quota of four overs, knocked off the required runs, with the star from Afghanistan finishing the game with a six over fine leg.

The BCCI, nevertheless, will have again taken serious note of the man from Jammu, who, in one of the best ever exhibitions of fast bowling, finished with incredible figures of 5/25, four of which were bowled.

Opener Abhishek Sharma and Aiden Markram struck sparkling half-centuries as Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 195 for six after being asked to bat first.

In pursuit of a stiff target, the Titans were off to a flyer with Wriddhiman Saha (68) blazing his way to a flurry of boundaries while putting on 69 runs for the first wicket with a subdued Shubman Gill (22), who played the second fiddle.

After the others have tried and failed, Umran succeeded in getting the first breakthrough, when he disturbed Gill’s off stump in the innings’ eighth and his very first over.

Having got himself two fours, GT skipper Hardik Pandya was done in by Umran’s bounce as he top-edged one to the third man.

Meanwhile, playing one of his great IPL knocks, Saha raced to his fifty in 28 balls with a single to long-on.

Luck too was on Saha’s side as Washington Sundar could not hold on to what would have been an unbelievable catch at mid-on, only for the ball ball to race to the boundary.

The show then belonged to Umran before the duo of Tewatia and Rashid swung the match in GT’s favour with their astonishing hitting.

Earlier, Abhishek blazed away to 65 off 42 deliveries, while Markram made a 40-ball 56 during a third-wicket stand of 96 runs.

Then, Shashank Singh (25 off 6 balls) smashed Lockie Ferguson (0/52 in 4 overs) for three successive sixes to score 25 runs in the innings’ final over.

To start with, SRH were helped by Mohammed Shami’s (3/39 in 4 overs) 11-run opening over in which a first-ball beauty was followed by five leg-side wides, not once but twice.

Yash Dayal too conceded 11 runs, thanks to two boundaries by Abhishek Sharma on the off side, as SRH raced to 22 for no loss in two overs.

Kane Williamson clipped Shami over square leg for his first boundary but that’s all the SRH skipper could do with the bat as, three balls later, the seasoned India pacer went through the gate with a lovely seaming delivery to dismiss the Kiwi and give his team the match’s first breakthrough.

Having got a life at point even before he could open his account, Rahul Tripathi smashed Shami for 6, 4, 4 before a review found that the batter was trapped in front of the wicket in an eventful fifth over, which went for 14 runs.

Unperturbed by the fall of two wickets, Abhishek collected two successive fours off Alzarri Joseph — first he lofted over the infield and then found the gap through a packed off-side — to help SRH score 53 runs in the six power play overs at the Wankhede Stadium.

SRH needed a partnership at that stage and the duo of Abhishek and Markram not just provided them that but also kept the scoreboard moving at a very good rate by regularly finding the boundaries.

While Markram dealt with the likes of pacers such as Alzarri, Abhishek went after Rashid Khan, hitting the Afghanistan spin ace for his third six to reach his half-century in style.

Guj Congress accuses ex-CM Rupani of Rs 27,000 crore land scam; BJP govt calls allegation ‘baseless’

April 28, 2022 by Nasheman

Guj Congress accuses ex-CM Rupani of Rs 27,000 crore land scam; BJP govt calls allegation 'baseless'
Former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani

Ahmedabad: The Congress in Gujarat on Wednesday accused former chief minister Vijay Rupani of indulging in Rs 27,000 crore scam by offering to builders a large portion of the land in Surat that was reserved for civic amenities under the government’s urban development plan.

However, the BJP government in the state termed the allegation as “baseless”, and said provisions of law and representations made by people were considered while giving a nod to the Surat Urban Development Authority’s (SUDA) Development Plan (DP) for 2035.

Senior Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia alleged that former CM Rupani, who then also held the portfolio of urban development ministry, had tweaked the DP-2035 of SUDA submitted to the government for approval on the basis of a report of an advisory committee by reducing the amount of land reserved for civic purposes.

Rupani had signed the note on November 12, 2019, giving instruction to only reserve 75.35 lakh square metres of land, out of the 1.66 crore square metres proposed to be kept reserved for public purpose as per the development plan prepared by SUDA for the city for the year 2035, he claimed.

Around 90 lakh square metres of land was thus returned to the builders, which would be worth around Rs 27,000 crore, Modhwadia said.

“Urban town planning scheme has become a milking cow for the leaders of the ruling BJP leaders…We demand a probe into this by an inquiry commission headed by a sitting a high court judge,” the former Congress president alleged.

“Rupani twisted the proposal and 90 lakh square metres of land was returned to the builders. The price of the land will be Rs 27,000 crore. This is just about one city, but we believe this is a state-wide scam,” he said.

Reacting to the allegation, the BJP government in the state currently led by Bhupendra Patel said the action was taken under the provisions of the Urban Development Act as well as after considering various orders of the Supreme Court and Gujarat High Court regarding cancellation of reservation of the land.

A consultation committee was formed to take consider the submissions made by people in this regard, the government added.

Rupani had resigned as the chief minister in September last year, 15 months ahead of the Assembly polls in Gujarat.

Legislators unhappy about delay in cabinet expansion performance of ministers: M P Renukacharya

Legislators unhappy about delay in cabinet expansion & performance of ministers: M P Renukacharya

Bengaluru: With the much awaited expansion or reshuffle of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai-led cabinet in Karnataka taking time, voices of discontent seems to be brewing within the ruling BJP, with party MLA M P Renukacharya on Wednesday openly expressing displeasure about the delay and working of few ministers.

The MLA, who is also the Chief Minister’s political secretary, said several party legislators are of similar opinion and felt that if new faces are inducted into the cabinet, they would work aggressively and bring good name to BJP and the government ahead of 2023 assembly polls.

“I would not like to speak on cabinet exercise, as it is left to the discretion of the Chief Minister, who after discussion with national leadership has to take a decision, but expectations of the legislators was that the vacant berths must be filled as many ministers are holding additional portfolios,” Renukacharya said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said if new faces are given a chance in the cabinet, they will work aggressively and get a good name to the government and the party.

“Instead of keeping the berths vacant, they should be given to new faces…this is not my option alone, but of several legislators. It (expansion) should not have been delayed for so long, it should have been done at the earliest, but not sure why it got delayed,” he added.

There are currently 29 ministers in the state cabinet, including the Chief Minister, as against the sanctioned strength of 34.

Pointing out that only eight to nine months are left for the next assembly polls, Renukacharya said “For a person to prove his ability (as a minister), minimum two to three years is required…one should not become minister for namesake and be limited to the third floor of Vidhana Soudha (where offices of ministers are located).”

In response to a question, he said the incumbent ministers should be more aggressive and he is “not satisfied” with them.

“I’m not blaming any one, but they should be aggressive and there should be speed….Ministers are not properly responding to allegations made against the government by the opposition Congress, everything should not be left to the Chief Minister or the party to handle. Everyone has responsibility,” he said.

Asking ministers to introspect as to how many of them spoke when hijab, halal and azaan issues came up, Renukacharya asked, “Is only chair and selfishness important? Didn’t you want Hindutva? I’m not saying target minority community, but speak against anti-national elements and for the government.”

With polls scheduled next year, there is pressure mounting on the CM to expand or rejig his cabinet soon, after the assembly elections in five states recently.

Bommai had recently said he would get to know about cabinet expansion or reshuffle only after discussing with the BJP high command.

Some legislators have even been advocating a Gujarat-like overhaul of the Karnataka Cabinet soon, to make way for new faces, ahead of the assembly elections next year.

The cabinet exercise will be crucial ahead of the assembly elections, in which the saffron party aims to return to power once again, and has set a target of winning a minimum of 150 seats in the 225-member House.

Amidst calls for dropping Kohli, RCB reacts to his disappointing returns; here’s what RCB tweeted

April 28, 2022 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: The unprecedented slump in form and disappointing returns with the bat of Virat Kohli during the IPL 2022 has lately been the talk of the cricket town with several experts, fans, and pundits sharing their views on the form of the star cricketer.

In the eight innings that the former Indian skipper has stepped on the crease to bat in the IPL this year, he has only returned with 119 runs at a miniature average of 17 and a strike rate of 122.68.

Although Kohli’s fans across social media platforms have backed him and are hoping for him to return to his best once again, several users have also criticized Kohli who has 70 international centuries to his name.

Former Head Coach of Indian Cricket Team Ravi Shastri on Tuesday suggested that Kohli should pull out of the ongoing IPL and take a break from cricket before coming back to play international cricket.

Kohli’s franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday reacted to the challenge Kohli is facing and backed the ace Indian cricketer to come back stronger. In a tweet on Wednesday after the team’s defeat against the Rajasthan Royals, RCB wrote “The only way @imVkohli knows to take on a challenge, is to stare at it without any fear!”

Kohli has been the star performer for the RCB and has been with them ever since the inception of IPL in 2008 becoming the highest run-getter in the history of the IPL.

Both RCB and fans will be hoping that Kohli gets his touch back in the second half of the IPL as they lay in a critical territory (fifth position after their match against RR on Tuesday) on the points table at the moment.

Abhishek Sharma, Markram fifties steer SRH to 195/6 against GT

April 28, 2022 by Nasheman

Mumbai: Opener Abhishek Sharma and Aiden Markram struck sparkling half-centuries as Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 195 for six against Gujarat Titans in their Indian Premier League match here on Wednesday.

Abhishek blazed away to 65 off 42 deliveries, while Markram made a 40-ball 56 during a third-wicket stand of 96 runs.

Against Rashid, Abhishek was particularly strong on the on-side, getting his three sixes over long-on and deep mid-wicket.

However, the 21-year-old’s fine innings came to an end when he inside-edged a slower delivery from Alzarri in the first ball of the 16th over.

Shami came back to dismiss the big-hitting Nicholas Pooran (3) cheaply before Markram got to his fifty by pulling the bowler for a six over deep mid-wicket. Stationed in the deep, Rashid’s day in the field got worse as he misjudged it.

BJP criticises Kejriwal for his 'mannerless' posture during PM's meeting with CMs

New Delhi: The BJP criticised Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday over his “mannerless” posture during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and questioned whether this is how a chief minister should behave at an important meeting.

Tweeting a video of Modi’s interaction with chief ministers, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) IT cell head Amit Malviya said, “Arvind Kejriwal continues to disgrace himself with uncouth mannerism.”

In the video, Kejriwal was seen sitting in a relaxed manner with his hands behind his head.

Asking whether this is how a chief minister should behave at an important meeting, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla wondered whether Kejriwal was “bored or mannerless or both”.

Taking on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, Delhi BJP’s media head Naveen Kumar Jindal dubbed him as a “crook” and said, “This man does not have manners to sit and talk in front of the prime minister. What a shameless man he is.”

The virtual meeting of the prime minister with the chief ministers was convened to discuss the COVID-19 situation in the country
