HDK loyalists quit JDS in protest against ticket for GTD

November 30, 2022 by Nasheman

JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy

MYSURU: Even as JDS senior leader HD Kumaraswamy has embarked on the Pancharatna Yatra to mobilise support ahead of the Assembly elections, the party in Mysuru and Chamundeshwari constituency received a major jolt with senior party functionaries and prominent leaders resigning from the party’s primary membership in protest against party’s rebel MLA GT Devegowda’s leadership

The resigned rebel leaders and workers, who are said to be not happy with the party’s decision to let Devegowda contest from the Chamundeshwari constituency, held a show of strength, Swabhimana Karyakartara Sabhe, and vowed to defeat the MLA in the coming Assembly election.

They lashed out at Devegowda for revolting against the party leadership earlier and dissociating with party workers for the last two years. Speakers at the meeting accused him of hobnobbing with both Congress and BJP, seeking Assembly tickets for him and his son Harish Gowda. “As he did not get any assurance from both parties, he shed crocodile tears in front of party supremo HD Deve Gowda and returned to the party,” they alleged.

Former Zilla panchayat president and Mysuru taluk JDS former president Beeregundi Basavanna said he had earlier worked for Devegowda’s victory, but despite that the MLA insulted him in public after becoming a minister in the previous JDS-Congress coalition government.

He said Devegowda worked against party candidates in previous elections and recalled that Kumaraswamy had assured party leaders from Mysuru that one among them will be the party candidate from Chamundeshwari. But now Devegowda has been picked for the seat and they feel letdown, he added.

India, US armies share battle skills at joint drill

November 30, 2022 by Nasheman

AULI/JOSHIMATH: The ongoing joint India US exercise Yudh Abhyas reached the validation stage on Tuesday. Both the armies shared ground application methods, operational tactics and military philosophy.
The joint exercise had started with the acclimatisation process at Auli Foreign Training Node in Uttarakhand on November 15. It will last till December 2.

Brigadier Pankaj Verma, Indian contingent exercise director, said, “We share best practices with each other while doing our skill development and we also go on to validate the particular exercises during the field exercise which actually begins tonight.”

The Yudh Abhyas is an annual exercise which is conducted between the US and Indian armies.
Brigadier Verma that the aim of the exercise is to learn from each other the best practices, to enhance the TTPs (Tactics, techniques and procedures). “In doing this particular exercise we basically exercise and validate integrated battle groups which are going for various peacekeeping operations under Chapters 6 and 7 of the UN mandate.”

India has built the Foreign Training Node at Auli which is 100 km from LAC with China.  Speaking to this newspaper, the US Army Specialist Solonko said, “The beginning of the exercise was tough due to the high altitude but things have become better now.” We are exchanging the best practices and are trying to adopt whatever is best with the Indian Army and also are sharing that which is our strength, added Solonko.

Brig Verma further stated that the HADR has been the main focus of this edition of the exercise. “We have validated our columns for swift deployment which were integrated in nature to reach out to inaccessible areas and help out the needy to extricate from positions which are not reachable due to difficult locations using our skills our combat medicals and off course our logisticians to extricate them to safer places and move them to better tertiary hospitals.

“Besides this, we have also undertaken the command post exercise, the command post exercise deals with the staff engagement between officers and men of both the armies. They spell out a cohesive and mature course of action which can be followed by an integrated battle group to engage into any peacekeeping operations and provide the commanders a mature and very well-informed information so that it can operate in an ambiguous situation.”

Gujarat Assembly elections: War of words intensify as Kharge jabs at Modi, BJP calls it insult to PM

November 30, 2022 by Nasheman

Mallikarjun Kharge

AHMEDABAD:  As campaigning for the first phase of Gujarat assembly polls involving 89 seats came to an end on Tuesday for voting due on December 1, a war of words between the ruling BJP and Congress erupted over a remark of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge about PM Narendra Modi.

Addressing a public rally in Ahmedabad’s Behrampura on Monday night, Kharge said, “We see your (Modi’s) face in corporation elections as well as in Assembly and Lok Sabha elections everywhere. Do you have 100 heads like Raavan?”

Replying to Kharge’s remark, the BJP accused the Congress of insulting the Gujaratis and appealed to voters to “teach the opposition party a lesson.” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra called on Gujarat voters to cast votes for the “son of the soil” Modi to avenge the insult” in a democratic way.

Of the 89 seats out of the total 182 where polls will be held on December 1, as many as 35 constituencies are spread across the southern districts of Bharuch, Narmada, Tapi, Dang, Surat, Valsad and Navsari. The polling is also due in 48 seats of Saurashtra and six seats of Kutch district.

In 2017, the BJP had managed to win 25 of these 35 seats while the Congress and Bharatiya Tribal Party won eight and two seats, respectively. Of the 14 seats reserved for the STs, the BJP won only five.

While the tribal-dominated areas are still considered BJP’s Achilles’ heel, urban voters in south Gujarat stood firmly with the party in 2017.

In the first phase, the elections will be held on 48 seats of the Saurashtra zone, considered the centre of power in state politics.

Due to the pro-BJP tilt of Patidar voters in Saurashtra, the party’s seats have steadily increased over the last two-and-a-half decades. However, during the Patidar reservation movement, BJP suffered a loss in the 2017 polls. That is why Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given importance to Saurashtra in his Gujarat tour to marginalise the loss in 2022.

The results show that in 2017, out of a total of 48 seats in Saurashtra, the Congress won 28 seats, while BJP won 19. BJP is worried about 2017 results, which is why it started aggressive campaigning for the last six months. A huge cooperative meeting was held in Amreli district in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in Rajkot and Morbi BJP National President JP Nadda held a road show. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also held meetings in Saurashtra, including those in Junagadh and Jam Kandorana, before implementing the model code of conduct.

NDTV co-founder Prannoy Roy, wife resign from RRPR Holding board

November 30, 2022 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Prannoy Roy and his wife Radhika Roy, founders and promoters of channel New Delhi Television (NDTV), have resigned as Directors on the Board of RRPR Holding Private Limited, with effect from November 29, the company said in a regulatory filing on Tuesday.

RRPR Holding, the promoter group vehicle of NDTV, holds 29.18 per cent stake in NDTV, which is being taken over by the Adani group, owned by businessman Gautam Adani.

In a letter on Tuesday, NDTV told the Bombay Stock Exchange, “NDTV has been informed by the Promoter Group vehicle RRPR Holding Private Limited (RRPRH) that the Board of Directors at the meeting held today i.e. November 29, 2022, have approved:

1. Appointment of Mr Sudipta Bhattacharya (DIN: 0006817333), Mr Sanjay Pugalia (DIN: 0008360398), and Mr Senthil Sinniah Chengalvarayan (DIN: 02330757), as Directors on the Board of RRPRH, with immediate effect; and
2. Resignation of Dr Prannoy Roy (DIN: 00025576) and Mrs Radhika Roy (DIN: 00025625) as Directors on the Board of RRPRH, with effect from the close of business hours of November 29, 2022.”

Earlier in August this year, Vishvapradhan Commercial Private Limited (VCPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of AMG Media Networks Limited (AMNL) which is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), exercised the rights and acquired 99.5 per cent of the equity shares of RRPR Holding Private Limited, a promoter group company of NDTV.

Following this, Adani Group decided to make an open offer to acquire the next 26 per cent state stake in NDTV, which will take the group’s total stake to 55.18 per cent, enough to take the ownership right of NDTV.

Earlier in October, the Adani Group informed both exchanges, BSE and NSE, that its indirect subsidiary, Vishvapradhan Commercial Pvt Limited (VCPL), had made an open offer to the public shareholders of New Delhi Television Ltd.

Shares of NDTV have rallied following Adani’s interest in the company. However, the Roys hold a 32.26 per cent stake in NDTV.

Congress doesn’t respect tribals, didn’t support Murmu in presidential polls: PM Modi in Gujarat

November 28, 2022 by Nasheman

NETRANG: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused the Congress of having no respect for the tribal community in the country, and said it even opposed the candidature of Droupadi Murmu in the presidential election held earlier this year.

Addressing a public rally at Netrang, a tribal area of Bharuch district in poll-bound Gujarat, Modi also said that the entire world was amazed at how India has come out of such a big pandemic of COVID-19 in such a short span.

“Congress has no respect for tribals in the country…We decided to make our tribal daughter (Droupadi Murmu) the president of the country. We went to Congress with folded hands to accept her (support her candidature), but they opposed. We put all our might and made the tribal daughter win the election,” Modi said.

“Be it, Birsa Munda or Govind Guru, the Congress did not give respect to tribal leaders of the country,” he further alleged.

The PM said the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in a big country like India was terrifying.

“The whole world faced such a terrifying pandemic. If someone gets sick at our home, we take four to five years to come out of it (financial effect). We faced the pandemic in such a big country. But the way we came out of it, the entire world is amazed. They are not able to understand how it happened,” Modi said.

“Factories got closed; people had to go back to their villages. In such circumstances, our first concern was there should be enough food for poor people; a child of a poor should not go to sleep without food. So we have been providing free ration to 80 crore people for the last three years,” he said.

“Secondly, to fight the pandemic, vaccination was crucial. Even now, many countries are struggling to vaccinate their entire population. We have given more than 200 crore doses of anti-coronavirus vaccine. After two doses, we provided a booster dose also free,” Modi said.

The prime minister said that the Digital India campaign has brought about a revolution in the country.

If the Congress was in power, your mobile bill could have been around Rs 4,000 to 5,000 per month, which is minimal now. “We made data affordable,” he said.

Speaking on the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), he said that in the past, specifications of houses built under government schemes were set by the people sitting in Gandhinagar or Delhi.

“But we changed the rules. How can a person sitting in Delhi know what is the requirement of a tribal person who is in poultry farming? We said that you should trust our people as nobody will build an inferior quality home for themselves,” the prime minister said.

Court orders registration of case against Karnataka health minister Dr K Sudhakar

November 28, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: A Special Court here has ordered for the registration of a criminal case against the Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar on finding prima facie evidence that he had defamed an activist

“This court is of the considered opinion that the complainant has made out sufficient grounds for proceeding against the accused for offences under Section 499 of IPC which is punishable under Section 500 of IPC and the offence under Section 501, R/w section 34 of IPC,” the XLII Additional Magistrate Court which is a Special Court of trial of cases against sitting and former legislators said in its order on November 15.

The private complaint was filed by R Anjaneya Reddy from Chikkaballapura taluk. It came up before Judge Preeth J. The complainant Reddy claimed to be a social worker who had fought for irrigation schemes.

When Sudhakar was appointed as the chairperson of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board on June 20, 2019, Reddy had challenged this in the High Court of Karnataka.

The allegation is that Sudhakar on June 27 at a public function in Maralukunte village uttered defamatory statements against Reddy. This was published in two prominent newspapers.

The complaint by Reddy said Sudhakar had ill-will against him and uttered defamatory statements against him in a public function.

He had issued legal notices to Sudhakar and the two newspapers but they have not tendered a public apology.

Ordering the registration of a criminal complaint, the court said that “on going through the complaint averments and the sworn statement of the complainant prima-facie, it goes to show that the complainant is defamed”.

Karnataka-Maharashtra border row: Ahead of SC hearing, Bommai to meet Advocate Rohatgi in Delhi

November 28, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai will be leaving for Delhi on Monday evening to meet and discuss the Karnataka- Maharashtra border issues with senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi.

Ahead of the case coming up in the Supreme Court on November 30, Bommai is expected to discuss the ongoing issue and the next steps to be taken by Karnataka.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Bommai said that he has taken an appointment with the senior advocate. He said he would also meet BJP National President JP Nadda during his visit to Delhi. “I have sought time with Nadda, hoping that he would give permission for a talk,” Bommai said.

Sources from BJP said he is likely to discuss the cabinet expansion issue with Nadda. CM said he is also meeting Union minister Piyush Goyal.

It can be noted C.M alleged incidents of the painting of Karnataka buses with pro-Maharashtra slogans. He had even appealed to the Eknath Shinde government to take immediate steps to put a stop to this. Bommai also said that such incidents will create a division among the states and hence Maharashtra should act swiftly.

Bommai has been under intense pressure for some time now, over the expansion and rejig of the Cabinet not taking place, to make way for the fresh faces, ahead of the Assembly elections next year.

There have been some reports of possible cabinet expansion by filling in six vacant posts or a kind of a rejig by dropping a few and inducting an equal number of new faces.

There were also talks in some quarters that a Gujarat-like complete top to bottom overhaul of the state ministry may take place.

However, many aspirants feel it is “too late now” with polls fast approaching.

Meanwhile, as the state is all set for a legal battle with neighbouring Maharashtra over the border dispute, the Chief Minister will be meeting senior advocate Rohatgi during the visit, to discuss it.

Bommai on Sunday had chaired a meeting with senior advocates and officials here in the wake of the case coming up before the Supreme Court for hearing on November 30.

Reacting to a question on Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah accusing the BJP of “distorting” the Constitution, Bommai said, “It is the Congress which did it, during the emergency by curtailing individual freedom and sending everyone to jail. We need not learn from them.”
