UP trader attempts suicide on Facebook live, blames PM Modi for his financial state; wife dies

February 10, 2022 by Nasheman

Baghpat {UP}: A local trader allegedly attempted suicide on Facebook Live, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his poor financial condition. His wife, who also consumed poison, died.

Superintendent of Police, Neeraj Kumar Jadaun, confirmed the incident on Wednesday and said the condition of Rajiv Tomar (40), who ran a shoe-shop, is serious.

The incident took place on Tuesday when Rajiv started a Facebook Live during which he consumed poison.

After failing to stop her husband, Tomar’s wife, Poonam, also consumed poison.

Both of them were rushed to a private hospital where Poonam died, while the trader’s condition was stated to be critical, police said.

In the purported video, Rajiv held PM Modi responsible for his financial condition.

“Modiji will be responsible for my death. If Modi ji has any shame, he will change things. I am not saying he is wrong on everything but he is not a well-wisher (‘hitaishi’) of small traders and farmers,” he said.

When Poonam tried to stop him, Tomar said, “Government to sunti nahi tum hi sun lo” (the government doesn’t hear us, at least you should hear).

Poonam tried to take out the poison from Tomar’s mouth but after failing to do so, she also consumed it, the purported video showed.

Rajiv was a resident of Subhash Nagar.

Rajiv ran a shoe shop and the lockdown in 2020 had ruined his business, his family members said.

A large number of shoes in his shop were damaged as the shop was closed for the long period, they said.

He also had taken loans which he could not pay off, they said, adding that Rajiv had two sons.

Condoling the death, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said on Twitter, “It’s saddening to know about the suicide attempt by a trader and his wife. While the wife has died, his condition is serious and I pray to God for Rajivji’s speedy recovery.”

At a press conference in Lucknow on Wednesday, Priyanka said, “The Baghpat incident is saddening. Demonetisation, GST and lockdown had affected small and medium businessmen. It’s unfortunate that the government has not come for their help.”

Congress releases manifesto for UP, promises to waive farm loans within 10 days of coming to power

February 10, 2022 by Nasheman

Lucknow: The Congress on Wednesday promised to waive farm loans within 10 days and provide 20 lakh jobs if the party forms the government in Uttar Pradesh.

The poll manifesto released by party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also vowed to provide Rs 3,000 as compensation to farmers for crop damage by stray cattle, a problem gripping cultivators in many parts of the state.

The manifesto — “Unnati Vidhan” — was termed by Priyanka as “Jan Ghoshna Patra’ (people’s manifesto).

The vision document was brought released a day before voting starts in 58 assembly seats in the state.

Two earlier manifestos — “Shakti Vidhan” for women and “Bharti Vidhan” for youth — have already been released by the party.

The BJP and the Samajwadi Party released their manifesto for the UP election on Tuesday.

Releasing the manifesto, Priyanka said, the Congress will waive loans of farmers within 10 days of government formation, and also purchase wheat and paddy at Rs 2,500 per quintal as well as sugarcane at the rate of Rs 400 per quintal, after coming to power.

She said in Chhattisgarh, her party’s government had written off farmers’ loans within three hours of being sworn-in.

The issues of unemployment and inflation have been taken care while formulating the manifesto of the state, she said.

“Our government will provide 20 lakh government jobs. While 12 lakh jobs will be given for filling vacant posts, 8 lakh new jobs will be created,” she said, adding 40 percent of these would be earmarked for women.

She said, “Rs 3,000 compensation will be given to farmers for crop damage by stray cattle. ‘Godhan Nyay Yojna’ will be started under which cow dung will be purchased at Rs 2 per kg,” she said.

Priyanka said the Congress wanted to end outsourcing in the government, and will regularise those, who are on contract or are being outsourced, in a phased manner.

The manifesto also promised to reduce electricity bills to half and provide Rs 25,000 as compensation to families who have lost earning members to Covid.

Priyanka said the budget provision on health services will be increased by 5 per cent and promised Rs 50 Lakh compensation to those who lost lives due to coronavirus.

To support small businesses, the party promised to develop traditional business hubs like brass in Moradabad and leather in Agra.

“Two lakh teachers will be recruited and Siksha Mitra will be made permanent on the basis of their experience and expertise. Vacant post of Sanskrit and Urdu teachers in the state will also be filled,” the Congress general secretary said.

The future roadmap also promised to increase emolument of sweepers, village heads and Rs 3,000 compensation to the specially-abled, the manifesto promised.

The Congress also promised a reserved seat in Legislative Council for ex-army men and withdraw false cases lodged against journalists in the state.

Priyanka said provision for home district transfer for women police personnel to be done, adding that SC/ST students will be given free education from KG to post-graduate level.

“Nishad (boatmen) community will be given right on river resources and Kol community will be included in the ST category,” the manifesto said.

Priyanka said while fee hike in schools will be controlled at the block level and public libraries with internet facilities will be opened.

The Congress general secretary said the “Unnati Vidhan” has promised land rights for urban development and the slum land will be in the name of the person concerned.

“Also the middle class will get land and economic incentives for affordable housing,” she said.

Asked about the old pension scheme, Priyanka said, “We have discussed the old pension scheme. We think a mid way can be found in this. The government should increase its share of the pension.”

Last year, Priyanka had launched ‘Shakti Vidhan’ manifesto for women promising that 40 percent of the 20 lakh new jobs her party aims to create in the state will be allotted to women.

Kejriwal has no right to ask for votes in Punjab: Sukhbir Badal lashes out at AAP chief

February 10, 2022 by Nasheman

SUJANPUR: SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday said AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal has no right to ask for votes in Punjab as he did not visit the state for a major period of the past five years.

Asserting that Kejriwal was trying to “deceive Punjabis yet again”, Badal said, “You have already suffered by trusting the false oaths taken by former chief minister Amarinder Singh. Now, a party of outsiders is trying to sway you by asking you to give it one chance.”

“I ask AAP why Punjabis should trust AAP. Its convener came to Punjab five years back and his party even won 20 seats to emerge as the principal opposition party in the state. However, instead of raising the voice of people, 11 of its 20 legislators joined the Congress,” he said.

Badal said Kejriwal “ditched” Punjabis like Amarinder Singh, according to a party statement.

“The AAP leader did not even come to Punjab more than once a year before the start of the election process. He did not care to send any medicines to Punjab as chief minister of Delhi. He did not even visit the state during the Covid pandemic. How can you trust him to stand by you in case you give him a chance and elect AAP to power,” Badal asked.

Urging Punjabis to reject outsiders, the SAD president said the SAD-BSP alliance alone represented the regional aspirations of people.

He said Punjabis across the country and even the world looked up to the SAD to resolve their grievances.

“We have successfully resolved problems being faced by Punjabis across the world,” he said.

Badal said erstwhile SAD-led governments had a time-tested track record.

“We made Punjab power surplus. We are also responsible for bringing in world-class road and air connectivity to Punjab. We introduced unique initiatives like free power to farmers which is not being offered to farmers anywhere else in the country,” he said.

“We also brought in social welfare schemes like old-age pension, ‘atta-daal’ and Shagun Schemes, which have helped weaker sections of society to stand up on their feet,” he said.

Tamil Nadu has no moral right to oppose Mekedatu: HD Deve Gowda

February 9, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Tamil Nadu which has implemented several irrigation projects in the guise of drinking water projects has no moral right to object to the Mekedatu balancing reservoir meant for drinking water project planned by Karnataka on its territory, asserted former prime minister HD Deve Gowda on Tuesday.

Raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha while talking over linking of rivers announced by the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman in her budget on February 1, Gowda stated, “After the Cauvery-Vaigai-Gundar link project and lifting water from Mettur to the benefit of Salem district in the guise of drinking water, they have no moral right to object the Mekedatu project.”

Taking note of the Padayatra taken out by the Congress in Karnataka demanding for the clearance by the Centre he observed that the Congress and the BJP have been fighting each other whereas the AIDMK and DMK have been united for the cause of their state. He alleged that Tamil Nadu has been diverting the river water to the new arid zones although it is meant for the delta area as it is against the 2007 Cauvery Water Tribunal verdict. “The verdict has no bearing on Karnataka constructing a reservoir for the drinking water purpose on its territory,” he pointed out.

“I am alone and has been battling over the issues of irrigation for over fifty years in the interest of Karnataka. When Karunanidhi was the Chief Minister the Centre had provided Rs 2,000 crore to construct a project at Hogenekal to serve the purpose of drinking water to six districts,” he claimed.

He also blasted the Centre as it has not declared the Upper Bhadra and third phase of Upper Krishna as national projects yet. He wanted the leader of the floor Piyush Goyal to take note of the issue and convey it to the Narendra Modi led BJP government at the Centre. The RS members from Karnataka Jairam Ramesh and Dr L Hanumanthaiah backed Gowda.

Bats for Bengaluru:
The Supreme Court had allocated 4.7 TMC consumptive drinking water to Bangalore city based on its population, as per the 2011 Census, which was 85 lakhs. But, the population of Bangalore alone is 130 lakhs.

“We have been utilising 50 TMC ft water out of 284 allocated for the irrigation purpose,” Gowda pointed out. Three of your (BJP) MPs have won from Bengaluru City, not just one but three seats. But they can’t do anything here,” he chided.

“Supreme Court had allocated 284 TMC ft to Karnataka and 400 TMC ft to Tamil Nadu. There is an acute problem with the availability of drinking water in Bangaluru. Since the city will not come under the purview of the catchment area, not taken into consideration to allocate drinking water for the one-third Bangaluru city,” he explained.

Backed Karunanidhi

“Late Karunanidhi was supporting the UF Government when I was the Prime Minister for eleven months. I discussed with him that the government itself was going to fund the construction of the project and whenever there would be any shortage to Tamil Nadu, we would not come in the way of the flow, we will allow the water; and, when Tamil Nadu would not require water, we would use the water for drinking purposes and some portion might be utilised for power generation,” he said.

Jaishankar to visit Philippines on February 13 after BrahMos missile deal worth USD 375 million

February 9, 2022 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will visit Philippines from February 13 to 15, to discuss regional and international issues of mutual interest, said the Ministry of External Affairs in its official statement on Wednesday.

The visit comes at a time when India signed a deal worth USD 375 million to supply 290 km strike range BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines.

Notably, this is Jaishankar’s first visit to the Philippines as External Affairs Minister wherein he will hold talks with Teodoro L. Locsin Jr., Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines to review developments in bilateral relations.

In November 2020, the Joint Commission meeting on Bilateral Cooperation was co-chaired in virtual format by both sides.

In addition to other meetings with the political leadership in the Philippines, EAM would interact with the Indian community in Manila during his visit.

The visit is expected to impart further momentum to bilateral relations with key partners in the Indo-Pacific, Australia, and the Philippines, which is also a leading member of ASEAN, said MEA.

Earlier, the CEO of the missile firm Atul D Rane said the deal with BrahMos was the first for India to supply a full major weapon system to a foreign country.

“This is the first export deal that India has signed for a full major weapon system and this paves the way for many more to come forward,” he said.

Maya’s charm wanes, Rift among BSP support base

February 9, 2022 by Nasheman

MEERUT/MUZAFFARNAGAR: It is no less than an irony that many people irrespective of their political leanings in western Uttar Pradesh recall the Mayawati government’s tenure as one of the best but a large chunk of her core supporters are looking to vote for other parties as they don’t see the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as a prime contender this time.

There is a sizeable Dalit population in 58 constituencies that will poll on February 10. There is a feeling that the Dalit vote — both among Jatavs and non-Jatavs — is expected to be split this time, though Jatavs in several villages are keeping their cards close to the chest. It could also provide some cushion to the BJP in the Jat-Muslim dominated areas where farmers are upset with the party.

“Whatever people may say, Mayawati was one of the best CMs. She did good work for every community to maintain law and order, curb crime and ensure that district authorities address our issues in time. This time, she is not in her true form and keeping low or if there is some back-channel deal (with BJP),” says Chaudhary Gyanendra Singh, a farmer, from Bhanu village in Shamli.

There is also a caste difference in mind among high caste voters when asked why they would not vote for Mayawati, who is also a Jatav, a community that dominates the Scheduled Caste in the state. “She is a Harijan, how can we vote for her,” says Vijender Baliyan, a Jat from Shahpur in Muzaffarnagar.

Others feel the party lost its steam as Mayawati “started selling tickets for crores” and that made her give tickets to rich, who otherwise were not worthy to win. “We are committed to her. However, if there is another candidate from our community, who is likely to win, then people may vote for him out of compulsion,” says Sunil Jatav, a carpenter in Siwal Khas constituency of Meerut.

Mayawati ruled UP four times but her party is on a downward trajectory since 2012. The BSP with 206 seats formed a majority government in 2007 but came down to 80 in 2012 and 19 in 2017. Her vote share, however, remained intact as her core Jatav votes remained with her.

Hijab row turns violent, colleges shut for 3 days

February 9, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU : As the hijab row turned violent on Tuesday, the State Government declared a three-day holiday for high schools and colleges. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai appealed to students to maintain peace as the situation threatened to go out of control.

A video grab of students hoisting the
saffron flag in front of the Government
First Grade College in
Shivamogga on Tuesday

The violence hit the education system even as it was returning to normal and offline classes had started just a few days ago. The students have taken to the streets at a time when they should be preparing for exams, which are two months away.

In Mandya, students wearing saffron shawls gathered outside colleges in the district raising ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ slogans. A hijab-wearing student at PES College in Mandya was heckled by boys, and the college staff had to rush to her rescue. Several girls wearing hijab returned to hostels in fear as students protested outside colleges at Mandya and Pandavapura in the district.

At the Government Degree College at Bapuji Nagar in Shivamogga, miscreants threw stones at students, injuring two of them. A saffron flag was hoisted in the college by students, while the police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. Later, prohibitory orders were imposed in the town. In Harihar, police lobbed teargas shells and lathi-charged protesting students, who were indulging in stone-throwing.

The hijab row that started at a college in Udupi district has quickly spread to most parts of the state, including Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Hubballi, Hassan, Kolar, Kodagu and Kalaburgi. Students wearing hijabs and saffron shawls and groups supporting them resorted to protests. As the situation was getting out of control, many colleges declared holidays even before the government made the announcement.

Wearing hijab comes under privacy rights, argues counsel

Devadatt Kamat argued that wearing the hijab is essential religious practice as prescribed by the Quran and wearing it comes under privacy rights. As hijab is part of attire, the Government Order mandating uniform partakes the character of right to expression guaranteed under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution.

Prescription of uniform is against the protection of religious practice under Article 25. The three judgments of Bombay, Kerala and Madras HCs are not relevant to this case and hence, this cannot be a foundation for the state’s uniform policy. He also said they are not trying to incite any trouble and are quietly practising their faith.

Issue raised in Parliament
Congress MP from Karnataka L Hanumanthaiah raised the hijab row issue in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Speaking during zero hour, he said that Karnataka is facing intense student protests as girls wearing hijab were not allowed to attend classes. Another MP Naseer Hussain supported him. They alleged that the state government failed to control the situation, which was opposed by BJP members.
